Melnyk, Iurii. "The worldview of the Ukrainian state in the Yevhen Onatsky’s opinion journalism (based on the Ukrainian small encyclopedia)." Proceedings of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv, no. 11(27) (2019): 127–41. http://dx.doi.org/10.37222/2524-0315-2019-11(27)-7.

Full text
Abstract:
Taking into consideration the Ukrainian Small Encyclopedia, the article recreates the worldview for the Ukrainian state in the interpretation of the encyclopedia’s author Yevhen Onatsky. The USE is a large-scale encyclopedic text by Yevhen Onatsky, which has no analogues. In this text the author concentrated his scientific and journalistic achievements over his life. A comparison of the USE with other encyclopedias gives the right to say that subjectivity in judgments is characteristic not of Onatsky’s work only, but of many other encyclopedias, in particular of the «Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts» by Diderot and d’Alembert, of Wikipedia and in general of any encyclopedia that claims to explain processes and phenomena. Owing to its subjective component, the USE is valuable not only as an encyclopedic work, but also as a journalistic one. From this point of view, the most noteworthy are encyclopedic articles of a worldview nature that are of immediate practical importance both in times of statelessness and at the stage of the Ukrainian state-building. In his encyclopedia, Onatsky sharply condemns Marxism as an ideology, the USSR as an attempt to imitate its implementation in practice, Moscow imperialism as the essence of the Bolshevik state. The other author’s warnings, although less accentuated, are evoked by the vices of the free world: soulless egocentrism, hedonism, consumerism, as well as parliamentarism, capitalism and colonialism, if they are built on fraud and exploitation of man by man. Onatsky contrasts the named social phenomena with an ethos of struggle, supported by an unshakable hope of ultimate success; spiritual nationalism, the meaning of which is solidarity between members of society and service to higher ideals; thinking in the interests of the community (nation), and not in the interests of individuals, political parties or classes. Keywords: Ukrainian small encyclopedia, Yevhen Onatsky, journalism, worldview, Ukrainian state.

Nikulin, A. M. "Encyclopedias as tools of modernization: Stalinist versions of agrarian knowledge." RUDN Journal of Sociology 21, no. 1 (December 15, 2021): 154–68. http://dx.doi.org/10.22363/2313-2272-2021-21-1-154-168.

Full text
Abstract:
The article considers directions of the agrarian modernization as presented in the four editions of the Soviet agricultural encyclopedia from the mid-1920s to the mid-1950s. On the basis of some historical examples and theoretical concepts, the author explains the scientific, ideological and political significance of encyclopedias in the formation of social knowledge and ideology; shows how during the Stalinist period, the Soviet agricultural encyclopedias passed through several successive great leaps in the representation of agrarian knowledge under the accelerated Soviet modernization; stresses the manipulative way of managing agrarian knowledge and human capital in agriculture - on behalf of the leader and ruling party. The article describes the transition from the first Soviet encyclopedia of the 1920s, which focused on the modernization of peasant Russia, to the encyclopedia of the early 1930s, which denied the importance of the peasantry and praised the projects of large-scale industrial-agricultural production; many authors of the first peasant encyclopedia were repressed. The encyclopedia of the late 1930s reflects the fight against the authors of the previous encyclopedia of the great leap and the purges in the name of the ideology of the planning-management approach in the further modernization of Soviet agriculture. The encyclopedia of the late 1940s - early 1950s reflects the victory of the technocratic-bureaucratic worldview and personnel approach to the agrarian sphere, which prevailed in the agriculture of the USSR until the very end of the Soviet era. The author focuses on the influence of the subjective factor (political leaders, editors-in-chief and anonymous authors) on the ideology, topics and style of encyclopedic articles. In conclusion, the author notes that the strong ideological control and volatile political situation distorted knowledge in the Soviet agrarian encyclopedias, which negatively affected the quality of rural human capital and largely predetermined the stagnation of rural development in the late USSR.

Abstract:
During the 1930s the émigré philosophers of the Vienna Circle launched an ambitious program to create a more scientific culture, but they proved to be largely blind to indigenous American efforts along similar lines. Those scholars who study the Vienna Circle have too often ignored the intellectual power and broad appeal of these American efforts as led by John Dewey, Thorstein Veblen, Morris Cohen, and Sinclair Lewis. The émigrés developed as their chief enterprise The International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, which was dwarfed in size, appeal, and longterm historical significance by The International Encyclopedia of Unified Science brought out at the same historical moment by followers of Dewey. Both encyclopedias and the circles of intellectuals who sustained them illustrate the special appeal of scientific culture for The Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences intellectuals of Jewish origin throughout the North Atlantic West between the two World Wars.

Abstract:
ArgumentThe interwar period in France is characterized by intense activity to disseminate science in society through various media: magazines, conferences, book series, encyclopedias, radio, exhibitions, and museums. In this context, the scientific community developed significant attempts to disseminate science in close alliance with the State. This paper presents three ambitious projects conducted in the 1930s which targeted different audiences and engaged the social sciences along with the natural sciences. The first project was a multimedia enterprise aimed at bridging what would later be named “the two cultures” – natural sciences and humanities – rather than at popularizing scientific results in the society at large. The second project, an encyclopedia namedEncyclopédie françaiseedited by the French historian Lucien Febvre, was meant to shape a cultural view of science for the general public. The third project and the most successful enterprise was thePalais de la découvertedesigned by the physicist Jean Perrin and explicitly aimed at attracting the young public. This paper explores the paradoxes that resulted from these large enterprises. Despite their social ideals, the scientists-popularizers favored an elitist concept of popular science essentially aimed at integrating science into high culture. While they strove to overcome the increased specialization of sciences, their efforts nevertheless accelerated the professionalization of scientific research and the isolation of science in an ivory tower. In their attempts to get closer to the public, they eventually contributed to spreading the cliché of the increasing gap between the scientists and the public.

Abstract:
Current sociology doesn’t have a settled view on what to do with a phenomenon that in the literature has been titled as “artificial intelligence” (AI). Sociological textbooks, handbooks, encyclopedias, and sociology classes’ syllabi typically either don’t have entries about AI at all or talk about it haphazardly with a stress on AI’s social effects and without discerning the underlying logic that moves the prodigy on. This paper is an invitation to a professional conversation about what and how social sciences can/should study “artificial intelligence”. It is based on a discussion of the preliminary results of an on-going three-year research project that has been launched at the ISA Congress in Toronto. The paper examines AI in relation with ‘artificial sociality’. It argues that research on AI-based technologies is flourishing mainly outside established disciplinary boundaries. Thus, social sciences have to look for new theoretical and methodological frameworks to approach AI and ‘artificial sociality’.

Abstract:
The Russian Oriental studies are rich and diverse in their disciplines. The focus of research activities conducted mainly at the university centres of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, and during Soviet times in the capitals of some republics (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, etc.), was largely determined by the domestic political and geopolitical interests of the Russian Empire. Thus, a philosophical aspect in oriental studies, as well as university philosophical education practical^ did not exist. The changes brought by the revolution of 1917 have greatly affected all fields of social life, including the academic milieu. The article examines a complex and contradictory path of development of the national philosophy, on the example of the Institute founded in 1921 by Gustav Gustavovich Speth (1879-1937), nowadays the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The latter has become the main focal point of the philosophical research activities in the former Soviet Union. Particular attention is paid to the liberation from the Eurocentrism inherited from imperial times concerning the spiritual heritage of the peoples of the East as a whole, and in philosophy in particular. The pivotal points of its activity became “History of Philosophy” in 3 Volumes (19411943) and “History of Philosophy” in 6 Volumes (1957-1966). The real breakthrough was the encyclopedias, such as: “The New Philosophical Encyclopedia” in 4 volumes (2001); “Indian philosophy. Encyclopedia” (2009); “The Philosophy of Buddhism: Encyclopedia” (2011). The Orientalist aspect in higher philosophical education nowadays becomes more visible. The recent international recognition of the achievements of the Russian Orientalist philosophical studies regardless of a relatively small number of specialists is largely due to their collective efforts and close cooperation.

In this paper, we release data about demographic information and outliers of communities of interest. Identified from Wiki-based sources, mainly Wikidata, the data covers 7.5k communities, e.g., members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and 345k subjects, e.g., Deborah Birx. We describe the statistical inference methodology adopted to mine such data. We release subject-centric and group-centric datasets in JSON format, as well as a browsing interface. Finally, we forsee three areas where this dataset can be useful: in social sciences research, it provides a resource for demographic analyses; in web-scale collaborative encyclopedias, it serves as an edit recommender to fill knowledge gaps; and in web search, it offers lists of salient statements about queried subjects for higher user engagement. Abstract:
The article highlights the prehistory and history of the Institute of Man of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which was founded thirty years ago. The creation of the Institute of Man was the result of a powerful scientific and social movement, united by the interest in the problem of man. The scientific program of the Institute of Man was based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to human research, developed by academician I.T. Frolov. The result of the deployment of complex human studies was the creation of scientific institutions, training courses, departments and faculties, almanacs and journals, dictionaries, anthologies and encyclopedias, the allocation of an official specialty in philosophical anthropology. The main milestones on the path of the formation of philosophical and anthropological research in the 1980s–1990s are traced. Much attention is paid to the interaction of philosophers with outstanding representatives of special sciences in the complex study of man. It is told about the state general academic program of humanitarian research, within the framework of which the creation of research structures for the comprehensive study of man was financed. The main scientific results of the Institute of Man of the Russian Academy of Sciences are summarized and the difficulties that the Institute faced during its existence are highlighted.

This work is part of Greenwood’s Daily Life Encyclopedias series which addresses the branch of historical scholarship that emphasizes the roles and experiences of ordinary people rather than focusing exclusively on political/military leaders and similar prominent historical figures. Its 230-plus entries are divided into ten categories: “Arts”; “Clothing, Fashion, and Appearance”; “Economy and Work”; “Family Life and Gender Roles”; “Food and Drink”; “Housing and Community”; “Politics and Warfare”; “Recreation and Social Customs”; “Religion and Belief”; and “Science and Technology.” Copies of fifteen primary documents follow the main section. Each section begins with a brief introduction that sets the context, followed by alphabetical entries for each sub-topic. Entries average 2–3 pages. Black and white illustrations are interspersed throughout the text. A table of contents conveniently lists all entries alphabetically under each broad category. Other features include a chronology, “see also” references to related articles, further reading lists for each entry, a selected bibliography, and detailed subject index.

Abstract:
Abstract Archaeology and anthropology treat the presence of animals in mythology and folklore as axiomatically about a culture’s ideas of nature. Sociology often assumes modernity no longer has such myths, but animal imagery abounds. In this article, the authors argue that our relationships with animals and nature are not primarily rational or scientific but formed through these images and the mythologies that come with them. The authors call these images “modern bestiaries” in reference to the medieval proto-encyclopedias that cataloged animals for moral instruction. Modern bestiaries (including alphabet books, sports teams, and car names, among others) generate a holistic worldview that marries a deep love of animals and “nature” to a fundamentally anti-ecological cosmology. The authors examine a particular modern bestiary—the menagerie of gummi animals in the candy aisle. Eating a gummi bear is never merely gastronomic but also an act of mimesis, sympathetic magic, and storytelling in which cultural relationships to animals are formed.

Abstract:
The article examines the 100-year history of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IF) as a state organization and a special social institution. It traces the history of systematization of philosophical knowledge in an encyclopedic form: the initial plan (early 1920s) of G.G. Shpet to focus efforts on the question “What is philosophy?”; the project of the historical study of philosophy in the light of materialistic dialectics as its pinnacle (1928–1930); a partly realized plan (late 1930 – early 1940) of writing a 7-volume world history of philosophy; “Philosophical Encyclopedia” in 5 volumes (1960–1970); “New Philosophical Encyclopedia” (2000–2001) in 4 volumes. The article shows the contradictory interaction of the tasks of the study of philosophy and its development. In the history of IF, the following stages are highlighted: the dogmatism of 1930–1940, the humanistic turn of the mid-1950s, rejection of the monopoly of Marxist philosophy, pluralism of post-Soviet philosophy. The contemporary situation has put into question the traditional beliefs what a human being is. The challenges from the brain and cognitive sciences highlight a new understanding of consciousness and reason, which creates a common field of research for the IF and exciting creative perspectives for its staff

Abstract:
Nikolai Vasilievich Kyuner (1877-1955) was a Russian Orientalist. Having graduated with merit from the St. Petersburg State University, he was sent to the Far East and spent there two years. Having returned, he was appointed head of the department of historical and geographical sciences at the Eastern Institute (Vladivostok) in 1904. Kyuner was one of the first Orientalists to teach courses in history, geography, and ethnography. His works number over 400. The article studies a typescript of his unpublished study ‘Korea in the second half of the 18th century’ now stored in the Archive of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg). Little known to Russian Koreanists, it nevertheless retains its scientific significance as one of the earliest attempts to study the history of the ‘golden age’ of Korea. The date of the typescript is not known, though analysis of the citations places its completion between 1931 and 1940. The article is to introduce the typescript into scientific use and to verify some facts and terms. N. V. Kuyner’s typescript consists of 8 sections: (1) ‘Introduction. Sources review’; (2) ‘General characteristics of the social development stage of Korea in the second half of the 18th century’; (3) ‘Great impoverishment of the country’; (4) ‘Peasantry’; (5) ‘Cities’; (6) ‘Popular revolts’; (7) ‘Military bureaucratic regime’; (8) ‘The Great Collection of Laws’ (a legal code). There are excerpts from foreign and national publications of the 19th - early 20th century, and there’s also some valuable information on Korean legal codes and encyclopedias of the 18th century, which have not yet been translated into any European languages. The typescript addresses socio-economic situation in Korea in the 18th century; struggles of the court cliques of the 16th-18th centuries and their role in inner and foreign policies of the country; social structure of the society and problems of the peasantry; role of trade in the development of the Middle Korean society; legal proceedings and legislation, etc. One of the first among Russian Koreanistics, N. V. Kyuner examined causes of sasaek (Korean ‘parties’) formation and the following events, linking together unstable situation in the country, national isolation, and execution of Crown Prince Sado (1735-1762).

Abstract:
This study discusses the practice of implementing changes in the age limit of marriage that occur in Mattiro Sompe District. This type of research is descriptive qualitative field research. This study uses primary data sources, namely interviews with child marriage actors, the Head of the Office of Religious Affairs, and people who were considered related to the discussed topic. Meanwhile, the secondary data is from various relevant books and literature, such as RI Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning Marriage and Child Protection Law Number 35 of 2014. The result of this research / scientific papers, articles, and other documents relevant to the research's substance. For tertiary data from legal dictionaries, Encyclopedias of Islam, magazines, and newspapers. The data collection methods used are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data processing and analysis techniques are carried out through three stages: data reduction, data presentation (data display), and conclusion drawing /verification. The results of this study show that the ratification of Law number 16 of 2019 is a legal product that binds every Indonesian citizen without exception, including the people of Mattiro Sompe District, as a basis or reference for those who will carry out marriages must be as regulated in Law number 16 of 2019 concerning the age limit of marriage. The social impact of the marriage age limit is based on Law number 16 of 2019, which has been implemented in the Mattiro Sompe District. The social conditions of the people of Mattiro Sompe District, which is the majority of farmers, affect responding to changes in this age limit so that they feel objections and difficulties when implementing it. Meanwhile, those with a higher education level feel the positive impact of this change in the marriage age limit. Meanwhile, the Head of KUA Subdistrict, Mattiro Sompe, in terms of psychology, puts pressure when an application is submitted from a close family or has a kinship relationship. The application of changes in the marriage age limit does not reduce the number of cases of child marriage in Mattiro Sompe District. Still, from 3 years, the application of the marriage age limit shows an increase every year and is dominated by women.

Abstract:
Although calling itself a geographic encyclopedia, the scope of this two-volume set is broader than such a designation suggests. Hund has attempted to encompass a large range of information about a vast area, perhaps a bit much for a modest two-volume set. Attempting to address in a meaningful way topics in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and applied sciences for both poles in approximately 350 entries and fewer than 800 pages is ambitious. His stated "central feature . . . the original inhabitants of the Arctic region" (xi) would, alone, merit a work of this size. John Stewart's larger, two-volume Antarctica: An Encyclopedia, 2nd ed. (McFarland, 2011) is more limited in both geographical and topical scope.

Psychology and Sociology both deal with a huge range of concepts and methodologies. Information from other disciplines is integrated into Psychology and Sociology, and vice versa. This reciprocal intellectual relationship must be enhanced so that the social and behavioral sciences can assist in solving the many present and future local and international problems. Such a highly demanding integration among disciplines can be systemised using an invaluable research tool - the Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential.

The library is a facility that functions as an information center, a source of various knowledge, research, recreation and cultural preservation. The Medan City Regional Library is a library organized by the regional government using general funds which aims to serve the public in obtaining comprehensive information without distinguishing gender, religion, race, age, occupation and position. In 2021 the Medan city regional library has 28 thousands of titles books in several categories. Of the many books contained in the library, a system must be needed where the system is useful for both the library and the reader in maximizing grouping of books and searching books easily by the reader, therefore the K-Means Clustering method is used, where the method This is a method in data mining that processes clustering data that is grouped into one or more clusters. In this study, 100 samples of book category data were used in the Medan City library. This study groups the data categories into 3 clusters, namely the most desirable, desirable and least desirable. The results of this method process will find out the most popular book category data so that in the future it will be a consideration for the librarian to increase the collection of books at the Medan City regional library. The process of calculating the K-Means method in grouping books is only carried out until the 2nd iteration because iteration -3 gets the same value. Abstract:
Comprehensive studies of educational systems in an economic and social sciences context are relatively recent. The 1966 Equality of Educational Opportunity report (also known as the Coleman Report) addressed the availability of equal educational opportunities to children of different races, religions, and national origins in response to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was an early example of social science research being used to influence national policy. Since then, educational finance research has blossomed into an area of study that influences decision makers at the national, state and local levels in resource allocation, assessment, and school organizational and restructuring policies.

Abstract:
The review of the encyclopedic dictionary M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin and his contemporaries focuses on the relevance, the essential uniqueness and practical applicability of the publication. The dictionary, dedicated to the contemporaries of Saltykov-Shchedrin, is a philological event of great consequence. Any research of the writer’s oeuvre in the social, historical, political, and, by all means, literary contexts makes it possible to consider the author’s biography, his creative intentions and the particulars of their actualization in a consistent manner. This is particularly relevant for Saltykov, whose life and works are permeated with the pathos of acute actuality. Each encyclopedia entry in the dictionary serves both as a piece of information about a new character and the integration of the biographical and literary particulars shedding light on various stages of Saltykov’s creative work, on the ways and means facilitating the formation of his political stance, his literary views and his creative mind in general. Historical, literary, cultural, social, political contexts of Saltykov-Shchedrin’s biography and oeuvre are expanded by means of the names, one way of another mentioned in the satirical confessions of the writer or in his epistolary legacy. The projection on the writer-satirist helps to shape a new image of those who seemed to be just the backdrop, against which significant events took place. It is emphasized that the book is addressed to both a professional literary scientist, and to an average reader. The authors of the articles introduce new information concerning Saltykov’s biography, his literary ties, his view of the public life, culture and art of Russia and foreign countries into scientific circulation. A number of articles start featuring historic, literary and textual elaborations. Dictionary entries are based on under-published and archived materials. For the first time the corpus The chronicles of the life and oeuvre of M. E. Saltykov is given. A significant part of the dictionary work has been done by the scientists of Saratov National Research State University I. V. Kabanova and I. A. Knigin.

Encyclopedia of Intercultural Competence draws together multiple concepts and theories related to interaction between groups of people with different cultural identities. As such, a wide range of disciplines and perspectives are represented in the entries, spanning education, healthcare, and the social sciences. What distinguishes these volumes from similar works, such as Jane Jackson’s Handbook of Language and Intercultural Communication (Routledge 2012) is the broadening of scope beyond verbal communication to include values, ethics, customs, and culture.

Abstract:
The article considers the strengthening of the Turkic factor in Egypt after the Mamluk Emirs, natives from the Khwarezm, Turkmen and Kipchak tribes, who came to power in the second half of the XIII century. The influence of the Turkic factor affected all aspects of life in Egypt. Under the leadership of the Turkic Emirs, the Egyptians defeated the crusaders who invaded Egypt in 1248. This defeat of the 7th crusade marked the beginning of the General collapse of the Crusades. Another crushing defeat of the Mamluks led by Sultan Kutuz caused the Mongols, stopping their victorious March through the Arab world. As a result of these brilliant victories, Egypt under the first Mamluk Sultans turned into a fairly strong state, which developed agriculture, irrigation, and foreign trade. The article also examines the factors contributing to the transformation of Egypt in the 13-14th centuries in the center of Muslim culture after the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate. Scientists from all over the Muslim world came to Egypt, educational institutions-madrassas were intensively built, and Muslim encyclopedias were created that absorbed the knowledge gained in various Sciences (geography, history, philology, astronomy, mathematics, etc.). Scholars from Khwarezm, the Golden Horde, Azerbaijan, and other Turkic-speaking regions along with Arab scholars taught hadith, logic, oratory, fiqh, and other Muslim Sciences in the famous madrassas of Egypt. In Mamluk Egypt, there was a great interest in the Turkic languages, especially the Oguz-Kipchak dialect. Arabic and Turkic philologists write special works on the vocabulary and grammar of the Turkic languages, and compile Arabic-Turkic dictionaries. In Egypt, a whole layer of artistic Turkic-language literature was created that has survived to the present day. The famous poet Saif Sarayi, who came from the lower reaches of the Syr Darya river in Mawaraunnahr was considered to be its founder. He wrote in Chigatai (old Uzbek) language and is recognized a poet who stands at the origins of Uzbek literature. In addition to his known the names of eight Turkish-speaking poets, most of whom have nisba “al-Khwarizmi”. Notable changes occurred in Arabic literature itself, especially after the decline of Palace Abbasid poetry. There is a convergence of literature with folk art, under the influence of which the poetic genres, such as “zazhal”, “mavval”, “muvashshah”, etc. emerge in the Egyptian poetry. In Mamluk Egypt, the genre of “adaba” is rapidly developing, aimed at bringing up and enlightening the good-natured Muslim in a popular scientific form. The works of “adaba” contained a large amount of poetic and folklore material from rivayats and hikayats, which makes it possible to have a more complete understanding of medieval Arabic literature in general. Unfortunately, the culture, including the fiction of the Mamluk period of Egypt, has been little studied, as well as the influence of the Turkic factor on the cultural and social life of the Egyptians. The Turkic influence is felt in the military and household vocabulary, the introduction of new rituals, court etiquette, changing the criteria for evaluating beauty, in food, clothing, etc. Natives of the Turkic regions, former slaves, historical figures such as the Sultan Shajarat ad-Durr, Mamluk sultans as Kutuz and Beybars became national heroes of the Egyptian people. Folk novels-Sirs were written about their deeds. And in modern times, their names are not forgotten. Prominent Egyptian writers have dedicated their historical novels to them, streets have been named after them, monuments have been erected to them, and series and TV shows dedicated to them are still shown on national television. This article for the first time examines some aspects of the influence of the Turkic factor on the cultural life of Mamluk Egypt and highlights some unknown pages of cultural relations between Egypt and Mawaraunnahr.

Abstract:
The work is an attempt to generalize the scientific interpretation of fundamental concepts in the framework of a qualitative paradigm, such as interaction, interview and interpretation. These terms are usually used in a broader sociological theoretical and methodological literature, and have their own history within the social sciences. Though, in modern science, these categories are already embedded in the terminology and semantics of the interpretive paradigm, and they have acquired additional meanings and context of use in the thesaurus of the qualitative sociologist. Therefore, the goal is to describe them in more details, in the genre of dictionary entries, as terms embedded and interpreted in the field of qualitative sociology; as concepts used during the construction of the methodological design of qualitative research, and in the practice of fieldwork or analysis of primary data. Moreover, these three terms define the general concept and configuration of our journal “Interaction. Interview. Interpretation”.
