Nor does he dispute that ‘explanations in both natural and social science need laws in other ways, even when not as part of the explanation itself (p. 97 above). The distance between his view and the covering law theory, he points out, ‘is not as great as it may first appear to be’ (p. 97 above).

Abstract:
The first professional societies in the United States, from the 1880s to the 1910s, understood history to be closely associated with the other social sciences. Even in the mid-twentieth century, history was still grouped with the other social sciences, along with economics, sociology, political science, and anthropology. But in the past few decades, history and anthropology in the United States (though not necessarily in other countries) have moved away from the social sciences to ally themselves with the humanities—paradoxically, just when the other social sciences are becoming more committed to historical research.

Abstract:
In Uruguay, the development and institutionalization of the social sciences have been relatively delayed compared to other countries of the region. This fact contrasts with the socio-economic and sociopolitical development of the country, as well as with that of the professional branches of university education. The so-called formal foundational process of the social sciences effectively began in the 1970s, especially in history, economics and sociology. Political science and anthropology began to take shape only after the return to democracy in 1985. The military coup (1973-85) caused an interruption in the institutional status of the social sciences but did not entirely dismantle them. These sciences continued to develop in independent research centers, often receiving external funds. The exchange with foreign academic centers, especially the CLACSO and FLACSO nets, was germane to the process. With the return of democracy, the institutionalization process of the social sciences resumed and the link between the pre-dictatorship and post-dictatorship generations in these fields became more apparent. Simultaneously, the labor market for social scientists broadened and diversified.

Abstract:
In order to reveal impacts of natural and social sciences on each other, the authors examined connections between fields of medical and social sciences using a search for references and citations of scientific publication. 1. The largest affinity between the medical and social sciences was found between neurosciences and psychology, but there was a significant affinity between clinical sciences and general social sciences, as well. 2. The example of General & Internal Medicine papers in the topics of “diabetes” suggests that in the period 2001–2010 the share of references to social sciences was significantly increased. In the meantime, social science papers in the same topics contained references to Clinical Medicine papers in a constantly high percentage. 3. In the sample under study, the age distribution of social science papers in the references did not differ significantly from that of the other sources. 4. Share of references to social science papers was found to be extremely high among Hungarian General & Internal Medicine papers in the topics of “diabetes”. This finding still requires clarification, nevertheless, since e.g. it was not supported by an institutional comparison including the largest Hungarian medical research university. 5. The intensity of the reference/citation mediated information flows between the Hungarian Medical Journal, Orvosi Hetilap and social sciences appears to be in accordance with the current international trends. Abstract:
AbstractThe social sciences are undergoing a dramatic transformation from studying problems to solving them; from making do with a small number of sparse data sets to analyzing increasing quantities of diverse, highly informative data; from isolated scholars toiling away on their own to larger scale, collaborative, interdisciplinary, lab-style research teams; and from a purely academic pursuit focused inward to having a major impact on public policy, commerce and industry, other academic fields, and some of the major problems that affect individuals and societies. In the midst of all this productive chaos, we have been building the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard, a new type of center intended to help foster and respond to these broader developments. We offer here some suggestions from our experiences for the increasing number of other universities that have begun to build similar institutions and for how we might work together to advance social science more generally.

The second decade of the association's existence culminated in a veryencouraging conference in Dearborn, Michigan this year. The conference highlights included a keynote address by Ali Mazrui,Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities, State University of New Yorkat Binghamton, and addresses by 'AbdulHamid AbuSulayman, past presidentof AMSS and current rector of the Islamic University of Malaysia, and MunirAhmad Khan, director of the Pakstan Atomic Energy Commission. Mazrui, who focused on the Gulf crisis, spoke about the double standards practicedby the West in dealing with the Muslim ummah. AbuSulayman stressed theneed for reform of character at the individual level for achieving lasting socialchange. The Isma'il and Lamya' al Faruqi Memorial Lecture was delivered byJohn Esposito, director of the Center for International Studies, Holy CrossCollege, Worcester, Massachusetts and past president of the Middle EastStudies Association (MESA). He reminded the Muslim social scientists ofIsma'il al Faruqfs tradition, urging them to become activists and scholarsof Islam at the same time. The conference proceedings were spread over nineteen panels whichoffered a variety of papers on Islam and Muslim life by scholars from NorthAmerica and overseas. The tradition that had been revived three years ago was maintained, andthus the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers (AMSE) also heldtheir annual conference concurrently with this year's AMSS conference. Theother tradition that continued was the trialogue between representatives ofthe three Abrahamic faiths.Another feature of the program was the incorporation of the AMSSBusiness Administration seminar. This program featured two panels. In thefirst panel, Ahmed M. Abo-Hebeish of Northrop Corporation discussed theframework of debtor-creditor relations as the foundation of financial accountingin Islam, and Mohamed A. Abstract:
In this issue of Social Science History we begin a special series of articles surveying the impact and use of historical research and reasoning in the other social sciences—anthropology, economics, geography, political science, and sociology. The authors of the essays have been asked to analyze their disciplines so that readers will get a sense both of major issues and research directions and of influences. In addition, they have been asked to include in their references older important works as well as more recent ones, so that those in other disciplines may use the essays as bibliographic sources. After the series is completed, we expect to publish an expanded version of it as a separate book.

Abstract:
From the perspective of economic science social capital opened space for the analysis of social structure, social norms and institutions i.e. for the analysis of the long neglected influence of socio-cultural factors on economic changes and processes. Trying to explain how social structures emerge on the basis of individual optimization, i.e. to explain them by the logic of rational choice, economic science widened its analytical domain. The explanatory scope of the basic neoclassical principles has been considerably widened to incorporate what has previously been considered to be the analytical terrain of other social sciences. This process has been labeled in scientific circles as 'colonisation' of social sciences, or economics 'imperialism'. The goal of this paper is to determine the implications of these changes for the relation between economic science and other social sciences.

The results show the significances of sports as an engagement tool, of the need to develop the relationship between the sponsor market and CSR, the importance of involving the collaborator in the process and, lastly, the results confirm that it is essential to respect the characteristics of each sponsor in order to obtain positive results. This research seeks to enrich the studies as much in the field of sports management, as in that of corporate social responsibility, making it apparent the need of sponsorship in this relationship with the addition of the social component.

Abstract:
The Brazilian Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations (BDTD) provides essential data to support many social sciences investigations. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of computation tools tailored for helping extract and analyze the necessary information from the BDTD library. In this paper, we discuss the development of computational solutions to answer questions from a particular social sciences research using metadata from BDTD. The solutions involve the integration of data processing and presentation techniques, such as string-processing algorithms, knowledge graphs and information visualizations. All programming codes implemented at the scope of the project are available for helping other researchers. The paper also highlights the importance of having researchers from Social Science and Computer Science working together, what motivates future collaborations in these areas.

Abstract:
There has been a great deal of concern in recent times about the capacity of social science students at all levels to cope with the demands of quantitative methods in the curriculum. The Nuffield Foundation funded a project Reasoning from Evidence to produce some data visualisations and associated curriculum materials to support the teaching of social science at Advanced-level (ages 16– 19 in the UK), using data sets relevant to the Sociology curriculum but which have usefulness across other subject areas also. Social sciences deal routinely with contexts in which the population under consideration is not homogenous. The data used is often presented in aggregated form which disguises the characteristics of the subgroups – whether these are by ethnicity, age, socio-economic status, region or some other categorisation. This paper reports on the development of materials using data on health and on the UK public disorder of August 2011. We report on further development of data visualisations using the 2011 UK Census data.

Abstract:
This paper by Marcel LaFlamme explores new forms of connection and community for early-career researchers in less formal structures, often facilitated by social media and other communication technologies. By learning from these loosely institutionalized spaces, LaFlamme contends, scholarly societies as well as research libraries and their parent institutions can adapt to a changing environment and take steps to make scholarship more open and accessible.

Abstract:
Horizontality is a salient social phenomenon of the last decade. It asserts itself against hierarchies in social movements and countless other collective practices around the world. It constitutes a characteristic of an emergent sociality that demands the attention of the social sciences. The 2010s are a moment as important as “the Sixties”, a time when Ivan Illich called for the development of tools of conviviality, and horizontality may be categorized as one of them. Today’s horizontality may be related to that of populations that have been the focus of anthropologists interested in their longstanding propensity to work against the affirmation of the authority of commanding. Public squares, roundabouts, and the courtyards of apartment buildings welcome the early symptoms of democratic experimentation that circulates also among groups, collectivities, and associations with varied purposes. In all these places, equality asserts itself and cuts across differences. The Yellow Vests and an educational cooperative in São Paulo are the empirical foundation of this study.

Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America, Maria Sibylla Merian Centre. Conviviality in Unequal Societies: Perspectives from Latin America Thematic Scope and Preliminary Research Programme. Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.46877/mecila.2017.01.

Full text
Abstract:
The Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila) will study past and present forms of social, political, religious and cultural conviviality, above all in Latin America and the Caribbean while also considering comparisons and interdependencies between this region and other parts of the world. Conviviality, for the purpose of Mecila, is an analytical concept to circumscribe ways of living together in concrete contexts. Therefore, conviviality admits gradations – from more horizontal forms to highly asymmetrical convivial models. By linking studies about interclass, interethnic, intercultural, interreligious and gender relations in Latin America and the Caribbean with international studies about conviviality, Mecila strives to establish an innovative exchange with benefits for both European and Latin American research. The focus on convivial contexts in Latin America and the Caribbean broadens the horizon of conviviality research, which is often limited to the contemporary European context. By establishing a link to research on conviviality, studies related to Latin America gain visibility, influence and impact given the political and analytical urgency that accompanies discussions about coexistence with differences in European and North American societies, which are currently confronted with increasing socioeconomic and power inequalities and intercultural and interreligious conflicts.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper reviews emerging evidence of the impact of COVID-19 on governance and conflict, using a “governance and conflict first” approach in contrast to other research and synthesis on COVID-19 in the social sciences that tends to be structured through a public health lens. It largely focuses on evidence on low- and middle-income countries but also includes a number of examples from high-income countries, reflecting the global nature of the crisis. It is organised around four cross-cutting themes that have enabled the identification of emerging bodies of evidence and/or analysis: Power and legitimacy; Effectiveness, capacity, and corruption; Violence, unrest, and conflict; and Resilience, vulnerability, and risk. The paper concludes with three over-arching insights that have emerged from the research: (1) the importance of leadership; (2) resilience and what “fixing the cracks” really means; and (3) why better ways are needed to add up all the “noise” when it comes to COVID-19 and evidence.
