Negative trends in the social sphere and the social problems that exist because of this lead to a sharpening of state national security issues. At the same time, domestic and foreign scholars do not pay sufficient attention to the psychological component of social security, which characterizes the subjective assessment of the state of the social sphere development by the population. This very aspect of social security has become a basis for the formulation of the research goal as an analysis of the state of social security of Ukraine in a regional context in accordance with the system of indicators taking into account the psychological component. The main methods of the investigation are analysis, synthesis, comparative analysis, cluster analysis method. The practical result is the definition of the main components of national security, special attention is paid to the analysis of the interpretation of the definition of “social security” by domestic scientists. The expediency of allocating the psychological component of social security has been substantiated. The list of social security indicators has defined in accordance with the methodological recommendations for calculating the level of economic security of Ukraine, namely: the ratio of nominal wages to the subsistence minimum per working age person; the ratio of the size of the labor pension to the subsistence minimum of the disabled persons; the number of HIV-infected persons with the first diagnosis, persons per 100 thousand people); the number of patients with active tuberculosis with the first diagnosis, persons per 100 thousand people; level of crime. The so-called indexes of social tension have been added to this list, which take into account the psychological aspect of the population of the state, namely: arrears of wages; the level of payment by the population of housing and communal services; the level of registered unemployment; the number of employees who were in forced full-time employment. A cluster analysis of the regions of Ukraine has carried out on the basis of the listed social security indicators, which resulted in the definition of regions with high indicators of social security, namely: Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Luhansk, Odesa and Kharkiv regions.

Introduction. Increase in the community understand the need for full and timely calculation and payment of taxes and duties and conscious understanding of their importance for the viability of the state, providing qualified and effective consultative assistance to taxpayers acting priority at the state tax consulting and corporate levels. An important role in this context is played by psychological traits taxpayers that understand key aspects of tax consulting. It increases the level of tax literacy and tax culture in society, strengthens economic competitiveness and creates a series of macroeconomic effects. The purpose of the article is the study of social and psychological aspects of functioning and improving tax consulting services in Ukraine. Results. The theoretical aspects of the tax consulting are investigated. The basic indicators of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine in the field of consulting are analyzed. The psychological traits of the conduct of fiscal and tax advisors are systematized. Deals with the social component of the tax behavior of taxpayers and outlines the reasons prompting them to deviation. Showed the role and place of business taxation in the formation of tax culture. Proved, that the active outreach by SFS of Ukraine will increase the level of tax awareness and create a tax culture in society. Formation and development of the effective market of tax consulting in Ukraine will increase the level of service taxpayers at the corporate level will lead to optimization of fiscal policy and strengthen its social role. Conclusion. The ability to use the tax employees in the work of social and psychological technologies can increase the efficiency of their operations and create the basis for improving the confidence of taxpayers to the tax system in general, increase of tax culture in society, and to create a basis for the functioning of the corporate tax consultancy in Ukraine

Актуальность темы определяется возросшим количеством безработных в современном обществе в связи с экономическим и эпидемиологическим кризисом, наличием противоречий между высокой потребностью безработных граждан в социально-психологической поддержке и отсутствием теоретической и практической разработки данного вопроса, а также преимущественно информирующим характером деятельности специалистов, работающих с этой категорией населения. В статье представлены результаты теоретического анализа психологических особенностей безработных граждан, осуществленного с целью определения направлений социально-психологической работы с ними, которая может обеспечить успешность адаптации этих людей к изменяющимся условиям жизни, связанным с потерей и поиском работы. Отмечены такие изменения в личности людей, потерявших работу, как страх, беспокойство, депрессия, невысокий уровень принятия себя и других, эмоционального комфорта и интернальности. К факторам, снижающим успешность адаптации безработных людей к новым условиям, отнесены повышенная тревожность, низкий уровень стрессоустойчивости, тревожный, неустойчивый, гипертимный типы акцентуаций личности, а повышающим ее — стрессоустойчивость, оптимизм, активность, коммуникабельность, интернальный локус контроля, эмоциональная лабильность, позитивное отношение к себе, своей жизни, позитивный атрибутивный стиль и др. Выделены невротизированный и конструктивный варианты поведения личности в ситуации потери работы; успешный и неуспешный, оптимистично и пессимистично настроенные типы безработных. С учетом всего вышесказанного определены основные направления социально-психологической поддержки безработных, коррекции их психологического состояния и помощи в трудоустройстве, среди которых выделены определение факторов, затрудняющих выход из кризиса после потери работы и выработка оптимальных способов быстрой и успешной адаптации к новым условиям. Указано на то, что расширение знаний о психологических особенностях личности безработных необходимо для их адресной социально-психологической поддержки и совершенствования работы специалистов по социально-психологическому сопровождению безработных граждан. The relevance of the issue is accounted for by the growing number of the unemployed in modern society, which is triggered off by the economic and epidemiological crisis, the discrepancy between unemployed citizens’ want of social and psychological support and the fact that the theoretical and applied aspects of the issue are underdeveloped and specialists who are expected to provide support provide information services instead. The article presents the results of a theoretical analysis of unemployed citizens’ psychological characteristics. The analysis is conducted to estimate social and psychological support required to help unemployed people to successfully adapt to the changing conditions of life associated with employment loss and job search. The article shows that people who have lost employment are subject to dismay, anxiety, depression, low level of self-acceptance and acceptance of others, emotional discomfort, and internality. There are some factors that hinder unemployed people’s adaptation to the new conditions of life. These factors are extreme anxiety and low stress resilience, psycasthenic, unstable, and hyperthymic forms of accentuation. The factors that can improve one’s adaptability are stress resilience, optimism, active life style, communicability, internal locus of control, emotional liability, positive perception of self, positive attributional style, etc. The article discusses neurotic and constructive behavioral patterns in situations of job loss. It also deals with successful and unsuccessful, optimistic and pessimistic types of unemployed people. The analysis of the abovementioned factors enables the authors of the article to identify the major aspects of social and psychological support unemployed people need. It also enables the authors to elaborate strategies of psychological correction and employment assistance, such as the identification of factors that hinder one’s adaptation to the new conditions of life and the elaboration of strategies that will improve people’s adaptability skills. The article maintains that in order to improve the quality of social and psychological services rendered by specialists working with the unemployed and to ensure that all unemployed citizens get the required social and psychological support, it is essential to examine unemployed people’s psychological characteristics.

SummaryDiabetes is an increasingly common health problem, especially in the West, where there is an emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes, closely related to the epidemic of obesity. Many people with diabetes struggle to optimise their diabetes control, often because they also have mental illnesses or psychological and social problems. Poor diabetes control has significant consequences for the individual, and if not addressed will result in complications that include blindness, kidney failure and even amputations. There are also consequences for health services resulting from increased admissions and emergency department presentations with diabetes-related difficulties. In the long-term, the costs associated with complications such as renal failure and amputation are high. Addressing the psychiatric and psychological barriers to good glucose control can help reduce the burden of diabetes and its complications on both the individual and the health service.

This article is devoted to the study of the socio-psychological aspects of the socialization of children with speech disorders. Speech defects in children are considered as a social problem that hinders their social development, complicating adaptation in society. This phenomenon is due to the fact that a violation in the speech sphere contributes to the emergence of other abnormalities, such as motor, emotional-volitional, personal, disorders in the cognitive and motivational spheres, underdevelopment of the formation of differentiation of processes, as well as limitations of verbal-logical thinking. It is shown that the insufficient number of social service institutions for the adaptation of children with speech disorders in the system of social work is a negative institutional factor.

All this forms a powerful social demand for the development of the psychological service of education. The new socio-cultural situation of development of the young generation poses a new problems of psychological support of the educational system, which are reflected in the deliberations and discussions held in the framework of all-Russian scientific-practical conference with international participation «Actual problems of psychological service of the University in the new reality», which took place on 25–26 September 2020 in an online format. During the conference, the following issues were discussed: socio-psychological aspects of modern education, health protection of students, the specifics of the work of psychological services of universities and psychosocial aspects of distance learning at a university in a pandemic. As a result of the conference, it was proposed: to disseminate and implement the positive results of the activities of psychological services in the field of mental health protection among domestic universities; promote the creation of a common Internet space for the exchange of experience between psychological services of educational organizations; to develop a number of methodological recommendations on the specifics of teaching in conditions of distance learning for the teaching staff.

The ratification of the Lanzarote Convention by Russia in 2013 entails several issues that cannot be resolved without the help of social-humanitarian sciences. Information from sociology, psychology, and jurisprudence has been used to create a concept for the empirical study of the domestic violence against children - to improve the implementation of the Convention in Russia. The concept considers two aspects of the problem - social and social-cultural. The article presents the Russian experience of how the provisions of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse are implemented. The authors analyze statistical data on the number of families in which a sexually abused child is brought up; the number of abortions and childbirths by minors; the number of minors in educational colonies; the work of the childrens helpline; the number of mediation services; the number of social service organizations for families and children; the number of professionals working with children in programs aimed at preventing and protecting children from sexual exploitation and abuse; the number of organizations providing psychological-pedagogical and medical-social assistance; the number of specialized multifunctional centers providing assistance to families and child victims of sexual abuse; the number of specialized green rooms for investigating crimes related to minors; the number of specialists accompanying minors who have come into conflict with the law at all stages of the investigation and court proceedings; the number of professionals trained under the Child Sexual Violence Protection Program and now assisting families and child victims of violence. The article will be useful for readers who study the implementation of the Lanzarote Convention and the issues of child sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Purpose – In their seminal book, The Experience Economy, Pine and Gilmore point out that customers buy experiences and are willing to pay a steep premium for them and hence service organizations should try to make them more fun. The purpose of this paper (and the premise of the recent book) is that services can be redesigned using psychological principles to deliver positive experiences for any kind of service, not just those that lend themselves to fun; by definition, satisfaction with a subconscious aspect of a service cannot be explained by the customer; and the psychological aspects of service interactions have to be approached with the same level of rigor as that are used to design processes that deliver the technical features of the service. Design/methodology/approach – A point of view on the gap and opportunities in the field. Findings – The authors show that there is an opportunity to extend the service operations field. Practical implications – Enables managers and researchers to think about new approaches for designing experiences. Social implications – Valuable in a number of areas including healthcare. Originality/value – Presents a new point of view.

Besides, in cross-border regions there are challenging accessibility of psychological and social support, well undeveloped accessibility and support content in social services for vulnerable people. Suggested project activities are focused on the creation and efficiency of social services for socially excluded adolescent, youth.The innovations, that the Project suggest is new to all Baltic countries and suggests, that these methods of social inclusion, positive stress coping to use in social services are effective and qualitative comparing to economical investments in application in practice. Project main objective is to develop social psychological support service system with the purpose to enhance social integration of youth at social risk while implementing effective method of developing positive coping with stress strategies. The main objective is related with the Programme objective in two aspects: - the first one calls for the improvement of efficiency of social service. - The other one related with the higher social inclusion of the youth at social risk due to accessible empowering support and enhanced support services.

A key aim of homelessness services is not only to ensure that homeless people attain a secure home, but that this is a pathway to wider social inclusion. However, relatively little is known about the psychological elements that are essential for homeless people to engage with these pathways, nor whether these elements combine in ways that are predictable from previous research. In the present work, we examined both demographic and behavioural precursors, and contemporaneous psychological predictors, of a set of 49 homeless men’s intentions to engage with a programme to move them toward long-term housing and social inclusion. Contrary to predictions based on subjective utility and rational choice theories, we found that normative pressure and did not directly predict the men’s intentions. Instead, we found that intentions were predicted by their attitudes towards the services, and their specific beliefs about the benefits of particular courses of action (efficacy beliefs), and to a more restricted extent their experience (sociodemographics); and in those with high prior service use histories, only participatory beliefs guided future service use intentions. These findings suggest that it is important to focus on intentions as a highly relevant outcome of interventions, because beliefs about interventions can break the link between past behaviour or habitual service use and future service use. Such interventions may be particularly effective if they focus on the evaluative and efficacy-related aspects of behaviour over time and better understand the benefits the men evaluated the services as offering them.

Because of the high Incidence, and the possible resulting vocational disability it is very likely that rehabilitation counselors, particularly those employed in medical settings and the state, federal system, will work with women who have breast cancer and are eligible for services. Cancer of the breast may have significant impact on the emotional and psychological constructs of the individual, as it affects not only the patient, but her family as well and may interfere with, and disrupt the organization of the family, social, financial, education, vocational goals, and indeed the very definition of the family unit. Suggestions are made for some counseling techniques which may be used in dealing with these problems.

Emotions signal flaws in the person’s anticipation systems, or in other words, in aspects of models of how the world works. As these models are essentially shared in society, emotional challenges experienced by any individual are of relevance to the community of others. Emotions emerge at the heart of the individual experience, the only place where collective knowledge can be tested against the world. Once felt, emotions generate a cascade of psychological facts: compelling concern, cognitive work, social sharing, and propagation of the social sharing. The larger the fault detected, the more intense the emotion, the more intensive the cognitive work it generates, and the broader the social sharing of the episodic information. Through the social sharing of emotions, common knowledge is updated and enriched.

The article examines the origins of the creation of the probation service in Kazakhstan, its introduction into the sphere of criminal executive law, goals and objectives. The measures for the implementation of probation control, its role in the provision of qualified psychological assistance to juvenile offenders are considered. The ways of implementing probation control at the present stage are also indicated, the main tasks of the state are presented, program documents aimed at further development and improvement of the probation service are studied. Studied and presented statistical data on the dynamics of juvenile delinquency in the republic. The psychological characteristics of minors are analyzed, in respect of whom it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive and regular analysis of their specific needs. The creation of a specialized staff of trained employees to provide social and legal assistance to minors is emphasized and argued. This paper also raises the question of the need to introduce specialization of the penitentiary psychologist in the universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to achieve high results in the prevention of juvenile delinquency. To comply with international standards in the field of protecting the rights and freedoms of minors, crime prevention, attention is focused on complementing national legislation with the norms of UN international documents.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the psychological mechanisms underlying hospitality employees’ social exchange relationships at work by applying the social aspects of work and the social exchange theory. Design/methodology/approach MTurk was used for conducting a cross-sectional questionnaire survey, targeting frontline employees who were working in full-service restaurants. Descriptive statistic, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were performed. Findings Customer-employee exchange had a positive relationship with gratitude. Moreover, gratitude was positively associated with both role-prescribed customer service and extra-role customer service. Leader-member exchange and coworker exchange were positively related to obligation. Obligation had positive association with both role-prescribed customer service and extra-role customer service. The mediating effects of gratitude and obligation were statistically significant. Research limitations/implications Employees’ social exchange relationship with customers promotes prosocial behaviors by arousing gratitude in them. Moreover, their social exchange relationships with supervisors and coworkers lead to prosocial behaviors by provoking obligation from them. Originality/value This research shows the importance of the social aspects of work to contribute to employees’ prosocial behavior in the hospitality industry. Moreover, it proves the critical roles of emotions to guide employees’ decisions about social exchange.

Background Data breaches in health care are on the rise, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to mitigation efforts. Objective The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive framework for modeling and analyzing health care professionals’ information security practices related to their individual characteristics, such as their psychological, social, and cultural traits. Methods The study area was a hospital setting under an ongoing project called the Healthcare Security Practice Analysis, Modeling, and Incentivization (HSPAMI) project. A literature review was conducted for relevant theories and information security practices. The theories and security practices were used to develop an ontology and a comprehensive framework consisting of psychological, social, cultural, and demographic variables. Results In the review, a number of psychological, social, and cultural theories were identified, including the health belief model, protection motivation theory, theory of planned behavior, and social control theory, in addition to some social demographic variables, to form a comprehensive set of health care professionals’ characteristics. Furthermore, an ontology was developed from these theories to systematically organize the concepts. The framework, called the psychosociocultural (PSC) framework, was then developed from the various combined psychological and sociocultural attributes of the ontology. The Human Aspect of Information Security Questionnaire was adopted as a comprehensive tool for gathering staff security practices as mediating variables in the framework. Conclusions Data breaches occur often in health care today. This frequency has been attributed to the lack of experience of health care professionals in information security, the lack of development of conscious care security practices, and the lack of motivation to incentivize health care professionals. The frequent data breaches in health care threaten the mutual trust between health care professionals and patients, which implicitly impacts the quality of the health care service. The modeling and analysis of health care professionals’ security practices can be conducted with the PSC framework by combining methods of statistical survey, observations, and interviews in relation to PSC variables, such as perceptions (perceived benefits, perceived threats, and perceived barriers) or psychological traits, social factors, cultural factors, and social demographics.

Provides a philosophical analysis of the social constructionist substantiation of inclusion and social model of disability. The article also considers the notion of psychological service for inclusive education participants using Herman P. Meininger’s concept of normative anthropology that provides for structuring perspectives of delivering support to people with disabilities as the analytical tool. The author approves Meyninger`s conclusions about the inadequacy of normative anthropology of inclusion based on the ideal of autonomous personality. This ideal accepted by the normative anthropology preserves the noninclusive character regardless of what inclusion model is accepted for people with disabilities - social (inclusion) or individual (integration). The structuring perspective for providing care (as the normative anthropology) that draw on the ideal of authenticity is supported. The author emphasizes importance of considering both cultural and embodied aspects of human existence while constructing the normative anthropology of inclusion and related psychological services for its participants.

Abstract According to a 2018 AARP study, 42% of unpaid caregivers experience loneliness. While findings across multiple studies suggest that caregivers experience loneliness either because they lack intimacy in close relationships (i.e., emotional loneliness) or they feel disconnected from their social network (i.e., social loneliness), little is known about how aspects of dementia caregiving influence loneliness, particularly among rural caregivers. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between in-home service use and caregivers experience with both types of loneliness. Eighty-eight co-residing dementia caregivers in rural Appalachia (Mean Age = 68 years; 91% White; 58% Spouses) completed telephone interviews that included questions about their use of formal services and perceptions of emotional and social loneliness. More than half (58%) of the caregivers accessed 1 to 4 formal services. Regression models revealed that caregivers who experienced greater social loneliness were more likely to access personal care services (p=0.013) and respite services (p=0.004) compared to caregivers who experienced less social loneliness. Further, caregivers who experienced greater emotional loneliness were also more likely to access personal care (p=0.028) and respite (p=0.039) services compared to caregivers who experienced lower emotional loneliness. These associations remained robust even after controlling for relationship to the PwD (spouse vs. non-spouse). Findings suggest that beyond assisting with the care of the PwD, the use of formal services may help family caregivers manage loneliness and relieve social isolation. Discussion will focus on the importance of service accessibility and use for the health and psychological well-being of rural family caregivers.

The knowledge of important biopsychosocial factors linking women’s reproductive health and mental health is increasing. This review focuses on psychological aspects of contraception, unintended pregnancy, and abortion because these are common reproductive health experiences in U.S. women’s lives. This review addresses the mental-health antecedents and consequences of these experiences, mostly focusing on depression and depressive symptoms before and after unintended pregnancy and contraception. As mental-health antecedents, depressive symptoms predict contraceptive behaviors that lead to unintended pregnancy, and mental-health disorders have been associated with having subsequent abortions. In examining the mental-health consequences, most sound research does not find abortion or contraceptive use to cause mental-health problems. Consequently, evidence does not support policies based on the notion that abortion harms women’s mental health. Nevertheless, the abortion-care setting may be a place to integrate mental-health services. In contrast, women who have births resulting from unintended pregnancies may be at higher risk of postpartum depression. Social policies (e.g., paid maternity leave, subsidized child care) may protect women from mental-health problems and stress of unplanned children interrupting employment, education, and pre-existing family care responsibilities.

Childhood disability often imposes a social and emotional burden for children and their families.ObjectiveWith this study we evaluated several parents’ psychological aspects and the emotional behavioral functioning of their children with disability.AimTo investigate the possible correlation between parenting stress, level of depression in parents and behavior problems in their children, taking in to account the differences between mothers and fathers.Methodstandardized forms (CBCL, PSI, BDI) were completed from 57 (28 mothers) parents of children aged from 6 to18 years, focusing on psychological well-being includes depression, parenting stress, family resilience and family adjustment.ResultsThe mean age of our sample was 41.55 ± 5.4. The level of depression and stress index were higher in mothers than in fathers. Parenting stress was significantly associated with children internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in children.ConclusionThe results of this investigation indicate the importance of examining relations between parenting stress and behavior problems in children with disabilities. Objective of ensuring the rehabilitation process aimed at the welfare of the family. Introduction: Measures to prevent dental diseases are included in the list of medical care provided by dentists. Modern socio-economic transformations, including in health care, have contributed to the gradual evolution of the patient from the recipient of medical care to the consumer of services. The aim: To study the position of patients regarding the need and effectiveness of preventive dental care. Materials and methods: Study was conducted among 310 patients who were admitted in various municipal and state medical institutions, dental clinics and private dental offices in Uzhhorod. The average age of respondents is 26 years. The survey was conducted using questionnaires. Results: 90% of respondents are willing to pay for dental treatment based on the use of innovative technologies; 64% of people refer to paid services aesthetic therapeutic treatment; 87% of patients agree to pay for orthopedic treatment and 48% - for surgical intervention. Only 16% of respondents consider additional professional hygiene services and ready to pay for it themselves. Survey data show that 43.2% of patients give a doctor the main role in the treatment process. 42.8% of respondents need medical help in the form of advice or counseling for a decision on treatment. 14% of patients prefer to choose their own medical care and control the treatment. Conclusions: Dental prophylactic measures that are implemented in the practice of regulating social and labor relations, the presence of relationships between the physician and the patient develop by socio-psychological laws.

The purpose of the article is to identify psychological aspects of preventing corruption in the professional activities of public servants by analyzing the main motives of systemic corruption behavior and socio-cultural aspects of their formation. It is revealed that research on the motives of corruption behavior is associated with several important factors: 1) the stereotypes of understanding of the corruption existing in the Ukrainian society; 2) social factors of corruption behavior - historical, economic, political, cultural, collective-psychological and individual psychological; 3) socio-cultural aspects of the formation of anticorruption consciousness.There are several motives of corruption behavior: game, social, monetary etc. This is due to the existence of the most common frames of mass consciousness, which are recorded in the Ukrainian society regarding the perception of corruption. The determining factors of the occurrence of corruption behavior in the professional activities of public servants are the psychological dependencies of the person, which leads to the use of the concept of psychological research.Corruptive behavior is defined as deviant one and causes the perception of the responsibilities of the public service as an opportunity to obtain satisfaction from the prospect of receiving unlawful benefits and privileges for violating official moral and ethical requirements (the formation of dependence). The types of psychological dependencies of public servants (on power, money, etc.) are distinguished. It is shown that a painful manifestation of such a person’s psychological dependency is kleptomania. In order to prevent corruption in the professional activities of public servants, it is proposed to apply scientifically substantiated psychological and diagnostic support, in particular special methods for determining the propensity for kleptomania and corruption behavior.

Introduction. The article presents the results of the investigation of the impact of new information and communication technologies, namely Internet technologies of the social web, on the linguistic consciousness in the learning environment. The term covers a certain concept of the Global Web development, when the main functional task of a web service is aimed at maintaining interaction between network users.
The method of a free and directional associative experiment was chosen as main research technique. It allows most accurately identifying the meaning of the word, seeing what is behind this word in the linguistic consciousness of a person. Associative series were identified for a number of concepts – the most popular social web services and Internet technologies (Internet, Instagram, social media, communication, Twitter, Telegram, WhatsApp, Youtube, Pinterest, Google, selfie).
Results. The associative experiment showed that information, communicative and functional components of the Global net are actualized in the linguistic consciousness of the participants of the educational process most of all. Almost all social media services have both positive and negative connotations. The educational component of social media has been marked little, if at all, in the linguistic consciousness of the recipients which indirectly indicates that their use in the educational process has not become an institutional practice yet.
Conclusions. The results of the research will contribute to the development of a new direction in modern linguistics – psycholinguistics 2.0 which studies psychological and linguistic aspects of human speech in social media, social and psychological aspects of using language in speech communication using web 2.0 platforms and services, and in individual verbal and thinking activity. The study is characterized by an interdisciplinary nature, being at the interface of psycholinguistics 2.0 and education 2.0, which contributes to a better understanding of the polyparadigmatic way of the development of humanitarian knowledge under the influence of technologies in general.

Purpose – The field of service research has devoted considerable attention to the customer’s role as value creator, but there is a lack of research on understanding customers’ psychological processes in value creation. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of psychological distance in value-creation processes. Psychological distance is the customer’s perceived distance from service interactions in terms of spatial distance, temporal distance, social distance and hypothetical distance. Critically, psychological distance influences cognitive processes and can influence how customers think and feel about the service interaction. An appreciation of psychological distance within service contexts can help managers to tailor the interaction in order to facilitate value creation. Design/methodology/approach – In this conceptual paper, the authors build on psychology research and service research to develop seven propositions that explore how psychological distance can operate within service interactions and how this might influence value creation. Findings – The authors divide the propositions into three sections. The first concerns how perceived psychological distance from the service interaction can act as a barrier to entering a service interaction. In particular, the authors consider the influence of social distance and spatial distance within the context of service interactions. The second section examines how psychological distance to the expected point of service use can influence how customers construe the service and the value creation. The third aspect addresses customer-specific characteristics that can impact on value creation by influencing perceived psychological distance toward the service. Research limitations/implications – Existing research suggests that customers ultimately decide if value is created in the interaction. This paper proposes that perceived psychological distance influences customers’ value creation by examining the service interaction from the customer perspective. The authors suggest that complex context-specific features of the service interaction can be understood by considering psychological distance from the service interaction and from the service itself and evaluating how this impacts on value-creation processes. Practical implications – From a practical point of view, the paper helps managers to better understand how to manage the service interaction with customers by identifying psychological antecedents of customer value creation. Originality/value – The paper introduces the notion of psychological distance into service research about value, proposing that the customer’s role in creating value in interactions with the service provider is influenced by the psychological distance to the interaction and to the service offered in this interaction.

Purpose – Working across languages is playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of mental health services, notably through psychotherapy and psychological therapies. Growing awareness of the complex processes that ensue in working across languages, including the presence and role of an interpreter, is generating new conceptualisations of practice, but there is a need now to evidence how these impact on service users. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper discusses the model for working with interpretation developed by Mothertongue multi-ethnic counselling service, which conceptualises the therapeutic process as working within triangular relationships consisting of service user, therapist and interpreter. Second, the paper discusses the qualitative, practice-near methods applied in, and findings from a pilot study to evaluate the interpreter's role. Findings – Three patterns of response to interpreters were identified: negative impacts on the therapy, the interpreter as conduit for therapy and the therapist and interpreter jointly demonstrating a shared enterprise. It is concluded that the method and findings of the pilot justify a larger study that will further evaluate the experiences of service users and continue to develop and test conceptualisations for best practice. Originality/value – Working across languages is now recognised as an increasingly important aspect of therapy in contexts where migration has created new demographics. This paper contributes to the discussion of working therapeutically with people with mental health difficulties across languages. Its originality lies, first, in the discussion of a new clinical approach to working with interpreters, and second in the methods used to access the views of service users about their experiences of interpreters.

An increased number of cosmetic institutes and cosmetologists as well as a wide range of service in this field is explained by natural physiological processes in our body, whichsteadily lead to decline of its functions, i.e. aging. Fashion for bright, young and successful look makes a great contribution to psychological behavior of a modern woman making her conform to social trends. The presence of various skin diseasesresulting from pathological aspects, disruption of hormonal status, bad ecology, and stress entails early appearance of aesthetic drawbacks that makes a person call upon specialists of aesthetic and cosmetology fields, or even dermatologists, in some severe cases.
We were interested people of what age and with what problems address cosmetologists. The object of our research was men and women older than 18, dissatisfied with their appearance or having some skin problems. We did not take into account people who visit cosmetologists on instructions of their parents (average age of such patients is 12±1,8 years old). Anonymous questionnaire was held among 163 people, among whom there were 37 men (average age is 28±1,9 years old) and 125 women (average age is 33±1,7 years old). All the respondents were asked to answer the questions of a prepared questionnaire (pic.1; pic.2): about multiplicity of visits to a cosmetologist, about the reasons of visiting a cosmetologist, types of cosmetology service, and to evaluate (subjectively) the efficiency of mass-market cosmetics and professional cosmetics, and to point out the qualities that a cosmetologist should possess.
By analyzing the obtained data we learnt that men (75,3%) almost do not visit a cosmetologist, but women vice versa visit a cosmetologists on a regular basis (70,9%). However, 22,1% of women carry out procedures more often than 1-2 times a month, and the others (6,6%) – 1-2 times a week. It happened that the most popular procedure is depilation (34,4%). A facial (21,6%) and massage (21,6%) are less in demand.It was revealed that women almost equally use mass-market cosmetics and professional cosmetics while men (85%) do not differentiate between these them and do not use any of them. According to a subjective evaluation, in 46,4% of the cases the use of professional cosmetics was more popular than cosmetics made of simple home ingredients that was bought in ordinary shops.
93,1% of respondents pointed out that the most important quality of a cosmetologist is medical education.
Despite high motivation of women to visit a cosmetologist, according to the questionnaire, high prices of procedures limits the quantity of visits, 34,2% of respondents told this.

The article is devoted to the problem of psychological support of military personnel of special units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which is relevant in the context of the new Regulation on the Psychological Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2021. The content of the main tasks and functions of the psychological service of the Armed Forces is presented. Special attention is paid to the description of psychological support and the specifics of its implementation in the system of personnel work and combat service in the Armed Forces. On the example of psychological support of military personnel of special units, the activities that are aimed at social and psychological adaptation of military personnel; didactic adaptation of military personnel; the possibility of professional self-determination; the opportunity to develop professional skills; correction and improvement of the work of the command staff are identified. The conditions for the implementation of psychological support for military personnel of special units are described.
As a result of the study, it is established that during the last decade, the problem of theoretical and methodological justification of psychological support continues to be relevant. At the present stage, "psychological support" is considered as a multi-faceted phenomenon, widely used in various aspects of life. The formation of the conceptual and categorical apparatus is also aimed at improving the legal culture while improving the regulatory legal framework for the departmental psychological practice of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

AbstractThis study is aimed at the importance of social care in rehabilitation. A brief overview of the social care theme is used as the methodology. There is a tension in mental health care between biological and psychological treatments that focus on deficits at the individual level (symptoms, disabilities) and social interventions that try to address local inequalities and barriers in order to improve access for service users to ordinary housing, employment and leisure opportunities. The history of mental health care tells us that social care is often underfunded and too easily dismissed as not the business of health care. But too much emphasis on a health model of individual deficits is a slippery slope to institutionalisation by way of therapeutic nihilism. Rehabilitation services follow the biopsychosocial model but with a shift in emphasis, recognising the vital role played by social interventions in improving the functional outcomes that matter to service users including access to housing, occupation, leisure facilities and the support of family and friends. In conclusion, rehabilitation is framed within a model of personal recovery in which the target of intervention is to boost hope and help the individual find a meaning to life, living well regardless of enduring symptoms.

In this research, for the first time in Ukraine, a large volume of foreign scientific sources on public service advertising (PSA) was analyzed that allowed to make an assessment of the differences in theoretical approaches to the determination of the PSA and of the main research vectors of exploring this social and communication phenomenon; an attempt to expand its theoretical and methodological fundamentals was taken. The study is based on qualitative analysis of 122 scientific sources. The data was systematized and generalized. Descriptive, comparative and empirical-analytical methods were used to make an objective assessment of the subject. System method was applied to link each item to its role and place in the system. It is shown in the research that scientific approaches to the concept of PSA are ambiguous; they vary depending on historical, cultural, political and other factors. More than half a century American as well as European scientists have been attempting to explore the PSA as a separate subject; currently, the most actual trends in public service advertising development relate to its applicable aspects, its social communication techniques and efficiency. Constantly expanding geography of the research contemplates a tendency towards deeper understanding of the subject, thanks to the outcomes of implemented information campaigns. Special attention in the PSA research is dedicated to the psychological factors of influencing audience, the latest communication channels, and specifics of the content. Considering the international experience and historical factors, the conceptual apparatus of public service advertising was specified in this research, and the ways for improving further scientific studies of the PSA in Ukraine are proposed.

In particular, the psycho-social aspects of career counselling are studied against the background of education for democracy in a changing South African society. A major argument advanced in that the training programmes of school career counsellors should be made more relevant to the specific social and educational needs of disadvantaged pupils. This would mean effecting changes in some prevailing practices, and adopting different paradigmatic perspectives when viewing career counselling for a new South African society. In the movement away from rigid social control, mechanistic and behaviouristic tendencies towards emancipatory practices, both psychological as well as sociological perspectives will have to be taken into account. This will enable youngsters to discover their strengths and weaknesses and to be able to respond creatively to the prevailing socio-economic constraints which influence job choices.

Background:Research on teachers' representations of children's learning is currently ongoing. Social representations are common-sense theories built and shared in everyday interactions. Their analysis can detect the possible differences between teachers’ naïve beliefs and scientific learning theories. Objective: The objective of this pilot study is to analyse the beliefs about children’s learning of a group of teachers. The beliefs will be related to the most acknowledged learning theories. Methods: A mixed methods research was employed to analyse 100 pre-service teachers’ representations of the origins of learning and the psychological processes involved. Results: It emerged from the results that the teachers interviewed consider children’s learning mainly as culturally acquired, which reveals the prevailing constructivist conception of learning. Many pre-service primary school teachers, however, tend to see learning as mere ‘transfer of information’; many pre-service kindergarten teachers perceive learning as ‘behaviour modification’. The most considered psychological aspects are ‘knowledge’ and ‘acquisition’, while emotions are barely considered. Conclusion: Linking implicit theories and disciplinary theories could support pre-service teachers in integrating the theory and the practice of learning so as to understand the way their models influence their educational choices.

In this paper, the author explores the relevance of indigenous training from a cross-cultural perspective. We start by examining the broader context of traditional Western psychology and its relevance in a multicultural society. A brief description of the indigenous paradigm is followed by a discussion of differences between Western and indigenous psychology, and a proposal of cultural eclecticism as a potential frame for their integration. Next, we discuss the South African context in relation to comparative-cultural aspects of medical and psychological services. The author’s clinical experience informs her increased awareness of culturally inadequate service at the state hospital, developing curiosity about African indigenous healing, and subsequent encounters and collaboration with African traditional healers. Ultimately, the author develops culturally sensitive training that explores cultural biases and generates cross-cultural knowledge and competence. In conclusion, the author advocates that in the area of globalisation and multicultural societies, psychological training and clinical practice, should include dialogue and facilitate collaboration between Western and indigenous knowledge, hopefully leading to a more holistic and culturally inclusive service to a population of different backgrounds. Such collaboration and integration of Western and indigenous knowledge may be a source of professional stimulation as well as a benefit to health-care consumers.

IntroductionWith the worldwide increase of severe obesity, the demand for and performance of bariatric surgery has increased.ObjectiveTo show the importance of the group therapy approach in the research and treatment of the surgery's psychological consequences.MethodClinical method of research, through weekly open therapeutic groups with patients that have undergone bariatric surgery.ResultsAfter the surgery the patients: feel empty, which leads them to search for alternative routes to give their lives meaning, some healthy, such as exercising intensely, others unhealthy, such as addictions, especially the consumption of alcohol; they are divided between the control of impulses sensation that the surgery provides and the food temptation that generates anguish, conflicts and fears of failing and gaining weight again; they experience the presence of new identity elements that arise with the weight loss and that lead to feelings of strangeness in relation to themselves and their personality; they are not stigmatized anymore and assume new social roles, with an important improvement of their self-esteem and social functioning; they may experience conflicts that are hard to handle in parental and marital relationships, especially due to jealousy and competitiveness.ConclusionsDespite the undeniable benefits that the bariatric surgery provides to the patients, psychological conflicts arise. The bariatric surgery is a procedure that causes, in addition to massive weight loss, deep changes in the patients’ psychic structure that, if well conducted in what concerns psychotherapy, lead to a significant improvement of the patient's life quality.

Abstract Aotearoa-New Zealand is expecting the number of older adults to double in the next 20 years. Despite publicly funded health and welfare support for older citizens, the aging experience differs across ethnic groups. This creates opportunities and challenges for health and social services to deliver culturally safe and equitable care for all older New Zealanders. Longitudinal and large data sets are pivotal for characterizing the aging experience from birth to advanced age. The New Zealand research funding system responded to predicted demographic changes by increasing funding in order to inform and address key health and well-being issues for older people. In addition, government strategies and policies increasingly focus on social aspects of aging and health inequities and require researchers and organizations to be better connected to end-users. New Zealand needs to continue to fund research that identifies unique and courageous service delivery solutions that result in positive social, financial, psychological, and physical aging for older New Zealanders.

Compassionate care is a foundation of the National Health Service (NHS). However, several high-profile inquiries into healthcare failures in the NHS suggest compassion is often absent in our hospitals. Ensuing policies mandate healthcare professionals to ‘show more compassion’ but, as the psychological evidence-base indicates, this instruction neglects the complexity of this social emotion. This paper applies the psychological research on compassion to modern healthcare settings with the aim of creating a better understanding of the pathways leading to uncompassionate care. A review of the empirical evidence suggests a range of psychological factors modulate compassion. In particular, the psychological literature indicates the human compassion system is adaptive, highly attuned to its environment. As such, a healthcare professional’s ability to experience and display compassionate behaviour will be, in part, determined by the environment in which they practise; that is, aspects of the organisational environment will either facilitate or inhibit compassion. This paper argues that the typical organisational set-up of a modern healthcare setting seriously undermines compassionate care. Organisational features frequently associated with uncompassionate care include the understaffing of hospital wards, excessive working shift patterns and the dogged focus on achieving service efficiencies—each has been identified as contributing to the alarming breakdown of compassionate care at the centre of several healthcare failings. Policies focusing on culture change in the NHS neglect the growing psychological evidence base on compassion, but by applying a psychological understanding of compassion to healthcare settings, we can begin to adequately understand and address the real causes of uncompassionate care.

Contesting this stereotype, this paper surfaces the individualistic consumption facets of consumers within a collectivist cultural setting, describing the compensating role servicescapes may play and the service marketing opportunities they present.Design/methodology/approachWithin a Chinese cultural research frame, a qualitative grounded approach is adopted that surfaces subconscious metaphors of private consumption through photo elicitation, deep psychological metaphor elicitation and triangulated with field observation.FindingsIndividuals within a collectivist culture do actively seek private psychic space to regenerate the self and prepare for social obligations heavily influenced by Confucian norms. Servicescapes play an important role in private consumption as they provide both a physical and mental oasis of privacy not easily obtainable in regular life and work.Practical implicationsService providers could offer East Asian consumers a package that includes the individual aspect of their value system, whenever and however they see suitable. More specifically, servicescapes can be designed to provide services that facilitate consumer restoration by implementing the mental metaphors consumers of have this process.Social implicationsA stereotype of a consumption has grown around Chinese consumers that while not totally false, misses a vital aspect of human values and risks missing profitable market niches. Consideration of the whole person's collective-individualistic cycle benefits both the consumer and the business.Originality/valueMoving beyond a one-dimensional description of East Asian consumer behavior, focused on collective values, we show the key role servicescapes play in private consumption. A psychological renewal of the self, in preparation to re-enter the collective, show the multiple aspects of Asian consumers.

The study aims to identify the extent of women’s awareness of the meaning of advanced age and the nature of the psycho-social aspects of health that they face in the advanced stages of life to come up with a suggested proposal for the contribution of social services to the development of women’s awareness of aspects of advanced life stages from a cognitive perspective. The samples of the study are women older than 40 who are either in their perimenopause or menopause phase. The size of the sample is (208) woman; (104) women from the health center Al-Olaya and (104) women from the health center in Al-Suleimaniah. The study results showed a decline in their awareness that this stage in their age constitutes the flow and movement phase (productivity and contribution) versus recession and showed a likely rate of (0.22 %) and came last in the results. Results of the study also showed low response rates regarding health and physical aspects such as the occurrence of hot flashes (12%), reduced fertility (9.95), and osteoporosis (7.5%). These rates underscore the lack of awareness of the respondents concerning these variables. On the other hand, the study showed a high awareness of the respondents with respect to psychological aspects such as the awareness of the feeling of neglect and lack of interest by others scored highest. Society’s perception of advanced age is one of the social realities which received (7.13 %) by respondents. The study recommends the need to activate the contribution of social services in the increase of women›s awareness of health, psychological and social manifestations of menopause and beyond

The article presents results of social, psychological and clinical aspects of suicidal behaviour of alcohol addicts and drug addicts with incomplete suicide attempts, admitted to the Department of crisis states and psychosomatic disorders, Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Ambulance Service from November 2014 to June 2015. The majority of addicts (70%) showed an affective kind of suicidal actions. During an acute post-suicidal period all examined patients revealed value-oriented approach to life. Conflict becomes irrelevant as a result of expressed fear of death and fear of social and transcendental consequences of an suicide act. Alcohol addicts feel guilty towards relatives and others, and need of their support. They have significantly increased fear to loss of social identity. Drug addicts have maintained negative view of near and distant future events, they consider the act of suicide as an effective and radical way of solving life problems. Based on our findings we concluded that the risk of repeat suicide attempts in patients with alcohol dependence can be caused by the weakness of self-management skills and lack of microsocial environmental support, while a similar risk in persons with drug addiction can be due to negative view of their own future and the degree of social maladjustment.

Abstract. Many studies discuss the economic and technical aspects of flood warnings. Less attention has been given to the social and psychological patterns that affect alert services. In particular, the literature focuses on warnings activated in river basins or marine environments without providing clear evidence of relevance to Mediterranean coastal areas, even though these are subjected to growing flood risk related to climate change. This paper is a first attempt to bridge this gap. Our research develops an in- depth analysis of the village of Cesenatico on the Adriatic Sea coast. Here the municipality adopted two complementary warning systems: a siren and an alert via Short Message Service (SMS). The analysis focuses on a survey conducted in 2011 and 2012 with 228 participants. The relationships between social and behavioural variables and warning services are investigated, and so are flood preparedness and information dissemination. Qualitative evidence from informal interviews is used to support the understanding of key responses. The conclusions show how different social and behavioural patterns can influence the effectiveness and use of warning systems, regardless of the technology adopted and the structural mitigation measures implemented. Education, training and accountability are seen to be critical elements for improvement. Finally, the statistical output is used to suggest new questions and new directions for research.

Little is known about the current character of occupational therapy practice for Parkinson's disease in the United Kingdom. The study aimed to document this in order to inform plans for a future multicentre randomised controlled trial. Two hundred and forty-two occupational therapists that treated people with Parkinson's disease were sent a questionnaire regarding demographics, service organisation and therapy content. One hundred and sixty-nine occupational therapists (70%) responded. They had worked with people with Parkinson's disease for a median of 6 years and personally treated a median of 15 people with Parkinson's disease annually. Most (86%) were at senior grade or above; 87% worked in the National Health Service and 12% in social services. Forty per cent worked in specialist Parkinson's disease clinics. Most (79%) felt that they needed more specialist postgraduate training. Occupational therapists are employed in both health and social care settings. The character of the occupational therapy is often determined by the location in which it is provided. Current occupational therapy appears to focus on functional activities rather than on the wider social and psychological aspects of occupation. Many occupational therapists felt that they needed more specialist postgraduate training to treat people with Parkinson's disease effectively.

Purpose – Narrative therapy uses psychological thinking to help people reconnect with important aspects of their lives that have become subjugated by a dominant problem story. Collective narrative practices (CNPs) such as the tree of life (ToL) metaphor apply these principles to communities. Limited research suggests that ToL groups benefit service users and staff in inpatient settings. The purpose of this paper is to explore the utility of a pilot ToL group, run in an inpatient treatment ward. Design/methodology/approach – Nine participants attended a seven-week ToL group. Eight service users and two facilitators contributed to the evaluation. Qualitative data were derived from interviews and questionnaires and analysed from a social constructionist perspective using inductive thematic analysis. Findings – Three themes were generated: first, a sense of community – service user and staff relationships developed both inside and outside of the group, through sharing personal experiences. Second, rediscovering identity – participants reconnected with important aspects of their lives, which helped them to plan their recovery. Third, usefulness of the metaphor – service users and staff reflected on useful aspects of the ToL metaphor and how groups could be improved in the future. Data collection methods were key limitations of the study. Further groups should be conducted, whilst considering means of developing CNPs and their evaluation in this setting. Originality/value – Few evaluations of ToL groups have been conducted in inpatient settings. This research outlines considerations for setting up and evaluating ToL groups and highlights their value for service users and staff.

The article highlights the problem of the absence of an inclusive environment for people with disabilities as a factor in the declarative nature of inclusive reforms. Actual barriers and problems that prevent people with disabilities from participating actively in society are described. These barriers require an integrated approach to develop practical solution and minimize them. Pedagogical aspect of terms "inclusion" and "inclusive environment" is the most developed (right now). Nevertheless, the main idea of the pedagogical concept of inclusion is the creation of a "school for all" that meets the common European standards and the mission of creating a society for all. So the idea of inclusivity at this point has a broader meaning than simply creating the right environment at school. The key elements of social and pedagogical aspects are recognition of diversity, elimination of inequalities, minimization of barriers and creation of conditions in which any exclusion in all spheres of life is impossible. Psychological aspect of inclusion is to understand psychological well-being as an important element of it. Psychological conditions of an inclusive environment should contribute to the individual's experience of subjective well-being. Based on the etymology of the word, you can describe inclusion as the process of forming a single whole by combining different parts. Having analyzed the social, pedagogical and psychological aspects of defining this concept, we believe that it is only whole environment in which inclusion must be realized. Thus, an inclusive environment is a human environment that provides conditions for inclusion of all persons into the spheres of society through the elimination of any barriers, taking into account the diversity of people. The integrated concept gives the opportunity to scientifically substantiate the design of new projects, programs and creation of inclusive social services.

Many Russians, left without work, share their experiences on the Internet. It is interesting to analyze who unemployment chooses as its victims and how these unemployed perceive and assess the consequences of their situation. To answer these questions, a study was conducted using the method of content analysis. The study revealed how the problem of unemployment is reflected in Russian social networks. The intensity of the discussion of this problem in 2018 is increasing. There is a significant difference between the desired and the actual salary in the future workplace. Many applicants are faced a mismatch of skills obtained during their studies at the universities and those required by the employer. A special place in the comments takes the problem of the work experience and the specifics of its understanding by personnel services, management and applicants. An analysis of the comments’ information indicates that men are more dissatisfied with the labour market and inclined to “give up” falling into depression. They see more clearly the problems that hinder their successful employment and often perceive these problems as unsolvable. In general, the perception of the unemployment is related to the recognition of the accident and injustice of getting into the state of the unemployed. Therefore, people specifically create Internet-communities of support, where they share their hardships, but they can not find any valid reason for their current situation. The only rational explanation for this situation seems to be the primary attention in hiring to the kinship and friendship with the candidate or his/her entourage. There is a high level of despair and depression in the comments, which is due to the predominance of the “internal locus of control” in the mentality of Russians: they are used to control the situation in the sphere of work and labour relations. For many years, employment in the country has been very stable, and nowadays situation is seen by them as something inexplicable and uncontrollable.

The article deals with the problem of the presence of psychological and pedagogical principles of forming a communicative block in the structure of entrepreneurial competence of future specialists` in the service sector. The analysis of the theoretical works of national and foreign experts is carried out. It shows that there is a tendency among scientists to research the social aspects of the entrepreneurship phenomenon. Approaches of researchers to clarify the structure of entrepreneurial competence are considered. The existence of intellectual, motivational-volitional and communicative blocks as parts of entrepreneurial competence is substantiated. It is revealed that by spheres of activity the entrepreneur` personal qualities can be grouped into organizational, creative, managerial and communicative blocks. It is established that the importance of communicative abilities is determined by the functions of the communication process as a psychological basis for entrepreneurship. The set of personal traits, and skills that ensure the success of communication is outlined. An attempt was made to characterize them according to the results of a study of pupils and students (future specialists of the service sector).

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the satisfaction aspects among disabled students in some universities in the Middle East and to examine the impact of socio-demographic factors on such satisfaction with regard to the services provided by their universities. Design/methodology/approach The sample consisted of 251 subjects from Oman, Qatar, Jordan and Yemen. Comparative means were used to examine the importance of satisfaction aspects and analysis of variance (ANOVA) as well as multi-analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used to examine the role of the socio-demographic factors in explaining the disabled students’ satisfaction. Satisfaction aspects included: social, psychological, educational, environmental and health, while the socio-demographic variables included were: country, specialization, kind of disability, gender GPA and degree of disability. Findings The findings revealed that social satisfaction was the greatest, followed by psychological, educational, environmental and health satisfaction in order. The results of the ANOVA revealed that all socio-demographic factors impacted significantly on the satisfaction of disabled students, except gender and the degree of disability. While, the MANOVA findings reported that Jordanian and Qatari students had higher educational and psychological satisfaction than Omani and Yemeni students. Research limitations/implications The present findings can be considered as limited and hard to generalize on all regions’ universities because the gap between them in disability services is very large. Some of universities have very good services, while the disability services of other universities are very limited or not existed. Practical implications The findings will be helping the educators and administrative people to offer more services to disabled students. Originality/value This is the first comparative study in the Middle East area.

IntroductionBariatric surgery is a procedure that results in a complex network of emotional experiences. One of the objectives of surgery is to bring about an improvement in the quality of life. Many patients fail because of psychological difficulties, a fact that reinforces the need for specific studies on the psychological dynamic.Objectiveto understand the meanings for patients when undergoing bariatric surgery.MethodClinical-qualitative method.ResultsThe main emotional experiences are social re-insertion, personal acceptance, the risk of disillusion with the results of surgery, recovery of self esteem, improvement in quality of life and in body image.ConclusionsIt is important to identify those aspects of a patients’ psychological make-up which would be expected to improve or worsen their prognosis, and to provide the necessary pre- and post-operative psychosocial counselling. We offer some markers to assist the health professionals, which will allow an appropriate psychosocial plan to be developed and help the health team to identify factors that may affect prognosis. We propose some recommendations for a better psychological evolution: psychotherapy focusing on improving self-esteem; identifying feelings of shame related to a greater exposure; identifying how patients deal with feelings of competitiveness, envy and jealousy; assessing if obesity has defensive function; providing realistic parameters with regards the results of surgery; distinguishing between realistic necessity for plastic surgery and unreal expectations; observation of deviations to other compulsions; acceptance of skin folds and scars; clarifying the misunderstanding between emotional and physical hunger; confidence in own ability to adopt new behavioural models.

Purpose The provision of home and community supports can enable people to successfully age-in-place by improving physical and mental health, supporting social participation and enhancing independence, autonomy and choice. One challenge concerns the integration of place-based supports available as older people transition into affordable housing. Sustainable solutions need to be developed and implemented with the full involvement of communities, service organizations and older people themselves. Partnership building is an important component of this process. The purpose of this paper is to detail the intricacies of developing partnerships with low-income older people, local service providers and nonprofit housing associations in the context of a Canadian housing development. Design/methodology/approach A community-based participatory approach was used to inform the data collection and partnership building process. The partnership building process progressed through a series of democratized committee meetings based on the principles of appreciative inquiry, four collaboration cafés with nonprofit housing providers and four community mapping workshops with low-income older people. Data collection also involved 25 interviews and 15 photovoice sessions with the housing tenants. The common aims of partnership and data collection were to understand the challenges and opportunities experienced by older people, service providers and nonprofit housing providers; identify the perspectives of service providers and nonprofit housing providers for the provision and delivery of senior-friendly services and resources; and determine actions that can be undertaken to better meet the needs of service providers and nonprofit housing providers in order to help them serve older people better. Findings The partnership prioritized the generation of a shared vision together with shared values, interests and the goal of co-creating meaningful housing solutions for older people transitioning into affordable housing. Input from interviews and photovoice sessions with older people provided material to inform decision making in support of ageing well in the right place. Attention to issues of power dynamics and knowledge generation and feedback mechanisms enable all fields of expertise to be taken into account, including the experiential expertise of older residents. This resulted in functional, physical, psychological and social aspects of ageing in place to inform the new build housing complex. Research limitations/implications The time and effort required to conduct democratized partnerships slowed the decision-making process. Originality/value The findings confirm that the drive toward community partnerships is a necessary process in supporting older people to age well in the right place. This requires sound mechanisms to include the voice of older people themselves alongside other relevant stakeholders. Ageing well in a housing complex requires meaningful placemaking to include the functional, physical, psychological and social aspects of older people’s everyday life in respect to both home and community.

Abstract We investigated the dimensional structure of mental health among aging Korean Veterans using latent profile analysis (LPA) on posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD), late onset stress symptomology (LOSS), and psychosocial well-being (PWB). The Korean Vietnam War Veterans Study consists of 367 men (Mage=72, SD=2.66). LPA identified five classes of mental health as best fitting the data. Most men were in the normal (38%) and moderate distress (31%) groups, while smaller proportions were in the low affect (13%) and severe distress (7%) groups. The resilient group (12%) had low PTSD, medium LOSS, and high PWB, and were highest on optimism, positive appraisals of military service, and social support. Negative and positive aspects of mental health outcomes were on separate dimensions rather than on a single bipolar dimension. Service providers should attempt to both reduce Veterans’ negative psychological symptoms and increase psychosocial well-being.
