Abstract:
Teachers who teach the integrated subject of social studies are often trained in only one of the subjects involved, so that the subject expertise in the subject conferences is distributed among different people. It is therefore necessary for teachers to cooperate with each other in order to develop lessons in social studies. This is where subject conferences come into focus as committees for lesson development. On the basis of expert interviews, we use grounded theory methodology to reconstruct which conditions and contexts are decisive for cooperation in subject conferences from the perspecti

Judith Butler's theory of the constitution of subjectivity conceptualizes the subject as a performative materialization of its social environment. In her theory Butler utilizes Louis Althusser's notion of interpellation, and she critiques the constitutive paradoxes to which its tautological framing leads. Although there is no pre‐existing subject, as it is constituted in the turn to the interpellative hail, Butler nonetheless theorizes a guilt and compulsion acting on an “individual” that compels his or her turn to answer the hail. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter centres on class and examines how banks made inroads into the workplace. It analyses the so-called cheque accounts for wages reform, which was where the bankification of everyday life started. In the late 1950s, Swedish commercial banks began offering payroll services. Current accounts with chequebooks were opened for both white- and blue-collar employees, blurring the boundaries of the class-based financial system and changing personal financial practices. Wage earners were turned into bank customers and the commercial banks became retail companies, selling a wide range of products to a broad public. Still, this chapter suggests that one should be wary of overemphasising the importance of the self-governing financial subjects of Foucauldian studies. Making and controlling new financial subjects was accomplished through cultural technologies rooted in a hierarchical value system permeated by class (defined by production rather than consumption). A wage-earner identity (the quintessential subject category of the Swedish welfare state), rather than a finance consumer or investor identity, proved instrumental in the initial phase of the bankification process. The new financial subjects were created as much with the help of the old identities as with models imagined for the new ones.

Abstract:
AbstractRecently, the “social brain” (i.e., how the brain works in social context and the mechanisms for our social behavior) has gained focus in neuroscience literature – largely due to the fact that recently developed techniques allow studying different aspects of human social cognition and its brain correlates. In this context, hyperscanning techniques (Montague et al., Neuroimage 16(4):1159–1164, 2002) open the horizon for human interaction studies, allowing for the evaluation of interbrain connectivity. These techniques represent methods for simultaneously recording signals from different brains when subjects are interacting. In this chapter, we will explore the potentials of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which are techniques based on blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal. We will start with a brief explanation of the BOLD response basic principles and the mechanisms involved in fMRI and fNIRS measurements related to brain function. We will then discuss the foundation of the social brain, based on the first studies, with one subject per data acquisition, to allow for understanding the new possibilities that hyperscanning techniques offer. Finally, we will focus on the scientific literature reporting fMRI and fNIRShyperscanning contribution to understand the social brain.

Abstract:
AbstractMost transitions over the course of one’s life are embedded in organizations. Therefore, organizations can be understood as powerful actors in dealing with transitions. In organizations, subjects learn and practice requirements. And, if needed, the failure of an unsuccessful transition can be compensated for. But an organization can also be a shelter, a place for subjects to retreat from demands or to develop subversive practices. Accordingly, it would be insufficient to see organizations as merely institutionalized frameworks for transitions. Organizations are dynamic entities – sometimes more so, sometimes less so. And as such, they also undergo transitions. Using two empirical case studies, a relational perspective on the relationship between transitions and organizations is elaborated upon. After a brief introduction to an understanding of organizations as collective subjects, in a first approach we refer to transitions of organizations in their institutional environments. In the second approach, we focus on the interior and examine from different perspectives how transitions are produced and shaped in organizations. In a final synopsis, we discuss the key insights of a relational perspective on organizations for transition research.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter elaborates conceptual and theoretical insights to advance a conflict- and power-oriented perspective for a critical conceptualization of environmental communication. To this purpose, the chapter develops and builds upon insights from the anthropology of power and the epistemologies of the South. Within this context, the chapter focuses on the theoretical contributions of Paulo Freire and Eric Wolf to critically approach the relations between communication, power, and conflicts within social-ecological relations. Empirically, the chapter offers an analysis of struggles for water justice and water democracy in Chile which is based on interviews, observations, and analysis of documents conducted during fieldwork in three regions and rural areas of Chile. The chapter argues for a critical theorizing of environmental communication to better understand and explain the meanings of normative views of environmental communication, and to also understand how such normative views cannot be separated from the interests of subjects situated in contingent social-ecological relations and conflicts.

Abstract:
AbstractErik Jedvardsson, king of Sweden, was slain in c. AD 1160 and has been venerated as a saint since the end of the twelfth century. It is clear from historical records and osteological studies that the bones, kept in a reliquary in Uppsala Cathedral, have received much attention over the centuries. Initially they served as intercessors with God and were reverently touched and divided for distribution to other institutions. After the Reformation the remains were kept in a reliquary and exclusively functioned as heirlooms embodying a legendary fallen king. In the Age of Enlightenment, the authenticity of the bones came under scrutiny. Eventually, they turned into subjects of scientific research and no less than three thorough anthropological investigations have been conducted since 1915. The transformation of Saint Erik’s body from a Christian relic to an anthropological specimen not only testifies to the strong agency of the remains but can be traced to several shifts in the ‘cultural paradigm’. Although the historical understanding of the medieval king has not changed significantly over time, these paradigm shifts have inevitably affected the narrative and how the bones have been handled.

Abstract Vostral provides much-needed insight into the link between women’s bodily experiences with tampons and twentieth-century developments in material science, corporate research, and gynecological observations about menstrual cycles. She examines how design modifications to tampons, changes in material composition, and the cultivation of women test subjects exposed scientific assumptions, ideas about safety, and attitudes concerning gendered and menstruating bodies. Focusing on the practical work of tampon testing, Vostral examines the impact of broad cultural conditions: prevailing ideas about women’s bodies, gender differences, and the role of science and medicine in optimizing well-being. Finally, she shows how patterns of social power and privilege configured this research, with evidence taking different forms over time.
