AbstractThis article aims to validate the Leadership Daily Practice (LDP) log, an instrument for conducting research on leadership in schools. Using a combination of data sources—namely, a daily practice log, observations, and open-ended cognitive interviews—the authors evaluate the validity of the LDP log. Formal and informal leaders were asked to complete the LDP log for 2 weeks; observers shadowed a subsample of leaders in each school, 1 day per week. Using the three sources of data, the authors analyzed interview responses (specifically, the participants’ interpretations of the log); they matched log entries with observer recordings; and they compared (a) the characteristics of the social interactions that were entered into the log with (b) the overall sample of interactions that occurred while observers shadowed participants. The study shows that LDP log entries capture school leadership interactions as recorded by independent observers; it also demonstrates that study participants, with some exceptions, were not biased toward reporting certain types of interactions over others. Still, some log terminologies were problematic for participants, as was the limited sampling period of 2 weeks. The authors propose ways to (a) change the LDP log to reflect the concerns raised by participants in the cognitive interviews and (b) alter the sampling scheme to capture leadership around the school year. The LDP log is less costly and time-consuming than in-depth ethnographic studies, and it is an important tool for researchers who aim to collect data in schools, one that reaches beyond surveys.

Connections between principal leadership activities, school context, and student achievement are examined within this paper. Data for this quantitative study are from the 2013 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) and the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The eight countries of examination participated in both the TALIS and PISA and the researchers merged datasets, yielding a study sample of 1,301 schools. This paper supports a context-specific view of instructional leadership. When looking across countries, the researchers found different practices were more strongly associated with the academic achievement of students, and suggest that school leaders have a meaningful overall relationship with academic achievement, both directly and indirectly. This study therefore supports prior research about the direct and indirect effects of instructional leadership. Further study, which accounts for differences in family academic resources and school-level opportunities to learn, will better illuminate the connection between instructional leadership practices and academic achievement.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of authentic leadership together with the leader emotional expressivity of optimism on follower affective commitment towards the organization. This study was undertaken in the format of an experiment that is followed by a survey in which four groups of different fictional leader types were created, and respondents were asked to answer questions about their self-rated potential affective commitment towards the organization with the assumption that the respondents were actually working with the described leader. The findings of this study reveal that both authentic and inauthentic leaders who display optimism arouse higher levels of affective comitment by their followers as compared to their non-optimistic counterparts.

This chapter is in the area of human capital development in United Kingdom (UK) enterprises and investigates innovative methods involving an evolutionary approach. The objective is to investigate the importance of human capital development in terms of employee recruitment and selection, engagement, and the management of human capital. The research question asks, How important are these themes to human capital development? The chapter presents a collection of 12 research studies in three themes of human capital development. These are Theme 1: new forms of recruitment and selection; Theme 2: employee engagement; and Theme 3: leadership and stress management. Several methodologies have been used in the studies reported and these include case study research, mixed methods, primary and secondary data, qualitative research, questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews, statistical evaluations, and survey research. The purpose of this paper is to provide an empirical examination of the factors affecting voluntary eService adoption in a public sector work environment. The model examined was constructed following a thorough review of relevant literature on technology adoption through the framework of Theory of Interpersonal Behaviour. Structural equation modelling was used to examine a model assessed through participant responses to survey data for a sample of 515 respondents working in Australian City Councils. The results indicate that an individual's attitudes and beliefs have a significant influence on eService utilisation. Results also suggest that organisational conditions such as training, leadership support and organisational preparedness act to enhance eService utilisation indirectly through their effect on an individual's attitudes and beliefs. The current study provides a model of examining and explaining voluntary technology adoption behaviour in the workplace.

This chapter relies on the “new psychology of leadership”—an approach to analyzing leadership process relying on social identity theory—to explain the relationship between Vladimir Putin and the Russian people. The main insights of this theory highlight the key elements that make Putin’s leadership effective. These are the shared popular perceptions: (1) that Putin is “one of us”; (2) that he is “doing it for us”; (3) that he is “crafting a sense of us”; and (4) that he is “making us matter.” In this chapter I address each of these elements conceived as a glue that links the followers to the leader and discuss how these sentiments get manifested in people’s own articulations. This chapter also discusses the results of an original survey experiment that aimed at testing the political implications of prompting insecure collective identity.

The quantitative research samples were 120 respondents in 2 cities by purposive sampling (with the criteria of women who actively participated in watershed conservation in urban areas). The results show that women's leadership as environmental activists contribute to the sustainability of watershed management. For the sustainability of women's leadership, it is necessary to integrate social, economic, and ecological dimensions by focusing on aspects of women's empowerment to improve innovation capabilities in change adaptation, access to information and local institutions will support participatory approaches in watershed conservation to increase women's participation.

Women face multi-faceted challenges in participating in management position due to different factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that affect participation of women in leadership positions in Bahir dar city administration. To address this objective, the study adopted mixed research methods with descriptive survey design. A total of 190 women public civil servants were taken as a sample. Moreover, a key informant interview with women in leadership positions was conducted. In addition, FGD were also a very important data-gathering instrument for this study. The findings revealed that there are three major factors for women's low participation in leadership positions, i.e. institutional, socio-cultural and individual factors. Those factors have decisive contributions for low participation of women in leadership positions. With proper implementation of women's policies in the organization, equal treatment during assignment leadership positions, and creating awareness in society that woman are capable for leadership positions.
