Abstract:
The literature and research investigating why people choose social work as a career has tended to focus on motivational traits rather than on the choice experience itself. Whereas the vocational sector has moved to include a focus on the narrative processes involved with selecting a career, much of the social work research fails to capture the meaning-making processes individuals engage in to make sense of their career choices within their personal and social contexts. This research project describes the meaning-making processes two students participating in the social work program at Central Queensland University and I employ to understand our career choice experiences. Over a period of four years, using a research approach that combines Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) narrative inquiry with Riessman’s (2003) emphasis on social positioning within narratives, Geraldine, John and I explore the interplay between individual, community and professional agendas in our past, present and imagined career choice experiences – particularly focusing on the impact of gender. Identifying the importance of caring as a hallmark of the profession and what draws us to social work, this co-constructed research text highlights the agendas that predominantly support women’s entrance into the profession and challenge men’s participation. Drawing on the metaphor of a quilt to describe our career choice experience, this project draws attention to the importance for aspiring social workers to carefully choose, cut and join together bits of gendered narrative material to create a professional story that both legitimises their entrance into the profession and to position them within the larger career sector.

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the construction of a digital environment for bibliographical memory of social work at the Institute of Psychology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. For many centuries, the library has been considered as the designated place to store, organize, disseminate and preserve registered information. This way, the library is recognized to be a space for memory, which utilizes technology towards the democratization of knowledge, which is also where the dissertation’s researcher works. This study is justified due to the lack of digital data on Social Work memory, concerning the bibliographical aspect at UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul). As theoretical categories, social memory and the library are considered as memory environments. This quantitative and qualitative research utilizes documental research from the university’s data base (Sabi), analyzing the existing library collection from 2009 to 2012, which is when the Social Work course was established at the university. During this documental research, 356 book titles and 41 journals were identified. To analize the obtained data from the identified books and journals, it was utilized the content analysis and statistical treatment through frequency distribution. A blog was created at the end of this investigation, which was entitled: The Bibliographical Memory of Social Work as a digital environment for bibliographical memory.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the potential of one way of facilitating and stimulating collaboration in Library and Information Science (LIS), through a specific scientific collaboration activity: creating, sharing and reusing data collection instruments, such as interview guides, questionnaires, and observation protocols. The four studies reported in the thesis can be read as a linear narrative, each study building on the previous and contributing to the following ones. Together the four studies describe the process exploring social and contextual aspects of LIS; developing requirements and designing a working prototype collaboratory; and evaluating how the prototype collaboratory was perceived by LIS professionals. Overall, the results show that whereas the benefits of an LIS collaboratory reported by the study participants focused on the greater good for LIS, the challenges reported focused on the individuals’ perspectives. Hence, a tension exists between supporting the greater good, and challenges for individuals concerning sharing and reusing data collection instruments in an LIS collaboratory. The thesis emphasizes the implications for the LIS discipline when new ways of working with data collection instruments would be introduced; the implications of addressing needs of a diverse target audience; and the implications for further design iterations of an LIS collaboratory, including rewarding contributions, and ensuring quality content in a collaboratory.

Academic dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Library and Information Science at the University of Gothenburg and the University of Borås to be publicly defended on Wednesday 11 June 2014 at 13.15 in lecture room E310, University of Borås, Allégatan 1, Borås

Abstract:
The inclusion process of people with disabilities in the labor market has been a subject largely discussed recently, thanks to affirmative action policies implemented in our country that are, slowly, but irreversibly changing the reality of employees with disabilities. Nowadays, virtual libraries arise as elements of education throughout life and are important aspect of human mediation action in a socio-historical perspective. This encourages us to question how one can create a virtual library gathering information contemplating assistive technology use‟s solutions at workplaces? Thus, the creation of a collaborative platform aims to promote inclusive labor process and, to this purpose, entities sites that seek social and labor inclusion of people with disabilities, accessibility both physical and digital and presence of technology as potentiating resources of inclusive processes are subjects of this investigation. Considerations towards Web design and requirements of usability, accessibility and interaction with users are also made. Thereby, using Internet resources available nowadays, we conducted a multi case‟s qualitative research, in seven large companies located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and on-site observations, and the following questions guided this research: What information is relevant? How to present this information in a way that all can access? Which are the information needs of Human Resources managers and other managers involved in inclusion‟s process? Iteration with the subjects proved to be crucial for the establishment of the initial requirements of SolAssist virtual library, that aims to facilitate the dissemination of relevant information to managers, through socialization of assistive technologies, adaptations or solutions already in use in production environments. We conclude that there is low presence of assistive technology, adaptations and solutions in the visited companies, because ignorance in this regard is still very large. Therefore, it is expected that the collaborative platform that we have proposed to build will become an affordable and practical consultation instrument for managers, where they can seek information and assist effectively at the labor inclusion processes of people with disabilities.
