Abstract:
The study presents the history and current status of social work education in Ethiopia. Five heads of social work schools, eight social work educators and 35 social work professionals participated in the study. Data from participants were gathered through online survey. Qualitative tools were designed for each group and distributed by email. In addition, review of literature was made to generate data about history of social work in Ethiopia. Results of the study revealed that social work education was closed for 30 years [1974-2004]. In less than two decades since its re-birth in 2004, social work education is expanded to 13 universities. The study further revealed that social work education in Ethiopia experiences various challenges related to poor curricula contents, limited number of social work educators, and absence of coordination to regulate the quality of education and practice. The study suggests the need for immediate revision of curricula and creating harmonized and modularized curriculum. The study also suggests to establish a national social work council and professional association to regulate the quality of social work education and practice.

Abstract:
The development of globalization, information technology and knowledge in the society has made social functioning more and more complicated. It causes a lot of new social problems (for example, social exclusion which results in reducing person’s self-dependence, when own personality is not really estimated, the identification of own needs and aims, the awareness of strong and weak points, as well as self-motivation when a teenager with a constructive approach motivates himself/herself and develops self-control thus improving self-dependence). Teenagers are not able to cope with both own life experience and they cannot perceive the aspects of social environment. A social pedagogue in work with teenagers is as an assistant and advisor, as a teacher, paying attention to such categories in teenager’s life as the improvement of self-dependence. The aim of the work is to determine pre conditions for the improvement of teenagers’ self-dependence at X Elementary school. The work includes the results of theoretical research about self-dependence, cognitions about the socialization process.

Our approach is supported by ethnographic work with teenage girls belonging to music communities built around One Direction and Justin Bieber, and rooted in participant observation. Firstly, we will show how participating in communities of practice, undertaking tasks which give meaning to group activities, contributes to the construction of a social and cultural identity supported by the interpretation, production and dissemination of texts. Secondly, we will examine how subjective and personal identities related to feelings, emotions and situations of support are also built by the fan community.</p><div class="grammarly-disable-indicator"> </div><div class="grammarly-disable-indicator"> </div><div class="grammarly-disable-indicator"> </div>

Abstract:
The use of information and communication technologies has greatly expanded and has far-reaching implications for social work practice. Following an international review of the literature, this study explored how social workers consider the issues associated with integration of e-therapy into their social work practice. A survey of Israeli social workers revealed that only 4 percent have actual experience with e-therapy. Respondents judged disabled persons and those with mobility restrictions, caregivers of the chronically ill, new parents, the chronically ill, and teenagers as the most appropriate target populations. Attitudes toward benefits, barriers, and training predicted the applicability of e-therapy in practice.

Abstract:
The goal of the Independent Living Project for Deaf/Blind Youth, described here, was to maximize the independence of teenagers who were multiply handicapped due to deafness, blindness, and mental retardation. The teenagers had been overprotected and sheltered in their previous environments. Their educational programs had emphasized one-on-one instruction and direct supervision so that few interaction skills or independent work skills were learned. The project included an independent living apartment in which a unique video monitoring system was used for indirect supervision. Skill areas of home management, personal management, social/ emotional skills, work skills, and communication skills were emphasized. The teenagers’ autonomy increased over the four and one-half years of the project. They learned many daily living and work skills they would not have learned in a more traditional program.

Abstract:
Background and aims. This survey evaluated the psycho-social impact of oral health on the quality of life in Romanian teenage and young adult orthodontic patients.Methods. Of the 300 standard questionnaires distributed in four dental offices, 125 questionnaires were returned. Each questionnaire contained 110 items, focusing on aspects like patients’ satisfaction, self-confidence, school/work performances and aesthetic concern, in relation to oral health. The patients were 16–25 years of age and all were undergoing or had undergone orthodontic treatment in the previous two years. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science software (SPSS), version 19.0.Results. 57.90% of the orthodontic patients participating in this study were happy about their dental status, 56.52% declared themselves not shy because of their oral health issues, 52.33% considered themselves as attractive to other people, and 57.29% replied (awarding a score between 8 and 10) that they were confident when smiling. Regarding self-confidence and school/work performances, 58% of the participants declared they avoided speaking in public because of the aspect of their teeth and 47.42% considered that their school/work performances during the fix appliance therapy stayed the same as before appliance. Nevertheless, the self-perceived facial aspect improved during orthodontic treatment (64.74% of replies had scores between 8 and 10 during the treatment versus 24.67% before the treatment). Several correlations were found between aspects such as psycho-social and functional variables, physical self-evaluation, and oral health issues.Conclusion. Patients’ satisfaction was improved during and after appliance therapy, for more than half of the participants. Self-confidence was low in relation to school/work performances; almost half of the patients reported stagnation in their school/work performances during the fix appliance therapy. However, more than 64% of the patients participating in this study were quite satisfied about their facial aspect during and after the orthodontic treatment. Thus, the common concerns of the patients anxious about their aspect during appliance therapy are not supported by the findings of this study.

It was revealed that a similar comprehensive analysis was carried out in 2011 by a group of scientists led by N. Humphrey. It was revealed that research of foreign scientists was carried out in the following areas: general issues of social competence; social competence of children of preschool and school age, social competence of students and adults in the aspect of professional growth; social competence in terms of medicine, psychology. The analysis of scientific works showed that in the field of research of foreign scientists lies the relationship between: student success, academic and social skills; intelligence, social intelligence and social competence; social competence, academic performance and behavior. It has been found that academic performance is often used as one of the criteria for assessing social competence. Foreign researchers associate the development of social competence with a positive influence on behavior, academic performance, personal success. The effectiveness of the formation of social competence depends on a positive attitude to the result, the use of active learning methods, productive discussions between peers, the use of joint group work in the classroom.

Abstract:
The school environment is a complex microcosm where the younger generation learns to adapt to live in society. The problem of school bullying is in the highlight. The purpose of the research is to study the correlations between “bullying structures” of the teenagers, living in their own families and in social rehabilitation centers for minors, and their choice of coping strategies. The hypothesis of the research assumes that teenagers will prefer different coping strategies depending on their place in the bullying structure and the place of living. The sample consisted of 62 teenagers aged 12-13 years old. On the grounds of the theoretical research, we distinguished psychological and social prerequisites of the phenomenon of school bullying. We and state that aggression and anxiety displaying by teenagers in a group cooperation are predictors of a bullying situation. The psychological testing allowed us to reveal bullying structures, components of aggressive behavior and school anxiety, and preferable coping strategies of adolescents. Using the Spearman’s rank correlation analysis enabled us to prove the hypothesis and to describe the preferable coping strategies of such bulling structures as “Bully”, “Bully’s assistant”, “Defender”, “Victim” and “Bystander” depending on the place of living of teenagers. The research has got a novelty and practical importance and the results are useful for work with teenagers in comprehensive schools and in social rehabilitation centers for minors.

Abstract:
Adolescence is a fundamental period in everyone’s life. Teenagers have for the first time the possibility to take on responsibility about their choices in many domains, building their own “lifestyle.” Among these domains, food is one of the most important considering the implications for their future health. Deep knowledge of teenagers’ behaviors and of factors affecting their choices can support tailored health policy and social marketing interventions for this population. The purpose of this article is to prospectively segment teenagers around food socialization factors as influencing factors of food preferences, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents. A cluster analysis (CA) was performed on a sample of 4,749 respondents aged 15 and 18 years coming from Tuscany (Italy). Considering food well-being and consumer socialization frameworks, the CA used three food socialization variables related to influences and source of information/advices at intrapersonal, interpersonal, and broader societal levels. Five distinct groups were identified and described, showing deep differences in the adolescents’ food behaviors corresponding to different socialization patterns. Adolescents who reported broader food socialization at all investigated levels present better lifestyle habits. Social marketers, policy makers, and health professionals can work on specific influencing food socialization factors for tailoring marketing interventions and increasing their positive impact on adolescents’ food behaviors.

Abstract:
Abstract During recent years, Swedish media have paid attention to young people’s presentations of self in Internet communities, claiming that these presentations are often sexually provocative. The present study aims at investigating young men’s and women’s presentations of self in Sweden’s largest Internet community, focusing specifically on how bodies are displayed. This is done through quantitative and qualitative content analyses of the photos of 88 users. Results show differences in what parts of their bodies the young men and women show: women tend to focus on faces, while men focus on torsos. Results also contradict the image depicted by the media, as very few photos in the sample can be described as provocative. One explanation offered here concerns the specific Internet community’s lack of anonymity, meaning that the interaction is steered by the same mechanisms and social pressures at work in offline environments.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of an empirical study on the personality traits of sexually active teenagers. The research identified the personality traits of teenagers who are inclined to look for sexual relations. The research focused on the following: motivation and values, implicit representations about sexual contacts, parent-child relations, and self-concept. The study comprised 465 individuals including 405 school students aged 14-16 and 60 mothers of the teenagers examined. The results demonstrate that teenagers' refusal to begin sexual life, provided they have this opportunity (i.e. a partner), is linked to their subjective perception of the basic values reflected in their consciousness. The research also focused on the features of teenagers' implicit representations with regard to sexual intercourse. This allowed to identify the role of sexual intercourse in teenagers' life. The factors regulating sexual relations in the age under study have been revealed. The research shows that teenage sexual intercourse is mainly driven by cognitive motives combined with the hedonistic (boys) and communicational/social ones (girls). Emotionally distant parents are another factor triggering sexual relations. The negatively critical attitude to sexual partners was also displayed, especially by girls. The attitude was expressed by teenagers even where they initiated sexual intercourse themselves, without been pressured into it by their partners. The study has an applied character and enables effective preventive and corrective work with sexually active teenagers.

Abstract:
The article examines the factors influencing the attacks by minors on educational institutions. The analysis of publications offering explanations and theoretical models of such crimes is performed. The authors present the results of their own qualitative analysis of data from an empirical study of 9 teenagers who attacked schools, and materials of criminal cases. The analysis is performed as part of a comprehensive forensic psychological and psychiatric examination. The data indicate the specific personality structure of adolescents and their existing mental disorders, as well as their special socio-psychological status in the classroom as outcasts and isolated. A compensatory mechanism of identity development is described with a focus on the role model of teenagers who attacked the Columbine school in the United States, and who imitated their actions. The role of the Internet in this process is evaluated. It is concluded that there is a need for a multidimensional analysis of such actions and appropriate preventive work.

Abstract:
Instant messaging (IM) was introduced in 1996. In the past few years, the majority of IM users have been teenagers. As the young IM users gradually enter the workforce, it is likely that their familiarity with IM will increase its acceptance as a business application. Consequently, the potential impact of IM in the workplace has become an important organizational issue. This study investigated the usefulness of IM for both social and work-related uses from young users' perspectives. A survey of over 500 college-age IM users was conducted. The survey data were used to identify factors that were important to the usefulness of IM. The results showed that young users correlated different features of IM with different aspects of usefulness. The ability to facilitate friendship development and personalized communication was viewed as an important feature for the social use of IM; for work-related uses, information richness and information volume were deemed as more desirable features for IM. The findings can be used as a foundation for future studies using knowledge workers in the workplace.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to look at the social impact that the internet has on the teenagers of "Arben Broci" school in Tirana. The study looks at the activities that teenagers engage themselves in on the internet, the hours they spend there, and the social influence that these activities have on them. By interviewing 100 people of different ages, some of which were interviewed in the high school, “Arben Broci” in Tirana, we have gathered qualitative and quantitative data through the use of a questionnaire. After the study, we concluded that the internet has both positive as well as negative impacts on socially isolated adolescents. We have seen that adolescents engage themselves in online chats through which they exchange data and information with people they do not know. This puts them at risk. In majority of the cases, they meet people whom they do not know their motives. The risk of child exposure to pornography and exploitation has increased along with the rise in internet use. The global nature of the internet also increases the child’s risk of meeting a predator. According to Wolfe & Higgings (2008), more attention has been given to online solicitation of sex from children. The positive social impact of the internet is that it creates an environment where teens can seek information needed for educational purposes. The study concludes that parents, teachers, and the government must be aware of the social impact of the internet on the lives of adolescents. Therefore, they must work together to minimize the harmful impacts of the internet on socially isolated students.

What does it mean to internationalize doctoral education by working abroad? What does it mean to internationalize doctoral education in one’s home country? This article offers a perspective based on the Social Work Education in Ethiopia Partnership, which established Ethiopia’s first-ever master’s degree in social work in 2004. To ensure sustainability of the MSW program, a doctoral program in Social Work and Social Development was launched in 2006. This article describes the development and research base of the doctoral program. Beginning in the first semester, teams of doctoral students join with poor communities in action research.Overall, these efforts lead to an emerging model of university-based development. Through engaged action research, faculty and students use human capital resources and the educational process to function as “development actors.” Some ideas for internationalizing doctoral education are offered. Deans and directors in the United States and Canada are challenged to expand doctoral education within a developing country and to prepare doctoral students to include international perspectives in their teaching and research.

Abstract:
The move from adolescence to adulthood is a pivotal transitional period rife with cultural, social and personal changes. It also involves an era of in-between moments: rather than a sudden change, teenagers spend years navigating the grey areas between adolescence and adulthood. This transition has been further complicated by the use of digital technologies (DTs) and computer-mediated communication (CMC) shaping teenagers’ experiences during this period. By utilizing UK communication regulator Ofcom’s Adults’ Media Lives dataset, this study longitudinally studies the same teenagers between 2006 and 2018. It observes how they are both aided and hindered by the use of DT and CMC over time, identifying three key aspects of their lives that are shaped during this transition – relationships with their parents, their friends and their move from school to work – as they strive for independence, agency and individuality.

Abstract:
The article deals with modern problems of improving educational work with modern Russian teenagers and young people who are experiencing negative effects of the consequences of long-term social instability and the loss of social guidelines for spiritual and moral development. The purpose of the article is to determine the current and modern directions of educational work with adolescents and young people. Research methods are analysis of sources, analysis and generalization of modern practical experience of pedagogical and socio-pedagogical activities, including the experience of the authors themselves. The authors identify the main characteristic features of modern socio-cultural problems of education of adolescents and young people, causing the need to change the strategy of educational activities. These problems are rooted in the absence of a coherent national idea supported by society, without which the constructive theses of the "Fundamentals of the state youth policy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025" are poorly integrated into educational practice. The authors prove the significance of the problem of social and civic passivity, the lack of psychological and pedagogical support for personal self-determination in society, spontaneous cultural practices of adolescents and young people, and the decrease in their motivation for socially significant goals, priorities of professional and personal growth. The article determines significance of shifting existing decisions and initiatives about the career guidance into a practice-oriented, rather than formal. The authors provide some factual information about the insufficiently high level of communicative culture of many teachers, which hinders effective educational work with adolescents and youth, often causing conflicts and provoking a nihilistic attitude of adolescents and youth to the directed educational process. The authors prove the need to abandon the formal attitude of the pedagogical community to educational work, the importance of correcting the priorities of education, applying new ideological incentives, creating a system of psychological and pedagogical support for self-determination and strengthening the aesthetic education of adolescents and young people. The authors render the need to create a fundamentally new psychovaleological direction of educational work with adolescents and young people in the pedagogical process of educational institutions and in a broad socio-pedagogical context.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: To Reveal and describe the distinctive personality traits of today’s adolescents who are active users of social media. Methodology: The major methods employed to explore the researched problem were the interview and testing which allowed revealing and scrutinizing the explored psychological and pedagogical phenomena. Main Findings: It was revealed that today’s adolescents who actively use social media have the proclivity for submission, rejection of responsibility and leadership, describe themselves as being selfish, self-centered, having an inclination towards rivalry and dominance, while their agemates perceive themselves as being friendlier and less inclined to dominance. This paper explains that the active use of social media by the adolescents today is driven by their need for communication, high levels of anxiety and determination to preserve their individuality. Teenagers who actively use social media are sensitive, impulsive, and expressive, have low self-control, maybe confrontational, tend to be self-indulgent and seek benefits in different life situations. The active use of social media is related to a strongly expressed keenness of the teenagers to communicate, while at the same time they have low motivation for spiritual self-fulfilment in the area of public activity. Applications of this study: The applications are that the obtained results may be used in the psychological and pedagogical practice of work with adolescents, their parents, and teachers, as well as for professional training and qualification upgrade of teachers and psychologists. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study is that it allows for a deep psychological analysis of determinants and predictors of problems and difficulties faced by today’s teenagers.
