The purpose of this thesis project was to write a grant proposal to develop and fund a group mentoring program for transitional-aged youth (TAY) ages 16 to 18. The proposed program will be located in Los Angeles, California. The Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) was selected as the host agency for this project. A literature review was conducted to examine topics related to TAY including their challenges and outcomes. The ultimate goal of this proposed project is to increase the independent living skills in the areas of education, employment, and finances for the TAY population. This grant was written for the Ralph M. Parsons Foundations (RMPF). The actual submission or funding of this grant proposal was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

The purpose of this project was to develop and design a residential treatment program for transitional aged youth (TAY) victims of domestic minor sexual trafficking (DMST) in collaboration with Mental Health System’s Ontario TAY program. Additional objectives related to this project include identification of potential funding sources and completion of a grant application. The proposed program aims to meet the needs of TAY victims of DMST by providing shelter and other basic needs as well as by addressing trauma, substance abuse and other effects resulting from their past history of victimization, abuse and neglect. Submission and or funding of this grant was not necessary or required to successfully complete this thesis grant proposal.

Abstract:
This study examines whether or not HIV/AIDS education, socioeconomic status, and/or self-esteem affect the frequency with which African American women between the ages of 18 and 24 participate in risky sexual behavior. HTV is an acronym for the human immunodeficiency virus, which is the virus that leads to AIDS, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. AIDS is one of the most deadly diseases affecting the world today and is the number one killer of African American women between the ages of 18 and 24. HIV/AIDS prevention education has been the major outreach tool used to combat the spread of this disease. However, prevention education does not seem to be impacting this population significantly, which leaves many searching for other answers for outreach. The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not HIV/AIDS prevention education plays a major role in deterring this population from participating in risky sexual behavior or if self-esteem and socioeconomic status are more influential in this population's sexual decision making. A predominantly African American college campus in Atlanta, Georgia provided a sample of 94 African American women between the ages of 18 and 24. Each participant completed a questionnaire regarding their HIV/AIDS prevention education level, their socioeconomic status, and their level of selfesteem. The data collected via the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive, as well as, cross tabulation analysis. A focus group often participants was also convened to explore the responses on the questionnaires more in-depthly. While the findings did not show a significant relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), HIV/AIDS knowledge and risky sexual behavior, there was evidence of a relationship between selfesteem and risky sexual behavior. Implications for measuring SES and self-esteem in this population are discussed.

Adopting the Ecological Contextual Model of Acculturation and Adjustment (Birman, 1994; Trickett, 1996) and the Stress and Coping paradigm (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984, 1986, 1991), the present thesis explored the psycho-social, work, and marital adjustment of 200 established older middle-aged refugees from the Former Yugoslavia living in the Ottawa area. More specifically, three studies were conducted to examine specific stressors and resources of relevance to the adjustment of Former Yugoslavian men and women, across the following three distinct life domains: psycho-social, work, and marital. Study I explored the potential buffering effects of interpersonal trust on the relational growth of Former Yugoslavian refugees. Results demonstrated that interpersonal trust moderated the negative effects of war-related trauma on the relational growth of Former Yugoslavian women. No such buffering effect was found for the men. Study II investigated Former Yugoslavians' work adjustment by exploring the influence of pre-migratory work-related expectations-outcome congruence, occupational mobility, work stress (general and discrimination), as well as personal (education, English language proficiency) and social resources (support at work) on their work satisfaction and distress. Results indicated that different factors emerged as significant predictors of work satisfaction and work distress for Former Yugoslavian men and women. Study III explored the potential moderating role of marital resilience on the relationship between marital stress (general and acculturative) and marital adjustment. Results showed that marital resilience moderated the negative effects of marital stress on the marital adjustment of Former Yugoslavian women. No protective effect of marital resilience was found for the men. Taken together, the results of the three studies provide support for the relevance and importance of studying the stress, resources, and adjustment of refugees across contexts and gender. Given that important gender differences were found in different adaptational domains, the need to study further the impact of gender in refugees is reinforced. The findings are discussed within the current gender and migration literatures as well as the multidimensional theories of cross-cultural adjustment. Theoretical, research, and clinical implications were presented, along with recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
The experiences of sexual intimacy for partnered older people are little researched. This study, situated in a life course perspective on sexuality, purposively sampled data from 11 in-depth interviews and 41 pieces of correspondence from people between the ages of 75-85 in the United Kingdom. The study used Intuitive Inquiry, a method consisting of five “Cycles”; clarification of topic, literature review and description of initial “lenses”, data collection and summaries, integration of the data with literature to produce the final “lenses” and lastly synthesises of the stages of the study to produce a final interpretation. Data were analysed thematically and phenomenologically providing both breadth and depth. The thematic findings recorded observable acts of sexual intimacy and continuums of participant’s thoughts and feelings. The continuums were organised into five meta-themes: the effects of ageing, the nature of relationships, the family context, seeking assistance and the sexual life story. The phenomenological analysis provided “Being Together” as the essence with the constituents; Maintaining intimacy in changing circumstances, Setting current intimacy across a life course, Concern about what people think, The possibility of sexual intimacy and The spectre of death. In addition to the findings the new contributions to the body of knowledge include; a definition of sexual intimacy in older age, the use of intuitive inquiry as a research method within the UK and a greater understanding in researching sensitive topics with older people. The recommendations highlighted a need for increased professional understanding of older age sexual intimacy and practical interventions to preserve sexual intimacy as part of essential holistic care. Further development of the continuums is planned to develop a tool to aid identification of synchronicity or discord between couples as a potential aid to clinical and therapeutic intervention.

AbstractThe first chapter is of introductory character. I set the aims of my analysis which is based on the in-depth interviews about the reconciliation of parenthood and paid work. The book resolves around the narratives of 53 parents of children aged 0–8 years living in Poland. The interviewed parents differ in terms of social and economic backgrounds, family situation (coupled and single parents, divorced parents, reconstituted families) and place of living (countryside, small, medium and large cities). I describe the research sample and methodological choices I made during my fieldwork. These introductory remarks lead to a summary of the main themes of the book: parenting in the context of the organisation of paid work, care work and domestic work, gender and economic inequalities, as well as the role of the welfare state. This chapter ends by looking ahead through summaries of each of the following five chapters.

AbstractsSeveral factors contribute to the alarmingly high youth unemployment rate in South Africa. Barriers such as lack of access to education and practical work experience reflect these statistics and the socio-economic implications of graduate unemployment. This qualitative case study investigated the perceptions of engineering students' academic resilience in the context of higher education by using a youth development approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online via Zoom with a sample consisting of 10 participants (aged 22–28 years), namely four Civil engineering students, four Electrical engineering students, and two Industrial engineering students. Six students were South African, whilst the remaining four were international students. Seven participants self-identified as male and three as female. Findings are discussed in terms of the three themes which emerged from the thematic analysis: (a) personal character strengths; (b) access to guidance, resources, and information and (c) a sense of belonging and social connection. This study focused on engineering education and developed a new interdisciplinary understanding of how entrepreneurship education may contribute to engineering students' academic resilience as a packaged support system that speaks to their psychosocial, educational and economic needs.

The healthcare sector is currently under enormous pressure and the COVID-19 pandemic does not improve this situation. The quality of healthcare will be negatively impacted when this pressure continues in the longer term. In 2050 it is expected that a total of 2.1 billion people will be aged 60+ years old. To overcome the increasing demand for healthcare by this age group, various studies are being conducted into various technological solutions, such as social robots. In this study, the Alpha Mini social robot was used in an experiment to research which tasks a social robot could assist with, to reduce the work pressure of healthcare professionals and to help the elderly live longer at their own homes. The experiment was carried out using interviews with healthcare professionals and informal caregivers about the demonstrated Alpha Mini. In addition to the experiment and interviews a survey was sent out to 237 healthcare organizations in the Netherlands to identify the 1) work pressure, 2) daily tasks, 3) social robot experiences, and 4) the features a social robot should have to gather requirements. The experiment failed due to work pressure at the healthcare organization. The survey resulted in 181 respondents. The results suggest that tasks such as reminders, setting alarms and physiotherapy have a great potential to help the healthcare professional in reducing their work pressure and tasks, and the elderly to be able to stay living longer at their own home.

Abstract:
The rapid economic growth of many companies brings with it the need to pay more attention to issues of management and leadership of people in the conditions of a centralized model of economic management, as well as mental readiness for work and social position in business. Mental balance is one of the most important mental equipment of traders in personal and professional life. Therefore, in the article we assess the necessity of psychohygiene in the work of traders. Its role is to support and create favorable psychological conditions. The aim of the research is to determine the existence of statistically significant differences in the assessment of the attributes of psychohygiene between customers and traders. The research sample, out of the total number of 177 respondents, consists of 125 (70.6%) women and 52 (29.4%) men aged 18 - 70 years, while the average age is 41.08 years, the standard deviation is 7.913 years. Of the total number of respondents, 97 (54.8%) were traders and 80 (45.2%) were customers. The length of the respondents' internship ranged from 1 to 40 years (average 17.25 years, standard deviation 8.679 years). The research results were processed in statistical program IBM SPSS Statistics 22.00 and assessed by t- test for two independent samples. The authors focused on mental health care, proper lifestyle, stressors, work environment and time management.

Abstract:
Social distancing and security measures have contained the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the return to face-to-face activities is necessary for specific companies, and some higher education institutions have already done so. The various disorders that this new reality could generate have motivated the present study, which aims to analyze the emotional state of teachers and administrative staff. The instrument used was the abbreviated depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21) with an internal consistency index of 0.87. The methodology was based on applying a survey to 202 participants from Quito, Ecuador. The sample consisted of 97 men, and 105 women, aged between 23 and 59 years. A quantitative and cross-sectional design was used in this research. The results show that 40.1% of the respondents presented anxiety, 36.63% depression, and 38.61% stress between mild and highly severe categories. Thus, returning to-face-to-face mode has affected the emotional state of many people, showing differences according to the job position, being anxiety as the highest self-identified incidence rate.

Abstract:
According to the World Health Organization, every 40s a person dies of suicide in the world. Among young people aged 15 to 29, suicide is the second largest cause of death. Yet such deaths can be prevented. In this scenario, social networks like Twitter can become sources of information in real time and help in suicide prevention. The present work makes an initial exploration of the problem of identifying individuals at risk of suicide in social networks in Portuguese Language. As a main result, a manually labeled dataset of tweets has been constructed that can be used in future research on the subject.

Abstract: The study was carried out in the areas of studying the criteria of the social efficiency of occupational risk management by: assessing the general and occupational morbidity of workers, researching the quality of life, analyzing the social and hygienic factors of health and assessing the social protection of workers. It was found that the highest incidence rates were found in a group of workers with up to 9 years of experience, which amounted to 42.3 cases, 537.8 days of disability. When managing occupational risk in production for a five-year period, a tendency was determined to reduce the incidence of workers in sick persons by 6.1%, in cases by 4%, in days by 8.2% per 100 year-round workers. When assessing the quality of life of workers, it was found that the values of indicators on the scale "Vital activity" among employees significantly increase with increasing experience, and according to the scale "Mental health" of the psychological component of the quality of life, workers with experience of 0-9 years have significantly higher values compared to the rest of the senior groups. In the study of the criteria of social and hygienic factors of health and social protection of workers, a tendency was established to reduce the subjective assessment of their health by workers with an increase in age and work experience. So social efficiency in terms of subjective assessment of their health workers increased in all seniority and age groups. The greatest growth in the subjective assessment of their health was found among workers aged 30-39 - by 8% (0.4 points on the scale). Thus, the social effect of occupational risk management at chrysotile production is determined in a decrease in the incidence of sickness with temporary disability of employees and in an increase in the criteria for subjective assessments of their health by employees of the enterprise.

ABSTRACT Background: Social economics and environmental factors contribute to low birthweight. Cigarette exposure to tobacco smoke in pregnant women has been discerned as an important risk factor for low birth weight. The purpose of this study was to investigate social economic determinants of birth weight using path analysis model. Subjects and Method: A case control study was carried out at Asembagus community health center, Situbondo, East Java. The study population was children aged 0-1 years. A sample of 150 children with normal birthweight and 50 children with low birth weight was selected randomly. The dependent variable was low bierthweight. The independent variables were maternal age, maternal employment status, family income, maternal knowledge, and cigarette smoke exposure. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by path analysis. Results: The risk of low birthweight was directly and positively associated with maternal age <20 or ≥35 years (b= 1.78; 95% CI= 0.83 to 2.73; p<0.001), low maternal education (<Senior high school) (b= 0.93; 95% CI= 0.00 to 1.86; p= 0.049), mother work outside the home (b= 1.24; 95% CI= 0.26 to 2.22; p= 0.013), low family income low (b= 1.33; 95% CI= 0.42 to 2.24; p= 0.004), low maternal knowledge (b= 1.17; 95% CI= 0.13 to 2.21; p= 0.026), and high cigarette smoke exposure (b= 1.11; CI 95%= 0.08 to 2.13; p= 0.035). The risk of low birthweight was indirectly and positively associated with maternal education, maternal knowledge, and family income. Conclusion: The risk of low birthweight is directly and positively associated with maternal age <20 or ≥35 years, low maternal education (<Senior high school), mother work outside the home, low family income low, low maternal knowledge, and high cigarette smoke exposure. The risk of low birthweight is indirectly and positively associated with maternal education, maternal knowledge, and family income. The currently still active age group (aged 50–64) faces a number of difficulties with the approaching retirement age, as their ability to work and adapt quickly to changing situations are constantly losing their effectiveness. With this, of course, we do not claim that an older worker will carry out his or her work less effectively than a younger worker, as the experience gained in a particular job can balance out the performance differences stemming from age. However, as we approach the retirement age, losing your job at an older age would pose serious challenges for those who would want to return to the group of economically active workers. It is unlikely that they will find a job that matches their qualifications, as their knowledge is less up-to-date and employers would prefer young people who could be relied on in the longer term, as opposed to those who need to be replaced within a few years. These potential difficulties are revealed by the widely distributed questionnaire, which seeks to identify the motivations and preparedness of different social strata for the changing challenges of a precarious age, based on the current economic situation and living conditions of the workers. Results: Through the questionnaire survey, we were able to gain insight into how aging workers are preparing for their approaching retirement years and what steps they can take to preserve their current labour market position, as well as what opportunities they might have for returning to the labour market after losing their jobs as a result of possible redundancies. Conclusion: Due to the aging national age structure, the situation of the aging workers is becoming an increasingly widespread problem, which, if we are not able to remedy in time, then will have to count on the degradation of the employability for the examined group in the near future. This will be mainly due to the constantly deteriorating health status of the individuals and the overwhelmed health care system that needs to provide for all age groups.

The paper attempts to substantiate the possibility of maintaining the efficiency of elderly staff through the formation of a mechanism focused on preventing and overcoming the risks of medical, biological and behavioural nature. The authors give a definition of the mechanism that allows one to maintain the desire and the ability to continue productive activities. The characteristics of success potential of aged staff, that are different from those of other age categories, have been identified. The triad of phases in the vital labour cycle is characterised from relevant medical and biological points of view, organisational requirements as well as individual challenges and needs. The biological component of human life is presented through the markers of its dynamics. The work – private life balance components have been explored. The main reasons of role conflicts substantiating the imbalance of elderly workers’ work and private life have been identified. The risks of weakened competitiveness of elderly workers and reduction of their endurance capacity have been characterised. Some concepts for mitigating the situation of work – private life imbalance through time management, health management and social support have been developed. The influence of medico-biomedical risk factors on retention of elderly employees’ performance has been demonstrated. The reasons causing risks in achieving ageing staff’s success have been grouped, and the subjects initiating these risks have been identified.

The Suzuki Method defines musical abilities as not innate but one that can be developed. It is worth emphasizing that children with autism spectrum disorders could play an instrument from an early age by listening to music, imitating the game's teacher, parent, friend, repeating and perfecting songs. Key question: what is the relationship between using the Suzuki Method and developing communication skills, social competencies, and cognitive skills of students on the autism spectrum? The goal is to design a proprietary model with students in the autism spectrum based on the Suzuki Method for remote work. For the main problem, the independent variable uses the Suzuki Method with autism spectrum students aged 7 to 11. The dependent variable results from the observational technique of student’s communication skills, social competencies, and cognitive skills. An individualization experiment has been undertaken in the case study procedure. These will be case reports during the action research. A child on the autism spectrum disorder has good visual memory, developed match skills, and has the perfect pitch. Presumably, the research goals and indicators are not overestimated during Suzuki's remote lessons, too. Research can significantly accelerate reconstructive inclusion in a child. This study is the latest in a series monitoring the evolution of poverty, based on data gathered by The ESRI in the Living in Ireland Surveys since 1994. These have allowed progress towards achieving the targets set out in the National Anti Poverty Strategy since 1997 to be assessed. The present study provides an updated picture using results from the 2000 round of the Living in Ireland survey. The numbers interviewed in the 2000 Living in Ireland survey were enhanced substantially, to compensate for attrition in the panel survey since it commenced in 1994. Individual interviews were conducted with 8,056 respondents. Relative income poverty lines do not on their own provide a satisfactory measure of exclusion due to lack of resources, but do nonetheless produce important key indicators of medium to long-term background trends. The numbers falling below relative income poverty lines were most often higher in 2000 than in 1997 or 1994. The income gap for those falling below these thresholds also increased. By contrast, the percentage of persons falling below income lines indexed only to prices (rather than average income) since 1994 or 1997 fell sharply, reflecting the pronounced real income growth throughout the distribution between then and 2000. This contrast points to the fundamental factors at work over this highly unusual period: unemployment fell very sharply and substantial real income growth was seen throughout the distribution, including social welfare payments, but these lagged behind income from work and property so social welfare recipients were more likely to fall below thresholds linked to average income. The study shows an increasing probability of falling below key relative income thresholds for single person households, those affected by illness or disability, and for those who are aged 65 or over - many of whom rely on social welfare support. Those in households where the reference person is unemployed still face a relatively high risk of falling below the income thresholds but continue to decline as a proportion of all those below the lines. Women face a higher risk of falling below those lines than men, but this gap was marked among the elderly. The study shows a marked decline in deprivation levels across different household types. As a result consistent poverty, that is the numbers both below relative income poverty lines and experiencing basic deprivation, also declined sharply. Those living in households comprising one adult with children continue to face a particularly high risk of consistent poverty, followed by those in families with two adults and four or more children. The percentage of adults in households below 70 per cent of median income and experiencing basic deprivation was seen to have fallen from 9 per cent in 1997 to about 4 per cent, while the percentage of children in such households fell from 15 per cent to 8 per cent. Women aged 65 or over faced a significantly higher risk of consistent poverty than men of that age. Up to 2000, the set of eight basic deprivation items included in the measure of consistent poverty were unchanged, so it was important to assess whether they were still capturing what would be widely seen as generalised deprivation. Factor analysis suggested that the structuring of deprivation items into the different dimensions has remained remarkably stable over time. Combining low income with the original set of basic deprivation indicators did still appear to identify a set of households experiencing generalised deprivation as a result of prolonged constraints in terms of command over resources, and distinguished from those experiencing other types of deprivation. However, on its own this does not tell the whole story - like purely relative income measures - nor does it necessarily remain the most appropriate set of indicators looking forward. Finally, it is argued that it would now be appropriate to expand the range of monitoring tools to include alternative poverty measures incorporating income and deprivation. Levels of deprivation for some of the items included in the original basic set were so low by 2000 that further progress will be difficult to capture empirically. This represents a remarkable achievement in a short space of time, but poverty is invariably reconstituted in terms of new and emerging social needs in a context of higher societal living standards and expectations. An alternative set of basic deprivation indicators and measure of consistent poverty is presented, which would be more likely to capture key trends over the next number of years. This has implications for the approach adopted in monitoring the National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Monitoring over the period to 2007 should take a broader focus than the consistent poverty measure as constructed to date, with attention also paid to both relative income and to consistent poverty with the amended set of indicators identified here.
