Abstract:

In this study we investigate the impact of the receipt of contributory and social pensions on the labour supply of individuals in Egypt, using individual fixed-effect regressions and panel data from the Egypt Labour Market Panel Surveys in 2006 and 2012. The study compares the effect of social pensions and contributory pensions. We find that the receipt of contributory pensions reduces the probability of working as well as the probability of having a waged job of household members aged from 15. The receipt of social pensions has no significant effect on the probability of working for those aged 15-60. However, receiving social pensions can reduce both working and labour market participation of people aged over 60.

Abstract:

Summary Little is known about the quantity, nature and range of Australian social work research on ageing and aged care. This scoping review involved a comprehensive search of seven online bibliographic databases. The review identified 108 peer-reviewed journal articles, published between January 2007 and June 2014, that reported Australian social work research on ageing and aged care. Findings The average number of authors per paper was 2.10 with most social work researchers co-authoring papers with non-social workers. The main topics of research focus were health and rehabilitation, elder abuse, asset management, community services and caregiving, housing and residential aged care, and ageing with an intellectual disability. The findings highlight the contribution social work researchers make to multidisciplinary gerontological research, and to understanding the lived experiences of older people and the provision of services. However, they also point to the relative paucity of research focusing on direct social work practice with older people, and the little evidence of the participation of older people and carers in the design and delivery of research. Applications The findings indicate the need for capacity-building strategies, such as developing networks of Australian social work researchers on ageing and aged care, to improve research outputs in this area.

Abstract:

The present study analyzed whether one’s work orientation can be organized into work orientation profiles beyond the three pure orientations of job, career, and calling. We tested the existence of these hybrid work orientations in a sample of 959 adults aged from 18 to 71 years old (M = 40.61, SD = 9.54). A cluster analysis showed that the best result consisted of four profiles: “Career-Calling”, “Career-Job”, “Pure Job”, and “Indifference”. Theoretical and practical implications of profile approach to the study of work orientations are discussed at the end.

Abstract:

The importance of leadership is discussed widely in the social work literature. However, little is known about the leadership skills of social work students and factors affecting their development in the environment specific to higher educational institutions (HEIs). This research aimed to find out what skills pre-service social work students had related to leadership and to determine if significant differences existed in terms of such predictor variables as level and form of study, employment status, and involvement in co-curricular activities. The research employed the quantitative approach based on a descriptive cross-sectional survey involving a sample of 158 social work students from three Ukrainian universities. The research group consisted of 88% female and 12% male respondents, aged between 19 and 31. Data were obtained through the Student Leadership Outcomes Inventory, which contained 60 items measuring skills on 8 scales: (a) self-management, (b) interpersonal communication, (c) problem-solving and decision-making, (e) cognitive development and critical analysis, (f) organization and planning, (g) self-confidence, (h) diversity awareness, and (h) technology which served as outcome variables. All items were rated along a 5-point Likert scale, from poor (1) to excellent (5). The results of the research revealed lower than average levels of leadership skills and existing significant differences by outcome variables for the sample population. The findings suggest the need to strengthen the leadership skills of social work students through the implementation of formal and informal developmental activities and recognition of leadership participation within the social work curriculum. Abstract:

The article is devoted to the study of the social psychological peculiarities of workers whose behaviour deviates from the rules and norms set by the legal regulations. More than 1,000 employees of the enterprise aged 25–50 years were surveyed, of whom 400 were identifi ed as «violators» of organisational and production discipline, occupational health and safety, 600 people were classifi ed as law-abiding workers. A set of 3 methods was used, aimed at analysing the social psychological characteristics and studying the interrelations of the multi-level personality characteristics of the employees of the enterprise. Analysis of the results made it possible to describe the social psychological portrait (personal characteristics) of persons with deviating labour behaviour. The following personal predictors of deviating work behaviour were identifi ed: respect, above all, their own interests, rather than group ones; low level of cooperation, a pronounced desire for dominance, a focus on avoiding failures, adaptability to breaking the rules; as well as alexithymia and other characteristics. The results of the research contribute to the optimisation of the management of labour compliance, industrial safety and labour protection of enterprises with high risk environments of production environments.

Abstract:

The main theories predicting children's home responsibilities are sex roles theory and timeavailability theory. This paper reports relevant results from a cross-sectional survey of children ages 10 and 11 in Canada. The strongest predictors of children's home responsibilities were female gender of the child and the number of children aged 0–17 in the household. Home responsibilities also increased when the person most knowledgeable about the child was active in volunteer work, and had more positive interaction with the child. Parents' work status was not related to children's home responsibilities. Sex roles theory is upheld by the results of this study, but time-availability theory is only partially supported.

The study aimed to assess the level of social engagement, opportunities available and encouragement from different stake holder of society for the aged persons. In order to explore, the study targeted retired pensioners from government department across the south Punjab region by focusing all cadres of pensioner’s i.e. Class-IV, Clerical Cadre and Gazatted. The study selected 400 retired pensioners (i.e. 302 male 98 females) from districts Multan, Khenewal, Bahawlpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh of South Punjab, through stratified random sampling technique. The +-study used proportionate sampling technique in order to select true representatives of the population from each selected district. The study used self-constructed Social Engagement Scale for data collection through survey method and face-to-face interview schedule. The study concluded that aged persons deserve dignified life in the society. For this state should device the policies and their implementations as well along with society proactive role for those who had served their potential and still can add for the betterment of society as well. Abstract:

A sample survey of 928 Bostonians, aged sixty years or older, indicates that there are low levels of alcohol consumption: more than half report that they are abstainers; 6 percent indicate that they have two or more drinks daily. Levels of abstinence are particularly high among women, blacks, Jews, widows and widowers, the foreign-born, those with low levels of formal education, and those aged seventy-five years or older. Among social psychological variables, locus of control is most consistently associated with drinking: those who report little influence upon their futures—in terms of work, marriage, income, and leisure activities—are more likely to abstain. There is also an association with optimisim; those who are least optimistic about their prospects for work and leisure activities are most likely to abstain. Analysis of variance shows that gender, education, ethnicity, religion, age, and locus of control regarding work are independent correlates of alcohol use. The data suggest that older people drink mainly in social contexts and to facilitate social interaction.

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to identify the characteristics of social intelligence in children aged 6 to 7 years based on the development and application of appropriate diagnoses. Through methods of comparison, analysis, generalization, the concepts of “social intelligence of children aged 6 to 7 years”, “pedagogical diagnosis of social intelligence aged 6 to 7 years” were developed. Modeling provided the creation of the model of relationship between intelligence and social intelligence, the design made it possible to develop the diagnosis of social intelligence for children aged 6 to 7 years, and experience - its implementation. By the method of finding indicators of generalization, the results of the diagnosis of social intelligence of 110 children were selected. Analysis, interpretation and generalization allowed to identify the characteristics of this diagnosis and the characteristics of the results of its application. The concepts of "social intelligence of children aged 6 to 7 years", "pedagogical diagnoses of children aged 6 to 7 years", a model of the relationship between consciousness and social intelligence, social intelligence diagnoses of older preschoolers were developed. The characteristics of social intelligence of children aged 6 to 7 years and the corresponding diagnostic characteristics are revealed. The results of the study will allow for pedagogical work based on the characteristics.

Abstract:

Between likability and competence, people value likable colleagues (regardless of their competence level) more than competent colleagues. If humility replaces competence, the preference might be different since humility is not always associated with positive outcomes. Humility and competence form four archetypes: humble star, humble fool, competent jerk, and incompetent jerk. This study examined the personal and professional preferences for these archetypes in the workplace and how the preference is moderated by colleagues’ seniority. There were 475 working adults aged between 21 and 77 (M = 40.34, SD = 11.32) recruited to complete an online survey. While humble fools were more likable than competent jerks in personal interactions, competent jerks received more cooperation than humble fools in professional interactions. Seniority did not affect these findings. Our findings shed light on whether, and when, humility should be highly valued in organizational settings. Promoting humility in the workplace setting might require more caution.

Abstract:

This article examines the way that aged care workers and clients are devalued. It is argued that they share a stigmatised and marginalised position, not experiencing recognition at individual, rights or societal levels. The research draws on a qualitative, ethnographic study of aged care and disability support, with Honneth’s recognition theory used to analyse the intersection of practice and meaning in this work. The study reveals that workers’ and clients’ presentations of a competent self are compromised by external signals of mistrust and devaluing, forms of misrecognition. These include low wages and status for workers, public and policy discourses that position them and their clients as mendicant or undeserving, and demeaning treatment from organisations. In turn, those participants who lacked a sense of themselves as uniquely valuable, as deserving of rights, and as contributing to the shared project of society, displayed practices and perspectives that were disabling of themselves and one another. Their interactions were characterised by distrust, resistance and mutual disabling. Boomageddon and silver tsunami scenarios are part of the problem; such discourses of misrecognition must be contested.

Abstract:

Many European families are affected by the 24/7 economy, but relatively little is known about how working parents experience nonstandard hours. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible associations of dual earners’ work schedules and other work-related factors with their experience of time- and strain-based work–family conflict. These phenomena were examined among dual earners living in Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, countries that differ in working time practices and policies. Multigroup structural equation modeling was used to analyze cross-cultural data on dual earners with children aged 0 to 12 years ( N = 1,000). The results showed that working nonstandard schedules was associated with increased time-based work–family conflict, but only among Finnish and British parents. Poorer financial situation, working longer hours, more time spent working at very high speed, and lower work satisfaction were associated with both types of work–family conflict in all countries.

Abstract:

In the UK very young children's experience of ‘work’ (as in adult paid activity) in school is usually restricted to activities which focus on the more concrete manifestations of a task: the police officer arrests, the baker bakes and the nurse takes temperatures. Learning about work as a socially situated activity is usually felt to be too difficult for children aged as young as five years. However, recent studies in childhood and literacy are showing that young children are able to exert agency and understanding in many complex situations. This papers details part of a case study focusing on five-year-olds in which through a series of activities related to sociodramatic play experiences they gained experience of work and bureaucracy, work and community, and work and economic transaction. Instead of finding these too difficult it was clear that the complexity fully engaged the children and that they began to understand that work was not simply a physical activity but was a social phenomenon which involved regulation, community relationships, and economic understanding.

Method: the present paper is a report on an academic experience of 3rd term undergraduate student in Social Work at a workshop with caregivers of the elderly with dementia in an Extension Program of Nursing. It was important to record their experience with the group of the elderly caregiver’s. Results: the Elderly Rights Statute was presented as well as a brief survey of some institutions that provide population with free services. The interdisciplinary relationship between the Social Work student and nursing was an important contribution to develop this paper, which raised the possibility of having undergraduate students broadening their knowledge and world view of life experience of people who depend on health care of public institutions to treat the dementia. Nesta construção foi importante registrar o vivido da discente e os assuntos trabalhados com o grupo de cuidadores de idosos com demência. Resultados: apresentou-se o Estatuto do Idoso e um breve levantamento sobre algumas instituições que prestam serviços gratuitos a esta parcela da população. A articulação interdisciplinar entre a aluna do serviço social e a enfermagem foi um ponto importante no desenvolvimento deste trabalho, criando uma possibilidade de ensino para alunos de graduação ampliando seus conhecimentos e sua visão de mundo sobre a experiência de vida de pessoas que dependem da assistência de saúde pública na atenção às demências. Conclusão: a experiência de integração da bolsista de Serviço Social com a Enfermagem, fortaleceu e trouxe novos conhecimentos, tanto a acadêmica quanto os participantes do grupo de cuidadores. En esta construcción fue importante registrar lo vivido por la estudiante y los asuntos trabajados con el grupo de cuidadores de ancianos con demencia. Resultados: se presentó el Estatuto de las Personas Mayores y una breve reseña de algunas instituciones que ofrecen servicios gratuitos a esta población. La relación interdisciplinaria entre el estudiante de Servicio Social y de Enfermería fue un punto importante en este trabajo, facilitando la enseñanza de los estudiantes de pregrado para que estos amplíen sus conocimientos y su visión de mundo sobre la experiencia de vida de las personas que dependen de la asistencia pública en el cuidado a la demencia. Conclusión: la experiencia de esta integración entre la académica de Servicio Social con la Enfermería fortaleció y trajo nuevos conocimientos, tanto para la académica como para los participantes del grupo de cuidadores. Abstract:

Abstract Previous research demonstrates: 1) men and younger adults have higher negative ageism scores than women and older adults 2) higher scores of negative ageism are associated with lower intention to work with older adults and 3) women and older adults have higher scores for social desirability. It remains unclear how these factors interact. University students (N=547) aged 16 - 59 (Mean = 20.6) completed a survey measuring positive and negative attitudes towards older adults, intention to work with older adults, and social desirability. ANOVAs found a significant effects in negative ageism based on age, F(1, 3) = 6.69, p = 0.01, ω2 = 0.01, and gender, F(1, 3) = 11.43, p = 0.001, ω2 = 0.02, with a small effect size, but no significant interaction between age and gender. Young adults (M = 22.3) and males (M = 21.5) demonstrated more negative ageism than middle aged adults (M = 23.1) and females (M = 22.7) (lower scores indicate negative attitudes). An ANOVA of gender x age x social desirability was also significant for negative ageism, F(11) = 2.00, p = 0.03. However, there were no significant effects or interactions for gender or age on positive ageism and intention to work with older adults, or when social desirability was added. Although there were differences between demographic and social desirability groups for negative ageism, this relationship was not found for positive ageism. We expected social desirability to play a role in ageism, but this was not the case in the current sample.

We quantify the labor supply responses of prime-aged adults to the presence of pensioners in their households, using longitudinal data collected in South Africa. We compare households and individuals before and after pension receipt and pension loss, which allows us to control for a host of unobservable household and individual characteristics that may determine labor market behavior. We find large cash transfers to the elderly lead to increased employment among prime-aged adults, which occurs primarily through labor migration. The pension's impact is attributable to the increase in household resources it represents, which can be used to stake migrants until they become self-sufficient, and to the presence of pensioners who can care for small children, which allows prime-aged adults to look for work elsewhere. In Someday All This Will Be Yours, Hendrik Hartog (2012) examines how private inheritance law structured the strategies people used at the turn of the twentieth century to induce relatives to care for them as they aged. Reading it as a book about social inequality and the family reveals how wealth, gender, and race not only worked to deny claims of marginalized caregivers but also to hide the way these social hierarchies affect family life. Although race does not figure in Hartog's analysis, highlighting its latent presence illustrates the often unspoken yet fundamental role race plays in legal regulation of families.

AbstractWe examine the connection between taxes paid and benefits accrued under the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program on both the intensive and extensive margins. We perform these calculations for stylized workers given the existing benefit structure and disability hazard rates. On the intensive margin, we examine the effect of an additional dollar of earnings on the marginal payroll taxes contributed and future benefits earned. We find that the present discounted value of disability benefits received from an additional dollar of earnings, net of the SSDI payroll tax, generally declines with age, becoming negative around age 40 and reaching almost zero at age 63. On the extensive margin, we determine the effect of working an additional year on the additional payroll taxes and future benefits as a percentage of income. The return to working an additional year at an income level just large enough to earn Social Security credits for the year is large and positive through age 60. However, the return to working an additional full year is substantially smaller and becomes negative at approximately age 57. Thus, older workers face strong incentives to earn enough to obtain creditable coverage through age 60, but they face disincentives for additional earnings. In addition, workers aged 61 and older face work disincentives at any level of earnings. We repeat this analysis for stylized workers at different levels of earnings and find that, while the program transfers resources from high earners to low earners, the workers experience similar patterns in the returns to working.

Future research could explore its findings in the context of multiple organisations, and include the concept of career identity in other low status, “tainted” occupations, such as childcare, in order to develop a more complete understanding of identity construction processes.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest that aged care providers could employ a values-driven approach to recruitment, complementary to pay and career development, to enhance recruitment and retention of aged care employees. Universities and professional bodies could consider more active use of aged care student placements to highlight the opportunities that aged care offer to new graduates in allied health professions.Originality/valueThis paper extends our understanding of career identity in relation to “taint” and “dirty work” in the context of two occupational groups in the understudied sector of aged care.

In a sample of 55 dual-earner families with children aged 8 to 14 in which the mothers are registered nurses regularly working either day shifts (typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) or evening shifts (typically 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.), we estimated the within-couple relationship between the wife's work variables (i.e., work shift, work hours, and the interaction between work shift and work hours) and each spouse's work—family conflict, psychological distress, and marital-role quality. Wives' work variables predicted their own work—family conflict and psychological distress and showed a trend to predict their husbands' work—family conflict.

This study examined communication between 51 transition-aged foster youth and their social workers as related to perceived relationship quality and satisfaction with care receipt/provision. Youth–worker dyads were audio-recorded during a requisite monthly meeting and completed assessments of perceived relationship quality and satisfaction with social services. Communication was rated in a 5-minute excerpt across full audio-recorded speech, verbal transcribed content, and nonverbal content-filtered tone. Findings Ratings of workers’ communication in transcribed content most closely reflected workers’ reported perceptions of their relationship with the youth. In turn, youth’s perceptions of the relationship and satisfaction with care were most strongly linked to the content of workers’ communication. Similarly, youth’s communication in full speech and content most closely reflected their reported perceptions of their relationship with the worker and their satisfaction with care, and workers’ perceptions of the relationship and satisfaction with care were most strongly linked to these channels of youth communication. Applications Findings suggest that foster youth and social workers may communicate their authentic beliefs and expectations differentially by communicative channel. Further, both communication partners appeared selectively attuned to the most authentic speaker channels. These findings can inform case planning and intervention work focused on leveraging the power of the worker–youth relationship to improve key service outcomes for foster youth.

This study extends previous research by Dilworth by examining antecedents of both positive and negative family-to-work spillover—a long-neglected area of research. It also uses an extended definition of domestic labor that includes emotion work and status enhancement. Using data from a random sample of dual-earner couples, the study found gender differences and similarities in the antecedents of family-to-work spillover. For both men and women, family cohesion and emotion-work satisfaction enhanced positive family-to-work spillover. For men, relationship satisfaction was associated with positive family-to-work spillover, whereas satisfaction with the housework arrangement was related to women’s positive spillover. The factors associated with negative family-to-work spillover are different for men and women. For men, satisfaction with the status enhancement they perform in support of their partner’s career was related to decreased negative family-to-work spillover. For women, the presence of preschool-aged children was associated with increased negative family-to-work spillover.

ABSTRACTIn debates about ageing western societies it is often assumed that many middle-aged women struggle to combine paid employment and intergenerational support, and that the subsequent stress leads them to experience an increase in depressive symptoms. Cross-sectional studies have supported this notion, but the question remains whether combining work and intergenerational support actually causes an increase in depressive symptoms. In order to fill a gap in the literature, this study examines the proportion of middle-aged women combining paid work and support to an adult child and/or parent, and the extent to which combining these roles affects women's depressive symptoms over time. For this purpose, we make use of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data set which includes longitudinal data collected on European women aged 50+. Descriptive analyses indicated that 14 per cent of middle-aged women combine the roles of employee, support provider to an adult child, and/or support provider to a parent. Results from semi-dynamic and full-dynamic regression analyses indicate that combining roles can take away some, of the positive mental health effects of fulfilling a role. These findings support the role combination stress hypothesis.

In the light of the social exclusion perspective, this paper discusses the indicators and different forms of social withdrawal experienced by young people in Hong Kong. The study examined the case records of 88 service users aged 13–24, and conducted 4 focus group interviews with a team of social workers involved in outreaching and reengaging the socially excluded users. Youth's personal agency exercised in their reaction to life events and crisis in the form of social withdrawal is arguably a complex social process, which is shaped, amongst other factors, by the hegemonic definition of youth trajectories and transitions to adulthood, and equally important by social exclusion at the institutional, cultural and relational levels. It is argued that both the structural and subjective dimensions of social withdrawal and reengagement work deserve critical examination in order not to further reproduce social inequalities and disadvantages.

Background: Given the documented importance of employment for middle-aged and older adults’ mental health, studies of the association between their number of work hours and depressive symptoms are needed. Objectives: To examine the association between the number of work hours and depressive symptoms in Korean aged 45 and over. Methods: We used data from the first wave to fourth wave of the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging. Using the first wave at baseline, data included 9845 individuals. Depressive symptoms were measured using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale. We performed a longitudinal analysis to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms by work hours. Results: Both unemployed males and females aged 45–65 years were associated with higher depressive symptoms (β = 0.59, p < 0.001; β = 0.32, p < 0.001). Females working ≥ 69 h were associated with higher depressive symptoms compared to those working 41–68 h (β = 0.25, p = 0.013). Among those both middle-aged and older adults, both males and females unemployed were associated with higher depressive symptoms. Those middle-aged female working ≥69 h were associated with higher depressive symptoms. Conclusions: An increase in depressive symptoms was associated with unemployed males and females working ≥69 h compared to those working 41–68 h. Although this association was found among middle-aged individuals, a decrease in depressive symptoms in both sexes was associated with working 1–40 h. Depressive symptoms should decrease by implementing employment policies and social services to encourage employers to support middle-aged and older adults in the workforce considering their sex and age differences.

The University of Newcastle offers a tertiary preparation program that enables mature aged students to gain access to higher education. One of the largest intakes is into the pre-nursing program. This paper will share the findings of a 2-year study of tertiary preparation students undertaking group work within their pre-nursing program. For many mature-aged students returning to study, it requires the development and transition of their identity from that of an adult role to that of a student role. The aim of this study was to examine how group work can help support mature aged students in their transition to a student identity. The premise was to enable students to develop skills for success in their undergraduatenursing studies, whilst fostering social connection and a sense of belonging in the university. We identified an essential aspect of nursing as being able to work collaboratively with other nurses and within allied health teams. Keeping this in mind, we developed and delivered an approach that introduced group work in Week 3 of the students' program to enable them to effectively integrate curricula and co-curricular learning experiences. Using an online assessment tool called SPARK, students were each asked to self-reflect upon their individual role and their role within the group according to specific criteria that promoted positive group work behaviours and fostered social connection. It was hoped that by providing students with resources and evaluation tools they would develop group work and self-reflection skills to succeed in their studies and future profession.
