Sung, Johnny. "The developmental worker : social engineering and worker participation." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/29344.

Full text
Abstract:
There are four broad aims in this thesis. Firstly, I explore how the developmental state achieves its developmental objectives through collaborative effort with the workers. Secondly, within this context, I examine the significance of the practice of social engineering and nation building, and how social engineering and national building form an integral part of Singapore's economic growth process. These analyses give rise to new perspective in examining the growth process in Singapore - i.e. the 'developmental worker' model. The third aim of this thesis is therefore to establish the theoretical content of the developmental work model. The fourth aim of the thesis is to employ both qualitative and quantitative data to substantiate the developmental worker model in Singapore. The contributions of the developmental worker model are two-fold. Firstly, to my best knowledge, it is the first attempt of its kind to incorporate a workers' perspective into the analysis of the gwoth experience in Singapore. By creating a complementary concept (i.e. the developmental worker model) for the developmental state mode, the thesis makes the developmental state model analytically more 'complete'. Secondly, through the developmental worker model, the thesis also represents the first attempt to examine the empirical content of the workers' interpretative understanding process and the collective beliefs of Singapore workers. The combined effects of these two empirical elements lead to the ultimate social actions on the part of the workers, i.e. a collaborative effort between the state and workers to achieve the 'economic miracle' in Singapore.

Asano, Takahiro. "Professional learning as a way of being a social worker : post-qualifying learning among Japanese social workers." Thesis, University of York, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11499/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined how the experienced social workers continued to learn as professionals in the context of Japanese social work. The findings have suggested that the challenges and struggles they confronted were closely related to their professional ways of being. We cannot understand their learning unless we set each person’s learning experiences in the context of their way of being a social worker. They saw their learning as something about changes in their understanding in varying ways. Though those perspective changes in learning varied widely depending on their learning situation, three components of professional learning have been identified: Experience; Opportunity; and Reflection. Experience describes how professional learning involves the interconnection of cumulative background experiences they had, which can include both within their professional work and outside. What counts as a learning Opportunity can vary considerably according to them. It makes good sense to treat learning opportunities not as a distinct one but as a unified entity. Reflection involves them seeing practice from different perspectives, in that their taken-for-granted assumption is challenged, which may lead to new possibilities that can make their practice different in their working context. These three components are not entirely distinct from each other, but inextricably interwoven. The findings reveal that there is the significant gap between what the social workers value in learning and what is expected from their organizations, professional associations, and universities in today’s uncertain working environments, in which they are required to ensure increased professional accountability for their performance with measurable standards. In the gap, voices of social workers have been underrepresented in the discourse of professional development. To share awareness of diverse and complex learning as experienced by social workers can be a first step in making a difference to professional learning in the context of Japanese social work.

Solly, Chris. "Social worker decision making and parental responsibility." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29374.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sets out to explore the way that child care social workers make decisions about interventions in families, and in particular about the ways that they apply the concepts of parent responsibility, or working together with parents, and of social work duties. It begins with a discussion of recent legislation, government guidance and reports, some other research studies, and current controversies in the field. The study is conducted by means of loosely structured interviews with 40 local authority workers, at the point where they are having to recommend a course of action to children’s hearings and to child protection case conferences. These workers define their social work problems in terms of layers of contexts. They almost invariably explain both the condition and the behaviour of children in the context of the attitude and behaviour of their parents towards them. In doing so they transcend the grounds of referral and the conventional case type categories. In the same way, they try to place the behaviour of parents in the context both of their personal limitations and of their life experiences. Despite this the social workers reveal strong value positions, particularly about the overriding importance of emotional care, that parents are responsible for their behaviour towards their children, and that the explanatory context, though it may constrain their actions, does not absolve them of responsibility for them. They are less likely to work in a supportive or consensual way with parents whose behaviour is seen as part of a pattern or habit of life rather than to be explained by their emotional condition or overwhelming life experiences. The latter are conceived as victims as well as the child. They are also less likely to do so with those who don’t share their moral and cognitive understanding of the problem, or show commitment to dealing with it, or with those who show persistent hostility and condemnation towards their children, or where the child’s condition is regarded as severe. Severity is a dimension of poor emotional care as well as physical.

Howard, Latasha Eleanor. "SOCIAL WORKER AWARNESS OF SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/204.

Full text
Abstract:
Sex-trafficking has been known as an international crime of violence against women and children. Social work professionals unknowingly encounter sex trafficking victims among their clients for potential identification and intervention. In a crisis setting, social workers play a fundamental role in assessing and providing treatment services to the victims of sex-trafficking that range in age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Victim identification presents a challenge for social workers because victims are a part of a hidden population. Although the sex-trafficked individuals can be reported to authorities if identified, attention needs to be focused as to how social worker professionals identify the sex-trafficking victims they may potentially to encounter.

Woolen, Melanie. "SOCIAL WORKER PERCEPTIONS OF EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/485.

Full text
Abstract:
This research study examines factors that influence a social worker’s willingness to utilize animals in therapy, specifically equine assisted psychotherapy. Equine assisted psychotherapy is an experiential therapy involving horses for the treatment of mental and behavioral health issues. The study uses quantitative data. The sample population is Bachelors of Social Work (BSW) and Masters of Social Work (MSW) students attending a University in Southern California. The participants were provided an electronic self-administered survey through their University email account. The data collected was analyzed and the results were provided to the University. The results indicate a relationship between several variables, such as previously owning and/or caring for a pet and fondness of animals, however, there are likely other factors that predict the use of equine assisted therapy that were not explored in this study. The results of this study will help raise awareness about equine assisted psychotherapy and the benefits of utilizing this non-traditional treatment.

Nyereyemhuka, Christie Tamuka. "Measuring progress towards developmental social welfare: social worker perceptions and experiences." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/8003.

Abstract:
The introduction of a new policy and approach to South Africa’s welfare system saw a shift in focus and advancement made towards, the redress of past socio-economic imbalances which was brought on by apartheid laws and legislations which deliberately discriminated against South Africa’s majority groups. Within this new welfare system, came the introduction of The White Paper for Social Development (1997) which advances Developmental Social Welfare as the new approach to social welfare in South Africa. The body of literature around this approach focuses on transformation of welfare services since the adaptation of the new developmental welfare policy in 1997. Amongst scholars there is consensus on the need to continuously explore and to make an analysis of the transformation process advocated by this new approach. Interests in recent times suggest the need to bench mark the transformation process against a set of indicators. This and the study of available literature resulted in this qualitative, exploratory-descriptive and contextual research study with the following goal: To contribute to the proposed evaluation of the implementation of the developmental social welfare approach by measuring progress towards developmental social welfare through social workers’ perceptions and experiences. On the backdrop of the research goal a qualitative research approach was used. A purposive sampling method was used to draw participants from two Non-governmental organisations in Pretoria. Data was collected by means of two focus group interviews and two individual interviews which were tape recorded for data analysis. All the interviews were transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was done using Tesch’s model for data analysis and the findings were displayed in the form of themes subthemes and categories. Data verification occurred in reference to Guba’s model for trustworthiness. The researcher then drew conclusions from this analysis of data and used literature control to discuss the findings. Through these processes this research presents findings in relation to social workers perceptions of the concept of developmental social welfare, their perception on the implementation progress of the developmental social welfare approach, perceptions on Indicators of developmental social work and social welfare and in relation to the principles of the proposed framework by Patel and Hochfeld (2008).

Finnerty, Karen Christine. "Professional identity and the Irish social care worker." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/10922.

Full text
Abstract:
Social care work in Ireland was designated as a regulated profession in 2005, a change in status that led to an increase in the number of unqualified staff registering for degree level professional education. The formation and expression of professional identity among final year in-service social care degree students in the disability sector was explored through a hermeneutic phenomenological approach focused on lived experience, utilising semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The study found evidence of an emerging professional identity, which could be described from the perspective of changes in respondents’ values, behaviour and self-concept. Respondents’ values were highly consistent with new professionalism, its emphasis on the service user-service provider relationship and issues of trust, empowerment and quality of service; and they operationalised these values through the deliberate promotion of service user independence, autonomy and self-determination. A change in respondents’ self-concept was evidenced in an enhanced sense of competence and an increase in the confidence they brought to their daily work and interactions with colleagues and other professionals. They also demonstrated very high levels of employee engagement and revealed a need for emotion management skills in their everyday work, and it is suggested that these aspects of the role need to be addressed by educators and employers. The research identifies a range of influences on the development of social care workers’ professional identity, including: pre-career life experiences; workplace influences including role models and other professionals; personal motivation for enhanced status and the influence of the programme of professional education. Each of the influencing factors can be positively utilised by educators in assisting students to develop a robust values oriented professional identity.

Abstract:
Child welfare social workers are excellent advocates for children in the foster care system. These children can greatly benefit from long lasting relationships as well as long term supportive relationships such as that of a social worker. The researcher took on a positivist approach with an aim to answer the research question “Do factors such as supervision, peer support, and organizational factors have a positive impact on social worker retention at a child welfare agency?” The research site was a foster family agency (FFA) located in the Southern California Inland Empire region. A self-administered survey was provided to participants. The findings demonstrated a strong positive relationship between variables such as supervision and peer support.

Omelczuk, Suzie. "Youth worker perceptions of abused young women." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1992. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1137.

Full text
Abstract:
Youth workers across Australia are coming into contact with young women who have been abused. However, the nature of that contact, and the ways in which youth workers are responding to these young women is not known. The aim of this study is to determine how youth workers in the metropolitan area of Perth perceive and act upon issues of abuse faced by the young women using their services. The study draws upon literature dealing with issues of abuse facing children and young people. Within the study issues such as problems arising from trying to define abuse are examined, as are the theories used by practitioners to describe and explain why abuse occurs within our society. Feminist theories of abuse and work with young women are offered as the basic framework of the study. The technique of gathering data is also set within a feminist framework, involving 15 youth workers in a process of discussion and debate on issues surrounding young women and abuse and youth work practice with young women. The study found that youth workers are prepared to support young women who have been abused, but that this support - varies according to the consciousness, skills, confidence anti experience of individual workers. The focus of service provision in the majority of casas lies with young man, so the needs of abused young woman using youth services are often not seen as a priority. Constraints of a work nature also impact strongly on the amount of time and energy that youth workers are able to give the young women with whom they have contact.

Abstract:
This thesis examines directly the development of Catholic social teaching in respect of the rights and duties of the worker. Beginning with the Old Testament, the thesis compares the attitude of the Hebrew people as expressed in Scripture to those who performed the tasks associated with the crafts or with labour. This shows how the attitude of the Hebrews to workers, in comparison with the attitude of surrounding peoples, was ameliorated by their belief in a just God who spoke to them in Scripture and through the prophets. In its examination of the New Testament, the thesis extracts gospel references to the worker and extracts from the Epistles, particularly from the Pauline texts, on the subject. The changes in attitude to the worker as expressed in the New and Old Testaments are noted. Next examined are the writings of the Church Fathers and their application to the worker. It can be seen from this examination that the early Church Fathers, whilst not directly developing a body of teaching in respect of the worker, developed a philosophical platform for its later development. It will be shown how the teachings of the Church Fathers, in their application of teaching of Jesus in the Gospels to the prevailing attitudes of Roman society contributed to the further amelioration of the condition of slaves in the later Empire. When speaking of the worker in Greco-Roman society, one is in effect speaking about the institution of slavery. The thesis then discusses the further changes in attitude to the worker that followed the decline of imperial authority in the west. It examines the role of the Church and its teaching regarding the dignity of the human person and the place of work in the scheme of redemption, and how it had an ameliorating effect on the treatment of slaves in the various Barbarian kingdoms which arose in the west following the extinguishing of Roman authority. The thesis argues that it was the influence of Christianity which ultimately led to the evolution of the condition of slavery as it was known in the Roman Empire and Carolingian period, to that of the serfdom of the Middle Ages. Next discussed is the 'Guild System' of regulating and controlling the crafts. The Guilds were a society, in part co-operative but mainly composed of private owners of capital whose corporation was self governing, and was designed to check competition between its members in order to prevent the growth of one at the expense of the other. The thesis examines how the Guilds functioned and explains why some Catholic writers such as Hilaire Belloc and Gilbert Keith Chesterton regarded the Guilds as an excellent example of the practical application of Christian principles to work and economics. The thesis then examines the effects of the Reformation and the rise of liberal capitalism from the Guild system and how they both contributed to its decline. Following the decline of the Guild system and the onset of liberal capitalism, society came to be divided into two classes, the capitalist class, and the proletariat. This thesis examines how this development occurred and the factors which contributed to it. It shows how the division of society into capitalist and proletariat, haves and have-nots, resulted in the development of a class war and the antagonism between capital and labour. The thesis shows how under the liberal capitalist system, the conditions of the working class came to resemble in the words of Leo XIII, 'a yoke, almost of slavery'. Next developed and analysed is the manner in which the antinomy between capital and labour gave birth to the philosophy of Marxism in 1848 following the publication of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels. It shows how the development of these two antagonistic classes was viewed by the Church as an aberration or distortion of the social order and how in response to the rise of the philosophy of Marxism, Leo XIII countered with his great social encyclical Rerum Novarum, promulgated on the 15th May 1891, which was to earn him the title of 'The Workers' Pope'. The thesis then deals sequentially with the social teachings and encyclicals of Popes Pius XI, Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II. All of these Popes, in some way, expanded upon and developed the social teaching of the Church regarding the workers. In many ways it could be said that the later encyclicals have 'fleshed out' Rerum Novarum. During this period, numerous advances have been made in the fields of technology and there has been a considerable improvement in the conditions and wages of workers. In its consideration of the social encyclicals since Rerum Novarum, this thesis discusses the way in which the Popes have developed and expanded Catholic social teaching in respect of the workers as changes in technology and various structural changes to the financial system threw up new and complex challenges to the creation of a just social order in which the dignity and the rights of workers are fully respected. It is shown how the Popes since Leo XIII have confronted the injustices associated with these developments and detailed recommendations for action, some of which would be viewed by many as quite radical. Later in this thesis deleterious effects upon the rights of workers of global neo-liberal capitalism are identified. It is demonstrated that in the early years of the twenty-first century, there are already signs that some of the less desirable traits of laissez faire or liberal capitalism, are once again rearing their heads. This is seen in such developments as the 'hollowing out' of the middle class and the concentration of wealth in fewer hands. It is also seen in the slow but sure erosion of the working conditions of workers and in their level of remuneration. It is seen in developed countries, in the trend towards longer working hours and the increasing casualisation of the workforce. This thesis shows that in the context of the world economy, a gap continues to widen between the developed and undeveloped nations, whilst inequitable trade agreements tend to confine the developing nations to the status of providers of raw materials to the industrialised world, an inequity, which, more often than not finds itself imposed upon the working men and women of the developing nations in the form of long hours, low wages and poor conditions. It is a tenet of this thesis that the social teaching of the Church directly the challenges and confronts the philosophy of neo-liberal capitalism and its associated philosophy of globalism in respect of the attaining of a just distribution of the world's goods, the dignity of work and the mutual dependence of capital and labour.

Abstract:
Transracial adoption continues to be a widely debated and controversial subject matter. The purpose of this study was to complete an examination of what adoption social workers do to teach adoptive parents regarding their adoptees' differing cultural and ethnic background. A questionnaire was sent to all adoption social workers employed by Children's Aid Societies in Ontario; 90 responded. The questionnaire included questions regarding demographic information, opinions of transracial adoption and also explored the actual actions taken to teach adoptive parents about their adoptees' differing cultural and ethnic background. Findings were that the majority of adoption social workers in Ontario are Caucasian, and that they have a high level of agreement with the appropriateness of transracial adoptions. The total actions taken by social workers to educate adoptive parents were found to be quite low; a higher number of actions taken was associated with: (1) The social workers being older; (2) The fact that they adopted transracially themselves; (3) Longer experience in social work, and specifically in adoption; (4) More transracial adoptions facilitated.

Abstract:
This study explores the role of exercise and nutrition in burnout rates of social workers. Through convenience and snowball sampling 100 workers were asked to complete a questionnaire, with 82 returned. Burnout was assessed on three subscales, Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP) and Personal Accomplishment (PA), using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The exercise questions were adapted from Canada's Physical Activity Guide of Healthy Living. The nutrition questions were adapted from Healthy Eating Worksheet from the Canadian Cancer Society. Those employed in child welfare had significantly higher levels of EE and DP and significantly lower levels of PA. Results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that higher exercise scores were significantly related to lower levels of EE. Higher nutrition scores were significantly related to lower levels of EE, and DP, and higher levels of PA. These effects were found even when setting was controlled for.

Cetina-Garcia, Diana. "SOCIAL WORKER PERSPECTIVES ON WORKING WITH THE INCARCERATED POPULATION." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/828.

Full text
Abstract:
The study aimed at obtaining perspectives of social workers in working with the incarcerated population. Being that the incarcerated population may carry a stigma due to the crimes that they allegedly committed or have been convicted of committing, it comes to question if workers in the helping professions, such as social workers, that may be involved in the inmate’s rehabilitation process have any biases in working with this population. Participants in the study included members from the National Association of Social Workers California chapter (NASW CA). NASW CA was chosen as the most appropriate entity through which to gather perspectives of social workers with varying demographics. The study was comprised of a survey emailed out to NASW CA members from a list generated by NASW CA, and the data was collected on the Qualtrics application. The eight main survey questions consisted of statements that are rated using a 5-point Likert scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The data was analyzed in the IBM SPSS v25 program. Participant demographics, including gender, ethnicity, age, years in field, and area of social work practice were also captured. The data was analyzed using descriptive and bivariate comparisons between specific participant demographics -such as gender (male/female) and ethnicity (white/non-white)- regarding their perspectives toward inmates. The survey was completed anonymously; termination was completed during the debriefing statement. There were 45 participants in the study. Participant demographics include: 1) 82% female and 18% male; 2) 42% identified as non-white and 58% as white; 3) 40% have worked in the social work field for 0-10 years and 60% have been in the field for more than 10 years; 4) 56% were between the ages of 18-45 and 44% were above 45 years old; 5) 40% have experience working in Child Welfare while the other 60% do not; and 6) 47% have direct experience working with inmates while 53% do not. Bivariate analyses revealed four statistically significant differences between specific demographic groups, including: 1) participants who do not have experience working in child welfare are more likely than those who do have experience to feel like they are putting themselves in danger by working with inmates; 2) participants who have 0-10 years’ experience in the field are more likely than those with more than 10 years’ experience to feel like they are putting themselves in danger by working with inmates; 3) participants who indicated an age above 45 years old are more likely than those under 45 years old to think that inmates have rights and should have access to services; and 4) participants who indicated having direct experience working with inmates were more likely to feel comfortable working with inmates than participants who do not have direct experience. There are implications for micro and macro social work practice, which include exposure to this population while in a social work program and further training in cultural competency to reduce bias toward this population and ensure full and equal access to social work services.

Snyman, Felicia. "Social protection for the migrant worker in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40609.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the social protection, if any, afforded to migrant workers in South Africa. To accomplish this purpose, the ambit of the concept of ‘social protection’ is investigated and the legal status and different categories of migrant workers are probed. The strands of social protection identified and evaluated in the study are: • social assistance; • social insurance; and • labour security. Each of the categories that define the social protection afforded to migrant workers is examined. The ILO, UN and SADC have numerous standards and instruments dedicated to the extension of social protection as well as the protection of migrant workers globally. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, acknowledges that international law must be considered when interpreting the Bill of Rights. Furthermore, the courts must prefer a reasonable interpretation of legislation, consistent with international law. Each component of social protection, as well as migration, is regulated by different legislative instruments. South Africa has legislative instruments dedicated to the regulation of social assistance, social insurance and labour security. In South Africa, irregular migrants receive limited social protection. The South African courts have played a positive role in the development and broadening of the social protection afforded to migrant workers, especially in the form of labour security. The limitations in the legislative instruments that regulate labour security are being extended to give effect to the courts’ decisions. Most of South Africa’s neighbouring countries have some form of social protection, but other SADC countries can receive lessons from South Africa with regard to the development of social protection, specifically in the form of labour security.

Turner, Gillian. "Abusive supervision : subordinate versus co-worker perceptions." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/62687.

Full text
Abstract:
Research purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the extent to which supervisors are universally perceived as abusive across those they supervise. I propose social learning theory and social information processing theory as theoretical bases for understanding collective impression formation among subordinates reporting to the same supervisor. The study, therefore builds on a growing body of abusive supervision literature by analysing intraclass correlations between subordinates' and their co-workers' perceptions of the same supervisor. Research motivation: Studies that examine whether or not subordinates of the same supervisor have similar perceptions of abuse are in short supply. Therefore, this study examines the possibility of objective impression formation with regards to abusive supervision so as to answer the question: Do subordinates and their co-workers mutually perceive the extent to which a supervisor's behaviour is abusive? Research design, approach and method: This study follows a cross-sectional approach to investigate the extent to which subordinates of the same workgroup mutually perceive their supervisor's behaviour as abusive. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit full-time employed Master's of Business Administration (MBA) students from six respected universities in the United States (US). Purposive sampling was further aided by snowball sampling where each subordinate was asked to get two of their own co-workers involved in the study. A total of 1,029 surveys were distributed and 693 completed surveys were returned. The final sample consisted of 210 sets of surveys where responses were received from the focal subordinate and two of his or her co-workers. An intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis was conducted to determine the strength of intra-group agreement regarding abusive supervision perceptions. Main findings: The results indicate that there is agreement between subordinates' and their co-workers' perceptions of abusive supervision as no significant differences were found between these two groups' assessments of the same supervisor's behaviour. The null hypothesis was accepted. A non-hypothesized finding is that dyadic tenure appears to influence the extent to which supervisory abuse is observed. That is, subordinates and their co-workers may view the same supervisor in the same light, the longer the duration of the supervisor-subordinate relationship. Limitations: The results should be interpreted, bearing in mind that there is limited literature available on abusive supervision at the group level. Furthermore, the results should be considered with caution as the perceptions of abusive supervision were only examined at one point in time, the use of snowball sampling method may be associated with the possibility of sampling bias, and that dyadic tenure was measured with a categorical response (i.e., not treated as a continuous variable). Finally, the results may not be generalisable to the South African context. Future research: It is suggested that future studies should investigate abusive supervision as a group-level phenomenon as few such studies currently exist. Additionally, future studies should examine the extent to which social learning and social information processing approaches contribute to the establishment of mutual perceptions about supervisory abuse. Researchers may also investigate the occurrence of abusive supervision at the group level through the lens of an alternative theoretical framework such as social identity theory.

Abstract:
Children with chronic illnesses have a doubled risk of developing psychosocial maladjustment--emotional problems, behavior disorder or difficulties in social relationships. Social work support and counselling aims to reduce this secondary morbidity, and is a common form of hospital-based psychosocial service. The first randomized controlled trial of this type of intervention was carried out to evaluate its effectiveness in treating and preventing maladjustment. This thesis describes how child behavior outcomes were assessed before and 4 months after a 6 month period of social worker assistance in 173 children randomized to intervention, and in 169 controls, all with chronic illnesses.
No significant difference between intervention and control groups in the overall prevalence of maladjustment was found. There was no evidence to support a therapeutic or preventive effect of social work counselling on child behavior outcomes, nor was there improvement in child perceived competence. A search for treatment interactions failed to reveal any sub-group that benefitted from the intervention, and restriction of the analysis to individuals who actually received the intervention does not alter any of these conclusions.
Measurement problems, co-intervention, or other forms of bias cannot account for the negative results. It is speculated that if social work support is to be effective, it should be targetted, potent, of adequate duration, and possibly integrated within specialist clinic services.

Abstract:
This paper uses peace and conflict theory to analyse the migrant worker issue in the Gulf States, focusing on Indian construction workers in the emirate of Dubai. Peace and conflict theory is found to provide a missing perspective on the question, which is best understood in an interdisciplinary frame-work combined with for example migration and development theory. Migrant workers’ vulnerability in the global free market is described and the modern economic history of the Gulf region is discussed to explain today’s unique labour situation. Different regional and local parties to the conflict are identified to distinguish guiding interests and their impact on the conflict. Put in an international perspective, the same conflict mechanisms found in the Gulf are detected globally. They reveal widespread practises of structural and cultural violence that can only be contested by a vibrant global civil society guided by truly cosmopolitan values.

Abstract:
The stigmatization of people with mental illness is present in all facets of modern society. Many studies have shown that even mental workers trained to work with this vulnerable population held stigmatizing attitudes about mental illness and people with mental illness. This study: (1) examined if the functioning of graduates from mental health agencies was impacted by the attitudes of workers. (2) Compared the attitudes of the mental health professionals of four local agency settings to the US general population. (3) Examined the relationship between worker attitudes and stated agency policies. (4) Examined the relationship between the levels of stigma and the personal characteristics of the mental health professionals. Two standardized instruments were used: for graduates the Independent Living Skills Survey (ILSS), for workers two vignettes from the MacArthur Mental Health Module. A total of 41 workers were recruited from four mental health residential services. These workers were found to have significantly less stigmatizing attitudes about mental illness than the general public. For some items females reported less stigmatizing views than males, and university graduates had less stigmatizing views than non graduates. This suggests that hiring workers with university degrees should be considered, and providing training for workers about issues related to mental illness should be encouraged

""Om de beskriver att de är ledsna då kan jag skicka en ledsen emoji, senare glada emojis för att vi också ska bli glada" : Relationsskapande bland fältarbetare och ungdomar på digitala plattformar." Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate field workers' own experiences of relationship building between them and young people on the internet and social media. Eight semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with social field workers from the social services who work with young people on the internet and social media. The collection of empirics has been processed on the basis of hermeneutic tradition and has subsequently been analyzed through the theory of symbolic interactionism. The results show that social field workers use information dissemination, activities and a simplified language on digital platforms as different approaches to create relationships with young people online. The professional’s experience that the benefit of digital field work is that relationship building is not only limited to physical environments. The Internet enables anonymous meetings and for young people to share experiences that they otherwise do not dare to talk about. Social field workers can in their communication use symbols such as emojis to replace the loss of body language, gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. Challenges that they experience in relationship building are about negative aspects of anonymous meetings and emoji usage, as well as about the legal context of this platform. Anonymous meetings also contribute to social field workers not being able to physically intervene in the event of concerns about young people as they have the opportunity to mask their identity. The professionals feel that emojis can inhibit the establishment of relationships with young people if the young people perceive the tool as inappropriate. Laws regarding social fieldwork online are a significant challenge for the professionals because they experience that they cannot interact with them in ways they want. Finally, the results suggest that face-to-face interaction is of great importance when field workers try to create relationships with young people on digital platforms. This indicates that digital establishments of relationships are more used as a complement to the relationships that are created in physical environments.

Pollard, Lee W. "Social worker experience of fatal child abuse : an interpretive phenomenological analysis." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2014. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20784/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project is an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of the lived experiences of four social work practitioners who have been directly involved in cases of fatal child abuse. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, detailed narrative and hermeneutic analysis, the research examines how the tragedies impacted upon the workers in both personal and professional capacities and locates those experiences within the relevant organisational context. Within the research, the workers recount their experiences relating to such issues as the support and supervision they received following the children's deaths, their experiences of the review process and the short and longer term impact of the deaths upon their social work practice and their personal relationships. Analysis of the workers' accounts reveals that all were significantly affected in different ways by the tragedies; however their emotional and support needs were largely ignored by the organisations in which they practiced. Although there are some examples of good practice, it is apparent that on a number of occasions the needs of the organisation were prioritised above the individual needs of the participants. The study reveals that following the children's deaths, the support and supervision the social workers received was often inappropriate and inconsistent and the serious case reviews that were undertaken further contributed to the isolation and blame already being experienced by the workers involved. The theoretical analysis within the study relates the workers experiences to Doka's (2002) typology of disenfranchised grief, Nagel's (1979) concept of "moral luck" and also Hawkins and Shohet's (1989) model of effective supervision. The study introduces a new concept developed by the author. Termed the "personification of systemic failure", this concept highlights how such factors as media responses, organisational culture, working practices and the serious case review system, combine to provide a means by which systemic failures are minimised and ignored infavour of attributing blame to the actions or inaction of individual social work practitioners. The penultimate section of the study contains a detailed discussion of the research findings and also makes a number of recommendations for future research and practice initiatives in the area of fatal child abuse. The paper is concluded by a personal, reflective account of the "research journey" undertaken by the author during the study.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I examine how information, information technology, and social networks affect information worker productivity. The work is divided into three essays based on tracking detailed communication patterns of information workers in the high-tech industry. Essay 1: "Social Network Effects on Performance and Layoffs: Evidence from the Adoption of a Social Networking Tool." By studying the changes in employees' networks and performance before and after the introduction of a social networking tool, I find that a structurally diverse network (low in cohesion and rich in structural holes) has a positive effect on work performance. The size of the effect is smaller than traditional estimates, suggesting that omitted individual characteristics may bias the estimated network effect. I consider two intermediate mechanisms by which a structurally diverse network is theorized to improve work performance, information diversity (instrumental) and social communication (expressive), and quantify their effects on two types of work outcomes: billable revenue and layoffs. Analysis shows that the information diversity derived from a structurally diverse network is more correlated with generating billable revenue than is social communication. However, the opposite is true for layoffs. Friendship, as approximated by social communication, is more correlated with reduced layoff risks than is information diversity. Field interviews suggest that friends can serve as advocates in critical situations, ensuring that favorable information is distributed to decision makers. This, in turn, suggests that having a structurally diverse network can drive both work performance and job security, but that there is a tradeoff between either mobilizing friendship or gathering diverse information. Essay 2: "Identification of Influence: An Experimental Platform for Understanding the Relationship between Social Networks and Performance." This study creates an experimental platform for identifying the relationship between social networks and performance. While a large body of literature has examined the correlations between certain network topologies and performance, little research has shown a definitive causal linkage. I address this problem through conducting three sets of randomized field experiments using an on-line experimental platform at a large information technology firm. The platform enables randomly selected employees to achieve certain network characteristics. By examining work performance before and after the experiment, I plan to show the causal relationship between networks and productivity. Essay 3: "Water Cooler Networks: Performance Implications of Informal Face-to-Face Interaction Structures in Information-Intensive Work." This study examines the performance characteristics of face-to-face interaction networks and finds that their structural properties are important for effective knowledge transfer and productivity. We argue that network theory should incorporate the implications of media choice, and particularly differences between face-to- face and electronic communication, when assessing how networks affect individual performance. We introduce a new methodology, using Sociometric badges, to record precise data on face-to-face interaction networks for a group of workers in a large IT manufacturing firm over a one-month period. Linking these data to detailed performance metrics, we find that 1) network cohesion is associated with higher worker productivity, in contrast to previous findings in email data; 2) cohesion in face-to-face networks is associated with even higher performance during complex tasks, suggesting that cohesion complements information-rich media for transferring the complex knowledge needed to complete such tasks; 3) while information-seeking from many colleagues creates disruptions, more interactions with a few key strong-tie informants speeds up work. Face-to-face networks have more explanatory power than physical-proximity networks, suggesting that information flows in actual conversations (rather than individuals' correlated exposure to common environmental factors through physical proximity) are driving our results. These results augment our understanding of how media choice and network structure interact, shedding light on the organizational effects of face-to-face interaction. The methods and techniques we introduce are replicable, creating opportunities for new lines of research into the consequences of face-to-face interaction in organizations.

Abstract:

A theory-based evaluation has been conducted with an improvement-orientated purpose on the Social Auxiliary Worker (SAW) Training Programme for an accredited provider to improve and continue to implement their own SAW Training Programmes. Theory-driven evaluations are essential for distinguishing between the validity of programme implementation and the validity of programme theory. Addressing the social needs of communities through social development and transformation is a top priority for the South African Government. South Africa faces a shortage of Social Work Practitioners (SWPs) due to emigration, as well as insufficient numbers of university graduates. This shortage has left the current SWPs with severe workload pressures. The South African Department of Social Development (DSD) initiated, in 2004, the training of Social Auxiliary Workers (SAWs) to serve as assistants to the SWPs. The SAW qualification initiative has been developed as a course accredited with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) at the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 4. Providers of SAW training courses are accredited by the Health and Welfare Sectoral Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) and by the South African Council for Social Services Professions (SACSSP). The empirical part of the study was conducted in two stages. The first stage consisted of a clarificatory evaluation, wherein a step-by-step logical participatory process was followed for the clarification and development of the programme theory. This process resulted in logic models and a theory-of-change model against which the evaluation questions for the study were developed. These questions assessed the need for the SAW training programme - and for the SAW training programme planning and design. It was found that there was a need for SAW training programmes and that the SAW training programme had been designed to address this need. The second stage consisted of an implementation evaluation. This was done by means of a data matrix using the evaluation aspects for each of the objectives developed during the clarificatory evaluation. Data gathering was done by means of content analysis, focus group workshops and questionnaires. Data interpretations, conclusions and judgements were made with regard to each of the objectives and consolidated in a table format which indicated the outputs and outcomes, implementation results- and a judgement and recommendation for each objective. It was found that a standardised and structured process was followed most of the time, but that the knowledge and skills training elements, particularly in their practical application, left room for improvement. The study illustrates the advantages of a theory-based evaluation that assists with programme planning and modification, knowledge development and the planning of evaluation studies.

Abstract:
The rights that govern a person's workplace relationship, worker rights, are an important part of everyday lifefor many people on earth. As these rights are violated, the safety of the workers livelihood is threatened and as such the lack of security undermines the social contract in society. The social contract approach to corruption, as championed by Bo Rothstein, holds that as the social contract is rejected, corruption ensues. This study examines the relationship between worker rights violations and corruption using OLS regressionwith a range of control variables. The essay finds that there is a relationship between the degree of worker right violations and corruption, but only in higher welfare countries. In the studied countries with the lowest welfare, the relationship does not manifest itself. The essay also finds that in comparison to other factors of rule of law worker right violations is perhaps not the most important one when finding determinants of corruption.

In this paper, the author focuses on the policy of both Malaysia and the United Kingdom as a host country regarding the rights of migrant as the topic of the paper. In this paper the author uses comparative analysis by comparing the migration policy of Malaysia and the United Kingdom and focuses on the migrant worker rights to see if there are any possibilities or tendencies that Malaysia adopted the migration policy of the United Kingdom. In conclusion, the United Kingdom policy regarding the system and recruitment of migrant workers in order to limit the influx of migrant workers influenced Malaysia to adopt similar policy. But Malaysia has different implementation of policy regarding migrant worker rights comparing to the United Kingdom.

This is the searching course for “the essence of social worker ethics”、“the power of regulation training” and “life experience” based on a practicing social worker sharing her self-experience on some incidents regarding social work ethics. It probes into the meaning and possible interpretation of social work ethics at different position through self-narrating to recall what she has encountered at different career such as “Taipei Youth Counsel Committee”, ”Social Welfare Service Center of Taipei Social Welfare Department”. It also studies the impact upon those social workers who are under the regulation training power at different organizations; meanwhile, it changes the social worker’s perspective upon his/her client, self-position, and counseling strategies. In addition, by conversation and communication with others, the author has discovered the value from her growth experience. And these value frame become the different level ethics with the clients and counseling choice for a social worker like me at different organization and social ethics The researcher has found out“the ethics of social worker” is a false issue for her; instead, the core issue is the researchers has being controlled and trapped in social norm and structure. There fore, social worker ethics is not used as a tool to control social worker; it is an examination tool for social worker. The administration power in public sector would corrupt a social worker easily without his/her self-consciousness. It could be achieved only by social worker’s self- judgment to across the wide gape between service providing, ethic concern and client’s needs. In addition, by continuous self-narrating the author could fight with “the regulation training power of the mainstream discourse” at social work practice, life experience and writing thesis. It also help the author developing a resistant liberty and for social worker ethics.

The insufficiency of social worker in protective social work prompts a major issue for the society as the change in the structure of family along with unemployment, crime, divorce and other problems set off a plethora of cases related to home violence and child abuse which pressure the social workers at the front line in recent years. For that reason, the government proposes a plan called “Enriching social workforce in 10 years”, with this plan, the government hopes to expand the size and number of social workers through organizing and compiling within the government sectors, and the civil servant examination so that more local authorities are able to be assigned for more certified social workers who have passed the civil servant examination held by the government, and whose salary, benefits and promotion are being protected under the Public Service Service Act. Especially to the individual protective case with high employee turnover rate, through the civil servant examination, the formal and long-term certified social workers are extremely helpful and productive in term of stabilizing the man power in dealing with those individual protective cases. When the civil social workers join the individual protective case sector of the local authorities, the stress, long-hour, plus the social affair bureaucracy often drive those people out of the field of individual protective case as enthusiasm cannot outweigh the government system. To social worker in protective social work, it is a dilemma and a clash between an urge for protecting one individual and a restriction scaffolded by the governmental system as it has pressurized the work of the social workers protective social work, a proportion of resignment arises. With no solution to the problem, it clearly shows that the job adaptation for the civil social workers in protective social work requires reinforcement and discussion. Thereof, the aim of the study is to understand how the civil social workers who handle the individual protect case overwhelm the social affair bureaucracy without having to lose passion for helping others, and carry on this work experience of serving the public. The study focuses on probing the process of shaping one’s recognition towards the profession of social worker, the motive for taking the civil servant examination and the selection for the sector, and the experience obtained from working for the government and how to find the propulsion for serving others. The study applies the method of quantitative research which utilizes the social workers who deal with protective case as the subject. A personal interviews are conducted with four senior social workers whose seniority are over 3 years in protective social work, later, the analysis is assorted and conducted by using the narration from the subjects regarding their experience prior to joining civil social workforce, the motivation for taking the civil servant examination and the experience after being assigned and working in handling individual protective case. The researcher has also implemented the control and reflection by using his own experience and story obtained from working for the government so as to generate a novel understanding and view. This is a relatively new stimulation and experience to both the researcher and the subject of the research, in other words, more meaning can be provided and defined through the reciprocation of stories. Based on what Professor Lin Qing-Jiang had mentioned concerning the three phases of occupational socialization which are the career choice made by oneself, the personal choice made by the social system and the devotion of oneself at work, the study has sorted a framework of individual cognitive towards career, the shock and compliance of the culture in the social affair bureaucracy, and discovered three themes of motivation which can be used to depict the process of occupational socialization for the four subjects who work in civil protective social work: 1.The experience gained in the government sector ameliorates the adaptation of new working environment. 2.Equitable monitor and management helps stabilize the social workforce. 3.Career recognition is the foundation and support to service retention. Finally, according the finding and conclusion of the study, the study has proposed some suggestions for the screening, recruiting, training and educating of the social worker as well as for any further study in the future.

Social workers play a role in the implementation of social welfare business because of the needs of the country, and follow their ethical services to provide services and discipline themselves. However, in the course of service, capitalism has arisen, and the service content is no longer just to provide services. In order to convince the people with concrete results, the standardization and index content of services are listed in accordance with the procurement law. In order to survive and compete, the bidding unit rigidified the service system into a machine-based operation and alienated social workers. The social worker is deprived of the ability to evaluate and deal with the case, and then the case is forced into the model to conform to the state setting. In feminism, "cognition is deconstruction" is constructed in a situation. Accepting the process of empowerment will inevitably understand the social operation and the myth of breaking the role because of self-growth, and then make a new balance in the working environment. Therefore, through the post-structured female education, five kinds of thinking points on the criticism of power and knowledge: positionality, questioning the generation of knowledge, the identification of the flow, deconstructing the dual knowledge and authority, and understanding how the social worker can obtain the empowerment the work situation. The power of power and the construction of a workplace environment that develops the essence of social work. The results of the comprehensive study are as follows: 1.The role of the resettlement agency being constructed: (1) Supervisor role - commodity packaging and product controller. (2) The role of social workers - quality control staff and production line. 2.the expression of authority - oppression and downtrodden. 3.social workers' conscientization and education. 4.see the agency of social workers. Social work licensure has been implemented for 14 years, what kind of impact on Taiwanese social workers and what is its meaning to them? This study aims to explore the social worker’s labor situation and the views, expectations of the social worker under the existing social work licensing system. In this study, questionnaires were distributed to the member of Taichung social worker Association, a total of 301 questionnaires were printed, 155 valid questionnaires, effective response rate 51.5%; also conducting in-depth interviews with 12 practice social worker. Results as follows: First, in terms of practical satisfaction and expectation of social work licensure system, “professional growth” scores the top. Second, respondents who expect to gain from social work licensure are a lot more than respondents who did obtain from social work licensure. Respondents felt disappointed for social work licensure system fails to enhance the public with better understanding of the duty of social workers. They also disappointed in the failure of the system to provide social workers with better payment and well-developed welfare. Third, subjects take positive view to the legalization of professional continuing education, but take negative view to the supplementary measure of the legalization system. Forth, it is concerned greatly by the subjects that possessing a license may not indicate one’s higher competitiveness than well-experienced social workers. Discussions of the current social work licensure system and suggestions for groups in this field, employing units and social workers were provided to conclude the study.

Social work is an artistic work. We show our moral values when we provide social services, and these services include our ideals and values of social work we are insisting and believing at the same time. This partly shows that social workers hold values and thoughts of social work in the process of practicing the involvement of moral-oriented social work. In addition, social workers always encounter ethical dilemma or various practical difficulties when they are practicing their ideals of social work and value-embedded methods. In this research, the author borrow the concept of alienation which proposed by Carl Marx and deems that social workers who are in the gap between their ideals of social work and the practical reality will have the feelings of alienation gradually. This study, therefore, is aimed to go through how social workers figure out the changing of themselves between their ideals and realities in the life experiences of school life to practice world with an exploring view, based on the theory of Alienation. The main participants in this study are undergraduate and graduate students of social work department, as well as social workers, and the total number of participants is nine. Three different themes of life experience narratives in the social work life world of participants are described, including (1) the ideals and values toward social work, (2) the feelings and situations when facing difficulties while practicing, and (3) the ways of solving the difficulties when encountering a gap between the ideals of social work and the reality of social work living world. After illustrating participants’ narratives, the author then reinterprets participants’ life stories and the contexts on the basis of alienation proposed by Carl Marx. In the conclusion, the feeling of alienation and isolation of social workers will be discussed, and idea about social worker’s self could be deliberated with different perspectives. Key words: subjective values, ideals of social work, life-world, alienation

The research aims to explore factors influencing career transfer of qualified social workers from contract employee to civil servant, and to look at its impacts on both agencies before and after shifting. In addition literature review and document analysis, this research mainly took qualitative analysis as main methodology. Twelve qualified social workers of local government accepted in-depth interview, including 7 transferred and 5 un-transferred. The main findings include: 1. Factors influencing career transfer can be categorized into three dimensions, policy, organization and individual. The transferred regulation is fundamental to career transfer. This is followed by the supporting level of local government to social worker’s transfer. As to individual factor, better rewarding system for civil servant is a strong incentive for the decision making of career transfer. 2. Relative stability for civil servant post is an attractive reason for choosing transfer. But the new transferred environment is not always friendly. They are many challenges and problem faced by those transferred. For example, inadequate knowledge and skill in administration, and relative discrimination caused by less formal channel gained the post. 3. Loss of qualified social workers for some local government is a result of lack of well transferred mechanism. This would bring negative impacts on organizational climate and morale. If the measure of ‘transfer in place’ is taken the local government has to invest more budgets on personnel. How to cope with the dilemma is a challenge to decision makers. Finally, according to results, the study provides twelve suggestions from three aspects, social worker, organization and system. Hopefully, they will be able to contribute to policy and practice of this transferred mechanism, and to building up of a sound social work system in Taiwan.

The work dilemmas encountered in today's social work have also been encountered in the development of social work in the past. The predecessors have also taken to the streets in order to strive for work rights and survival. People are the carriers of living in social entities. Social workers are no exception. In the current events, people are attracted by various economic, political, social and cultural contexts and external forces are often difficult to see. The whole picture of the incident can only be learned from the historical experience of the past by examining the present with a broader perspective. History and reality are inseparable. Only by understanding the past can we understand the present and grasp the future. Based on this, this study will use the thoughts and deeds of Taiwan's senior social work teacher Li Yunshang for more than 50 years as the main axis of research, to understand the development track of Taiwan's social work, and to review how the predecessors used to practice social work in all chaos. And sum up the spiritual connotation and concrete actions to construct the image of Taiwanese social workers in the past and provide opportunities for future generations to compare.

From the experience of personally interacting with the clients, I reviewed I am writing this essay by action research, it divides into 3 parts- feeling, consciousness and action. Starting from observing my true feelings, internalising them, and build the helping consciousness. Based on the established helping conciousness, I seleted the required actions. The process of actions includes the interaction of system, culture, sexualality, family relationship and social roles. From writing, practicing and self dialogue, the ideology of the social workers keeps strengthening in my mind. There are 3 sections of timeline. The first section is from February to June, 2013, I played a family- like role of a kid in the placement agencies. The interaction with the kids stroke my previous perspection and make me think of more flexibilities and variations on this role. I learned and surprised by the relationship I established with this kid. During July 2013 to January 2014, I finished my classes at graduate school, returning home and prepare my thesis. I reviewed the experiences from internhip and analyze the interaction between kids. During February 2014 to May 2015, I decided to start my new journey in the Psychiatric field.
