Full textConsuming dietary supplements is common in today's society. Examples of dietary supplements is energizing supplements, performance enhancing supplements and vitamins and minerals. A compilation of surveys in Sweden show that 61% of men and 41% of women consume dietary supplements. Athletes are experiencing that the products are beneficial and provides positive effects on the performance, even though there is a lack of knowledge about all the risks of consuming dietary supplement and a field partly un-researched. Consumption of doping substances also occur among athletes. Doping means to affect or change the performance with various substances. There are different types of doping substances, where anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are the most common. The prevalence of AAS has increased during the 2000s. The prevalence of the consumption of dietary supplements and doping in Västmanlands län are presented in the present study. Results revealed differences in gender and age and the relationship between consumption and exercise. Analyses have been performed on data from Västmanland Sports Federation, which through its anti-doping work conducted a survey in Västmanlands län. The results show that it is most common among men between the ages 17 – 30 to consume dietary supplements and to consume a few times a week or more often. The likelihood of consuming dietary supplements increases with strength training. Social cognitive theory is being used to interpret the social aspect of consumption and provides a deeper understanding for how a behavior can be developed in an individual.

Full textBackground: Rehabilitation within hospital care involves teamwork between assistant nurses and physiotherapists. Assistant nurses have an important role in rehabilitation but there is a lack of research regarding their perceptions of their role. Aim: To investigate the assistant nurses’ experiences of participation in physiotherapy rehabilitation of patients in hospital care. Method: A qualitative design with inductive approach was used. The data was collected through semi-structured group interviews with assistant nurses and the material was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Result: The analysis resulted in five categories which became two themes, Good self-confidence and feeling of being important in the rehabilitation and Collaboration regarding the rehabilitation is affected by the individuals and the environment. Discussion: The assistant nurses’ perceptions of their participation is affected by consequences, individuals, behaviour and environment which is confirmed by the social cognitive theory and the operant conditioning theory. Conclusions: The assistant nurses experience participation in the rehabilitation because they are engaged, actively involved and feel useful. A weakness in their participation is insufficient communication about the rehabilitation. The authors consider that a replication of the study and more research on assistant nurses’ perceptions and the usefulness of their work are required. Full textBackground: Children with type 1-diabetes are generally less active than other children. Contributory reasons could be caregivers’ fear of hypoglycemia and lack of knowledge. To be a caregiver with a child with chronic disease causes of difficulties and science has shown reduced quality of life. The role off the physiotherapist in the care of diabetes is today limited. Aim: To explore caregivers’ thoughts about their children with type 1-diabetes and physical activity. Method: A qualitative semi-structured interview study with descriptive design. An inductive approach was used for the qualitative content analysis of the material. Result: The data analysis resulted in four main categories and eleven subcategories. The result describes caregivers’ thoughts and experiences about how physical activity affect their children, which possibility children had to perform activities, their knowledge and what they are missing and their experience of pressure to manage physical activity. Conclusion: To be the caregiver to a child with type 1-diabetes raises many thoughts and feelings about physical activity. Difficulties to control the child’s blood sugar and to be able to participate in the child’s activities, often led to feelings of failure and stress. Lack of knowledge about physical activity may be an explanation to insecurity that may hinder the child to be physical activity. Full textBackground: Soccer is the sport where most people injure themselves during sports in Sweden. Regardless of the injury, the soccer player may need to get in contact with a physiotherapist for rehabilitation. Biopsychosocial factors are important during rehabilitation as they will affect the individual's ability to return to sports. However, there is a lack of clarity among physiotherapists what psychosocial interventions means and how they should be used. Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate rehabilitated soccer players' experiences of psychosocial factors of importance for returning to soccer, as well as their experiences of how physiotherapists have taken these psychosocial factors into account during rehabilitation. Method: A descriptive qualitative design with an inductive and deductive approach has been used. A purposive sampling technique was applied. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Result: The data analysis resulted in six categories which were experienced as important for returning to soccer. Three involving psychological factors: negative emotions, motivation, and the feeling of being seen. Three involving social factors: affiliation with the team, expectations from the family and support from coaches. According to the soccer players experiences the physiotherapists did not take psychosocial factors into account as much as the soccer players stated that they needed. Conclusion: Psychosocial factors was of importance for the players return to soccer and the experience of how physiotherapists took the factors into account affected the rehabilitation. The players who had a need for psychological and social support also experienced that they lacked questions about psychosocial factors from the physiotherapist. Keywords: Physiotherapy, social cognitive theory, soccer, psychological factors, social factors.

Full textBackground: Cancer is one of the most common causes of death amongst children and about 300 children in Sweden get sick every year. Social, psychological and physical factors are negatively affected in children with cancer, which has a negative impact on their quality of life. Children with cancer should be offered physical activity as psychosocial symptoms can be reduced by it. Objective was to compile research on how behavioral change in form of physical activity could possibly affect bio-physcho-social factors and the quality of life of children with oncological diseases and to assess the quality of those studies. Method: A systematic literature study was conducted where the searches were made in the databases PubMed, Medline and CINAHL Plus. Seven studies were included in accordance to the objective and issues of the study. The quality was assessed according to SBU's review templates for randomized controlled trial. Results: Four studies reported that physical activity affects the quality of life of children with cancer. One study showed effect on physical factors and two showed no statistically significant effects. Five of the studies were assessed to be of high quality and two of average. Conclusions: A behavioral change in the shape of physical activity may affect biopsychosocial factors and the quality of life of children with oncological diseases.

Full textBackground: Since the population is aging the decrease in muscle function and balance impairments leads to increased disable. Which has a negative impact on walking ability, though through functional training, by training muscle strength and balance can enhance walking ability in elderly. Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate how elderly people walking ability, self-efficacy and any anxiety about going, influenced by two different eight-week interventions within municipal operations, and how adherence to exercise is influenced by self-efficacy and anxiety. Method: The study design is an experimental variant of the pretest-posttest control group design. Nineteen participants’ ≥65 years recruited consecutively through selection. Test results from TUG, self-selected walking speed, and estimates on anxiety and self-efficacy before going was collected. Result: No significant difference (p>0, 05) occurred between or within groups for the test variables. The correlation analysis showed none, low, moderate correlation, both positive and negative but no significant correlations was observed. Conclusion: The results of the study can’t be generalized to a larger population, but can be the basis for further studies with a larger sample to be randomized on the basis of population. More studies are needed to investigate if only walking exercise is effective for developing the walking ability.

Full textBackground: Women have higher sickness absence rates than men especially within the female dominated profession of assistant nurses. Hence, there is reason to draw attention to and identify what is perceived to promote women’s work attendance and work ability within this profession. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore older female assistant nurses’ experiences of importance for the maintenance of work ability in municipal elderly care. Methods: A descriptive qualitative interview study was conducted and analysed with qualitative manifest content analysis. Six healthy assistant nurses between 55-58 years in municipal elderly care were selected through purposive sampling for semi-structured in-depth interviews. Findings: The assistant nurses are able to identify and implement needs of their own. They adapt, mainly in the private life, and achieve well-being through a meaningful existence. Their behavior can be linked to sence of coherence, empowerment and internal locus of control. Nine categories were identified: Health and physical activity, Physical work environment, Organisation, Collaboration and communication, Intentional adaptions, Work satisfaction, Meaningful existence, Preference and attitude and Societal level. Conclusion: Mainly aspects of psychosocial nature, with elements of physical activity, are perceived to promote work ability by the female assistant nurses. The findings can contribute to form a basis for promotional work where a behavioral medicine approach can be of value in the understanding of how biopsychosocial factors interact for the maintenance of work ability.

Full textBackground: As a physiotherapist in primary care, there are several different treatment methods for persistent low back pain to choose from, but no clear guidelines to follow. Based on the clinical reasoning, physiotherapists take decisions that are affected and changed in the patient encounter. Since there is a lack of research that have investigated how physiotherapists educated in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) describe their clinical reasoning to patients with persistent low back pain, this study aims to illustrate the physiotherapists' view of the topic. Aim: To explore how physiotherapists describe their clinical reasoning regarding the use of MDT for patients with persistent low back pain. Method: A qualitative semi-structured interview study with an inductive approach and a descriptive design was conducted. The data collection included six interviews. A qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Result: The analysis generated 22 subcategories divided into seven categories. The informants described their clinical reasoning when using MDT as their view of the method, patient participation in examination, structure and clarity, findings that affect treatment, hypothesis testing, patient responsibility in the treatment and evaluation of own abilities. Conclusion: The study's results showed that the informants described their clinical reasoning when using MDT with persistent low back pain in primary care were mainly influenced by biomechanical findings with the patient. Psychological findings were described as secondary source to take into consideration, and social factors were described very little or not at all even though they are important to take into consideration in order to achieve a behavioral change. Thus, a development area for MDT in physiotherapy has been clarified as there is evidence that a biopsychosocial approach to persistent low back pain is preferable.

Full textBackground: Meeting patients in a digital format increases with the vision of increased e-health. It can be useful to reach more patients and work complementary to traditional physiotherapy. There is little information on digital patient meetings with a focus on being able to support behavioral changes. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how physiotherapists describe their possibilities and limitations to support behavioral changes in digital patient meetings.Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Six physiotherapists participated in this study and data from the interviews were analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Result: The interviews resulted in five categories with twelve subcategories. These categories were: the need to bridge the physical distance, digital physiotherapy fits for shorter, simpler contacts, more clarity is required in digital meetings to engage the patient, the lack of physical contact during digital physiotherapy prevents and routines for follow-up. Conclusions: The participants described the digital patient meetings as positive for simple and quick patient contacts. However, they meant that it could not replace the traditional physiotherapy since the lack of physical contact and the lack of follow-up limits their ability to support behavioral changes. This study provides support for continued research on the organizational implementation of supporting working methods for behavioral change in a digital environment.

Full textBakground: Hamstring injury is the most common injury in elite football and has a high re- injury rate. The rehabilitation of hamstring injuries are intense since the player should preferably be back quickly to contribute to the team performance. Despite the intensity of the rehabilitation, it needs to be of a long-term perspective and prevent future re-injury. Aim: To explore physiotherapists’ experiences of factors that affect rehabilitation of hamstring injuries in male football players in Swedish elite football clubs. Method: Qualitative semistructured interview study with descriptive design. A purposive sample of five physiotherapists, working with Swedish elite football were interviewed. The data collection was analyzed with qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Result: The analysis resulted in five categories and 19 subcategories. The categories were the physiotherapist’s conditions, the player’s condition, external pressure, approach with the player and the circumstances of the return to play. The physiotherapists’ experienced that the player, the coach and the knowledge of the physiotherapist are the most important factors in rehabilitation of hamstring injuries. Conclusion: Physiotherapists experienced that adaptation of their behavior was required according to the circumstances of the surrounding environment to achieve successfull rehabilitation. The study’s result is difficult to generalize as the number of physiotherapists involved in the study was few.

Full textBackground: The number of elderly in our society is increasing and the quantity of physically inactive seniors is growing along with it, this observation can be viewed as a global health issue. By exploring inactive elderly people´s view of physical activity it can contribute to valuable knowledge for supporting this age group into a more physical active lifestyle. Aim: To find out what elderly experiences have importance for being physically active, and what they think can make them change their behavior into a more physically active lifestyle. Method: The study was qualitative, semistructured interviews were made, a convenient sample of six women, 65-74 years old, were included. Data were interpreted inductive with a qualitative content analysis and then sorted into codes and categories. Result: Physical environment and external support was considered to be important by elderly inactive people to be more physically active. Ordinary everyday activities are prioritized over physical exercise. External support, changed habits after retirement, knowledge, experience and attitudes regarding physical activity. This altogether results in an impact on the level of physical activity amongst elders. Conclusion: The psychosocial factors were perceived to have great importance in terms of physical activity. The participants expressed how the support from the surroundings has a great importance for a behavioural change.

Full textBackground: Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis suffers from a chronic inflammatory disease. It is important that they incorporate physical activity throughout their life to minimize symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic may have changed how they maintain physical activity, as well as how physiotherapist plan exercise. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate how individuals with RA and physiotherapists at a rheumatologic clinic experience that COVID-19 has impacted patients’ rehabilitation exercise. Method: In a qualitative interview study two physiotherapists and four individuals with RA at a rheumatologic clinic was interviewed. Interviews were carried out by phone or videolink using a semistructured interviewguide. Data analysis was a manifest qualitative analysis. Result: Seven categories describe factors that impacted individuals with RA’s rehabilitation exercise: the importance of training equipment, compliance with training, reaction to changing conditions for training, alternative solutions enabling training, the importance of locations for exercise and its availability, the impact of weather in relations to exercise, experiences of restrictions for individuals at risk. Conclusion: Participants were positively inclined towards exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of environmental factors and the equipment availability was recurring. The results indicate that concern regarding the consequences of reduced exercise was greater than contracting COVID-19.
