Twenty years ago Jeffrey Freedman had the opportunity to spend eighteen months in the archives of the 18th-century Swiss publishing house, Société Typographique de Neuchâtel (STN), housed at the Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire in Switzerland. That research is the foundation of his newest book. Its premise is that book history has traditionally stayed within national or regional borders, but books don’t; they go where they are wanted. ABSTRACTRobert Darnton's acclaimed 1995 work on the late eighteenth-century francophone illegal book trade, The forbidden best-sellers of pre-revolutionary France, has become one of the most cited and studied texts in its field. The culmination of thirty years' archival research and reflection, it roots Darnton's previous case-study-driven articles and monographs in a wide-ranging empirical survey of the order books of the Swiss printer-booksellers, the Société typographique de Neuchâtel. It claims to offer readers a picture of what illegal books went into bookshops everywhere in pre-revolutionary France. The first fruits of the French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe project, a digital humanities initiative that has created an on-line database revealing the STN's entire trade, this article challenges Darnton's interpretation of the nature and utility of the Neuchâtel archive. It demonstrates that the STN's order books are an unreliable gauge of general French demand. It goes further. It argues for a nuanced polycentric understanding of the eighteenth-century Francophone book trade, and outlines a bibliometric digital humanities pathway that might lead us there.

Les livres confisqués de Pouplios Markidis Poulios. Une clé pour le trafic du livre français pendant les années de maturation des Lumières néo-helléniques L’aventure de l’imprimeur Pouplios Markidis Poulios à Bucarest en 1797 est bien connue : le fond de livres en langue étrangère qu’il avait illégalement importé a été confisqué par le consulat autrichien à la suite des actions entreprises par le souverain de Valachie, Alexandre Ypsilanti. Grâce à la liste des titres de ces livres conservée dans les archives autrichiennes(publiée par Hurmuzaki) et, surtout, grâce à la possibilité que nous avons d’accéder par Internet aux bibliographies, aux catalogues de bibliothèques et aux copies numérisées, il nous a été possible de reconstituer l’identité bibliographique de la quasi-totalité des æuvres confisquées. On constate que les livres français de l’Ancien Régime (traités philosophiques et/ou sur l’athéisme, ouvrages de politique et d’économie, satires anticléricales, chroniques scandaleuses, littérature érotique/pornographique, etc.) en constituent la plus grande partie. Il s’agit de «livres philosophiques» clandestins qui recensent l’inventaire de la mythologie de la décadence, du despotisme, de la corruption des mæurs, de l’hypocrisie sociale et de la transgression religieuse, tout en démasquant la spéculation et les scandales. Grâce à un réseau bien organisé ayant comme point de départ des imprimeries qui s’activaient hors des frontières françaises –la plus connue étant la Société Typographique de Neuchâtel– ils étaient distribués dans toute l’Europe. Une partie des livres confisqués de Poulios pourrait provenir du stock de Thomas Trattner, imprimeur notoire qui vendait des livres français clandestins à Vienne et des réimpressions pirates de ces livres sur le territoire des Habsbourg. Mais il se peut aussi que ces ouvrages soient des contrefaçons provenant de l’imprimerie de Poulios. À en juger par les traductions et les références repérées (Rétif de la Bretonne, Delisle de Sales, Mercier, D. Katartzis) il semble que le «monde souterrain» du livre philosophique français –dont une partie importante avait été interdite par la censure autrichienne– avait réussi à pénétrer les cercles non seulement de la diaspora grecque mais aussi des Principautés Danubiennes et ceci avant la «décennie cruciale des années 1790». L’interdiction de la circulation des livres en 1797 est liée à la conversion idéologique d’Ypsilanti et à son alignement sur la politique anti-française des Habsbourg. Les ouvrages confisqués de Poulios ouvrent un champ de recherche fructueux sur la contribution des livres clandestins français à la maturation des Lumières. Une liste des titres des livres confisqués est jointe en annexe.

Un ancien régime typographique: Culture manuscrite, société graphique et ponctuation turque ottomaneLa présente étude substitue une analyse technique et graphique des opérations typographiques à l’approche politique et culturelle qui met habituellement l’accent sur les obstacles opposés à l’apparition de l’imprimerie dans l’Empire ottoman. Au-delà d’une démarche historiographique centrée sur les échecs de la modernisation culturelle, un examen combiné des caractères typographiques et des signes de ponctuation invite à proposer une histoire conjuguée de l’imprimé et du manuscrit. Celle-ci, tournée vers l’étude des vitalités textuelles, met au jour des convergences entre les productions calligraphiques, les expérimentations de la typographie et les progrès de la lithographie. Elle relie le travail du typographe aux actions de la main, les activités de l’éditeur aux productions de l’auteur, l’impression des matrices aux inscriptions de la plume. La ponctuation est un terreau d’innovation qui propose, au fil de ses modalisations, de nouvelles insertions, créations et hybridations contribuant au développement de la société graphique ottomane : les gens de l’écrit (scribes, copistes, lettrés, mais aussi éditeurs, typographes et imprimeurs) produisent des textes en fonction d’une culture manuscrite, de contraintes techniques et des caractères propres à la langue turque ottomane. Dès lors, une approche technique de l’ensemble des formes de production écrite permet d’ouvrir un nouveau chantier : celui d’une histoire croisée de la langue et des textes.

Abstract:
A la mort de Voltaire, une équipe d’admirateurs du patriarche fonde la « Société Littéraire Typographique » pour réaliser une nouvelle édition complète de son œuvre. Ce projet dissident et pionnier, réalisé sous la direction de Beaumarchais et de Condorcet dans la clandestinité, s’inscrit dans la perspective d’une diffusion militante des textes et des idées des Lumières. Malgré les innombrables obstacles qui s’opposent à cette entreprise subversive, les correspondants de la SLT parviennent à « finir ce cher Voltaire » et livrent à la postérité, entre 1785 et 1790, une édition in octavo en 70 volumes et une édition in-Douze en 90 volumes. Cette édition posthume et intégrale de l’œuvre de Voltaire constitue une première dans le champ éditorial français, à la fois par le luxe et le soin apporté à l’édition « chef d’œuvre de l’art typographique » mais aussi par l’apport de la correspondance, qui livre l’image de l’homme privé et même intime, à côté de l’œuvre littéraire. Le dernier volume, intitulé Vie de Voltaire, est le texte qui relie les deux ensembles. Pour Condorcet, Voltaire a fait de sa vie un chef d’œuvre, qu’il s’agit de livrer à la postérité pour sa valeur morale et politique. Au-Delà de son caractère exemplaire, cette édition pose de nombreuses questions, historiques, philologiques et idéologiques qui touchent à l’histoire du livre, à la connaissance du corpus voltairien, à l’enjeu politique et idéologique majeur que représente l’œuvre de Voltaire dans le contexte très polémique des années pré-Révolutionnaires, au mythe littéraire édifié par cette entreprise éditoriale, et à la réception de l’œuvre ainsi rendue publique
Upon Voltaire’s death, a group of enlightened admirers of the patriarch founded the « Société Littéraire Typographique » with the aim of publishing a new complete edition of his works. This subversive and pioneering project, directed by Beaumarchais and Condorcet in clandestinity, was aimed at disseminating the texts and ideas of the Enlightenment. Despite the innumerous obstacles standing in the way of this subversive entreprise, the correspondents of the SLT were able to complete « ce cher Voltaire » and deliver to posterity, between 1785 and 1790, an edition in-Octavo in 70 volumes and an edition in-12° in 90 volumes. This complete posthumous edition of Voltaire’s works was a first in the French publishing, both for the luxury and the care which caracterized the realization of the book, « a masterpiece of typographical art » and the correspondence, in which we can see an image of the private man and his intimacy, beside his literary writings. The last volume, the Vie de Voltaire, is the textum and the link between these two parts. For Condorcet, Voltaire had transformed his life into a masterpiece, which the editors wanted to show to posterity for its political and moral value. In addition to its exemplarity, this edition raises many historical, philological and ideological questions related to book history, to the knowledge of the Voltairian corpus, to the major political and ideological issues portrayed in Voltaire’s writings in the very polemical context of pre-Revolutionay times, to the literary myth created by this editorial enterprise, and to the reception of his writings thus made public
