Abstract:
The paper presents a critical discourse analysis of Kavery Nambisan’s The Story That Must Not Be Told based on Teun A.van Dijk’s discourse-cognition-society triangle approach. Kavery Nambisan, the South Indian writer is prominently known for her social themes and in that way, the novel explicates the abyss between haves and have-nots. Though the elite residents of Vaibhav apartments and the local workers of the slum Sitara are interdependent, the dominant’s root hatred for the vulnerable slum dwellers is highlighted. The emotions and opinions of the two different worlds divided by a single wall carry poignant episodes of the lifestyle of the elite as well as the existence of the poor with less basic needs. The discourse structures of the elite exhibit the power in controlling the slum dwellers, where the story further moves to the demolition of the slum and migration. The personal context of Simon to support the slum receives huge opposition from the apartment residents. Van Dijk brings forth the connection among discourse, cognition and society stating that cognitive perceptions influence the interpretation of discourse elements built within the social structures. Similarly, the paper attempts to portray how Simon, the protagonist’s motive to help the slum people failed due to the power of the dominion, class conflicts and varied perspectives.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study explores the administrative law enforcement from three perspectives, namely, discourse, cognition and society, according to van Dijk’s theory of critical discourse studies. “Discourse” is the essential linguistic analysis of administrative law enforcement, which may lead to the tension between law-executors and law-breakers, as well as to ease the conflicts and achieve the balance, so that the discourse mode with considerable tolerance and explanation is of great significance for improving the current practice of administrative law enforcement. “Cognition” deals with psychological model based on cognitive and social psychology. In the interaction of administrative law enforcement, the social roles are institutionalized by the context, which is achieved through knowledge background, cognitive methods, communicative purpose, role expectations and information transmission. “Society” focuses on the investigation of institutions, powers and groups based on sociology. There are normative factors and non-normative variables in the administrative law enforcement: the former refers to superior will, judicial review, supervision and defense of law-breaker, while the latter involves administrative habits and experience, natural emotions, interest and mass media. In the institutional context, social variables affect the implementation of administrative law enforcement in different discourse modes.

Abstract:
The social turn of cognitive linguistics and cognitive turn of critical discourse analysis breed the opportunity for cognitive linguistics and critical discourse analysis to develop towards a more converging path that integrates both cognitive and social dimensions of language. As known, political discourse is intrinsically persuasive and always informs a power relation with attempts to achieve effectiveness of persuasion. This paper argues that both approaches (Cognitive Linguistics and CDA) are concerned with surfaced evidence of implicit ideologies hidden behind political discourse, so the integration of CL and CDA could extend the research scope for both paradigms on one hand, and provide more powerful explanatory tools to augment our understanding of the intertwined relations between language, cognition and society on the other.

Abstract:
The emergence of pornography cases that had gone viral on social media with the tagline "V Garut" shocked the public because the act was committed by a woman and several men. The female suspect claimed that this act was done because of coercion and pressure that the male suspect had put on her. The research aims to explain the level of text, social cognition and social context of the pornography news of "V Garut" on the online media of TribunJabar.id. The research used a qualitative descriptive method with the theoretical approach of critical discourse analysis by Teun A. Van Dijk. Data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and documentation. The research object was related to the news of "V Garut" on the online media TribunJabar.id with two informants. The results of research at the text level in the elements of macrostructures, superstructures and microstructures explain the existence of a discourse indicating an unfavourable situation such as violence and marginalization on the role of "V Garut". Journalists’ social cognition tends to judge this case as “unique” phenomenon, not focusing on a social issue that must be addressed in society. Based on the analysis of the social context of this news, it can be seen that there is a powerful practice of the media and the authority’s access in reporting the “V Garut” case. Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, pornography, social cognition, social context, text.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates the cognitive-pragmatic motivations for the emergence of a genre of health communication called Patient Decision Aid (PDA). It elucidates genre as struggle, i.e. how the emerging genre exemplifies various struggles on three strata: the difficulties facing patients, doctors, and health providers at practice level; the changes anticipated to take place at discourse level; and the tensions in the pragmatics-cognition-society nexus. Particularly illustrated here are five struggles that characterize changes or breakthroughs that PDAs are anticipated to make. It suggests that the five struggles roughly correspond to five principles for genre theory proposed by Berkenkotter and Huckin (1993), with some modification of the latter. It also illustrates that genre intervenes in the complexity between social issues and social cognition and that PDAs as a new genre involve restructuring, reshaping and redesigning the key discourse facets (e.g. prior discourse, participants, language, medium, the world, and purpose). Based on examples of Chinese-language PDAs officially released in Taiwan and on information from health professionals, policy makers, and PDA developers, this study contributes empirical evidence toward a better understanding of an emerging genre.

Abstract:
Cognition enhancers—drugs used to enhance cognition in healthy people—have generated a substantial amount of debate in the academic literature. In these debates, cognition enhancers are considered to promise (or threaten) to drastically change society. Cognition enhancers, as a “new breed of drugs,” are significant as they disrupt the licit–illicit binary maintained in the moral logic of pharmaceutical legitimacy. Cognition enhancers, despite putatively going beyond the legitimate purpose of restoring health, are not considered illicit. Their specificity positions them differently from medical, recreational, and other enhancement or “lifestyle” drugs, such that they elicit different rationales of governance. Utilizing a discursive analysis of the debates concerning cognition enhancers, I demonstrate how cognition enhancers cannot be determined by fixed properties either internal or external to themselves, but are rendered (reasonably) coherent through the problematizations that they produce. Questions of the boundaries of treatment and enhancement, equality and fairness, authenticity and autonomy, are bound up with concerns over the nature of being human. The discourse on cognition enhancers is underpinned by the assumption that these drugs do not repair a disorder but rather enhance an already “healthy” subject to an idealized subject, a construct underpinned by conceptions of a “normal” subject that is White, heteromasculine, and nondisabled. This presumption exists in the hinterlands that constitute these drugs as “cognition enhancers.”

Abstract:
The article deals with professional discourse which is defined as a speech in the aspect of the event, permeated with extralinguistic, sociocultural, psychological, professional and other factors, as a verbal communication aimed at theoretical and practical business problems solution and requiring special training and experience in a definite sphere of activity. The situation in professional discourse is a kind of professional knowledge presentation depending on the participants’ personal experience. The structure and the main functions of professional discourse are revealed. The fixed and stereotyped character of any professional activity gives a solid ground for professional domains conceptual linguistic modelling, viewed as a base for languages for specific purposes ideographic description. The linguistic modelling can be carried out within the framework of cognitive spheres I. “Nature”. II. “Man”. III. “Society”. IV. “Cognition (a priori)”. The developed professional discourse description model could serve both the needs of the anthropological theory of language and the need to improve the practice of professional communication in different fields.

Abstract:
The research deals with the problems of poverty with the aim of revealing the situation of rural people experiencing various shortages throughout their daily needs. This poem is also a personal picture of the poet seeing by firsthand the situation of the marginalized people. Through critical discourse analysis by means of Van Dijk model consisting of three dimensions, namely text, social cognition and social context, the picture of the poor in the poem can be seen clearly. The data used are lines of Stanza No. 13 as a representation of the whole poem. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the research indicate that knowledge or education is not limited to one group, but for all; but in practice the poor do not always get the opportunity to obtain proper education. The voice of the poor is not heard; therefore, they are bound by circumstances and cannot do much. In connection with critical discourse analysis, at the level of text, the general theme is the death and fate of the people on the periphery of the society. In the data related, the theme is the absence of opportunities for the poor to get education; the storyline starts from the causes and consequences of poverty and in the microstructure level there are syntactic and lexicon elements. The level of social cognition describes the close relationship between the poet and the elegy and of social conditions pictures the historical background of the text production.

Abstract:
This research focuses on the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s speech in declaring Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel on December 2017. This research aims to: (1) identify the text structure of the speech, (2) describe the social cognition of this speech, (3) and to reveal the social context of this speech. The compiled data is analyzed by using Van Dijk’s CDA theory of socio-cognitive (1988). This theory has interrelated three dimensions of analysis consisting of text structure, social cognition, and social context. The method of this research is qualitative by using the descriptive analysis. The data source of this research is the speech text of Donald Trump declaration speech of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 2017. The result of this research shows that there is semantic aspect (microstructure) used by Donald Trump: Background (7), Detail (4), and Presupposition (15). From the analysis, the researcher argues that Donald Trump tends to be pro-Israel. This is supported in the structure of the text by how it consistently uses direct language to influence the emotional attachment of the intended by using logical facts and emotional involvement to make negative out-group representations to get positive representations to them and their allies. Furthermore, social cognition reveals the ideology and partisanship of Donald Trump about this conflict. It can be identified clearly by correlating the context of this speech to something that related to Israel-Palestine conflict. In social cognition, as the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump has a massive influence to the international world, even though it caused pros and contras for all elements of society. Possible further research about critical discourse analysis can be conducted by analyzing other issues. In short, it is also a suggestion to the other researchers to investigate more variation data such as news, advertisement, movie, and so on

Abstract:
The number of publications aimed at more restrict groups of society has risen significantly over the last years. Magazines targeting groups such as the Protestants or the handicapped, which were either inexistent or restricted to ghettos in the past, have become a reality and are distributed all over Brazil. The magazines Raça Brasil and Junior are part of this new reality. They aim respectively at the blacks and the homosexuals, which are groups whose stereotypes comprise, in our society, a range of negatively-evaluated characteristics and conducts. The hypothesis that is looked into in this work is that the magazines that are aimed at socially devalued groups seek, by means of their discourse, to convey positive images of those groups, so as to have their readership see them favorably. In order to achieve such a goal, van Dijks (2006) triangular approach was used. As seen by this author, sense production can only be conceived of if the triad discourse cognition society is taken into consideration. Besides that, in order to analyze the corpus, which is formed by texts from both of the magazines, Charaudeaus (2009) concept of transformation was used. This process is the result of the co-occurrence of the processes of nomination, qualification, narration, argumentation, and modalization. The analysis led to the conclusion that the images conveyed by the magazines, as a rule, tend to clash with the unfavorable stereotypical images that are generally associated to both of the minorities, being the construction of a positive images grounded on the use various linguistic-discursive procedures. This means that the magazines, up to a certain extent, carry out the same project of self-esteem construction as older alternative publications that were aimed at the homosexuals and blacks in the past. It was also concluded that the negative stereotypes of African-Brazilians and homosexuals work as important parameters for shaping the discourse of both of the magazines.

The theme herein presented is justified by the fact that, despite the feminists movements, there is still a lot to be investigated and to be done about prejudice against women, including in Brazil. The analysis carried out followed a technical-analytical procedure having as analytical categories Society,Cognition and Discourse. Moreover such analysis also has theoretical fundamental issues based upon van Dijk (2012) studies. Therefore, this research took into account the following methodological procedures: 1. Analytical theoretical procedure: theoretical review upon the main concepts focused in this thesis, such as: Discourse; Society; Cognition; Context(s); Genre; Identity; Chronicle as an opinion-based genre. 2. Selection of analysis material: eighty-six (86) musical chronicles written by Chico Buarque de Holanda were selected, among which sixty (60) were produced during the political oppressive military government period in Brazil. Based upon the sixty chronicles, some sample material was selected, taken from the themes which represent the feminism element through poetic language. From this selection onwards, the songs-musical chronicles- presented as samples of cultural and ideological values were chosen in order to represent the feminism elements in different social groups. The results show that there are positive and negative values which evaluate the feminism element as a genre in a society and that such values are linked to a society which is based upon a society whose model is the masculine element, therefore generating prejudice

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This thesis deals with language policies in East Timor, as a socio-discursive practice, guided by the categories of Power, Control and Access, proposed by van Dijk (2000) on his multidisciplinary theory of the ideology that form the basis of Critical Discourse Studies (van Dijk, 2008), from sociocognitive and interactional perspective, in an interface with Cultural Studies. One of the goals is to verify in which measure the language policies of East Timor translate the interests of the different social groups in the country. From a macro-social perspective, the goal is to study the communicative event of the officialization of Portuguese Language in East Timor, based on the text by Geoffrey Hull, presented August 2000 to the National Congress that argued the inclusion of Portuguese as co-official language with Tetun and forcefully criticized the choice of English and Indonesian. The Timorese elite, who predominantly uses Portuguese in formal situations or outside of the country, defined a language policy that reserved a privileged status for this language, using the Power, Control and Access to the institutions and the representative groups of this ruling class. This reality contributes to consolidate, in practice, the ideological belief in a homogeneous national identity, that is problematized in Cultural Studies, by the pedagogical and linear time, of the social cohesion of many as one . This social belief does not constitute, however, the complex narrative of the East Timorese nation, to which is added the performative time, or of inbetweeness, that is characterized by the addition of the beliefs/narratives of marginal groups, whose shared-living results in the supplementarity (which, in this proposal of analysis, represents Counterpower), that is, in the duplication of discourses, that do not pluralize, given the high degree of asymmetry between them, but that end up for modifying the social configuration of the nation.

It is based on the Critical Discourse Analysis with socio-cognitive aspects and in the Textual- Discursive Linguistic. The thesis has as theme the different forms of representation of feminine in Marina Colasanti's chronicles having as a starting point the relationship between the categories: society, cognition and discourse. The general purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the linguistic-discourse studies of feminine gender in Brazil. It has specific objectives as: 1) to identify the social roles of feminine in Marina Colasanti's chronicles; 2) to verify the opinion of the chronicler regarding the values attributed to the female; according to the social cognition; 3) to situate the feminine gender representations in the argumentative structure of the opinion of the chronicler. 4) to identify in the narrative textual sequences the way the feminine is represented. The methodological procedure used is theoretical and analytical with qualitative analysis of documentary material. This is a multidisciplinary research ranked by the cognition sciences. For a good understanding of the process of this thesis, should be mentioned the fact that it is based on the theoretical foundations of Discursive-Textual Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis with socio-cognitive aspects. The analytical categories are: society, discourse and cognition. The corpus consisted of the Marina Colasanti s chronicles that were analyzed from the themes, and their semantic progression for the representation of feminine s social roles in Brazilian society. The results indicate that female representations in Marina Colasanti s chronicles are paradoxical because confront the social cognitions (macho ideology), with the view of the chronicler (feminist ideology). To sum up, these results indicate a change in Brazilian society, in the seventies and eighties, due to the emergence of the contraceptive pill and the professionalization of women in Brazil

Abstract:
This chapter offers an overview of the pragmatic and social communication disorders that can occur after an alteration of the brain, as best exemplified by individuals with right hemisphere damage. It also discusses the theoretical approaches developed to explain indirect speech act comprehension and inference impairments affecting conversational and narrative comprehension. Similar deficits have been described in other brain-damaged populations such as individuals with traumatic brain injuries, early dementia, and some forms of aphasia. Taken together, deficits of discourse and social aspects of communication abilities show they depend upon the integrity of brain networks that are widely distributed over the brain. These deficits need to be better recognized and described with reference to the underlying cognitive processes involved in order to move toward a more efficient way of helping these individuals participate in society again.

Abstract:
A philosophical analysis of the nature of economic processes in the modern intellectual discourse is carried out in line with mosaic civilization transformations and the communication process as a fundamental translation of one language of activity into another. The result of such an operation is the personification of the linguistic reality of the form of socio-economic life of society, and the methodological basis of this approach is L. Wittgenstein’s idea of a natural language as the personification of a form of life, reflecting a stable system of linguistic and non-linguistic activity. The article substantiates the potential of the linguistic approach, which reveals the heuristic possibilities concerning the formation of meaning in the system of socio-economic knowledge. It is noted that the use of any language, including limiting its laws of syntax and vocabulary based on the practices and symbols, are not exhausted by any rules and become linguistic innovations. It is proved that the natural speech is published in the associated objects and situations but in the future it builds a categorical ordered system of values which referents becomes specified primary connection, which, in turn, uniquely combine choice means subjects with perceptive articulations and practical necessity. It was found that any code or an artificial language remains dependent on the existence of a natural language which allows us to determine from the side of the predication conditions the conditions of a person's access to the world. It is shown that the logical construction which are aimed at the relation of predicates and referents, as well as at the transition from sentence to proof, themselves, in turn, are tuned over more fundamental layers of the statement, which include initial statements and validity open for research.
