Abstract:
At a great protest meeting in Glasgow against Ultramontanism in 1874, the Jesuits, those wily chameleons, were acccused of masquerading as members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. That body was ostensibly to benefit the poor but it is in fact a religio-political organisation. It has local, central and general councils; quarterly meetings, conferences, fetes, pilgrimages; it has passports and circular letters to its members. It adapts itself to all classes and conditions - addresses itself to the scholar, the soldier, the mechanic, the apprentice, the labourer - to the mother and the daughter, for all of whom it issues a suitable publication.’

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the propositions of activism and prosocial public relations that an organization will engage in non-confrontational (prosocial) public relations and negotiation by building up internal resources, reaching out to target publics, and making connections to a cause to gain visibility and support. Design/methodology/approach This study was a single embedded case study that explored the public relations and communication tactics of a non-profit organization (NGO). Findings Observations from the case study support the proposition. This study begins to establish some of the public relations methods of how a successful prosocial NGO can successfully engage its publics through activism and negotiation. Research limitations/implications A single embedded case study is not generalizable to a population but is generalizable to theory so it is trustworthy and replicable when using a similar organization studying the same concepts in this paper. Practical implications An organization can reach out to publics through publicity, promotion, and information to raise the visibility of the organization and encourage active participation. The organization increased support for its cause and helped to establish the reputation of the organization as a legitimate, trustworthy and effective establishment. The study further uncovered nurturing relationships as an additional fourth element to the process of prosocial public relations. Social implications Activism, prosocial public relations and negotiation in corporate communications and in this case a non-profit can apply to increase well-being and society conditions. Originality/value This study is the only one of its kind to apply activism, prosocial public relations and negotiation theory to a practical case using a non-profit entity.

Abstract:
In advanced industrialized economies, charitable organizations work alongside formal social services provided through welfare states to assist people living in poverty. The work of charities with socially and economically marginalized people, however, often takes place in the absence of robust evidence about what impact charity has on people’s lives. This study draws on a large administrative database to investigate what determines repeat requests for charity and how people may achieve dignity. Our findings show that frequent residential address changes seem to make people more reliant on charity, whereas the more time spent with people receiving charity significantly decreases repeat requests for charity. We propose that the provision of charity can be an opportunity to promote connectedness.

Abstract:
The article deals with a public charity in Ivano-Frankivsk taken in historical retrospect and at the present stage. It is proved that the charitable activity in Ivano-Frankivsk (then Stanislaviv), which dates back to the 19-th century, is diverse (educational, medical, social). The city had a wide range of charitable organizations (Society of Christian Ladies, Society of St. Vincent and Paul, Society of Public Education, Bread for Hungry Children, Folk Kitchen, etc.), which organized various charity events ("Chocolate of Happiness", etc.) and assisted to all in need. In Stanislaviv, many institutions existed thanks to donations (Abraham Halpern Orphanage, Elderly and Disabled Orphanage, Brother Albert's Shelter, Isakovych Orphanage for boys, Mrochkovska Orphanage for ladies, etc.). In the post-war period, an important event of charitable activity was the foundation of the Ukrainian Red Cross and Red Crescent, and the Ukrainian Students' Charitable Foundation. It is investigated that the beginning of the 21-st century is marked by the rapid development of charitable foundations in Ukraine, including in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The mission and responsibilities of the organizations in Ivano-Frankivsk are clarified as educational ("Osvita Ivano-Frankivsk (Education Ivano-Frankivsk)", "Miy Universytet (My University)", "INTEGRO"); social ("Maty Tereza (Mother Teresa)" Charitable Foundation for the Terminally Ill, St. Panteleimon Charitable Foundation of Palliative Care Center, Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk UGCC Charitable Foundation, "Chysti sertsem (Pure Heart)" Charitable Foundation, "Nebaiduzhi (Not Indifferent)" Charitable Foundation, "Time for the goodness and mercy", "Community of St. Egidius", "Maltese Aid Service", "My city is Ivano-Frankivsk", Charitable Christian Foundation "Solidarnist (Solidarity)"); medical (Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Clinical Center for Palliative Care IF Hospice, Charitable Foundation "Ty anhel (You are Angel)", Charitable Foundation "Zavzhdy z toboiu (Always with You)"), etc. It is concluded that the charitable organizations in Ivano-Frankivsk are founded to provide the following services: educational, advisory, prognostic, organizational, educational (in the field of education); care, information and advisory, legal, humanitarian/financial/material assistance (in the social sphere); legal advice, pilot support, psychological and pedagogical assistance, financial assistance (fundraising for treatment, etc.) in the field of health care. We consider it promising to study the peculiarities of charitable organizations in different regions of Ukraine.

Father-absence occurs with unusual frequency among people of African descent in the Caribbean. Yet concern over possibly harmful effects of this condition to children and society which is most obvious in the United States is not informed by scientific findings from this region. The present study yielded no evidence that father-absence retards the aspiration or performance of secondary school students in St. Vincent, West Indies, although twelve different groupings of the available cases were analyzed. Findings from this and some American studies suggest that father-absence is not harmful if it is not strongly condemned by the culture with which youths identify.

Burnett, Kathryn J. "Public Relations for Prosocial Change: A Case Study of a Nonprofit Organization's Efforts to Gain Visibility and Support for its Cause." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3155.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the theory of prosocial public relations as proposed by Wakefield, Burnett, and van Dusen (2011). The propositions put forth by the theory are that in gaining visibility and support for prosocial causes, an organization will engage in non-confrontational (prosocial) public relations by building up internal resources, reaching out to target publics, and making connections with those publics related to the cause. This single-case study explored the public relations and communication tactics of a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide aid and service to the poor. A Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul located in the Western United States served as the case. Observations from this study were made through analysis of documentation and archival records and were supported through interviews with key staff members of the Society and field observations. The findings support the theory of prosocial public relations in that communication and public relations are vital aspects in the work of the nonprofit as it strives to gain visibility and support for the cause. Observations from the case study support that the Society builds up, reaches out, and connects with key publics. In addition, based on data, a fourth element of prosocial public relations, nurturing relationships, is proposed. This study begins to establish some of the public relations methods of how a successful prosocial nonprofit organization can build up, reach out, make connections, and nurture relationships through communication.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The promotion and empowerment of women is a recurrent theme in the society today. The history of the Catholic Church, from its very inception, has shown its indifference towards women due to the strong male representation in its institutions. In fact, the question of the promotion of women remained insignificant or rather a sensitive issue within the Church. The clergymen, anti-women by their attitude and with considerable power in the local administration, opposed all possible services by women in the church and in the society. The peak of this opposition, in our opinion, is situated towards the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century with the stringent imposition of cloister for women who tried to engage in social service together with their spiritual life. In the same way, in a society predominantly patriarchal, the woman's existence went almost unnoticed. Surprisingly, the intervention of Vincent de Paul and his collaboration with women opened up possibilities not only for their promotion but also for a change of attitude towards them in the Church and the society. With his clever interpretations of the laws of the Church, Vincent would succeed in bringing the woman out of cloister for the service of the poor at home, in hospitals and in the streets. The Confraternity of Charity founded in 1617, the Daughters of Charity founded in 1633 and the Confraternity of the Ladies of Charity at Hôtel-Dieu founded in 1634 remain as a visible and living history of the success of the promotion of woman by Vincent de Paul

The Asylum St. Vincent de Paul was established in 1909 in the city of Goiás, built at the initiative of the confreres in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which was created in France in the first half of the nineteenth century by Frederick Ozanam in. His goal was to create conferences Charity aimed at material and spiritual assistance to the poor. In Goiás, the ideal found fertile soil, and since 1885 held a number of charities, its members visited the jail and the hospital must provide food, clothing and living several poor who crowded the streets, alleys and villages of the former Vila Boa. To optimize the work, the Vincentians founded asylum, built in hygienic and pleasant place on the outskirts of the city. With the intention to house the indigent, poor, destitute, disabled, abandoned and sick of all sorts, asylum soon became the embodiment of the ideal of charity planted by Ozanam, and showcase for its members. Under the direction of internal Dominican Sisters, asylum has become a sacred space. Over time, several people who did not fit the profile of the inmates, aspired to enter the institution, where those who would watch. Donation of houses, money and aid from the influential people were found loopholes to achieve this intention. Our goal is to understand what accounted for the asylum for the three groups directly involved with it, namely, the Vincentians, the Handicapped, and the Dominican Sisters. Restricting the analysis to areas for these groups, we will analyze the real interests that are behind the construction of the asylum St. Vincent de Paul

Montgomery, Jacki. "Social impact through active participation : a case of an engaging cause marketing experience." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:67437.

Abstract:
Governments around the globe are failing to meaningfully address social crises, thereby placing additional pressure on non-profit organisations to meet increasing demands to care for those in need. One way by which non-profit organisations can galvanise more volunteer support and funding for their cause, is to enter into an alliance with a company or companies, and together create programs or initiatives to raise funds and awareness. Cause marketing is one such initiative, which also invites consumer involvement in varying degrees to help solve an issue or contribute to a cause. The past decade has seen the emergence of a more innovative form of cause marketing – one that requires a greater degree of consumer involvement, in particular their active participation in the initiative. Whilst there is a rich literature exploring commercial impacts of various cause marketing initiatives, there is very little research on the impacts to those consumers who actively participate in this more innovative form of cause marketing. This thesis contributes to the gap in the literature by exploring the direct and indirect impacts of active participation in a cause marketing initiative – on the participants themselves and more broadly on others. Using an interpretivist perspective, the researcher has undertaken a novel approach to qualitative methodology and analysis, and has drawn upon the literature of diverse fields such as psychology, social psychology, sports, tourism, social marketing, health and the non-profit sector. The case study chosen for this research was the cause marketing initiative: the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, which requires consumers’ active participation. Since it began in 2006 in Sydney, Australia, it has raised over AUD 49 million to fund the homeless services that St Vincent de Paul provides. Findings indicate that the impacts to the CEOs were considerable, particularly in the enhancement of human capital, mental health and social capital. ‘Compassion’ emerged as an unanticipated outcome. The ‘experience’ of the initiative was considered extremely important to the participants. Considerable positive change to CEOs’ social, eudaimonic and hedonic well-being was identified. Also noted were the examples provide by the CEOs of various changes (and potential impacts) to the well-being of their networks and the wider community.

Abstract:
This work seeks to make a reflection about Family on a sociological, theological and pastoral context, emphasizing what are the main incidences in each of the areas. Through a course by some contemporary Sociologists, allows to understand the way it is interpreted the concept of family outside the Christianism, and also in a biblical perspective, turning to some passages from the Old Testament and from the new Testament that refer to couple and family. In a second step, the course goes through the analysis of the preparatory documents of the church synods and the documents that resulted from them: Exhortation Familiaris Consortio and Amoris Laetitia, as well as their reception in the Church and in the society. In the third part, the text gives attention on familiar pastoral, giving focus to what it is in itself and what it implies, whether as preparation for marriage, whether after the realization of the sacrament, in the concrete experience, and as well, the challenges that are posed today to the family inserted in a plural and diversified society; and at last, we present some movements and groups that take care of the family's pastoral.

Abstract:
British people throughout the empire as well as at home envisaged themselves as ‘polite and commercial’. There could be no doubt of the commercial success of West Indian plantation islands, but were their societies polite? This chapter focuses on the efforts of an individual planter, Sir William Young (1725–88) to live to the highest ideals of politeness both in England and in the Caribbean, especially in the island of St Vincent, where he acquired extensive estates. For a time he undoubtedly succeeded, but early British settlement on St Vincent encountered problems that meant that Young and other planters could not extract resources from the island adequate to sustain their ambitions. Young ended his life as a debtor to the Crown on his St Vincent plantation rather than enjoying the eminence in English landed society and cultured circles to which he aspired.
