Abstract:
At a great protest meeting in Glasgow against Ultramontanism in 1874, the Jesuits, those wily chameleons, were acccused of masquerading as members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. That body was ostensibly to benefit the poor but it is in fact a religio-political organisation. It has local, central and general councils; quarterly meetings, conferences, fetes, pilgrimages; it has passports and circular letters to its members. It adapts itself to all classes and conditions - addresses itself to the scholar, the soldier, the mechanic, the apprentice, the labourer - to the mother and the daughter, for all of whom it issues a suitable publication.’

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the propositions of activism and prosocial public relations that an organization will engage in non-confrontational (prosocial) public relations and negotiation by building up internal resources, reaching out to target publics, and making connections to a cause to gain visibility and support. Design/methodology/approach This study was a single embedded case study that explored the public relations and communication tactics of a non-profit organization (NGO). Findings Observations from the case study support the proposition. This study begins to establish some of the public relations methods of how a successful prosocial NGO can successfully engage its publics through activism and negotiation. Research limitations/implications A single embedded case study is not generalizable to a population but is generalizable to theory so it is trustworthy and replicable when using a similar organization studying the same concepts in this paper. Practical implications An organization can reach out to publics through publicity, promotion, and information to raise the visibility of the organization and encourage active participation. The organization increased support for its cause and helped to establish the reputation of the organization as a legitimate, trustworthy and effective establishment. The study further uncovered nurturing relationships as an additional fourth element to the process of prosocial public relations. Social implications Activism, prosocial public relations and negotiation in corporate communications and in this case a non-profit can apply to increase well-being and society conditions. Originality/value This study is the only one of its kind to apply activism, prosocial public relations and negotiation theory to a practical case using a non-profit entity.

Abstract:
In advanced industrialized economies, charitable organizations work alongside formal social services provided through welfare states to assist people living in poverty. The work of charities with socially and economically marginalized people, however, often takes place in the absence of robust evidence about what impact charity has on people’s lives. This study draws on a large administrative database to investigate what determines repeat requests for charity and how people may achieve dignity. Our findings show that frequent residential address changes seem to make people more reliant on charity, whereas the more time spent with people receiving charity significantly decreases repeat requests for charity. We propose that the provision of charity can be an opportunity to promote connectedness.

Abstract:
The article deals with a public charity in Ivano-Frankivsk taken in historical retrospect and at the present stage. It is proved that the charitable activity in Ivano-Frankivsk (then Stanislaviv), which dates back to the 19-th century, is diverse (educational, medical, social). The city had a wide range of charitable organizations (Society of Christian Ladies, Society of St. Vincent and Paul, Society of Public Education, Bread for Hungry Children, Folk Kitchen, etc.), which organized various charity events ("Chocolate of Happiness", etc.) and assisted to all in need. In Stanislaviv, many institutions existed thanks to donations (Abraham Halpern Orphanage, Elderly and Disabled Orphanage, Brother Albert's Shelter, Isakovych Orphanage for boys, Mrochkovska Orphanage for ladies, etc.). In the post-war period, an important event of charitable activity was the foundation of the Ukrainian Red Cross and Red Crescent, and the Ukrainian Students' Charitable Foundation. It is investigated that the beginning of the 21-st century is marked by the rapid development of charitable foundations in Ukraine, including in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The mission and responsibilities of the organizations in Ivano-Frankivsk are clarified as educational ("Osvita Ivano-Frankivsk (Education Ivano-Frankivsk)", "Miy Universytet (My University)", "INTEGRO"); social ("Maty Tereza (Mother Teresa)" Charitable Foundation for the Terminally Ill, St. Panteleimon Charitable Foundation of Palliative Care Center, Caritas Ivano-Frankivsk UGCC Charitable Foundation, "Chysti sertsem (Pure Heart)" Charitable Foundation, "Nebaiduzhi (Not Indifferent)" Charitable Foundation, "Time for the goodness and mercy", "Community of St. Egidius", "Maltese Aid Service", "My city is Ivano-Frankivsk", Charitable Christian Foundation "Solidarnist (Solidarity)"); medical (Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Clinical Center for Palliative Care IF Hospice, Charitable Foundation "Ty anhel (You are Angel)", Charitable Foundation "Zavzhdy z toboiu (Always with You)"), etc. It is concluded that the charitable organizations in Ivano-Frankivsk are founded to provide the following services: educational, advisory, prognostic, organizational, educational (in the field of education); care, information and advisory, legal, humanitarian/financial/material assistance (in the social sphere); legal advice, pilot support, psychological and pedagogical assistance, financial assistance (fundraising for treatment, etc.) in the field of health care. We consider it promising to study the peculiarities of charitable organizations in different regions of Ukraine.

Father-absence occurs with unusual frequency among people of African descent in the Caribbean. Yet concern over possibly harmful effects of this condition to children and society which is most obvious in the United States is not informed by scientific findings from this region. The present study yielded no evidence that father-absence retards the aspiration or performance of secondary school students in St. Vincent, West Indies, although twelve different groupings of the available cases were analyzed. Findings from this and some American studies suggest that father-absence is not harmful if it is not strongly condemned by the culture with which youths identify.

Abstract:
Evangelization of the poor was the primary concern of Vincent de Paul and his companions. The Second Vatican Council recaptured the missionary spirit of the early Church and stated that the pilgrim Church is “missionary by its very nature”. The Church is born out of the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit sent by the Father. From the very beginning of the Congregation of the Mission, St. Vincent de Paul and his companions were simply called “Fathers of the Mission.” That means, as our Superior General Fr. Tomaž Mavrič pointed out, from the very beginning there was “a sense of dynamism, movement, going to the peripheries, not being caught in a state of stagnation” in our DNA. During the 43rd General Assembly, the members of the Congregation of the Mission committed themselves to support the Mission ad Gentes effort and reiterated the resolved to set apart at least one percent of confreres to this mission every year and strengthened their commitment to bring the Gospel to all people. Mission and evangelisation in this sense is one of the fundamental qualities of the Congregation of the Mission. Without recapturing this original spirit of “being sent to the nations,” we cannot attain a complete and meaningful revitalisation of our Vincentian identity.

The original term the ‘woman’s genius’ by St. John Paul II, contained in the letter Mulieris dignitatem and his other documents, accurately defines spirituality and the proper role of women in the Church and society. It can be a hermeneutical key when studying the figures of saints and outstanding women, including the Servant of God, Jadwiga Zamoyska. As the participation of women in the triple mission of Christ: priestly, prophetic and kingly, the ‘woman’s genius’ manifests itself in various ways. We find its fullness in Mary.

ABSTRACT: When people believe that social particularities raise plurality of views in the contemporary society, Badiou introduces the idea of the universality of the singular subject with the aim of overcoming the so-called global village without solidarity. This article is a description of Badious thought, which is included in the line of thinkers which moves "small boat of thought" to the subject and the subjectivity of human. In the first section, I will outline Badious view about the problem of homogenization, followed by his view of Christianity as an event, which will lead us to his view on the universal singularity that is rooted in the proclamation of St. Paul. At the end, I will propose a critical note on his views in comparison with some philosophers who also spoke about St. Paul. This paper will be closed with a conclusion on the significance of Badious thought, in the context of contemporary society's pluralism, especially in Indonesia. Abstract:
The focus of this article is the problem of identity of the Catholics in the urban city of Malang. Based on observation and discussion with the Catholics in the St. Christophers’ neighbourhood, St. Vincent de Paul Parish of Langsep, has come up to an idea that people in the city are individualistic. The writer presumes that today globalization of the cities affects the way of thinking of the Catholics. The people practice their religious duties as far as such activities do not disturb their business. On the other hand, the spirit of urban societies is so dynamic in line with the spirit of the times. Every citizen seems to be motivated by the condition to adapt him-/herself within the progress of the age. In this urban rhythm the Catholics in the neigbourhood feel oblige to protect themselves from these influences and then strive to keep themselves away from the noise of the city. As the minority group, they seem to be reluctant to associate with the majority, since it may disturb their comfort. This is practically their challenge, how to open their exclusiveness and build a communio of the faithfuls who go forth and engage in dialogue with people of other faiths dan with the local culture.

The paper discusses the teachings and legislation of St John Paul II on human life and its legal protection. The Pope’s attitude to abortion, euthanasia and the death penalty was subjected to closer analysis. The author also points out that the legal protection of human life in the teachings and ecclesiastical documents is closely related to the essence of democracy. According to John Paul II, the “moral” value of democracy is not automatic, but depends on conformity to the moral law. In such a society, civil law must ensure that all members of society enjoy respect for certain fundamental rights which innately belong to the person. First and fundamental among these is the inviolable right to life of every human being from the moment of conception.

Pasternak’s involvement with Jean Paul, an author he had no thematical affinity with, looks intriguing. Besides, the history of Pasternak’s cooperation with Academia is being clarified — from the emergence of the publishing house in 1921 until its closure in 1937. Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse facial similarity and apply it to identify the individuals depicted in the mural paintings of the apse of St. Leocadia Church, located in Chaves Municipality (North of Portugal), which were painted during the first quarter of the 16th century. This study also compares the portraits of this mural paintings with the oil paintings by the Proto-Renaissance Portuguese painter Nuno Gonçalves. Through this research, the feasibility of face recognition technology is explored to answer many ambiguities about Manueline stylistic identity and iconography. Additionally, it aims to associate historical events, artistic discoveries, and the expansion of portraiture as propaganda of power during the Portuguese Proto-Renaissance and Early Renaissance. On the other hand, it focuses on the prevalence of the religious and devotional over the sacred in Manueline painting. A proposal was made to identify the characters that are fundamental to the meaning of the mural paintings. An experiment was conducted on seven characters from the paintings at St. Leocadia Church, which were then compared to Nuno Gonçalves’ portraits. Facial similarity analysis was conducted on the faces portrayed in the Panels of St. Vincent, a remarkable portrait gallery from 15th-century Portugal, which has been the subject of national and international research for 130 years. Other paintings that were analysed were the oil paintings of St. Peter and St. Paul and of Infanta St. Joana, which were created by the same Quattrocento master. The purpose of the mural paintings of St. Leocadia Church could be catechetical in nature or related to the ritual practices of royal ancestor worship in royal portrait apses of the churches. It could also be associated with the Portuguese maritime expansion and the macro-imperial ideology of D. Manuel I.

Updating regulations from SNI 1726 – 2012 to SNI 1726 – 2019 allows evaluation of the behavior and performance of building structures to reduce the risks posed by earthquakes. This is necessary because in SNI 1726-2019 there is an additional long period in the spectrum response so it is necessary to evaluate it to ensure that the building structure whose behavior still meets the requirements in the regulation. The method used in this study was the pushover analysis method. This study evaluates the St. Catholic Hospital Medical Services building. Vincent a. Paul (RKZ) Surabaya. This study discusses building analysis based on SNI 1726 - 2019 to determine the behavior and performance of structures. The results of this study indicate that the behavior of the structure which includes the time period, base shear force, drift ratio, dual system control meets the requirements in accordance with SNI 1726-2019. This performance level is included in the LS (Life Safety) category.

Abstract:
In the paper, several well-known passages from the Epistles of the Apostle Paul are studied that raise the women’s issue in Corinth and still cause many discrepancies and contradictory assessments from masculine bias and chauvinism in early Christian preaching to St Paul’s personal misogyny. The author shows that these places should be interpreted as a continuation of the Corinthian sermons of the Apostle, deliberately composed by Paul in the context of non-Christian Greco-Roman culture of Corinth revived by Julius Cæsar. At the heart of this Corinthian culture, there was the famous temple of Aphrodite, sacred prostitution and the exquisitely hedonistic hetæras society.

Abstract:
To get to the Cunard Street Theatre you have to go into an area of Halifax that many locals prefer to avoid. From the downtown area, you travel up Duke Street, until you turn right at the police station that looks like a brick Gestapo headquarters. You cruise down Gottingen Street, past Buckley’s Music Shop with its barred windows protecting baby grands, past the St. Vincent de Paul shop with its statue of the patron saint, his fist vainly attempting to clutch a missing crucifix, and past the amusement hall where the kids gather to breakdance in the summertime. Cunard Street intersects Gottingen across from the deserted Tap Beverage Room, where Trevor Berbick one sparred for uninterested, unbelieving onlookers. The theatre sits beside an empty bank building and its yawning parking lot. Cunard Street Theatre looks like the Salvation Army building it once was: squat, solid and unimaginative. The whole area appears to be devoid of life, like the theatre community in Halifax that the new building waits to serve.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the career of two Sister-Principals who began their religious life in the same congregation: Mother Mary Edward (Catherine) McKinley and Mother Mary of Providence (Catherine) Horan. Depending on whose version of history you read, these women were rival religious or virtuous sisters in habit. Drawing on archival sources and their own writings, the paper analyzes the perceptions, in their own words, of the experiences Mother Mary Edward McKinley and Mother Mary of Providence Horan as Sister-Principals. It also provides an assessment of the historical significance of their careers as case studies of Sister-Principals. The careers of the two Sister-Principals reveal much: both members of the Sisters of Providence of Vincent de Paul (Kingston), both committed to the social welfare of the poor, both forced unwillingly to be Sister-Principals; both elected as congregational leaders; both memorialized in the public domain as powerful women leaders.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of media communication constitutes one of the essential characteristics of society. Without communication, society could not function. The Church cannot avoid the use of means of communication, for the simple reason that its mission is masterfully described by St. Apostle Paul who says: ". . . I have become all things to all, that I may save some." (1 Cor 9, 22). Therefore, an essential aspect of media communication in the Church is to make ourselves understood by the audience as well as possible. In this context, we will analyze what are the demands of cultural-missionary communication, so that the cultural and missionary values of the Church fulfill the meaning of their existence.

Abstract:
Objective Religious behaviors are considered as complex brain-based phenomena that may be associated with structural brain change. To identify the pattern of regional brain volume change in nuns, we investigated structural alterations in the brains of nuns using a fast processing automated segmentation method based on deep learning algorithms. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the catholic sisters between the ages of 31 and 80 who are members of the charity of St. Vincent de Paul of Korea. A total of 193 asymptomatic subjects (86 nuns and 107 control subjects) received comprehensive health screening and underwent brain MRI scans. We compared cortical and sub-cortical volume between groups across multiple locations using our in-house U-Net++ deep learning-based automatic segmentation tool. Results Compared to the control group, the nun group displayed increased gray matter volume in the right lingual cortex, left isthmus-cingulate, posterior-cingulate, rostral-middle-frontal, superior-frontal, supramarginal, temporal-pole cortices, and bilateral pars-triangularis cortices after correction for multiple comparisons. On the other hand, the nun group showed reduced gray matter volume in the temporal and parietal regions relative to healthy controls. Conclusion Our study suggests that spiritual practice may affect brain structure, especially in several frontal regions involved in a higher level of insight function.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This essay aims to complicate and question the pervasive image of James Joyce, and his own self-image, as "[u]nfellowed, friendless and alone," by looking at the role of friends and friendship in Joyce's life and in the lives of his major self-portraits, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. I examine Joyce's relationship with his most important friends, such as Vincent Cosgrave, J. F. Byrne, Oliver St. John Gogarty, Frank Budgen, Samuel Beckett, Paul Léon, and others—notably a number of women, including Sylvia Beach, Maria Jolas, and Harriet Shaw Weaver. Those relationships were complex, as are the friendships in Joyce's fiction. In A Portrait , Davin, for example, says that Stephen is "[a]lways alone," yet in Lynch and Cranly he has close friends. In Ulysses , the friendships with Mulligan and Lynch are notably strained. But while Stephen is cynical about friends and, by extension, friendship, it is Bloom who is, in fact, apparently without any close friends: he seems to have only acquaintances (like Molly as well, for that matter). Yet Bloom and Stephen form a bond that, although it is hard to define and almost certainly temporary, seems to bring a measure of comfort to both of them.

Abstract:
This article is a presentation of St. John Chrysostom’s social teaching on the value of work. This teaching is grounded in the Holy Scriptures. By describing Christ and certain biblical figures (e.g. St. Paul) as people of work, Chrysostom underscores the meaning and value of labor. He does so contrary to the opinion of the wealthy in the Antioch society, who despised both the physical labor and the people performing it. In the teaching of the Archbishop of Constantinople, physical work is a cooperation with God in the effort of transforming the world. It is an element which ennobles a human being, provides him with the means necessary to support his life and enabling him to undertake the works of mercy. St. John also highlightsthe difficult situation of many peasants, craftsmen and merchants, and in this way he tries to direct the attention of the wealthy to this social problem. It can be deduced from Chrysostom’s writing that the life of slaves, which constituted a large portion of the late antique society, was generally modest and filled with work – especially the most onerous one. In giving instructions to slaves, St. John admonishes them to be submissive to their masters and do their work well. In speaking to the masters, however, he recommended that their relationships with slaves were humanitarian and shaped according to the Gospel. It is noteworthy to see that the element of love of one’s neighbor (philanthropy) and forgiving mercy brought new quality into the social structures of the time, especially between a master and a slave.

Abstract:
The article examines the problem of risk reflections design based on the interpretation of risks and threats as a way of social order legitimization. Authors analyze the “cleavage” nature (in the terminology of Lipset — Rokkan approach) of the consequences of these designing. Using Paul Slovic “psychometric paradigm”, theory of “sociocultural viability” by Aaron Wildavsky and Karl Dake, Paul Schoemaker expected utility model, prospect theory by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman, Vincent Covello “mental noise” approach and Mary Douglas works on main risk cultural types, the authors suggest that, despite their heuristic capacity all these approaches, modeling of probable risk reflections is impossible without examination of the current political agenda, formal and informal practices of interpreting dangers and threats in public political discourse, as well as political goal-setting and elites intentions. These elements can weaken/strengthen, shift/replace risk reflections, which is critical for identifying key social polarizations (“cleavages”) between “risk beneficiaries” and “risk outsiders”. In this context, the article focuses to “administrative” failures in political risk management, the victim of which is often the whole society, but not just those who were originally nominated as consumers of risk. On the basis of the identified structural, actor-oriented and institutional factors of risk decision-making and the strategies for programming risk reflections by dominant risk producers, the authors conclude that errors in the design of risk reflections generate risk-anomie in the most vulnerable groups of the population.

Abstract:
Records in private collections of rural dwellers are a significant source of information that remains untapped for ethnohistoric reconstruction. This study uses a little more than a hundred items, mainly house lot rental receipts. It starts by describing how the author was able to access the documents and overcome challenges in extracting the data. It follows with the contribution of the data to understanding house lot tenure in terms of the payment practices by villagers and the system of public lands administration; the overlap among kinship, lot tenure, and residence; and some anecdotes on the village community as part of the larger colonial society of 20th century Belize. In its analysis the paper shows that the Garifuna people are an ideal group for the study of lot tenure, having been formed through violent struggles for their lands in St. Vincent and their recurring forced movements by authorities within their communities in Central America. Finally, the data points to the critical role of women in assuming possession of house lots through de facto residence and exercising headship over household members.

Abstract:
This issue of Clinical Social Work and Health Intervention is dedicated to decea- sed co-founder of our Journal and President of the International Society of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine, Director of the First Department of Peri- natal Psychology and Medicine, Honorary Doctor and holder of Honorary Degrees and Medals of multiple Universities in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Malaysia, etc, Doctor of Medicine and Psychology and Editor in chief of four Medical Journ- als: Acta Neurosa Superioris Rediviva, Neuroendocrinology Letters, Clinical Social Work and Health Intervention and Int. Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine (1-4). Together with his spouse Lili Maas, ArtD., who added to the exact science, arts and her heart and love, all of those Journals were not only reading of naked facts and theories, or science but both were teaching us to accept psycho- logy, social work and medicine as art culture and love, what is more than science and knowledge, more than facts. (From the letter of St. Paul and two letters of St. Peter, New Testament)
