Close to the turn of the century and almost 45 years after Independence, India opened its doors to free-market liberalization. Although meant as the promise to a better economic tomorrow, three decades later, many feel betrayed by the economic changes ushered in by this new financial era. Here is a book that probes whether India’s economic reforms have aided the development of Indian Muslims who have historically been denied the fruits of economic development. Abstract The ‘Gaeltacht’ has come to signify several related, but different, realities for Irish people. For some it is exactly what the word literally means, that is, an area in which Irish is spoken. For others, it is an area of economic underdevelopment, depopulation, and backwardness. For yet others it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Finally, in the domain of state management, the Gaeltacht is a distinct regional unit, with separate policies and institutional structures. All of these perspectives interact with each other in complex ways that have changed over time. This chapter w

Recently, some French socio-economic historians, instead of emphasizing change, have substituted the idea of so-called ‘immobile history’, or ‘history that stands still’.’ They argue th
