Abstract:
How does trade liberalization affect the welfare of the people? This paper attempts to answer the issue in the context of Indonesia by examining the socio-economics, environmental, and health impacts of trade liberalization in Indonesia. In this study, we focus on the consequences of tariff reform as the main instrument of trade liberalization on three specific measures: income inequality, air pollution, and child mortality rates. In all three empirical studies, we define tariff reform as reductions in the national average nominal (unweighted) import tariffs of tradable goods. The national

The narratives about the postexilic Judean community are an ancient biblical account of the socio-economic and political experiences of the Judeans when they were finally restored back to Judah from Babylonian captivity. Although the Judean restoration was celebrated when they were restored by King Cyrus’ decree, real freedom did not prevail in the Persian province of Yehud; corruption, usury, greed, oppression, enslavement and loss of property impacted negatively on the poor. The leadership expropriated from poor citizens land, vineyards, and houses in exchange for food. In addition, th

Abstract:
The thesis offers new paradigms for advancing socio-economic rights in Africa. Many States Parties to human rights instruments have failed to promote the common welfare of their citizens partly because of the justiciability debate, which continues to complicate intellectual and practical efforts at advancing socio-economic rights. The debate also prevents the normative development of these rights through adjudication. Furthermore, traditional human rights theory and practice have been state-centric, with non-state actors largely ignored in the identification, formulation, and implementation of
