Abstract:
It very well may be said that American Literature may have started in 1493 when Columbus composed his acclaimed letters to King Ferdinand of Spain. Different travellers and explorers, who followed, composed letters to their companions and family members at home. These 'letters home' mark the start of the put down account of the threats they needed to confront, yet in addition to the marvels that should have been seen all over. The interest was energized at home in light of these letters. The letters gave reasonable and striking records. An ever increasing number of individuals were enticed to cruise for the New World to settle there. Such courageous spirits came not from England alone, yet these spirits originated from most different nations of Europe-Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, and numerous others. Along these lines, there established the framework of the 'solidarity in decent variety' which is such a noticeable element of American culture.

Abstract:
Previous literature is laden with research on Browning’s dramatic monologues from various perspectives. This paper will compare Browning’s dramatic monologues with Derwesh Durrani’s poetry from socio-literary perspective. Literary theories of analogy and variation will be used to find out similarities and differences in their poetry. Two poems from each poet have been selected for analysis through close reading technique on the model of theories of variation and analogy. Stratified sampling technique was used for taking the representative sample from the data. The findings reveals that Darwesh’s poetry exhibits most of the dramatic features of Browning’s dramatic monologues, but his poetry is more poetic, while Browning’s poetry is more dramatic; Browning invigorates the past, Darwesh recreates the present. In addition, Browning’s poems deals with domestic issues like gender violence, love and marriage, Darwesh’s poetry deals with social issues and patriotism, and contrary to Browning, he stands for women’s rights and sensibilities. This paper suggests further studies purely from socio-cultural perspective of Darwesh’s dramatic monologues, which will contribute to the existing literature on dramatic monologues.

Abstract:
Abstract This is a participant-interpreter study of how issues of loyalty, ethics and ideology condition the action of a literary translator. A case-study is presented of the author’s socio-ethical dilemmas and decisions while translating Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian literature into English during the 1990s. This aims both to contribute to the socio-cultural historiography of that period and to illustrate how a literary translator might perform in settings of acute socio-cultural conflict. The case-study observations are then used to explore the nature of the literary translator as a textual and social actor. The “constrained autonomy” of the literary translator is seen as having several key implications. Among these are: that all translating acts have ethical and socio-political repercussions; that partiality informed by awareness of the demands of the wider social web may often be a more appropriate stance than neutrality; that the power structures within which the literary translator acts are more important than target language or translating strategy per se in determining source-culture representation, and that time/workload/chance factors may also play a role here; and that confronting Derrida’s indécidable is a defining feature of translator autonomy.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of transferring literary culture from previous generations to “Generation Z”. A brief description of this generation is presented from the perspective of the theory of generations by American researchers Neil Hove and William Strauss. The topic of children’s reading for generations of the 20th century is briefly covered. By the example of the reading repertoire of children and teenagers, works of literary classics and actual children’s literature, the article shows the process of gradual weakening of the transfer of values of literary culture from generation to generation. The materials of complex and sociological research, conducted by the Russian State Children’s Library at the beginning of the 21st century, highlight the problems of reading the best literature that traditionally has been included in the reading of generations. The results of research given in the article testify to the process of losing the nearly century-old literary tradition. For instance, this problem can be seen in the example of parents choosing books for children of primary and secondary school age. In many ways, the repertoire of reading literary classics by children and adolescents is formed by school: this is the school curriculum and lists of extracurricular reading. The interest of schoolchildren in classical literature and in books of previous generations continues to fall. The process of changing the repertoire of leisure reading in adolescents is shown. The repertoire of their reading is significantly fragmented. This is largely due to trends in the development of book publishing and the spread of literature. The article indicates the pros and cons of adolescents’ reading, caused by new information technologies; shows the influence of these technologies on reading literacy and reading culture. The process of literature selection by adolescents, boys and girls, is illustrated basing on the results of another new study. It is shown that the choice of schoolchildren is largely random and contains works of modern literature with a predominance of fantasy genre books. The research results demonstrate that today the main factors that have a significant impact on the choice of literature for teenagers and young people are video production and peers’ advice. Solving the problem of supporting reading and forming a reading circle of “Generation Z” schoolchildren, in the context of literary tradition attenuation, is a difficult task to be accomplished by competent adult mentors together with adolescents and young people themselves.

Kanaouti, Sophia. "Social value of literary reading : reading as socio-political practice." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54261/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to illustrate the links between literary reading, social agency and social change using a Cultural Studies approach that addresses the construction of the literary reader in the English and Greek context in the twentieth century. Via Althusser's notion of the Ideological State Apparatuses and Balibar and Macherey's views of literary reading exerting power over the reader, the thesis questions notions of literature as an institution of suppression. It uses Williams's and Bennett's work, which address the reader in more emancipating terms and attempts to move beyond even these writers' work, theorising the existence of three types of literature reader, connected with education as a social institution. These are the adequate reader, the dependent reader, and the performing reader. Reading as performance addresses social change. Linking the reader's experience of the text with the understanding of language and following from that the state of being conscious of the experience of social reality, the thesis recognises a relationship between Williams's structures of feeling, Althusser's notion of the imaginary relationship of the person with her conditions of existence, and Aristotle's contention that the product of imagination (phantasmd) is needed in order for the person to understand; starting from them, it theorises what it calls historical imagination, as the imaginary reality that takes on the validity of history (of something that is believed to have happened beyond doubt) in the minds of the readers. The importance of language as a social parameter of access is underlined by the examination of official documents regarding literary educational policy and assessment, spanning the twentieth century. Lastly and very importantly, Bhabha's work on what he called a 'third space', together with Hall's 'arbitrary closure' and hooks's notion of negotiation leading to 'repositioning' are also used; thus the thesis sees reading as a 'third space' of negotiation, which encourages re-negotiation and re-positioning.

Abstract:
The present work aims at looking at the figure of the vampire in literature as powerful means of reading and interpreting the fears and anxieties of a specific socio-cultural space. By looking at the evolution of the literary vampire through the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we are able to notice that each of its incarnations dramatically differs from the previous one, and as vampires are reinvented, they engage in a coherent dialog with issues pertaining to their times, in a way that they never lose their relevance. Their heterogeneous existence, explicited in the dissertation primarily through Sheridan LeFanus Carmilla, Bram Stokers Dracula, Richard Mathesons I am Legend, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire and Octavia Butlers Fledgling, and the different theoretical questions brought on by each of them such as sexuality, alterity and hybridity will lead us to the understanding that the vampire may potentially function as a powerful allegory as it becomes a mirror of the very humanity on which its life depends

Abstract:
Bibliography: p. 171-181.
This study is done from the periphery and designs a socio-literary model for the socio-political interpretation of the seven prophetic messages in the Apocalypse of St. John. The main function of the model is to highlight the author of Revelation's socio-political position in relation to the groups in society and the church, as well as John's socio-political aims. The secondary functions are to accentuate the groups involved within Revelation's context, their social characteristics, as well as their socio-political position in relation to one another and John's position towards them. The model attempts to show how John involves religion in the political arena as a means to influence his readers' construction of social reality. It further aims to contribute in our search into the socio-historical context and social function of Revelation. The design of the model is an endeavor to participate in the methodological debate regarding future research on Revelation. The model designed is the product of a synthesis of various socio-literary models. This study's contribution to the synthesis model is four fold. Firstly, the synthesis model is made applicable to the Apocalypse of John. Secondly, it adds to the synthesis model a primary rhetorical dimension and argues that Revelation is a piece of primary rhetoric. In primary rhetoric the rhetoric determines the literary techniques and constructions employed by the author of a text. On the basis of the work done by Collins (1979:104), this model attempts to specify the literary function of Revelation in more detail than was done before. Thirdly, this model builds on the work of Carney (1975:xvii,309)) and Elliott (1986:18f), and emphasizes the advantages of using the broadest possible socio-historical background. Fourthly, it strives to provide a scientific paradigm for studying the text from the perspective of the oppressed.

Gupta, Nijay K. "Worship that makes sense : a cognitive and socio-literary approach to the theology of Paul's non-atonement cultic metaphors." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1351/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Paul's use of temple, priesthood, and (non-atonement) sacrificial metaphors from a cognitive and socio-literary perspective. The final conclusion of a number of scholars in this area of research is that Paul's cultic metaphors have the theological and rhetorical purpose of encouraging community formation and moral living. Such evaluations, however, often take place without paying sufficient attention to the complexity of Paul's cultic imagery as well as, from a methodological standpoint, what metaphors are and how they are used in thinking and communicating. Utilising the tools and insights of conceptual metaphor theory, this study seeks to approach this topic afresh by attending to how metaphors constitute a necessary platform of cognition. Thus, they have world-constructing and perception-transforming utility. In this study, we conclude that, far from being merely about ethics or ecclesiology, Paul's cultic metaphors act as vehicles for communicating his ineffable theology. Indeed, his use f such tropes illuminate such broad areas as his anthropology, pneumatology, and epistemology, as well as his understanding of holiness, purity, judgment, suffering, death, and obedience to God. By anchoring his converts' new experiences in Christ to the world of ancient cult, and its familiar set of terms and concepts, he was attempting to re-describe reality and develop a like-minded community of faith by articulating logike latreia - 'worship that makes sense' (Romans 12.1).

Full text
Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
The minithesis provides a detailed socio-political and literary analysis of A Walk in the Night: Seven stories from the streets of Cape Town. It investigates and systematically compares each short story to the novella or compares the short stories with each other and shows their thematic and formal similarities and differences. The results of the study will provide a valuable contribution to the study of African literature. It will complete what other critics have left out. No one among La Guma’s scholars has analysed the anthology as a single entity; most critics have analysed the novella and have not analysed the accompanying short stories. As a result, the relationships between the novella and the short stories are unknown to many readers. I argue that this needs to be corrected. In order to situate the thesis, the study also presents a selected list of critics who have studied the novella and the short stories, and indicates their achievements and their shortcomings. The study will be carried out from a Marxist perspective, and will explore the use of realist and naturalist literary styles. Marxism will provide the socio-political and theoretical framework. Naturalism and realism are the two main literary genres that occur in the anthology.

Abstract:
We chose to examine how fictional literature is used in education because we believe that fictional literature can aid learning and be used in many different aspects of education. We share a mutual interest in fictional literature and wanted to see how it is being used in the classrooms. The goal was to gain insight into how teachers, as well as students, are using fictional literature, their thoughts about the subject, and if the teacher´s and student´s views correspond. To gain this information we chose to conduct qualitative interviews with eight teachers, one librarian, and one hundred students. The results show how the teachers implement fictional literature in their education, as well as their view on how it could be used further. We also compiled information from the students in regard to both using fictional literature in the classroom as well as how they use it at home. The analysis show that fictional literature is used when learning Swedish and that the focus is on reading aloud. The students mostly view fictional literature positively and would like to see more of it in their learning. The teachers reported that they would like to use it more as well, but that lack of time prevents them from doing so.

Abstract:
Abstract The events unfolding in Syria since spring 2011 have led to a thorough transformation of the intellectual and artistic space in which Syrian authors, filmmakers, and artists move. Starting from an overview of the connections of institutions, artists, and works that form this contemporary space of cultural production, this chapter goes on to consider the problems existing theoretical conceptions of such spaces from the sociology of arts encounter when faced with the empirical realities of the Syrian case. It shows that the transnational, unstable, and often transient nature of these formations and their links with large-scale socio-political changes, such as wars, are difficult to grasp with conceptual toolkit developed on the model of the unusually stable spaces of production of Western Europe and the US.

Abstract:
Historically, children’s literature awards have been established both to improve the quality of children’s literature and to promote the market for children’s books. Today, an international prize for literature can be seen as a socio-political game with the aim of disseminating specific values and sharing various ideas that seem relevant to a society. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the most generous children’s literature award in monetary terms – and, at the same time, one of the largest literary awards. The study examines the details and choices of ALMA nomination, provides a brief insight into the problems of the awarding phenomenon, as well as considers ALMA in the context of Latvian book publishing.

Haiawi, Maryam. "Das Oratorium im Spannungsfeld der Konfessionen: Zum interkonfessionellen Austausch von Oratorien im 18. Jahrhundert." In Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung 2019. Abstract:
The present study deals with interconfessional exchange of oratorios in German-speaking countries during the 18th century. In doing so, it pursues the goal of focusing on the question of the denominational or non-denominational nature of the sacred music genre, a question that has so far been insufficiently discussed in musicological and literary research. It analyses selected oratorios between 1715 and 1781 which were written at important contemporary musical locations and were received interdenominationally (Hamburg, Leipzig, Brunswick, Catholic imperial court of Vienna, Catholic Saxon court at Dresden). The study comes to the conclusion that the oratorio of the 18th century was not defined solely by its denominational orientation, but influenced by a number of other factors reflecting the intellectual-historical upheavals of the Age of Enlightenment: contemporary musical aesthetics, socio-cultural developments (middle-class concert business), and fundamental religious-historical dynamics that led to a distancing from dogma and to a change in piety practice.

Abstract:
Cityspace has been the topic of urban and cultural studies for at least two decades and has opened a variety of ways to approach the city, from historical and cultural perspectives to socio-geographical, economic, religious, literary, postmodernist, post-colonial and, more recently, geo-critical ones. The article looks at the European and American city from the 1970s to the present through the lenses offered by the theoretical approaches by Edward Soja, David Harvey, Michel Foucault, Frederick Jameson, Bertrand Westphal, Manuel Castells, among others, while highlighting the specific characteristics of cityspace and citizenship, the use and misuse of living and imagined spaces in the period mentioned above. The shift from the modern city to the postmodern metropolis and global megalopolis has entailed essential changes in the views on cityspace both from the architectural perspective and from the city dweller’s perception of space in the city. How these changes have affected our lives and what the city of the future will look like are two core questions this article attempts to answer.

Abstract:
One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.
