Full textThe present work aims at looking at the figure of the vampire in literature as powerful means of reading and interpreting the fears and anxieties of a specific socio-cultural space. By looking at the evolution of the literary vampire through the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we are able to notice that each of its incarnations dramatically differs from the previous one, and as vampires are reinvented, they engage in a coherent dialog with issues pertaining to their times, in a way that they never lose their relevance. Their heterogeneous existence, explicited in the dissertation primarily through Sheridan LeFanus Carmilla, Bram Stokers Dracula, Richard Mathesons I am Legend, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire and Octavia Butlers Fledgling, and the different theoretical questions brought on by each of them such as sexuality, alterity and hybridity will lead us to the understanding that the vampire may potentially function as a powerful allegory as it becomes a mirror of the very humanity on which its life depends

Full textThis study is done from the periphery and designs a socio-literary model for the socio-political interpretation of the seven prophetic messages in the Apocalypse of St. John. The main function of the model is to highlight the author of Revelation's socio-political position in relation to the groups in society and the church, as well as John's socio-political aims. The secondary functions are to accentuate the groups involved within Revelation's context, their social characteristics, as well as their socio-political position in relation to one another and John's position towards them. The model attempts to show how John involves religion in the political arena as a means to influence his readers' construction of social reality. It further aims to contribute in our search into the socio-historical context and social function of Revelation. The design of the model is an endeavor to participate in the methodological debate regarding future research on Revelation. The model designed is the product of a synthesis of various socio-literary models. This study's contribution to the synthesis model is four fold. Firstly, the synthesis model is made applicable to the Apocalypse of John. Secondly, it adds to the synthesis model a primary rhetorical dimension and argues that Revelation is a piece of primary rhetoric. In primary rhetoric the rhetoric determines the literary techniques and constructions employed by the author of a text. On the basis of the work done by Collins (1979:104), this model attempts to specify the literary function of Revelation in more detail than was done before. Thirdly, this model builds on the work of Carney (1975:xvii,309)) and Elliott (1986:18f), and emphasizes the advantages of using the broadest possible socio-historical background. Fourthly, it strives to provide a scientific paradigm for studying the text from the perspective of the oppressed.

Full textThe minithesis provides a detailed socio-political and literary analysis of A Walk in the Night: Seven stories from the streets of Cape Town. It investigates and systematically compares each short story to the novella or compares the short stories with each other and shows their thematic and formal similarities and differences. The results of the study will provide a valuable contribution to the study of African literature. It will complete what other critics have left out. No one among La Guma’s scholars has analysed the anthology as a single entity; most critics have analysed the novella and have not analysed the accompanying short stories. As a result, the relationships between the novella and the short stories are unknown to many readers. I argue that this needs to be corrected. In order to situate the thesis, the study also presents a selected list of critics who have studied the novella and the short stories, and indicates their achievements and their shortcomings. The study will be carried out from a Marxist perspective, and will explore the use of realist and naturalist literary styles. Marxism will provide the socio-political and theoretical framework. Naturalism and realism are the two main literary genres that occur in the anthology.

Full textWe chose to examine how fictional literature is used in education because we believe that fictional literature can aid learning and be used in many different aspects of education. We share a mutual interest in fictional literature and wanted to see how it is being used in the classrooms. The goal was to gain insight into how teachers, as well as students, are using fictional literature, their thoughts about the subject, and if the teacher´s and student´s views correspond. To gain this information we chose to conduct qualitative interviews with eight teachers, one librarian, and one hundred students. The results show how the teachers implement fictional literature in their education, as well as their view on how it could be used further. We also compiled information from the students in regard to both using fictional literature in the classroom as well as how they use it at home. The analysis show that fictional literature is used when learning Swedish and that the focus is on reading aloud. The students mostly view fictional literature positively and would like to see more of it in their learning. The teachers reported that they would like to use it more as well, but that lack of time prevents them from doing so.

Full textKim, Bo Hyun. "Métis et Métèque : postures littéraires chez Linda Lê et Henri Lopes." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020STRAC009.
Full textThis thesis aims to examine the literary itinerary of two writers, Henri Lopes and Linda Lê. It uses the concept of posture to explain the process in which the two writers present themselves as Métis (half-breed) and Métèque (metic, alien), respectively. First of all, through the concept of posture, I analyze the writer both as a body that is subject to the social influence, interiorizing the sociolinguistic habitus, and as an agent that is situated in the literary institution, interacting with political, editorial and media spaces; the two writers build, by adjustments, their auctorial image which is coherent with and relevant to their biographical facts. Secondly, their literary projects tend to participate, through the autofictional practices, in this process of postural construction, especially by staging the protagonists who resemble their own authors. These two writers converge with one another in validating, in their novels, a series of persecutions and of compensations, as existential experiences of their protagonists, representing the métis and the métèque
Lévêque-Fougre, Mélanie. "En passant par la Lorraine : poétique et milieu socio-littéraire des trouvères lorrains du XIIIe au début du XIVe siècle." Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040177.
Full textLyrical poetry from Lorraine is highly prized in the thirteenth and the early first half of the fourteenth centuries. The Buffer area located between the Kingdom of France and the Germanic Empire, Lorraine has almost the same border as the duchy of Haute-Lotharingie. Trouvères who live in this area speak the same French language, share the same culture and have similar political ambitions. All of these points bring them closer to France, even though they depend politically on the Germanic Empire. The present work aims at identifying these poets thanks to a biographical approach and an analysis of social and literary networks that make it possible to uncover each poet and his background. I tried also to distinguish features of each poet and their persona created by writing. Consequently, I chose miscellaneous poems from different genres (pastourelles, jeux-partis and songs) that reveal Lorraine poetry’s variety. A comparative analysis of the themes and forms of these poems brings to light characteristics of Lorraine poetry. Nevertheless, this approach would be incomplete without a study of the poems’ reception. Actually, out of these poetic forms, comes a literary society more or less fictive in which the trouvères and their lords are side by side. This public appreciates lyrical topoï that the poet adapts cleverly and in which he finds his own picture. All things considered, public contributes to lyrical poetry’s creation. In this work, I want torepresent the poetical area of Lorraine and prove that, thanks to her literary network and to trouvères’ output, this area can be considered a veritable lyrical country, like adjoining areas, in particular Champagne and the North

Full textLe, Roux Magdel.
This dissertation deals with a holistic approach towards the history of the Israelite tribes/clans throughout the 'period of the Judges' (as referred to in the Old Testament). In my opinion, a holistic approach has the potential to offer a more comprehensive analysis of the 'period of the Judges'. A fourfold investigation into the situation of the Israelite tribes/clans is carried out involving the political context, the socio-cultural and economic situation, the religious-ideological aspect and the literary dimension. In the last chapter an attempt is made to integrate the different dimensions. To conclude, it can be said that nearly all phenomena in the tribal period was characterized by a lack of structure or order, in other words, there was anarchy in the Promised Land. 'Everyone did what was right in his own eyes' (Jdg 21 :25).
