Full textIn his short narratives, the stricker, a didactic and moralistic poet from the first part of the 13th century, introduces the different groups that composed the society of his time-the lord's subjects his advisers, the court and the court poets, the knights, the peasants and the emerging bourgeoisie-as well as their relationships with the lord, who was the central character in the ideal medevial society. However in his short narratives, the stricker constantly opposes this ideal conception of society to society as he sees it. Thus, the ideal unity between the lord and his subjects is challenged by social ambition and the claims put forward by the different social groups at that time. The sovereign's advisers, for instance, discouraged him from disposing of his wealth according to the largesse principle, and encouraged him to start saving instead. As for the knights, they seemed to be the victims of social and economic changes since they did not enjoy the same prestige as they had in in the past, and did not benefit from their lord's traditional generosity anymore. Because of their precarious situations , some of them became involved in business practices, which according to the stricker, were incompatible with their honour as knights. They were the first "merchant-knights". The image of society was further transformed by the peasant's ambitions, whom the stricker accuses of wanting to break the limits imposed by their status, in order to rise to higher functions. The role played by the money and the use of riches are the main sources of concern for the stricker. The once fundamental largesse principle is being replaced by a new notion, in which the riches are used in such a way that they contribute to increasing the importance of merchants and usurers on the one hand and prefigure the emerging of the bourgeoisie on the other hand

Full textThe main objective of this study is to analyze the image of the butler in the French theater of Jean-François Regnard. This unknown playwright was compared to Molière. Hence, his unknown theater needs to be more appreciated. The servant in Regnard’s theater presents the condition of the domestic people in reality. He/she represents the subconscious of the society. Our tool of research is social criticism. We want to know how this image represents the society in this century. But we are aware that not only does the theater represent the real society, but also it represents the imagination of the other. Furthermore, we want to depict whether Regnard’s theater was able or unable to authentically portray the condition of the domestic people. Was Regnard objective in his representation? Throughout this long journey in the world of servants, we have attempted to know how the theater represents their condition. Moreover, we have endeavored to understand the link between the dramatic function of the servant in the theater and in reality. One of the fundamental questions in our research is to know why the servant was portrayed as a manipulator. Whereas in reality, he/she is a person who is manipulated by society. My thesis examines eleven plays which were written to the French theater. This choice is not random as it is pertinent to our research question. In those plays, the servants play an important role in the action and present the condition of their life in this century

Full textThis essay undertakes the analysis of textual working in el periquillo sarniento (1816) in order to discover the way in which social, ideological, political and discursive complexity of the day is revealed by textuality. Textual network is then projected over two main axles : intertextuality and interdiscursitivy. In the first case the process of deconstruction of the spanish picaresque discoursive practice by the periquillo is examined and, in the second, the relationship with contemporary periodical litterature. The understanding of textual functionning leads to the analysis of different levels : e. G. The narrative situation, the structuration of characters and fiction and the symbolic organisation of space. The reconstruction of conceptual axles which move textuality as a whole, shows the connection with the two principle historical conflicts of the period : mexican struggles for independence from spain and internal opposition between different social groups of new spain. The present study reveazls, finnaly, the importance of two dimensions in the text : the critical and the utopian, and, in this way, the rich and close relationships between textuality and sociality in this significant spanishamerican work by j. Full textCinema is a great revealer of tortuous lines of time, and especially of how a society constructs a complex image of time, memory and history. That is why the notion of historicity is essential for the examination of the way these interrelations appear in artistic creations. By combining sociocritic and semiotic analyses of contemporary Chinese motion pictures, it is possible to describe the relation between fictitious sequences of events and their paradoxical recompositions in filmic textuality. The relations between fiction and time, memory and history take three main forms. The movies which for instance represent the retrocession of the former British colony of Hong Kong to China in 1997 illustrate the various configurations of the treatment of history. Some movies (The Longest Summer of Fruit Chan) make use of historical references explicitly and directly, although the transfer from reality to fiction nevertheless generates variations and deviations in the system of signs. Other movies deliberately avoid straightforward historical accounts (Ashes of Time of Wong Kar-wai). This liberty creates a space for artistic creation in which temporal, memorial and historical elements regularly reappear at unexpected places. In the third type of treatment, references to history are blurred, imprecise but nevertheless present almost everywhere (2046 of Wong Kar-wai). They are particularly difficult to follow, not only because they disappear and reappear, but also because they do not consistently refer to the same period

Full textFollowing the obtaining of the national literature prize of spain in 1989. Bernardo atxaga became the main author having given a new universal view to the basque literature. The fact of becoming universal has completely changend the own perception of the basque literature field, making it reach a new stage of its socio-historical evolution, which is worth submitting to a comparative assessment. However, the authors literary trajectory started long before the awarding of the prize and is still going on, making people read a heterogeneous corpus. It is a matter of calling into question and interpreting corpus in the light of its interaction with the basque and international literary context

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the identy and function of the series, les scenes de la vie de campagne,in the middle of la comedie humaine. . This series remains undetermined in its perspective. Even if,in balzac's work, country life is a specific fictional category, with paris life and provincial life,it is not only the repose in nature, but also the dream of utopia and the place revealing the struggle of social classes moved by the revolution. In the first part,we analyze the particularities of the series,in the matter of the titlology and the prefatory discourse. In the second part,we study the ideology of the space of the novel, and the functions of the different fictional places in les scenes de la vie de campagne. The third part is devoted to the study of relations between discourse and story, which helps us to understand the narrative strategies and their ideological implications. In conclusion,we can say that the country appears to be the real territory of the "revolutionized france" which balzac uses as an experimental place to highlight the political and socio-historical stakes of the epoch

Full textCuttings from carmen and from the sequences of elisa, vida mia with music are provided here in appendix to support my analysis of the sound-track. To this end i have made reference to the approach developed by the circle of sociocriticsm at paul valery university, montpellier. Those elements considered pertinent have been grouped into "co-reference points" regardless of their previous value -verbal, iconic, musical. . . - in an effort to avoid establishing any preconceived link between music and image. This study examines the relation between the music and the iconic-verbal text, as well as the interrelation of the various musical occurrences : the sound-track can be said to exist as an entirely integral element, if only temporarily. I have aimed to dsemonstrate how the internal structure of the music and its functioning work in har- mony with the other elements 0of the film to convey the overall sense. Moreover, both elisa, vida mia and carmen have revived pre-existent music : the sound-track is conside- red as a "preconstructed" "broken up" in the film. These two works, so apparently dis- similar, exploit a great diversity of musical styles (mainerie, rameau, satie, bizet's musics). It would appear to me however that those particular pieces of music used transcribe a parennial question in this cinema (or in spanish art in general?), clin- ging to the past for the sake of some hypothetical "spanish identity". From where the assumption that this spanish socio-economic context will revive discourses of the last century prevailed because of the

Full textThis work follows an objective: to show and to demonstrate the fact that in the said of the text everything is not said. The journey of the character on three continents and the structure of episodic novel writing contribute to the distortion of the hegemony of a single discourse. To this must be added the fragmentation of space which, as a process both aesthetic and strategic, allows the novelist to escape from the discursive grasp of an ideology that claims to be ubiquitous. This work envisages the narrator, not as a constituted otherness, but as a composite figure made up of the heterogeneous thoughts of the novelist. This figure contains a great reserve of contradictions. We try to recognize in the text the intermittencies of saying and of silence: heterogeneous elements which unfold on a grid of nuances between alienation, disgust and poetry. In the same way that space vacillates between poetry and the prosaic world, the semantic poles of the text, aesthetic and ideological, change borders. Semantic units are transformed into slippery alterity that tend to escape from the process of conceptualization. Unlike any idealistic critical approach which claims to reach the absolute meaning of the object by trying to merge work and life, we show how the aesthetic sense follows its crest path. We approach the concept of heterogeneity not as a purely aesthetic concept that characterizes the framework of Celine's writing but as a spirit underlying the Celinian intellectual universe. Through the use of various methods, Céline's style illustrates the semantic vacillation between alienation and liberation, between commitment and disengagement, between affirmation and denigration

Full textThis study of women’s problems as expressed linguistically, through word usage, is based on a corpus of representative works by Gabonese authors and its French title plays on the homonyms maux meaning « problems, predicaments », and mots, meaning « words ». The underlying methodology used here relies on Goldman’s and Duchet’s sociocritical approach combined with Charaudeau’s and Ratier’s discourse analysis and the interactional focus of Kerbrat-Orecchioni. The study determines that specific lexical and syntagmatic items (name words, titles, hypochoristic names, etc. ) are linked to a particular topology, that of Gabon, and they also highlight the levels and register of language which have been chosen by authors of different cultures, generations and sex. Moreover, grammatical categories (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs) point to characteristic patterns of speech used by female characters. A comparison of the way these linguistic elements are used shows the diverse relationships of the authors to the langage they have chosen to write in

Full textIn the Trilogy of Matrix I find constants which provide the filmic text with an event-driven thread, as well as signs and symbols which converge into giving a unit to it; among these last ones, the Matrix stands out compared to the mother and particularly to the womb (matrice). This symbolism is found in the filmic images which refer to the union between this machine and the men connected to her to feed her. In such context, the machine is presented as a mother who has never wished to give birth because, unlike the mother who nourishes her fetus through the umbilical cord, the Matrix feeds on human energy through the cables that wires it up to men. Of what precedes, I could conclude: 1) The machine becomes an allegory of the social control that the State exerts and of the exploitation of the work force. 2) The fact that human beings are connected to the machine also sends to a similarity of the present time where the man is sunk into a social context in which prevails technology as a means to control the human mind. I am referring to the virtual world that the contemporary man has assumed like real, like the “world web” or the “World Wide Web”. By means of these hypotheses, and with the aid of the sociocritic theory, I have succeed to build a theoretical frame that allowed me to approach the social structures through the analysis of the structures of the filmic text, for example, when identifying the machine with the contemporary State I could see how the operation of the Ideological Apparatus of State affects the social control of the individuals

Full textI propose to study the theme of the « virtual » in films in order to define it, not as an attribute of digital techniques but as the dimension and subject of both language and thought. The virtual can be found in actual films or in the reviews and comments they bring about. This is why I look for a definitional core of virtuality through a wide range of verbal and audiovisual “discourses” that have contributed to the emergence of this notion; it goes from the written works of the ancient poets and the theological speculations of the medieval scholasticism to the most recent comments on new technologies including the post-modern films presenting them. This will lead me to see in virtuality the concept par excellence, which is fundamentally capable of explaining the relative and historical nature of all other concepts and able to point out their characteristics within the language of cinema, considering its highest degree of general nature (as a language among others) but its singularity as well (according to its specific plastic forms and seen from the angle of collective or individual film styles)

Full textThis study on the problematization of war in les chemins de la liberte is based on the following hypotheses : 1) war not only changes the writer but it also transforms his concept of writing ; 2) writing on war introduces the paradoxical textualization of a world on the verge of bursting. The thesis includes an introduction to the problem of "focalisation" and instant fictional process. Then are enlighted war as a power of uniformalization and the problematic of marginality. A typology on characters is set by clarifying the effects of the emergency of "parole" among the fringe group, especially women. The third part examines the function of war as a principle of distribution of fictional materials according to "champs modaux" such as will, knowledge and power. The fourth part, after considering what sartre owes to the novels dealing with previous wars, explicates specific ways of writing on war in each volume of this trilogy and beyond. Then analysis is carried out on the different textual features : breaking-up and transmigration of the narrative units ; editing process of conjunction of the fragmentary pieces whose linking makes us perveiving the main thematic, mythical and ideological basis. From the beginning to the end, sartrean fiction writing undergoes a proof of reliability. Les chemins de la liberte is a novel of war not because it uses war as object but because it gives us a "poetics of war"

Full textAt the time fray gerundio de campazas (hencerforth fgc) came out, a share of the public was attacked in its pages, so that this text happered to be read as the criti que of baroque sacred predication. It favoked later a polemical trend wich issued in the book interdiction. A sociocritical approach seems to be right way to account for the reality of these facts and explain them. Fgc wideed offers a voluminous paratext inside wich an ideological project takes shape, determining an influence, not only on the first readers but also on the follo wing ones, under the appearance and within the fame of a "satire of sacred predication". Fgc reache such a unanimity by enforcing - a from the beginning - a discursive systematism of power and censorship. If at a first level the systematic discourse ( order, closure and determination) allows the ideological plan to be fulfilled, it al so accounts for the productive "grammar" which is at the origin of textual phenomena: paratext, polemical trend, narrative voice, space and time. Moreover, the same dis- cursive system paradoxically allows an attempt to overlap the project and hencerforth legitimates a sociohistorical approach. Fgc within itself transcribes the contest for power wich opposed two groups among spanish noblemen in the 18er century. Depla- oing then the power aimed at ideological stake, a new one develops itself at book le vel of the contents and the structures of the text, since fgc also devices historic-

Full text"The prisoner" is a British TV serial that was released in the mid-sixties. It transcends the fictional form then dominating the spy narrative in order to propose an aesthetically and ideologically innovative version of the genre. As a political criticism of the welfare state society, this TV serials reflects a scrambled, transitory world, particularly marked by a upheaval in the class functions. To begin with, this research demythifies the largely propagated illusion of an absolute originality and replaces the palimpsest of the prisoner in the posterity of a transtextual corpus mainly delineated by the works of Carroll, Kafka and Chesterton. Secondly, the dissertation underlines the ambitions but equally the limits of a work that intends to denounce all forms of social controls, echoing the scientific and technocratic phantasms which permeates the majority of the sixties serials. Those limits are linked with the test of representation against which the ideological project stumbles, and the contradictions that the serial conjures up. Lastly, the research takes into accord the reception effects produced by the specific object which the TV serials is : it particularly underlines the legitimisation effects which define the serial as a cult, by transposing advanced vision of art in the sphere of popular creations

Full textHow can a literary text be positioned as an objective for a scientific research and especially, this being a specific aspect of this work, how can one start from a literary text to feed the thought of research in sociology of art ? starting from a corpus of short stories by the Argentinian writer Julio Cordozar and using a narrative as an experiment in thought (Gedanken experiment), the objective is to build a methodical tool capable of answering the previous questions within the scope of an abductive approach (abduction being a particular inferential process of hypothetic-deductive reasoning, together with deduction and induction) which will allow to start directly from the texts in order to organized the questioning process. The nature of this approach is transverse, referring to theory in the history of sociology (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Simmel) as well as modern writers (Goldmann, Adorno, Marcuse, Francastel, Bastide) or contemporaries (Bourdieu, Leonhard, Passeron, Duvignaud) but also to many other disciplines, philosophy and history of sciences (Ricoeur, Bachelard, Kuhn), semiology and semiotics (Barthes, Eco, Greimas). All this will show how the text can be transformed from a given object into another one conceptually build for scientific approach on the one hand and on the other hand to build an epistemological questioning process on sociology itself from the text. Consequently the point is not to develop a thesis on Julio Cordozar’s work but on the contrary, starting from this work used as an epistemological partner, to bring about a series of questions such as the position of the text in the theoretical space in sociology of literature; the relationship between literature (art) and science in the process of knowledge-building ; the importance of pathos and sensitivity in the science esthetics relationship, etc. .

Full textThe closed and the open according to carlos pellicer, signs of the continuous and discontinuous : the circle, the rotundity and the spiral are related to the law of the center, and the window, the door, the violation, the arrow and the sword are the impact of the conquest or of the revolution. Water, the first element of the poetic universe, is linked with "maternal imagos". These are influential in the concept of "naturacosa", and the paternal images in the cult of the hero. This mysticism of the hero as well as the identification of the individual in the community. The stressing of the precolombian past, the vision of the conquest and the concept of race and north american anti-imperialism are to be situated in an ontological perspective of mexicaness, characteristic of the postrevolutionary national bourgeoisie. The hellenism, saint francois d'assise, bolivar and vasconcelos are the poles of the ideology of the poet. The structural dynamism which translates itself by a system of inversion, and the traces of the myth of the machine are the signs of a mutation of the poetic language. Poet of his time, forming part of the group of "contemporaneos", pellicer is influenced by modernism, the surrealism. Industrialisation leaves its mark in the rewrite of the poem, which paradoxically is an idyllic vision of the tropics

Full textAngélica Gorodischer is a contemporary Argentine writer of international renown. However, the initial period of his literary production, dominant SF (Science Fiction), remains largely unknown. Beyond their undeniable literary quality, these texts and deserve to be highlighted for thinking they trigger the social relations of domination, some paradoxes of political action but also a period of intense conflict of Argentine History (political and social conflicts, dictatorships and 1966 1976) .We use for this analysis tools developed by sociocriticism theory supplementing them with the use of gender studies and studies utopia and SF. This first question the periodization established by literary criticism to be able to identify gender issues that shape the early works of the writer. We then extend the analysis by taking into account the consubstantiality of social relations and examining the questioning of the idea of nature. Finally, we consider the work as an open and critical encyclopedia that promotes the utopian impulse.
