Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The main purpose of this dissertation is to propose a translation for the speech of the characters that speak Yorkshire dialect in the novel Wuthering Heights. This novel, published for the first time in England in 1847, has already been translated nine times into Brazilian Portuguese; besides, these translations have also been reissued here. This dissertation has as its basis the fact that in all nine Brazilian translations the Yorkshire dialect has been rendered into standard Portuguese. We consider that it is necessary to keep in Portuguese the linguistic diversity found in the original text, since it is a very important characteristic of the novel that cannot be ignored, most of all because linguistic and sociolinguistic studies have shown that dialects are not \"inferior\" forms of a \"standard\", correct, language. Taking into consideration the linguistic differences that exist between English and Brazilian Portuguese, and having as basis dialectological studies and the use of elements of oral language to create the speech of the characters in Portuguese, this work intends to show to Brazilian readers the fact that some characters in the novel do not speak standard English, as well as an analysis about the role played by the use of dialect in different moments of the novel.

Rapeane, Maleshoane. "A sociolectal and dialectal study of Southern Sotho in Lesotho." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/14367.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 145-149.
In this dissertation we examine variation, in both speech and writing, in the South Sotho spoken in Lesotho. We indicate that the South Sotho used by a majority of speakers today shows a shift from both earlier and prescribed varieties. Open-ended questionnaires and informal conversations were used to study aspects of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and the lexicon of South Sotho. Samples were collected from speakers with ages ranging from twelve to over eighty. The dissertation shows that the age, social status, sex and locality of speakers are contributing factors in their language repertoire. We argue that South Sotho lacks the homogeneity that is claimed by language purists in Lesotho, and therefore has non-standard varieties, namely, dialects and sociolects. Although the structure of standard South Sotho sentences is relatively stable, the phonology, lexicon and semantics are indicative of major endogenous and exogenous changes. On the other hand, Sotho morphology shows endogenous changes only. The influence of English on South Sotho is increasing at the expense of Afrikaans influence.

Abstract:
This thesis will serve as a case study on the translation of sociolectal literature, using my translation into English of Acadian author Georgette LeBlanc’s second collection of poetry, Amédé, as a paradigm. Written in the Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French sociolect, this work represents an interesting example of the difficulties that can arise while translating minority language literature, from both a linguistic and discursive perspective. Broadly speaking, the objective of my analysis will be to explore the relationship between the literary representation of sociolect and the creation of underlying networks of meaning, focusing on both the linguistic and discursive aspects of LeBlanc’s choices in portraying Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French in order to justify my translation of her work into African Nova Scotian English, also referred to as Africadian English.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the use of sociolects in Michel Tremblay's Sainte Carmen de la Main , David Fennario's On the Job and Vittorio Rossi's Scarpone. The term sociolect identifies the language variation of a specific social group. The social groups then subdivide into various other categories which use sociolect sub-genres. The authors use the sociolects of the working class and the sociolect sub-genres of members of this social class who share similar occupations to create the hyperlanguage of their characters. In using such language variations, the authors show the aesthetic qualities of the working-class sociolect, and show the cohesive and protestative properties of a language variation that differs from the culturally established norms.

Abstract:
Our hypothesis lies in the notion that texts are an intrinsic part of the discourses of the society to which they belong. As the written work is under the influence of the social discourses to which it pertains, so does its translation comply with the expectations of the target reader by incorporating socio-discursive elements from the receiving society. In this thesis, we explore the translation of sociolects as symbolic representations of speech. Our corpus consists of three American plays from the realist theatre, three French translations written in the fifties, and five Quebecois translations, three of which were produced in the seventies. The comparison of French and Quebecois translations enables us to observe that the changes denounce an adaptation of the original text to certain socio-discursive models in the target society which include the theatre aesthetics of the time. The discursive patterns that we noted in the original plays refer to two main themes in realist theatre: the American family and the American dream. After having analysed these elements according to the mainstream ideas prevailing at that particular time, we identified the modified sections of the text in the translations and commented on the new patterns that were emerging. Finally, we demonstrated that these transformations can be explained in terms of aesthetic, stylistic, and thematic tendencies adopted by the target society. In conclusion, this study shows that despite the translator's attempts to "faithfully" reproduce a text, he establishes links between the two theatre forms by adapting the original to the acceptability terms of the target society.

Randell, Elizabeth. "'Le vrai recueil des Sarcelles' of Nicolas Jouin : an edition with a linguistic study of the depicted sociolect and its Parisian connections." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/545.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore an aspect of the history of vernacular speech through analysis of some eighteenth century verse texts. These satirical anti-Jesuit pamphlets by Nicolas Jouin, known as the 'Sarcelades', were collected posthumously in 'Le Vrai Recueil des Sarcelles' of 1764. The texts purport to be in the patois of the peasants of Sarcelles and show features which may be paralleled in the vernacular speech of Paris and elsewhere, and even correspond with features of contemporary colloquial French. The study may appeal to French historical sociolinguists interested in reconstructing spoken language of the past, and particularly in the history of vernacular speech of Paris since the Middle Ages through to the eighteenth century, in the context of the development of urban dialects. In order to set the scene for a linguistic description of Jouin’s work the limited biographical information available was collated. Then a period of bibliographical research led to acquisition of copies of the texts which were to be studied in order to identify and examine their non-standard linguistic features. Firstly the process of growth of urban dialects was discussed, and then the development of the Paris vernacular in particular. Then attention was turned to direct written evidence in the form of commentary and to a number of texts from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries containing features of the Paris vernacular. These had already been analysed by certain historical linguists, although the texts in the 'Sarcelades' had hitherto only been briefly mentioned. However, here they are considered to be of sufficient interest to be examined more closely, although it had to be established whether Jouin’s texts containing a selection of non-standard features could be regarded as an accurate depiction of the Paris vernacular at the period. The non-standard phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical features in the texts were therefore compared with findings in other texts by previous commentators. Following these analyses it was noted to what extent the relative frequency of the variables correlates with the salience of certain features in popular speech in Paris at the period, as already observed in other texts by previous commentators, and it was concluded that in general established characteristics of the 'patois de Paris' at the period are to be found in the 'Sarcelades', even though there do remain certain features which do not appear to be generally attested elsewhere. Nevertheless, despite reservations concerning the authenticity of some of the non-standard features employed by Jouin, by bringing attention to this little-known series of texts this study may help to claim a place for the Sarcelades amongst the corpus of texts which reflect aspects of the lower-class sociolect, the 'patois de Paris', at the period.

Abstract:

Be to surinktoje medžiagoje esama 6% neologizmų bei 0,7% regionalizmų.
The theme of this master’s work is the evolution of the sociolect of the young people of the Polish origin in Vilnius. The aim of this work is to research the present language spoken by the Polish young people and to compare it with the material presented in the report by Miroslaw Dawlewicz titled ‘The vocabulary of the sociolect of the young people of the Polish origin in Wilno’, which was written in 1996-1997 years. It must give the answer if the sociolect of the young people of Vilnius is stable or has changed. Presented in the work vocabulary of the sociolect of the young people in Vilnius in 17 thematic groups include 2341 words. The characteristic feature of the sociolect of the young people of the Polish origin in Wilno is that there is a great number of the loans from different languages. They present 50% of the work material. 44% of loans are from Russian language, 2 % - from Lithuanian and 2,5% from English. There were also researched neologisms, which contain 7% and localisms – 0,7%. The comparison result says that the number of loans from Russian language has increased for the last 10 years, but the number of loans from English and Lithuanian didn’t change.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the way in which characters’ speech in the well-known American writer Katherine Paterson’s two novels for children, The Great Gilly Hopkins (1978) and The Same Stuff as Stars (2002), is translated by Romualda Zagorskienė and Renata Valotkienė, respectively in 1989 and 2005. The aim of this analysis is to consider and compare how Zagorskienė and Valotkienė deal with lexico-grammatical features that are hard to translate: grammatically deviant forms, colloquial forms, dialect and, especially, kinds of vocabulary that mark each character’s sociolect, such as the use of swearwords or name-calling. Further, the thesis looks at the effects of the strategies they choose on the presentation of characters and their relationships in the novels. The hypothesis that a number of lexico-grammatical features of characters’ speech will be standardized in translation has been raised, as this is suggested by current theoretical and practical research in translation studies. Thus, at first several relevant theoretical issues, based in particular on Gillian Lane-Mercier and Tiina Puurtinen’s theoretical research on the translation of tenor in fictional dialogues and literary sociolects, as well as what are known as the universals of translation are presented. In the thesis, the analysis of Zagorskienė and Valotkienė’s strategies is divided into two major parts. First, in Section 3, a detailed analysis of Zagorskienė and Valotkienė’s strategies for translating swearwords... [to full text]

Abstract:

Abstract:

Thesis, Artois, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010ARTO0004/document.

Abstract:
For Antoine Berman, a major characteristic of great prose is its ability to “span the whole linguistic range of a community”. Some writers, such as Twain, Faulkner, Steinbeck and Salinger, have thus drawn on all the resources of the English language in order to recreate vernacular discourse and/or nonstandard idiolects. This stylistic strategy, which expresses theauthor’s particular ideological and political attitudes, is often lost when translated into French. Translating these “deviant” forms of writing poses specific problems while being paradigmatic of the way in which the translator is embedded in the translated text : nonstandard discursive patterns therefore provide a privileged viewpoint from which to study the translator’s action as well as the strategies he uses to transfer the original’s ideological and aesthetical dimensions to the translated text. Our study begins with a sociolinguistic analysis of nonstandard English, before examining its use in literature, in order to understand the dual dialectic of “mediation and emulation” that links literary sociolects to linguistic reality. Wethen explore the practical and theoretical tradition of literary translation to understand what factors affect the translator’s work and his/her approach to nonstandard writing. Finally, we analyse a corpus of translations: using Bourdieu’s sociological theory and Berman’s “systems of deformation” analytical system, we examine the “re-enunciation” (Folkart) strategiesadopted by various translators and the potential readings that result

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the effects of translation into French and of adaptation for the stage, in English, on the dialogue of Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights (published in North America as The Golden Compass). The study focuses on the speech of Lyra, the novel’s protagonist, in terms of both its linguistic qualities and the functions it supports within the novel and the trilogy of which it forms part, His Dark Materials. The study aims to identify the ways in which not just the linguistic surface of fictional speech is affected by translation and adaptation but also the degree to which the roles played by the dialogue in the source text are reflected or transformed in the different versions. The unusual research design, involving a comparison of the effects of interlingual translation and intermedial adaptation on the same text, consists of two main elements. In the first quantitative section, the relative incidence of three variables is measured for the purposes of identifying how features of spoken style and non-standard variation are treated. This analysis is followed by a detailed qualitative evaluation of a small number of dialogue passages that exemplify the key linguistic features and likely textual functions of Lyra’s speech in the novel. The passages concerned are compared with equivalent stretches of dialogue in the French translation and the theatrical script. The study finds evidence to suggest that Pullman uses dialogue in support of characterisation, plot, and also ideological and intertextual concerns. All of these aspects are affected, in subtle but significant ways, by the different decisions made by the translator and the dramatist in respect of Lyra’s speech. The study also finds that aspects of both user-related and situation-related variation in fictional speech may be worthy of further research.

Abstract:
Referring to diverse works and authors of various epochs, styles or nationalities, this dissertaion, on the representation of the dialectal and foreign substratum in the french and anglo-american litterature and on its translation, attempts to understand the approach of those authors who resort to phonetic transcription and thereby better comprehend that of the translators. Analysing first the diverse motive which urge these writers to upsted the grammatical and spelling standards in order to transfigure orality and speech on paper, and then questionning the validity of a method to be applied to hese linguistic creations, this study _ notably by an enumeration of the devices wich help materialize the dialectal or foreign accent _ tries to answer the lexical, grammatical or morphosyntactic question induced by such an incursion of the spoken, within the text. As it finally elucidates the translation tools set up in these literatures, this work suggests avenue of insipration for the future translator, thereby transforming blocks into stepping stones to creativity

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with sociolect of mothers on babywebs, its objective was to analyze this sociolect. The research was mainly focused on the analysis of a lexical part of discussions of selected babywebs. In the theoretical part we tried to give a chronological overview of Czech linguists' theories about sociolects, the analyzed sociolect is specified on the background of these theories. At the beginning of the empirical part, the analyzed sociolect is characterized from the point of view of setting, group of users and their special activity, then the thematically sorted list of collected sociolectisms and word-formation processes are presented. The following chapter deals with the specifics of the analyzed sociolect which contain the theme of writing and speaking, expressivity, acronyms, shifts of grammatical categories and comparison with the medical sociolect. The empirical part also includes questionnaire research with the aim of discovering whether the selected expressions appear out of the internet as well or whether those expressions are fixed to the internet setting. The following part of the thesis is crucial, it is the dictionary part that contains alphabetically ordered expressions of the sociolect of mothers on babywebs including acronyms and deminutives that are semantically specified...

Abstract:
This MA thesis deals with sociolect as it is used in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Thegoal of the thesis is to find and describe the connections between particular characters and their social profiles. This goal leads to the following hypothesis: Chaucer described the characters on the basis of social stereotypes. Each of these characters uses certain language style which can be defined as a sociolect. The work consists of two main parts. The first theoretical part is focused on what a sociolect is, as well as the development of the English language in the 14th century and the life of Geoffrey Chaucer. Furthermore, it explores the English social history of the 14th century England, which is the key to understanding the social profile of Chaucer's characters. The following analytical part presents a description of the characters, hypotheses about their styles and the stylistic analyses of the language of the selected stories. Finally, the conclusion presents the answers to the questions from the introduction and more importantly, it explains why the principle hypothesis has been proved only partly.

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to a relatively little explored issue - the social differentiation of literary characters and the transfer of its linguistic means. The language material for exploring this field of translatology was provided by Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1928) and by two translations into Czech (1935 and 1968). We analyzed utterances of two characters. The first one represents a lower social class and criminal environment. In his speech the analysis showed many elements of Berlin urbanolect which were used for his social characterization. The second character represents the Jewish ethnic group. His direct speech contains elements of literary Yiddish, alluding to his Jewish origins. The subsequent utterance analysis of the first character in Czech translations showed an appropriate use of common Czech as a substitute for Berlin urbanolect in both translations. The analysis was set in the context where the usage of nonstandard elements in Czech and translated literature used to be a convention. Both translators followed these conventions successfully. When translating the literary Yiddish in the direct speech of the second character, significant differences in both translations were discovered. In the first translation the Yiddish elements were not replaced. In the second...

There are no sociolinguistic studies based on comprehensive analysis conducted among physicians that would present the structure of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons’ sociolect, to describe its pragmatics, ethical and legal aspects as well as the nomination process in the sociolect terminology. The first attempt to analyse physicians’ sociolect was the article written by Adam T. Fox „Medical Slang in British Hospitals”. This article contains a list of sociolect lexemes used by English-speaking physicians (over 190 lexemes) (A. T. Fox 2003: 173-189). The dictionary „Slang medyczny i akronimy: słownik angielsko-polski” was published in 2007. It was written not by physicians, but by linguists – Linda Perlińska and Janusz Krzysztof. The dictionary does not contain any linguistic comments sensu stricto (L. Perlińska 2007). The research included the following tasks: 1) to complete a list of sociolect words used by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, 2) to describe the structure of the cardiologists and cardiac surgeons’ sociolect (to define the core and the periphery), 3) to characterise pragmatic, ethical and legal aspects of the Polish, Russian and English physicians’ sociolect, 4) to provide the semantic and derivational analysis of the sociolect vocabulary as well as frequency analysis.

Abstract:
Abstract Translating the Québécois Sociolect for Cinema: The Creation of a Supertext in Bon Cop Bad Cop Jo-Anne Hadley This thesis addresses the subtitling of the Québécois sociolect into English. In the bilingual comedy film Bon Cop Bad Cop, although the meaning of the Québécois dialogue is rendered, the flavour of the original sociolect is lost. This thesis posits that the failure to render the Québécois sociolect in the English subtitles of Bon Cop Bad Cop gives rise to understatement, thereby creating a “supertext” for bilingual movie-goers who read the subtitles that actually enhances the humour of this comedy. Examples of the supertext will be drawn from Bon Cop Bad Cop to illustrate this hypothesis. Dialogue and subtitles from Bon Cop Bad Cop will be compared and contrasted with those from De père en flic/Father and Guns, a film whose subtitles successfully render the Québécois sociolect and thus do not create a supertext. This analysis will serve to determine the types of adaptation and compensation that were used in Father and Guns to render the sociolect. The findings from this project will be of interest not only to subtitlers but all translators of the Québécois sociolect.

A description of the overall process of game localization, and specifically its practice in the Czech Republic are included. Lexical analysis of selected computer game reviews and online discussions is complemented with a questionnaire survey to reveal if and how computer games and game- focused articles influence the constitution of a characteristic sociolect and its usage outside the gamer subculture. Concepts used in intercultural and interlingual transfer of computer games are defined and compared with established terms in translation studies. A comparative analysis of original and Czech versions of two computer games is carried out to identify translation methods used in the transfer of culture- and language-specific elements in order to determine whether the process of computer game translation exhibits any specific features that may justify the introduction of new terms into translation studies. Rozdział czwarty to analiza komentarza telewizyjnego w oparciu o nagrania wideo pochodzące z finałów Igrzysk Olimpijskich w Rio de Janeiro w 2016 roku. W rozdziale piątym pokazałam socjolekt strzelecki na tle innych odmian funkcjonalnych polszczyzny. Natomiast w zakończeniu podsumowałam dotychczasowe badania, wskazałam podobieństwa i różnice socjolektu strzeleckiego wobec polszczyzny ogólnej oraz wytyczyłam dalsze kierunki badań. Całość dopełnia indeks nazw.
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyse the language of sport shooters, which had so far not been described in detail, and to place it among the varieties of general Polish. The work consists of five chapters, introduction, conclusion, bibliography, and index of names. In the introduction I presented the subject and objectives of the research and the methodology of the work. I discussed the state of research on varieties of Polish related to specific professions or communities, as well as the sports sociolect. The first chapter is an attempt at semantic and structural classification of names in the field of sport shooting. In the second chapter I discussed the functioning of the shooting sociolect in the context of various relations observed at the shooting range. In chapter three, I focused on analysing surveys about the stereotype of a shooter in Polish. Chapter four is an analysis of television commentary based on video recordings from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games finals. In the fifth chapter I showed the shooting sociolect against the background of other functional varieties of Polish. In the conclusion I summarized the research so far, pointed out the similarities and differences of the shooting sociolect in relation to general Polish, and suggested further research directions. The whole work is complemented by an index of names.

Charakteryzuje go nacechowanie emocjonalne, często stosowana gra słów, występowanie żartów językowych, a także wulgaryzmów. Jest to odmiana ustna, którą cechuje: profesjonalność, tajność, ekspresywność. Przedstawione badania dają praktyczną możliwość przygotowania pełnego słownika profesjolektu funkcjonariuszy Podlaskiego Oddziału Straży Granicznej. Posłużą także zrozumieniu i badaniom zagadnień związanych z profesjolektami.
The Podlasie region is culturally and linguistically diverse. The interplay of Polish, Russian, and Belarusian languages, as well as their variants, means that apart from the official terminology used by border services, there is a specific lexicon not found in other professional groups. The purpose of the dissertation is the registration and multifaceted description of the lexis and phraseology used by the professional group of officers of the Podlasie Border Guard Unit. After the initial division of the collected material, it was seen that the development of professolects takes place in two ways: they are based on the own lexis of the Polish language and lexis borrowed from other foreign languages. The language integrates the group, at the same time distinguishing it from others and reflecting the approach of its members to the surrounding reality. It is characterized by emotional character, frequently used wordplay, language jokes and vulgarisms. It is an oral variety, which is characterized by professionalism, secrecy and expressiveness. The presented research gives a practical opportunity to prepare a full professolectal dictionary of officers of the Podlasie Border Guard Regional Unit. It will also be used to understand and study issues related to professolects.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the language practices of French-speaking reggae singers. The work investigates how Jamaican musical inspiration came to the French scene, and which phonetic, morphosyntactic and especially lexical devices are found there. An inseparable object of research, equally undescribed, was the vernacular of francophone reggae fans. The empirical part investigates a random sample of French reggae (approx. 50 thousand words). The songs differ geographically, chronologically (1979-2010) and musically (roots, raggamuffin, dancehall). The research not only focuses on popular and colloquial French, slang, urban language, musical influence or poetry, but also on the coherence between themes and functions fulfilled by francophone reggae. A list of neologisms shows preferences in lexicogenic processes. Furthermore, the method includes a web survey answered by 189 French-speaking reggae fans, who represent the 'new speech' community. As a result, the hypothesis of a new vernacular, independent from rap, is confirmed. The specific hybridity is defined by code switching and more than a hundred English and Jamaican borrowings, which are commonly used by the fans.

Abstract:
in English with English title of the thesis: Language of SMS and French as a foreign language The central topic of the thesis is the language of short text messages (SMS) and/or the one of chat and their application in teaching of French as a foreign language (fr. abbreviation F.L.E., français langue étrangère). The aim is to answer the question so as to how to grasp linguo- didactically this modern sociolect of young users (not only) of French, typical of written communication via digital technologies, with the purpose of the purely practical use in the classes of French.
