Abstract:
This chapter traces the genealogy of the critical ethnographic turn in research on language policy and planning (LPP). The first part of the chapter shows how different strands of ethnographic research contributed to this intellectual movement, eventually moving us beyond the divide between “micro” and “macro.” Here, we consider the specific contributions of research in the ethnography of communication, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, critical sociolinguistic ethnography, and the ethnography of language policy. The second part of the chapter focuses on the particular advantages that accrue from adopting critical ethnographic approaches. Here, bringing ontological and epistemological perspectives into the frame and highlighting the need for researcher reflexivity, we consider critical ethnography as a way of seeing, as a way of looking and of building knowledge, and, lastly, as a way of being as a researcher.

Bayley, Robert. Variationist Sociolinguistics. Edited by Robert Bayley, Richard Cameron, and Ceil Lucas. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199744084.013.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The central ideas of variationist sociolinguistics are that an understanding of language requires an understanding of variable as well as categorical processes, and that the variation witnessed at all levels of language is not random. Rather, linguistic variation is characterized by orderly or “structured heterogeneity.” In addition, synchronic variation is often a reflection of diachronic change. This chapter reviews representative studies and outlines the main assumptions underlying the variationist approach. It presents an example of variationist analysis, using the well-known case of variation between Spanish null and overt subject personal pronouns. Then, the chapter considers a number of relatively recent developments in variationist sociolinguistics including the expansion of the variationist paradigm into new areas such as second-language acquisition and sign linguistics, as well as recent work that combines ethnographic observation and quantitative analysis.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the synergy that researchers in language policy have developed by integrating two other subfields of sociolinguistics: critical discourse analysis and critical ethnography. The chapter begins by discussing the meanings of the three key concepts used in these approaches, albeit sometimes in significantly different ways: critique, ethnography, and discourse. It then examines how these concepts are relevant to contemporary analyses of language policy, focusing particularly on their potential to open new and innovative avenues of research. To demonstrate how an integrated critical discourse and ethnographic approach can be applied in concrete empirical research, the chapter presents an analysis of language policy and practice in the European Union before providing an overview of other relevant studies in the area.

Pérez-Milans, Miguel. Metapragmatics in the Ethnography of Language Policy. Edited by James W. Tollefson and Miguel Pérez-Milans. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190458898.013.7.

Abstract:
This chapter traces briefly the origins and development of the ethnography of language policy. It argues that, although this tradition has put ethnography firmly on the language policy and planning (LPP) research agenda since the turn of the twenty-first century, it has not yet sufficiently addressed some persistent problems. Against this background, metapragmatics is presented as a suitable epistemological framework, one that draws from two contemporary shifts in the study of texts, contexts, and meanings in linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics: (1) a departure from emphasis on denotational meanings, toward closer description of performative actions; and (2) a shift in the analytical entry point, from communicative events to trajectories of identification. These shifts are examined with reference to existing work and illustrated via ethnographic research that is revisited through the lens being proposed. Some of the implications for the study of LPP processes in conditions of late modernity are also addressed.
