Abstract:
This essay documents the diffusion of the Italian language and culture in Aotearoa-New Zealand, an officially bilingual (English and Māori), as revealed by the double name, and multicultural society. By adopting an eclectic approach that combines sociolinguistics, language teaching methodology, and cultural anthropology, my paper is a micro-ethnography performed on a group of five women of Italian origin with different levels of competency in Italian as their second language. This group of Kiwis – as New Zealanders frequently refer to themselves – ranged age from 16 to 68 and reside in greater Auckland, New Zealand’s most populous city. Their testimonies were collected through a series of face-to-face semi-structured qualitative interviews and based on several sessions of participant observation involving immersion and interaction in the socio-cultural environment of the informants. Notwithstanding their small number, the stories collected in this research disclose a significant ethnographic relevance as they testify to key aspects of Italianness in the social and historical context of New Zealand. In line with the sociolinguistic theories on the circulation of Italian in the world, on the motivations underpinning its learning and on the typology of speakers, I specifically addressed the following topics: Italian as a language of migration, Italian as a language of culture, Italian taught at university, Italian as part of a fluid and transnational multi-identity, and Italian in the global market.

 Il seguente saggio documenta la diffusione della lingua e della cultura italiana in Aotearoa - Nuova Zelanda, paese ufficialmente bilingue (inglese e Māori), come rivela il doppio nome, e multiculturale. Attraverso un approccio eclettico che combina sociolinguistica, glottodidattica e antropologia culturale, l’articolo si propone come micro-etnografia condotta su un gruppo di cinque donne di origine italiana con diversi livelli di competenza in italiano come lingua seconda. Questo gruppo di informatrici Kiwi – questo è il nome con il quale i/le neozelandesi si riferiscono comunemente a sé stessi/e – ha un’età compresa tra i sedici e i sessantotto anni e risiede nell’area metropolitana di Auckland, la città più popolosa della Nuova Zelanda. Le loro testimonianze sono state raccolte tramite una serie di interviste qualitative semi-strutturate, condotte di persona, e diverse sessioni di osservazione partecipante che hanno comportato l’immersione e l’interazione nell’ambiente socio-culturale delle informatrici. Nonostante il loro numero limitato, le storie raccolte in questa ricerca dimostrano una significativa rilevanza etnografica poiché testimoniano aspetti chiave dell’italianità nel contesto storico-sociale neozelandese. In linea con le teorie sociolinguistiche sulla circolazione dell'italiano nel mondo, sui motivi dell’apprendimento e sulla tipologia dei parlanti, ho esaminato nello specifico i seguenti argomenti: l’italiano lingua di migrazione, l’italiano lingua di cultura, l’italiano insegnato all’università, l’italiano come parte di una pluri-identità fluida e transnazionale e, infine, l’italiano nel mercato globale.

Abstract:
Il presente contributo si propone di descrivere la percezione dell’italianità di alcuni imprenditori italiani e italo-canadesi che operano nell’ambito del Made in Italy nell’area della città di Toronto (Ontario) denominata Little Italy. La categoria del Made in Italy, dal punto di vista legislativo, identifica tutti i prodotti realizzati in Italia e con materia prima italiana e viene opposta a quella di Italian sounding che, al contrario, è associata a prodotti che ricordano l’Italia e che talvolta fingono solamente un legame con il Bel Paese. L’analisi è stata condotta a partire da un corpus di interviste a imprenditori italiani e italo-canadesi che hanno le loro attività nel quartiere che sorge lungo College Street, a Toronto. Lo studio si colloca nell’ambito della sociolinguistica interpretativa e mira a ricostruire la percezione dell’italianità di imprenditori che hanno alcune attività italiane gestite da famiglie italiane e tra le prime aperte lungo College Street. L’analisi ha consentito di cogliere le trasformazioni che il concetto di italianità ha avuto nel corso degli ultimi cinquant’anni e, con esso, come l’italianità nella Little Italy studiata sia passata da heritage a legacy e ad affection.

Il contributo prende in esame il ruolo educativo che i media hanno esercitato nella storia linguistica italiana e internazionale, tracciando un profilo semiotico sulle implicazioni che questi hanno avuto nel determinare il paradigma del nostos in contesto estero e migratorio. A fronte di una prima ricognizione sui processi linguistico-educativi italiani per i quali è risultato evidente il ruolo dei mezzi di comunicazione nella definizione del processo di unificazione linguistica nazionale, l’analisi propone una riflessione sui media italiani in Canada, affrontandone le dinamiche in chiave linguistico educativa con una prospettiva intergenerazionale che sostenga il ruolo del nostos entro le diverse generazioni di utenti. L'analisi si conclude con una indagine sociolinguistica e con una riflessione che guarda ai media come fattore di una rete articolata di elementi in grado di cooperare per arginare il processo di diminuzione della presenza della lingua italiana in contesto straniero sui piani della formazione e del generale uso linguistico.

La lingua dei segni italiana (LIS) è oggetto di ricerca scientifica da oltre quaranta anni ed è insegnata a pieno titolo nell’Università italiana da più di venti anni. In particolare, all’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia e all’Università di Catania, la LIS può essere scelta come lingua di specializzazione al pari delle altre lingue offerte. L’insegnamento della LIS si può ora giovare della recente pubblicazione del QCER - Volume Complementare (Consiglio d’Europa, 2020), un manuale innovativo e inclusivo perché, rispetto alla versione del 2001, include le competenze linguistiche nelle lingue dei segni. Tre sono le principali novità: i) l’inserimento di espressioni neutrali rispetto alla modalità comunicativa (es. “il parlante/segnante”), ii) l’equiparazione funzionale delle videoregistrazioni ai testi scritti, e iii) un intero capitolo dedicato ai descrittori specifici per le lingue dei segni (suddivisi in competenze linguistiche, sociolinguistiche e pragmatiche). Questo contributo propone alcune riflessioni sull’applicazione di questi descrittori al caso specifico dell’insegnamento della LIS tracciando precise linee di progettazione didattica ed esempi di interventi formativi. L’impatto del Volume Complementare sui corsi di LIS nelle Università italiane comporterà ricadute positive non soltanto sul fronte dell’insegnamento ma anche, più in generale, sulla formazione dei professionisti sordi e udenti che lavorano con la LIS e con le persone sorde.
 
 Sign languages in the Companion volume and the teaching of LIS in Italian universities
 Italian Sign Language (LIS) has been studied by researchers for over forty years and has been taught in its own right in Italian universities for more than twenty years. In particular, at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and at the University of Catania, LIS can be chosen as a language of specialization on a par with the other languages ​​on offer. LIS teaching can now benefit from the recent publication of the CEFR - Companion Volume (Council of Europe, 2020), an innovative and inclusive handbook as, compared to the 2001 version, it includes the linguistic competence in sign languages. In this regard, there are three main innovations: i) the inclusion of neutral expressions in terms of communication modality (e.g. “the speaker/signer”), ii) the recognition of the functional equivalence between video recordings and written texts, and iii) an entire chapter dedicated to language-specific descriptors of sign languages (organized into linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic skills). This paper discusses the application of these descriptors to the specific case of LIS teaching by tracing paths in didactic planning and providing examples of training interventions. The impact of the Companion Volumeon LIS courses in Italian universities will have positive effects not only on the teaching itself but also, more generally, on the training of deaf and hearing professionals who work with LIS and deaf people.

L'Italia, che neppure nel passato mancava di grammatiche di indirizzo normativo e descrittivo, si è arricchita negli ultimi anni di una serie di opere glottodidattiche dedicate all'italiano. Una delle ultime è il poderoso volume La lingua e i testi, Grammatica de/la lingua italiana di P. Agazzi, A. Fallica e A. Menegoi, edito da Minerva Italica, Bergamo, 1988. II libro non è soltanto una grammatica in senso usuale: infatti, vi si trattano le nozioni fondamentali della teoria linguistica attuale (comunicazione, segno linguistico, codice, funzioni della lingua, metafora e metonomia, denotazione e connotazione, fattori della comunicazione), della teoria del testo (con alcuni campioni di testi di vario genere), in seguito l'origine e lo sviluppo della lingua italiana (dall'Indovinello veronese ai nostri giorni), i dialetti e le comunita alloglotte, e nell'ultima delle quattro appendici si danno gli elementi della composizione scritta. Il volume include dunque in notevole misura la sociolinguistica, la pragmatica, la comunicazione e la teoria dell'informazione (invece di parlante o locutore e collocutore si usano conseguentemente i termini emittente e destinatario ), la storia della lingua, la cultura del parlato e dello scritto. Si cerca insomma di avvicinare il Linguaggio all'alunno e di sviluppare in lui non solo la competenza grammaticale ma anche quella comunicativa, attiva e passiva.

Il contributo mette a fuoco la realtà linguistica italiana attraverso la produzione artistica di due autori, Angelo Beolco (1496?–1542), detto Ruzante, e Andrea Zanzotto (1921–2011), che consentono di penetrare profondamente nella “questione della lingua” di due periodi cronologicamente lontani, ma essenzialmente collegati tra loro da una costante: la diglossia che, da sempre, caratterizza quell’intarsio linguistico e culturale che è l’Italia. In definitiva, raccogliendo l’invito contenuto nel titolo del convegno, la sfida che può venire dall’approccio a questi due autori è quella di consentire una più completa conoscenza dell’italianità.Odbicie włoskiej diglosji w produkcji literackiej: złożoność socjolingwistyczna dialektuweneckiego odzwierciedlona w tekstach literackich Ruzantego i ZanzottaArtykuł pokazuje złożoność rzeczywistości językowej Włoch poprzez analizę dzieł dwóch pisarzy: Angelo Beolco (1496?–1542), zwanego „Ruzante”, oraz Andrei Zanzotto (1921–2011). Ich twórczość, pochodząca z odległych od siebie epok, łączy wspólna cecha – diglosja, która od zawsze była charakterystyczna dla pejzażu językowego Włoch. Fakt, że obydwaj autorzy ukazują w swojej twórczości złożony repertuar językowy, rzuca światło na wielowiekową dyskusję o kwestii językowej we Włoszech.

Questo articolo tratta della varietà di italiano utilizzata nella traduzione dalle lingue classiche – il cosiddetto ‘traduttese classico’ –, analizzandone le proprietà linguistiche e sociolinguistiche e sostenendone un inquadramento nel diasistema dell’italiano contemporaneo quale sottocodice (Berruto, 1987). Caratterizzato da un alto grado di formalità e formalizzazione, il traduttese segna una tendenza opposta su tutti gli assi di variazione sociolinguistica a quella che motiva il processo attuale di ristandardizzazione dell’italiano, tipicamente orientato ad accogliere tratti substandard. Il lavoro è così articolato: il paragrafo 1 contiene un’introduzione in cui si inquadra la nozione di ‘traduttese classico’; il paragrafo 2 ne rende un profilo socio-funzionale, chiarendo quali circostanze determinano la sua emersione; il paragrafo 3 ne individua i tratti linguistici peculiari; il paragrafo 4 argomenta l’appartenenza del traduttese al numero dei sottocodici del diasistema italiano e il paragrafo 5 ospita delle brevi conclusioni; infine, il paragrafo 6. raffronta le proprietà del traduttese e quelle dell’italiano neostandard.
 
 Socio-linguistic profiles of Italian ‘versions’: is classical translanguese a subcode?
 This article deals with the variety of Italian used in translation from classical languages – the so-called ‘classical translanguese’ –, analyzing its linguistic and sociolinguistic properties and arguing for its inclusion in the diasystem of contemporary Italian as a subcode (Berruto, 1987). Characterized by a high degree of formality and formalization, translanguese marks an opposite trend on all axes of socio-linguistic variation with respect to the current re-standardization process of Italian, typically oriented to accommodate sub-standard traits. The paper is articulated as follows: paragraph 1 contains an introduction in which the notion of ‘classic translanguese’ is framed; paragraph 2 gives a socio-functional profile, clarifying which circumstances determine its emergence; paragraph 3 identifies its peculiar linguistic features; paragraph 4 argues that translanguese should be considered a subcode of the Italian diasystem and paragraph 5 contains brief conclusions; finally, paragraph 6 compares the properties of translanguese and neo-standard Italian.

This article questions the long-standing assumption that heritage Italian can be characterized as italiano popolare on account of a number of similar non-standard features. It is argued that this is a problematic comparison due to some methodological lacunae in research into heritage Italian and that a systematic corpus-based analysis is needed in order to reveal its underlying sociolinguistic dynamics. This study focuses on a corpus of Italian spoken by the Italian community in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) and presents a multivariate analysis of a set of morphosyntactic simplification features that have been labelled as typical of italiano popolare. It will be shown that the features of heritage Italian clearly correlate to a set of traditional language contact variables (e.g., contact with the home language and intergenerational transmission). This variation pattern shows that heritage Italian can no longer be connected to italiano popolare in the original sense of the term (viz. an interlanguage or diastratically lower regional Italian).

Abstract:
The study discusses the impact of E. Coseriu (1921-2002), a prominent 20th century linguist, an expert in language theory and philosophy, on the development of language restandardization theory in modern Italy. E. Coseriu proposed a model of living language that accounts for its basic property - variability, which allows to solve the so-called paradox of language change widely discussed in post-saussurean linguistics and to produce a complex description of language system, norm, and speech in their mutual correlation. The analysis presented in the paper shows how the system of language variation parameters (diachrony, diatopy, diastraty, and diaphasy) constituted the theoretical basis for describing the process of restandardization typical of Modern Italian since the last decades of the 20th century. Modern Italian, also known as Italiano neo-standard, fulfils all the communicative functions, is used both in speech and in writing in all speech genres and registers, and is L1 for more than a half of Italy’s population. This language situation, however, is relatively new: up to mid-20th century the majority of Italians were bilingual, and the dialects of Italy functioned as their L1 and as means of informal communication. The widening of use of Standard Italian proceeded alongside with its stylistic diversification and the adaptation of its pragmatic and stylistic potential for informal, colloquial use, which called in question the status of certain structures, previously regarded as substandard ones. The analysis of E. Coseriu’s language variation theory as applied to the Italian language allows to classify modern Italian sociolinguistics and historical language studies as developing the functional trend typical of European linguistics.

Abstract:
In modern sociolinguistics the term "italiano neostandard" ("Neo-standard Italian") has been in use for a few decades already. However, in Russian linguistic terminology it still lacks a well-established translation equivalent. The research objective was to prove that it has deeply-rooted theoretical premises. Until the second part of the XX century, literary Italian (italiano standard) was mainly used in writing by intellectual élite, and for centuries (since XVI c.) its codified norm altered little – if at all – and was only apt for high-flown language (that is what the term "Standard Italian" refers to). In modern Italy, literary language has a wide range of functions and uses, and its variation patterns have considerably changed. The new language norm typical of Neo-standard Italian is much more versatile: it takes into account stylistic, regional, and social parameters of language variation. With all that in mind, the concept of Neo-standard Italian still remains ambiguous in the sense that its relationship with Standard Italian can be seen both as one ousting the other and as their coexistence. The problem of finding a suitable translation equivalent for the term "Neo-standard Italian", thus, reflects the dubious character of the concept itself.

Il lavoro – che vuole essere un contributo agli studi su lingua italiana, televisione e divulgazione linguistica - si occupa del programma tematico sull’italiano Le parole per dirlo, in onda ogni domenica mattina su Rai 3 dal mese di ottobre 2020, condotto da Noemi Gherrero con la partecipazione dei linguisti Valeria Della Valle e Giuseppe Patota. Le parole per dirlo è al momento in tv l’unica trasmissione interamente dedicata alla lingua italiana, dato significativo tanto più in un contesto televisivo che dedica ai programmi linguistici uno spazio di gran lunga inferiore a quello occupato da altri generi della divulgazione scientifico-culturale.
 Il lavoro presenta il programma in seno alla programmazione linguistica Rai dagli esordi (metà degli anni ‘50 del ‘900) a oggi e a correlati fattori storico-culturali, sociolinguistici, comunicativi (fasi e caratteri del mezzo televisivo e sua evoluzione tecnologica; missione di servizio pubblico della Rai; la “lingua” come oggetto di informazione culturale), descrive struttura delle puntate e aspetti crossmediali, illustra le strategie della divulgazione e i temi linguistici privilegiati, anche con focus su puntate specifiche, riportate secondo gli usuali criteri di trascrizione del parlato televisivo. Osservazioni su lingua e tecniche divulgative si basano su un totale di 28 ore e 20 minuti di materiali audiovisivi.
 The essay deals with a thematic programme on the Italian language, Le parole per dirlo, broadcast every Sunday morning on Rai 3 since October 2020. The programme is presented by Noemi Gherrero with the participation of two linguists, prof. Valeria Della Valle and prof. Giuseppe Patota and it is currently the only TV programme entirely dedicated to the Italian language (a very significant fact in a television programming scenario in which programmes about the Italian language are given less space than other scientific and cultural outreach programmes).
 The work presents the programme within the Rai linguistic programming from its beginnings (mid 1950s) to the present day and takes into consideration historical-cultural, sociolinguistic and communicative factors (phases and characteristics of the television medium and its technological evolution; Rai's public service mission; "language" as an object of cultural information). It describes then the structure of the episodes and cross-media aspects, the strategies of dissemination and the discussed linguistic themes: the analysis focuses on specific episodes, reported according to the usual criteria of transcription of television speech. Observations on language and dissemination techniques are based on a total of 28 hours and 20 minutes of audiovisual materials.

Sempre più bambini e giovani di origine non italiana sono presenti nelle scuole italiane: il modello di integrazione perseguito in Italia vuole rispettare le differenze culturali e la lingua è uno degli elementi chiave di questo processo. La ricerca ha interessato due province del Piemonte Orientale: Biella e Vercelli. Utilizzando un approccio sociolinguistico e sociologico, è stato condotto uno studio attraverso la somministrazione di questionari riguardanti la lingua e l'identità, la motivazione all'integrazione, la percezione e l'atteggiamento verso la propria lingua / cultura di origine e la lingua / cultura italiana.. Il quadro che emerge presenta atteggiamenti a volte ambigui che si possono definire quasi come una "sospensione" tra il desiderio di "italianizzazione" e la conservazione delle proprie radici. La ricerca pone domande stringenti che le scuole e la società sono chiamate ad affrontare sulla costruzione (o ricostruzione) della propria identità

I testi per musica offrono molteplici spunti e stimoli per l'insegnamento e l'apprendimento della lingua italiana. I due generi principali, l'opera lirica e la canzone, consentono di approfondire anche lo sviluppo storico del nostro idioma e di affrontare le varietà stilistiche e sociolinguistiche del passato e del presente; inoltre il modo di fruizione principale e più genuino di questi testi verbali (quello che, appunto, li unisce all'esecuzione canora e musicale) è per sua natura multimodale, tratto che in anni più recenti ha acquisito ulteriori potenzialità grazie allo sviluppo della multimedialità. Senza contare che a partire sia dall'opera lirica sia dalla canzone gli insegnanti possono elaborare dei percorsi interdisciplinari pensati appositamente per le diverse categorie di studenti a cui di volta in volta si rivolgono. Il saggio presenta un esempio concreto di analisi linguistica e di una possibile applicazione didattica di natura multimodale, multimediale e interdisciplinare prendendo in esame l'opera che ha inaugurato la stagione 2021-2022 del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, il Macbeth di Giuseppe Verdi, e le canzoni prime classificate al Festival di Sanremo dello stesso anno: una scelta sperimentata in alcuni corsi accademici e che ha dato esiti positivi perché più aderente e vicina al contesto culturale, informativo e massmediatico in cui gli studenti sono immersi. Bel-canto and songs in teaching Italian as L1, L2 and LS. General considerations and teaching experiences Texts written to be sung offer many possibilities to teach and learn the Italian language in a pleasant way. The two main genres of these texts for music - opera and song - also allow to deepen the historical development and the stylistic and sociolinguistic varieties of the Italian language. Multimodality is an intrinsic feature of the fruition of sung texts; furthermore, in recent years the development of multimedia has offered new possibilities in this direction. In addition, both opera and song allow us to deal with interdisciplinary arguments. The paper presents an example of linguistic analysis and a possible multimodal, multimedia and interdisciplinary didactic application: it analyzes the opera that inaugurated the 2021-2022 season of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi, and the first classified songs at the Sanremo Festival of the same year. This choice has been tested in some academic courses, giving positive feedback: in fact, the students approached these texts with greater interest because they considered them to be closer to the cultural and informative context they experience every day.

This contribution presents the different situations of Italian in the cantons of Ticino (where a gradual reduction in dialectophony is taking place) and Graubünden (where the dialect is being preserved), as well as the standardisation of Swiss Italian, which is taking place through the process of 'standard by mere usage' (AMMON, 2003, p. 2). A number of important theoretical concepts are brought up to date here in a very enlightening way: the concept of dilalie (BERRUTO, 1987) to describe the functional overlap between two varieties of a language, the pluricentricity of languages (CLYNE, 1989), models of standardisation of pluricentric languages (AMMON, 1989) and the representation of the bicentricity (AUER, 2005) of Italian (Italy and Switzerland).

Facendo riferimento alla loro etimologia latina nonché al corpus terminologico plurilingue tratto dalla Classificazione ICD-10 dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, gli autori metteranno in evidenza i problemi traduttivi di diverse categorie di entità nosologiche analizzando i loro nomi dal punto di vista sociolinguistico, tra i quali i termini eponimici, derivati dotti e popolari, forme greche, latine e latineggianti. Using key chapters from Milton Hatoum’s Dois Irmãos (2000), we set about testing John Milton’s hypothesis (2011) that grammatically more similar languages would yield fewer adaptations in translation. Our sample, on the contrary, revealed that the sociolinguistically closer Italian translation varied more than the more distant English version, and in equidistant sociolinguistic cases involving slang and indigenous loanwords, the Italian version offered more audience-appropriate (i.e. acceptable) variations. It could be that the closeness of the languages (Portuguese-Italian), combined with the translator’s sociolinguistic understanding may, instead, have provided a platform for both more “acceptable” (freer) and more “adequate” (“equivalent”) structures.

In a downtown Border City, Ontario coffee shop, I interviewed Carlo, an Italian-Canadian man in his late 50s. He explained that his children, who are in their 20s, do not demonstrate much productive use of Italian, but that they have maintained the language in that they understand their grandparents' Italian and can imitate their Italian-accented English. I refer to the linguistic phenomenon that Carlo mentions as Stylized Italian English (SIE), which is the primary focus of this paper.This paper begins with a brief ethnographic and linguistic background of the community and participants. I then explore specific features of Stylized Italian English as it is used in multigenerational family interactions, showing that second and third generation family members use SIE to index Italianness. Finally, I discuss SIE within larger contexts of language shift and maintenance and language contact research.

Abstract This article explores the linguistic and meta-linguistic heritage of the Italian mine workers families that arrived in Belgian Limburg after the Second World War. On the basis of historical research, discourse analysis of texts and sociolinguistic interviews, I describe how the complex linguistic integration of first-generation migrants, that was scarcely noticed and debated until the 1960s, has been picked up and enregistered by second- and third-generation Italians in Limburg. I show how first generation’s hybrid linguistic practices have come to be linked to one particular mining city, the city of Genk, and enregistered as an urban vernacular of this place, although they still refer to the larger historical background they are rooted in. I explain this heritage in three steps. First, I describe the complex contact-linguistic situation of first-generation miners’ families. I will then present the linguistic consequences of this situation, by describing the emergence of a multilingual, but mainly French-based mining jargon among Flemish and foreign miners. In a third step, I place the social and linguistic situation of first-generation miners at the root of the linguistic practices of second- and third-generation Italians in Limburg.

This article discusses the ways in which pedagogical translation into Italian can be a valuable tool in enhancing the students’ proficiency, thus contributing to the still underdeveloped research on effective translation teaching practices in the Italian language classroom. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to Italian teaching and based on empirical data collected from translation into Italian workshops delivered to undergraduate Modern Languages students at the University of Hull (UK), this article examines the ways in which drawing on translation studies teaching models can help students to enhance their communicative language competences. Particular attention is paid to pragmatic, sociolinguistic and pluricultural competences, which are crucial in the formation of future language professionals as cultural mediators. More specifically, the discussion consists of the evaluation of two interrelated translation teaching models (Nord 1991/2005, 1997a/2018; Malmkjær 1998) based on a qualitative analysis of the students’ reflections through the lens of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) competence model. The results indicate that drawing on translation studies teaching models can help to teach translation into Italian (which is usually perceived challenging by students) as a purposeful activity, thus enhancing the learners’ communicative ability in real life, as recommended by the CEFR.
 
 L’insegnamento della traduzione dall’inglese all’italiano come utile attività nella classe di lingua: uno studio empirico
 L’articolo prende in esame metodi attraverso cui la traduzione pedagogica verso l’italiano può essere usata come un valido strumento per potenziare le competenze linguistiche di studenti e studentesse. A tal proposito, si pone l’obiettivo di offrire un contributo alla ricerca tuttora in fase di espansione su come insegnare a studenti e studentesse di lingue a tradurre verso l’italiano in modo efficace. Attraverso un approccio interdisciplinare alla didattica dell’italiano e sulla base di dati raccolti durante delle lezioni di traduzione verso l’italiano rivolte e studenti e studentesse di Modern Languages della University of Hull (Regno Unito), il presente studio empirico esamina come rifarsi a modelli di insegnamento elaborati da due studiose di Translation Studies possa aiutare studenti e studentesse di italiano a potenziare le proprie competenze linguistico-comunicative. Particolare attenzione è posta sulle competenze sociolinguistiche, pragmatiche e pluriculturali, fondamentali nel formare professionisti/e in ambito linguistico in grado di agire come mediatori/trici culturali. Nello specifico, lo studio consiste nell’esaminare due modelli correlati (Nord, 1991/2005, 1997a/2018; Malmkjær, 1998) in seguito a riflessioni di studenti e studentesse analizzate qualitativamente in base ai descrittori esemplificativi del Quadro comune di riferimento per la conoscenza delle lingue (QCER). I risultati suggeriscono che rifarsi a modelli di insegnamento elaborati da studiosi/e di Translation Studies può aiutare a presentare la traduzione verso l’italiano come un’attività utile, non fine a se stessa e non solo impegnativa come viene di solito percepita da studenti e studentesse. Stando ai risultati, ciò aiuta infine a potenziare la capacità di comunicare in situazioni di vita reale come proposto dal QCER.

L’approccio biografico, sempre più diffuso in letteratura e caratterizzato da «un grado di granularità molto significativo a livello qualitativo» (Franceschini, Veronesi, 2016), permette di assumere una prospettiva emica rispetto alle percezioni e autorappresentazioni dei parlanti. Combinando i metodi dell'intervista narrativa e dell'autoritratto linguistico, il presente contributo si propone di indagare il vissuto di due gruppi di parlanti germanofoni inseriti nel peculiare contesto sociolinguistico altoatesino: da un lato persone provenienti dalla Germania che abitano in Alto Adige, dall'altra persone sudtirolesi di lingua tedesca. Dopo una discussione teorico-metodologica sull'aspetto collettivo e co-costruito delle autobiografie linguistiche, si presenteranno i risultati della ricerca, con una particolare attenzione alla percezione dell'italiano da parte degli informatori e alle rappresentazioni dei loro percorsi di apprendimento.
 
 “My hands are yellow because it’s Italian”: linguistic biographies and self-representations of German speakers in Alto Adige 
 The biographical approach, increasingly popular in the literature and characterized by “a very significant degree of granularity at the qualitative level” (Franceschini, Veronesi, 2016), allows us to take an emic perspective with respect to speakers’ perceptions and self-representations. Combining narrative interview methods and linguistic self-portraits, this contribution aims to investigate the experiences of two groups of German-speaking speakers embedded in the peculiar sociolinguistic context of South Tyrol: on the one hand, people from Germany who live in South Tyrol, and on the other hand, German-speaking South Tyroleans. Following a theoretical-methodological discussion on the collective and co-constructed aspect of linguistic autobiographies, the research results will be presented, with particular attention to the perception of Italian by the informants and the representations of their learning paths.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate two Francoprovençal speaking communities in the Italian region of Apulia, Faeto and Celle di St. Vito. Despite the regional neighborhood of the two towns, and their common isolation from other Francoprovençal speaking communities, their sociolinguistic conditions are deeply different. They differ in reference to the functional distribution of the languages of the repertoire and speakers’ language uses, and in reference to the degree of ‘permeability’ of Francoprovençal varieties towards Italian and its dialects. The repertoire composition and the relationship between the codes have a key role both for minority language maintenance and for language contact processes. In this perspective, I analyse some language contact phenomena in a sample of speakers discourse. I report correlations between the choice of different code-mixing strategies and three sociolinguistic variables (age, sex and village), but not with occupation.

Two experiments test the existence of prejudicial attitudes toward nonnative Italian speech (specifically Chinese-accented Italian) within Tuscany’s high schools, among teachers and student samples. The research explores and integrates different methodologies: explicit inquiry (overt questionnaires) as well as implicit tests (Implicit Association Test protocol). The results outlined the existence of significant implicit negative attitudes toward Chinese-accented Italian and established the discrepancy between explicit and implicit attitudes. The discussion focuses on the sociolinguistic implications of these results, with respect to educational aspects and to future directions for research.

AbstractWe investigated changes in self-representation depending on language in Friulian–Italian bilinguals. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Junior-TCI were administered respectively to 24 adults and 25 children, both in Friulian and in Italian, at a distance of two weeks from each other. Variations in TCI were detected: both adults and children scored higher in Self-Directedness (a character trait) when using Italian than Friulian. Similar findings were observed for Novelty-Seeking (a temperament trait) in children and Cooperativeness (another character trait) in adults. Results are discussed considering previous studies on bilingualism and within the frame of the Friulian sociolinguistic context.

ABSTRACTThis article considers the theoretical and practical relationship between core linguistics and sociolinguistics in relation to the emergence of Principles and Parameters Theory. Parameters were introduced into core Chomskyan linguistics in an effort to account for variation between languages. However, as we argue – and as has long been known in sociolinguistics – languages (French, Italian etc.) are social rather than abstract products. In this sense, core linguistics may need to pay more attention than it has in the past to aspects of actual variation in order to understand the limits and range of parameters. Thus we argue that dialects of languages in themselves have parameters, and as such may be defined within parametric limits. Here we believe there is something of interest to sociolinguists, in terms both of structural definitions and of overall historical development. In general, then, while variation has always been central to sociolinguistics, it is now central, in one sense, to core linguistics; and here we have the opportunity to explore ways in which sociolinguistics and core linguistics may relate to each other in their interest in variation. Abstract:
A sociolinguistic study is made of the Maltese language to compare it to the Algerian language. Algerian is not the official language in Algeria, although it is the national one, and in this article an empirical study is undertaken to question the particularities of Algerian and its formation, comparing it with Maltese which has itself gained official status. Maltese, or “the language of the kitchen” as it is known, has gained important status on the island after decades of foreign occupation and linguistic influence from various civilizations that left palpable paw prints on the Mediterranean island. Maltese has managed to successfully confirm its linguistic identity, through a noticeable influence of Arabic, Italian and English amongst other languages that have imposed themselves and had a hand in forming the Maltese language. A sociolinguistic and historical study is made to explain the formation of Algerian comparing it to Maltese and the influence of history in both languages. A historical study is made to compare and observe the historic diachronic of both countries, and we compare the influence of foreign languages in Algeria and Malta. Likewise, an empirical study is undertaken to question the use of Algerian from various angles, and to examine the linguistic identity in Algeria.

Multiple interrogatives exhibit cross-linguistic variation from a typological point of view. Standard Italian, in particular, is considered to be a language disallowing these constructions, an analysis based on the interaction between whPs and focused constituents in this language. I argue that previous analyses of multiple wh-questions in Italian need to be integrated with novel data, and that these structures are at least marginally acceptable. Specifically, I illustrate data from a preliminary experiment involving acceptability judgements on a 5-point Likert scale that tested whether native Italian speakers consider multiple interrogatives acceptable. While this is still a preliminary investigation, the results indicate that younger native Italian speakers tend to accept these constructions. I suggest that the presence of two whPs within the same clause in Italian can be analyzed as a language contact phenomenon, with English being the source language, in line with the sociolinguistic literature on this topic.

This article examines the mechanisms involved in the formation of regional Italian from the perspective of contact linguistics. Varieties of regional Italian containing elements of both local dialects and Standard Italian (SI) are spoken throughout Italy; this paper focuses primarily on Salento, a southern region characterized by a strong bilingual environment. The aim is to investigate the interaction between a dialect and a standard language, as well as the concrete linguistic mechanisms involved. The historical background of the acquisition of SI and its diffusion throughout the national territory are considered crucial moments in language transmission. Sociolinguistic characteristics of speakers are also analyzed, as are three types of constructions: change of verb transitivity, use of polyvalent complementizer, and gerunds. The analysis confirms that the spoken variety of Italian, regional Italian, is a result of contact-induced change of SI influenced by the local dialect, Salentino.

Entre o século XIX e SS, um milhão e meio de italianos emigraram ao Brasil. Trata-se de um fenômeno que obrigou seus protagonistas a vive longas dolorosas e, frequentemente, definitivas separações de familiares e das próprias comunidades. Uma experiência que começou com a travessia oceânica, uma espécie de ritual de passagem no qual se concentra simbolicamente a condição de migrante, caracterizado pelo sentido de desarraigamento. Mais precisamente, os sinais tangíveis deste processo de fragmentação da identidade e das tentativas de recomposição, cansativamente mas obstinadamente realizadas, são as cartas que permitem restabelecer um ponto de continuidade com o passado e com a própria comunidade de origem. Os navios singravam os mares com mercadorias e homens, acompanhados por uma esteira de palavras e de escritos que hoje constituem um testemunho precioso e, por alguns aspectos, insubstituível para tentar reconstruir momentos da história da língua italiana no seu contato com a língua portuguesa. Nesse artigo, analisa-se uma tipologia particular dessas cartas: as cartas de chamada. Interferências linguisticas e aspectos sociolinguisticos da lingua escrita nesses documentos constituem um prisma valioso para analisar intercâmbios devidos ao contato entre as duas culturas.

An increasing amount of sociolinguistic research has been concentrated on diachronic idiolect change: the change of an individual’s dialect over time. This paper adds to this growing topic by analyzing the English idiolect change of Giada De Laurentiis, a heritage speaker of Italian. The study analyzes De Laurentiis’ LOT, START, and GOAT vowels, as well as the voice onset time (VOT) of voiceless stops [k] and [p] by measuring the utterances of the code-switched word ‘mascarpone’ across 20 seasons on television. The data reflect the influence of L2 US English (rhoticity, diphthongization, lengthened VOTs) on heritage Italian in De Laurentiis’ idiolect.

Across languages of the world the /r/ sound is known for its variability. This variability has been investigated using articulatory models as well as in sociolinguistic studies. The current study investigates to what extent /r/ is a marker of a bilingual’s dominant language. To this end, a reading task was carried out by bilingual speakers from South Tyrol, who produce /r/ differently according to whether they dominantly speak Tyrolean or Italian. The recorded reading data were subsequently used in a perception experiment to investigate whether South Tyrolean bilingual listeners are able to identify the dominant language of the speaker. Results indicate that listeners use /r/ as a cue to determine the dominant language of the speaker whilst relying on articulatory distinctions between the variants. It is furthermore shown that /r/ correlates with three interdependent variables: the sociolinguistic background of the speakers, their speech production, and how their speech is perceived.

This paper focuses on the semiotic foundations of sociolinguistics. Starting from the definition of “sociolinguistics” given by the philosopher Adam Schaff, the paper examines in particular the notion of “critical sociolinguistics” as theorized by the Italian semiotician Ferruccio Rossi-Landi. The basis of the social dimension of language are to be found in what Rossi-Landi calls “social reproduction” which regards both verbal and non-verbal signs. Saussure’s notion of langue can be considered in this way, with reference not only to his Course of General Linguistics, but also to his Harvard Manuscripts.The paper goes on trying also to understand Roland Barthes’s provocative definition of semiology as a part of linguistics (and not vice-versa) as well as developing the notion of communication-production in this perspective. Some articles of Roman Jakobson of the sixties allow us to reflect in a manner which we now call “socio-semiotic” on the processes of transformation of the “organic” signs into signs of a new type, which articulate the relationship between organic and instrumental. In this sense, socio-linguistics is intended as being sociosemiotics, without prejudice to the fact that the reference area must be human, since semiotics also has the prerogative of referring to the world of non-human vital signs.Socio-linguistics as socio-semiotics assumes the role of a “frontier” science, in the dual sense that it is not only on the border between science of language and the anthropological and social sciences, but also that it can be constructed in a movement of continual “crossing frontiers” and of “contamination” between languages and disciplinary environments.

Some defining moments in the history of the Italian language (the Late Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Unifica- tion of Italy) are here analyzed and discussed in terms of the focusing / diffusion distinction . Moreover, the sociolinguistic situation of contemporary Italian is depicted by fitting these concepts into a Coserian framework, involving such notions as habla (speech), norma (norm) and sistema (system).

This paper explores the acquisitional patterns of the Italian ci morpheme and its potential role as a clinical marker for Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in Italian-speaking children, taking into account its distributional, sociolinguistic, and typological properties. To this purpose, we (i) administered a test for the elicited production of clitic pronouns in Italian – which we will refer to as “T-PEC” in the following – to 126 school-aged Italian speakers and (ii) developed a novel test focused on the ci morpheme in order to investigate its production by five-year-old typically developing children. The results and their theoretical interpretations are of particular interest since they could shed light on the acquisition of the morpheme, thus helping understand both typical and atypical grammar development. Given the continuity of the two, it could also be applied to the diagnosis and rehabilitation of DLD, which remains a major challenge for child neuropsychiatrists, psychologists, and speech-language therapists.

This essay showcases the results of a survey conducted on a sample of Italian speakers which focused on their perception of languages. The research, carried out in the second half of 2019, has enabled corroborating the initial hypothesis about the existence of preconceptions and stereotypes associated with the perception of foreign languages and cultures (Elman & McClelland 1986) by Italian people. In particular, a questionnaire was used to clarify which adjectives are commonly associated with selected foreign languages, in order to identify certain trends and stereotypes. The survey is based on ethnolinguistic and language education studies (Cardona 2006), and was performed through data collection techniques used in ethnography and sociolinguistics (Tagliamonte 2006).

As a crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe, throughout its history Friuli Venezia Giulia has always been a strategic political and economic site and has had several rulers (German patriarchs, Venetians, etc.). Consequently, the language of the ruling classes usually differed from that of the common people. Friulian was mostly considered the language of the lower classes and restricted to non-official and familiar circumstances. This attitude still persists today towards Italian, the official language, and some people feel uncomfortable using Friulian on official and formal occasions. Friulian speakers can, however, be considered bilingual speakers of Italian and Friulian. In fact, the use of Friulian, also in official contexts has always been an outstanding cultural and social issue which has raised very strong feelings both in favour of and against it. This essay presents and discusses plurilingualism and language contact in Friuli Venezia Giulia and focuses on the relations among the Friulian language and the other historical minorities (such as the Slovene and the German idioms) and the ‘new’ minorities (the so-called immigrant languages). It also describes the important language contact phenomena between Friulian and Italian which constitute an interesting sociolinguistic reality since the two languages are not always in opposition. The aim is to present a sociolinguistic study which wants to be a useful tool for measuring and assessing the state of languages in the Friulian community. It can also provide crucial information to those who are concerned with linguistic policy and planning, by offering hints that will enable them to develop appropriate actions within this protected territory.
