Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Institutions of higher learning have always had relationships with their surrounding communities. The current study focuses on the research relationship that the University of Venda has with its surrounding community. The literature shows that although the nature of the relationship takes different forms, each university has a certain kind of a relationship with the surrounding community. In this study, I used the qualitative approach and I conducted one focus group and four individual interviews. I explored the research needs of the communities surrounding the University of Venda and the ways in which they think the university could address those needs. The findings of this study revealed that the communities are not at all happy with the services that are rendered by the university. They show that instead of benefiting from its existence within their communities, they are even more disadvantaged by its presence. The respondents also identified certain schools and departments at the University of Venda that they felt could be of assistance to the surrounding communities if they redirected their research projects into applied research.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research into bullying has brought with it an awareness of many aspects of this phenomenon. Firstly, it has shown a distinction between various types of bullying and also how these are further delineated by means of gender. Secondly, by mere omission, it has shown the lack of research on bullying amongst girls. Bullying amongst girls is rife, however the research in this area is limited. The aims of this research are to further explore the complex nature of bullying amongst girls and to gain understanding of its impact; to use the perspectives of the participants to drive intervention and preventative strategies; to dispel the myths which support the practice of bullying; and to raise awareness of an invisible problem, thereby rendering it visible. This interpretive study explores bullying amongst girls by using the perspectives of Grade 5 girls in a parochial school in the Western Cape. The process of inquiry is embedded in the ecosystemic approach and constructivism, which emphasises the importance of context and the belief that knowledge is not passively received, but actively constructed on the basis of the experiences of an individual. Data was collected through the use of semi-structured recorded interviews with focus groups, which were then transcribed verbatim and categorised into themes. The themes which emerged include the varied and complex nature of bullying techniques and the effects of bullying. The main finding was that some girls have innate characteristics which help maintain bullying while others have characteristics which protect them from bullying. The environment also plays a large part in either maintaining bullying or protecting girls from bullying. The implication was that intervention and preventative strategies need to be based on these personal and contextual factors in order to effect change.

Abstract: This doctoral thesis deals with the social and technical background of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and their relation to diet in contemporary societies. In particular, it analyzes the historical trajectory and socio-technical aspects of the influential Framingham Heart Study -- an epidemiological research conducted for more than six decades in the United States with the objective of understanding cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors. From the perspective of Actor-Network Theory it demonstrates the process of mutual determination between the social context and the science related to cardiovascular diseases produced by Framingham researchers since the late 1940s. Methodologically, it was guided by historical and documentary methods, and interviews conducted between the years 2012 and 2013 in the United States. The first chapter presents an extensive discussion on health risks, official dietary guidelines and the growing importance of scientific discourse on the subject. The second chapter presents a historical review of the history of the Framingham Study. The third chapter proposes a model of socio-technical background for that epidemiological study, highlighting the conditions and contextual factors that led to its emergence and helped determining its characteristics. The fourth chapter describes the construction of the credibility of the study and its influence on contemporary perceptions about the risk factors, cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. Thus, the doctoral dissertation presents a critical discussion on contemporary forms of understanding risk, health, disease, and the relation between heart disease and diet, while demonstrating the inherently social nature of the Framingham Heart Study and the risk statements produced by epidemiology
