Introduction. Today, China and its foreign policy priorities largely determine global international politics. The PRC is one of the main partners of Russia. The need to understand the meanings that the Chinese leadership lays in its main political concepts determines the relevance of this study. The intensification of foreign policy demanded from the Chinese leadership an appropriate discourse, formalized in foreign policy concepts of a global scale. One of these concepts is the “Chinese Dream”. Its semantic content, at a first approximation, is opposed to the “American Dream”. If in the “Amer

This paper proposes a relational and critical sociological perspective on discourse analysis, in particular on so-called “Critical Discourse Analysis” (CDA). The main argument of this paper is that CDA has not yet been able to turn its critical perspective towards its own field. Meanwhile, neither CDA nor other schools of discourse analysis can still pretend not to be integral parts of the system legitimizing social hierarchies in modern societies. The paper argues that discourse analysis can be seen as highly dependent on power relations, both because of its institutional positioning and beca

Intimate relations are one of the most analysed aspects of human experience, and sociological interest in this topic has been sustained throughout the history of the discipline. This thesis begins with an analysis of existing sociological claims about intimate relations. It is suggested that these theoretical claims have largely coalesced around the issues of (a) the 'essential basis' of intimacy, and / or (b) the social and historical contexts in which such relationships are enacted. Abstract:
AbstractThere are still many sociologists who are skeptical of the findings of big data-based analysis of social-data, questioning the potential of this knowledge production and its contribution to the scientific discourse of sociology. The chapter shows that this tension can be addressed through the redefinition of the research methodological basis of sociology, by the organic incorporation of data science know-how into its methods; the combined application of qualitative and quantitative analysis; and, the use of knowledge-driven science instead of the data-driven approach. The theoretical, methodological, and topical pathways between traditional and computational sociology emerge gradually along the chapter, which also includes plenty of illustrative examples of research situated at the interplay between sociology and data science. As our overview shows, there are new possibilities for sociological research, which are, in some sense, just by-products of information science. We introduce recently developed methods, which can be applied to specific sociological problems outside the scope of business applications. We present sociological topics not yet studied in this area and show new insights the approach can offer to classical sociological questions. As our aim is to encourage sociologists to enter this field, we discuss the new methods on the base of the classic quantitative approach, using its concepts and terminology and addressing the question of how traditionally trained sociologists can acquire new skills.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the text to other connected discourses (intertextuality) and to historical and synchronic contexts with a view to demonstrate how the President can wield power in a democratic dispensation. The paper demonstrates that Declaration of Emergency Rule is indeed a political discourse. The paper also reveals that political powers are symmetric and asymmetric whereby the president may sound authoritative in one instance; he may sound appealing on the other. The paper also concludes that declaration of state of emergency is an embodiment of ideology, power and hierarchy. Lastly, the paper reveals that political discourses are couched bearing in mind the speaker, the listeners, and the context that gave birth to it including some sociological variables.

Full text
Abstract:
Overall, the general public tend to oppose excessive inequality and support a degree of redistribution as a matter of principle. However, differences in welfare attitudes are clearly observable between institutional regimes, ideological systems and socio-demographic groups. Drawing on analysis of the British Social Attitudes survey, this chapter begins by outlining how rich and poor citizens differ in terms of their attitudes towards welfare, inequality and social citizenship. It then turns to demonstrate how this attitudinal divergence is mediated by material position and the knowledge accumulated through lived experiences of inequality. The main body of the chapter pivots on a series of vignettes that are used as a heuristic to explore tacit and explicit intuitions about the structural determinants of agency and outcome. These vignettes were presented to those interviewed for this study to explore operational notions of justice, responsibility and fairness. The vignettes draw upon caricatures of individuals commonly (mis-) represented in policy discourse and the media: ‘the deserving workless poor’, ‘the undeserving workless poor’, ‘the deserving working poor’ and ‘the undeserving working rich’. The chapter demonstrates that affluence and deprivation engender distinct understandings, and explanations of social stratification that, in turn, affect attitudes towards welfare, rights and responsibilities.
