Although Europeans unquestioningly impacted the indigenous economies of the Americas, these original economies have shifted, but have never entirely disappeared. Early European witnesses of these tribal systems were often off the mark in interpreting their observations, especially when the data was forced into completely European models. With the secondary sources available, a less Eurocentric model of the 18th and 19th century Choctaw economy can be constructed. In this transborder ethnography, I worked with three households of undocumented people in Tucson, Arizona and traveled to their hometowns in Mexico, to better understand the context of their migration. By examining the lived experiences within a successful example of sharing, we can see its true value and acknowledge where other businesses fall short. Based on in-depth interviews with users of freecycle.org, this thesis illustrates the importance of motivation within a real sharing economy, highlighting the existence of generalized reciprocity, the value of community, and altruism between members of this gifting platform.

The principal analytical objective of this dissertation is the assessment of changes in the political economy of food production during the transition from socialism to capitalism in Russia and China. The dissertation is equally interested in the consequences of this transition for human welfare resulting from changes in the availability of food.
