Abstract:
This study analyzed the correlation between elementary school students’ body composition, physical activity, physical fitness, movement ability, and academic achievement. Movements ranged from simple actions to complex movements requiring executive functioning. In total, 110 fourth graders (60 boys, 50 girls) participated in this experiment. Body composition (BMI, % of body fat), physical activity (pedometer), physical fitness (muscular strength, endurance, power, flexibility, and VO2max), and complex movement abilities (Illinois Agility test, soda pop hand test, and soda pop foot test) were measured. Regression modeling of body composition and fitness/activity variables was able to account for 30.5% of the variation of total academic scores in females, but only 4.3% in males. No individual tests were reliably correlated with multiple academic outcomes in males. However, hand and foot soda pop times, as well as Illinois Agility scores, were repeatedly correlated with academic outcomes in females, each correlating with 4 of the 6 academic scores. Body composition and physical activity level did not correlate with academic achievement, and simple physical fitness showed a low correlation with academic achievement in both boys and girls. On the other hand, complex, cognitively demanding movements such as the Illinois Agility, soda pop hand, and soda pop foot tests had consistent correlations with academic achievement in girls, but not in boys.

Abstract:
Objective: Over the past several decades, increase in SSB consumption has coincided with increasing rates of obesity. This study evaluated the association between SSB consumption and BMI. Methods: FFQ data from NHANES 2003-2004 was used to examine 100% orange juice, sugar-sweetened fruit drinks, soft drinks, and other beverage consumption frequency vs. mean BMI. ANOVA, relative risk, and linear regression analyses were done. Results: ANOVA found significant differences in mean BMI across consumption frequencies for orange juice (p=.001), sugar-sweetened fruit drinks (p<.001), and soft drinks (p<.001). Increased risk of being obese was associated with increasing consumption frequency for orange juice (RR=1.282), sugar-sweetened fruit drinks (RR=1.417), and soft drinks (RR=1.749). Multiple linear regression found significant positive associations between mean BMI and sugar-sweetened fruit drinks (b=.056, p=.004) and soft drinks (b=.134, p=.001). Conclusion: This study found that mean BMI was positively associated with certain beverage consumption frequency (sugar-sweetened fruit drinks, soft drinks consumed during summer, soft drinks consumed during rest of year), but not others (100% orange juice). Fewer significant results were found when confounding variables were controlled. Drinking soft drinks or sugar-sweetened fruit drinks increased the risk of obesity more than drinking natural fruit juices.

Abstract:
This work describes an extension of the Microprobe functionality for detection and filtering of application protocols. The Microprobe is an embedded system designed for monitoring network links at speed 1 Gb/s without loosing any packets. The detection of application protocols requires using of computationally expensive operations, especially string lookup (usually based on regular expressions). Based on the study of several protocols (SMTP, POP3, FTP, SIP) a draft of a new architecture has been created. The new architecture splits this functionality between programmable logic FPGA and processor. The FPGA performs preprocessing of network traffic consisting of a lookup for user identifiers and protocol-specific patterns. The processor verifies that it is the requested communication. The processor does not need to process the entire network traffic but only the part pre-filtered in the FPGA. The software part is extended by a module for the analysis of SMTP which allows processing of more than 5,000 network flows per second. Support for other protocols can be added by an extension of the software part.

Abstract:
The PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor language (PHP) has evolved to a sophisticated mainstream programming language for rapid development of significant Web applications at major sites including Facebook.com, Wikipedia.org and Yahoo.com. Leading software vendors such as Oracle and IBM are rushing in providing tools that bridge their products to PHP. However, we have observed a gap in facilitating PHP to utilize Web services efficiently. This thesis reports our efforts in design and implementation of PHP applications that consume Web services. In doing so, I have proposed a framework facilitating PHP programs to utilize Web services with high performance capability. In addition, a number of Web service standards including WS-Addressing and those in WS-Security are integrated into my PHP implementation. Examples of using various Amazon Web Services are provided with details.

Biodiesel is a fuel obtained from vegetable oils, such as soy, castorbean, among others. The monoester of fatty acid of these oils have chains with mono, di and tri double connections. The presence of these insaturations are susceptible to oxidization. Antioxidants are substances able to prevent oxidization from oils, fats, fat foods, as well as esters of Alquila( biodiesel). The objective of this work is to summarize a new antioxidant from the Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) using the electrolysis technique. A current of 2 amperes was used in a single cell of only one group and two eletrodos of stainless steel 304 in a solution of methanol, together with the eletrolits: acetic acid, sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide, for two hours of agitation. The electrolysis products are characterized by the techniques of cromatography in a thin layer, spectroscopy of infrared and gravimetric analysis. The material was submitted to tests of oxidative stability made by the techniques of spectropy of impendancy and Rancimat (EN 14112). The analyses of characterization suggest that the polimerization of the electrolytic material ocurred. The application results of these materials as antioxidants of soy biodiesel showed that the order of the oxidative stability was obtained by both techniques used

Abstract:
For trace elements, such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), the bioavailability of these elements, Cu and Zn, in biosolids is important because both are essential elements and both are potential contaminants when biosolids are land applied. A greenhouse study was conducted in factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications on a soil treated with four rates of Cu (0, 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) and four rates of Zn (0, 150, 300, and 450 mg/kg) on celery plants to investigate the distribution and mobility of these elements as well as growth and antioxidant changes of celery. The results of antioxidant changes were inconclusive due to irregular changes with Zn and Cu applications. However, generally the results show that Cu did not affect superoxide dismutase (SOD) or peroxidase (POD) activities in most of the treatments. On the other hand, Zn stimulated SOD and POD activities in most of the treatments. The photosynthesis rate decreased with the applications of Cu and Zn at the rates above 100 and 300 mg/kg and increased in low Cu concentration (50 mg/kg) compared to S (soil without biosolid).

Abstract:
The emergence of new services which require an increasing bandwidth, as well as the growing number of users of such services, have introduced challenges to the network operators in regard to their capacity of supporting these demands with no penalty on the required quality of service, while keeping the costs at an acceptable level for the users. In this context, passive optical networks (PONs) have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years. In the long-reach configuration, PON networks allow for a consolidation of equipament usage, reducing operational and installation costs. One way to achieve this longer reach is by the insertion of optical amplifiers in the access network. Therefore, in our work, we have investigated several optical amplifier configurations, as well as their application in access networks, leading to longreach and high capacity network topologies. Experimental evaluations of an extender, based on semiconductor optical amplifiers, were carried out in the CPqD GPON network, under Goal 3 of GIGA Project, allowing the achievement of a Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) topology with 80km of extension and 128 users served by a single central office. Besides these experimental validations, were simulated computationally SOAs with optimized characteristics as well as systems using remotely pumped erbium-doped fibers, whereas in the latter were reached distances exceeding 100 km.

Abstract:
Developing Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications became increasingly important in software development. Nowadays, a large number of organizations from many different sectors and sizes depend more and more on collaboration between actors (individuals, groups, communities, etc. ) to perform their tacks. These P2P applications usually have a recursive behaviour that many modeling approaches cannot describe and analyze (e. G. Finite-state approaches). Another challenging issue in P2P application development is the tight coupling between application specification and the underlying P2P technologies and protocols. This forces software developers to make tedious efforts in finding and understanding detailed knowledge about P2P low level concerns. Moreover, this tight coupling constraints applications to run in a changeless runtime environment. Consequently, choosing (for example) another protocol at runtime to meet a new requirement becomes very difficult. Besides these previous issues, P2P applications are usually specified with a weak ability to delegate computing activities between peers, and especially focus on data sharing and storage. Thus, it is not able to take full advantages of the computing power of the underlying P2P network. In this thesis, we present an approach that combines component – and service-oriented development with well-understood methods and techniques from the fields of Attribute Grammars and Data-Flow Analysis (commonly used in compiler construction) in order to offer greater ease in the specification, analysis and deployment of applications ion P2P architecture. This approach embodies : i) A formal language called DDF (Data-Dependency Formalism) to specify applications and construct their Data-Dependency Graphs (DDGs). A DDG has been defined to be an abstract representation of applications. Ii) An analysis method that uses DDG to infer and compute various properties, including some properties that model checkers cannot compute if the system presents recursive behaviour. Iii) A component-based service middleware called SON (Shared-data Overlay Network) to develop and execute applications within P2P architecture without the stress of dealing with P2P low level complexity. Thanks to SON’s automatic generation

Abstract:
Jean Toomer worked as a soda jerk in high school over his grandmother’s objections and found inspiration in the soda fountain. Through it, he derived a metaphorical alternative to the one-drop rule, imagining instead essences that effervesced past the skin and colors that exceeded the monochromatic division of black and white. In Toomer’s masterpiece of experimental modernism, Cane (1923), the trope of liquid sugar provides a model for formal experimentation and fluid identities. Toomer follows this trope from cane syrup to soda pop, from copper boiling pots to Chero-Cola advertisements. In the last section of Cane, Toomer imagines a white man transformed into “a purple fluid, carbon-charged,” an image that he uses to rebuke the segregated culture of the urban North.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the various attempts to distance the past became the condition of Hungary for its return in the form of nostalgia for socialist mass and popular culture. It discusses the remains of socialism from anachronistic monuments and devalued historical narratives to the detritus of an everyday life now on the brink of vanishing, such as candy bars and soda pop. Despite appearances, this nostalgia did not represent a wistful desire to return to the previous era nor simply to the gleeful impulse to laugh at state socialist kitsch found years earlier. The chapter explains the detachment of fond communal memories of certain objects from the political system that produced them. It points out the ironic invocation of the international discourse of cultural heritage that legitimate the trash of the previous era and enabled Hungarians to redefine themselves as both savvy capitalist consumers and cultured democratic citizens.

Abstract:
Supporting global scientific collaborations are becoming more important due to the increasing complexity of modern scientific problems as well as the need for sharing specialized expensive instruments and huge amount of data required for solving these problems. The combination of Grid computing and Web-based architecture has been a common technological architecture employed to address the need for an integrated environment for scientific collaborations. However, this approach is subjected to a certain level of centralized administration and control. This has been seen as inflexible and does not scale well with respect to the heterogeneity of distributed user communities. This chapter introduces an orchestration of P2P and Grid computing for supporting distributed scientific collaborations. In the resulted architecture, a P2P collaborative environment is used for heterogeneous users to collaborate and tap into large-scale computational resources and experimental datasets in the Grid computing environment. The service oriented architecture is used as a means of integrating these two environments.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The need for reduced order models (ROMs) has become considerable higher with the increasing technological advances that allows one to model complex dynamical systems. When using ROMs, the following two questions always arise: 1) “What is the lowest dimensional ROM?” and 2) “How well does the ROM capture the dynamics of the full scale system model?” This paper considers the newly developed concepts the authors refer to as subspace robustness — the ROM is valid over a range of initial conditions, forcing functions, and system parameters — and dynamical consistency — the ROM embeds the nonlinear manifold — which quanitatively answers each question. An eighteen degree-of-freedom pinned-pinned beam which is supported by two nonlinear springs is forced periodically and stochastically for building ROMs. Smooth and proper orthogonal decompositions (SOD and POD, respectively) based ROMs are dynamically consistent in four or greater dimensions. In the strictest sense POD-based ROMs are not considered coherent whereas, SOD-based ROMs are coherent in roughly five dimesions and greater. Is is shown that in the periodically forced case, the full scale dynamics are captured in a five-dimensional POD and SOD-based ROM. For the randomly forced case, POD and SOD-based ROMs need three dimensions but SOD captures the dynamics better in a lower-dimensional space. When the ROM is developed from a different set of initial conditions and forcing values, SOD outperforms POD in periodic forcing case and are equal in the random forcing case.

Abstract:
In this paper, a new modal analysis method based on a novel multivariate data analysis technique called smooth orthogonal decomposition (SOD) is proposed. The development of the SOD and its main properties are described. The mathematical justification for the application in modal analysis is also provided. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and its application in modal analysis are provided for comparison. Numerical simulations of discrete and continuous systems are used in this comparison. It is demonstrated that the SOD-based analysis overcomes main deficiencies of the POD. The SOD identifies linear normal modes and corresponding frequencies without requiring any a priori information about the distribution of mass in the system.

Abstract:
