Full textStudy Park: Södermalm The right to education is one of our most valuable and should be seen as such regardless of a person’s age. However, the status of adult education in Sweden tends to be lower than that of other forms of education. Venues where the teaching takes place are often outdated and ill-fitted for their purpose. Study Park: Södermalm is a proposal for a new study building dedicated to adult education with the aim of becoming an important symbol for adult education and raising the status of the study form. Study Park: Södermalm is located in Fatbursparken in Södermalm, Stockholm, where it together with the building Oscar I:s Minne forms a new knowledge centre. Courses and seminars will be held both daytime and evenings in the Study Park's many lecture halls of varying sizes. An openness characterizes the building and the spacious communication areas also fill the function of self-study rooms for university and college students in the city. Placing oneself in a public area entails a major responsibility. With the ambition to give something back to the people already on the site, the lower floors are made public with access to an exhibition hall, theatre activities, a restaurant, study guidance, conference rooms, group rooms, computer rooms and a projection room. Parts of the building can be adapted to expo halls at major events. Open and available study rooms ensure that the building is continuously active and bring life and movement on the site.

Full textThe idea for this preschool started with an investigation of the location, with an inventory of its history and present. In the 16’Th century a summer estate called “Ekermanska malmgården” was established here, and the remaining attendants buildings are the next-door neighbor to the location for this project. This historical building is hidden on a remote blind alley, and is taken care of by a local history society on a low budget. Malmgården has a lush garden with old oak trees and behind this area we find the railway. In between the garden and the area set for the preschool we also find a small, old fashioned wooden dance floor, built in the seventies. One part of the assignment was to designate a complimentary use for the preschool-building. With the historical findings and consideration to the surrounding needs, the idea of dancing for joy, as a social activity, came into focus. This is not a dancing school, no classroom adapted for dance is needed because the whole outdoors is made into a dance floor, complete with a small stage, which also replaces the previous dance floor structure. The plan is to open up this space for various uses during evenings and holidays, social dancing, children’s plays, small concerts or other gatherings. It also provides an excellent playground for the children in the preschool, and gives opportunities for small shows and holiday celebrations. The desired feeling and atmosphere is for this complex to be like a public recreation space – to initiate connections, amusement and social dancing for all ages!
Persson, August. "Lärosektor Fatburen : – Komvuxskola på Södermalm." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-208398.
Full textA complex plot Making a proposal for a Komvux building located in Fatbursparken on Södermalm in Stockholm, is a challenge. This plot is located in the midst of were a multitude of scales and styles converge, a delicate and central urban context well known for it’s postmodern housing palace by Ricardo Bofill, but also infamous for its problems with drug dealing and its ambiguous green space in front of Bofill’s housing complex. The park is very well integrated in the urban fabric, but still somehow, perceived as a backyard and space to pass by, not to stay in. Technical aspects The technical premises for the project couldn’t be neglected now the tunnels of the just finished Citybanan and the mainline, passes right beneath the plot. The possible load bearing zones have dictated the premises for this project when it comes to placement, the amount of floors and choice of construction and materials. Sequences in the city I’ve wanted to mend the park by trying to fulfil the geometry and the sequence of rooms that is experienced when walking the passage between the metro station Medborgarplatsen and the commuter train station Södra Station. By doing this, creating a more clearly defined spatial experience when passing through the park. Oscar Is Minne The structure is also supposed to relate to a certain structure on the plot. Oscar Is Minne is a former Home for the widowed of the less well-to-do from the higher classes, built during the end of the 1900th century. The building is marked as class blue – notable building, which means it’s to be preserved in its original shape even though its use will change over time and can’t be altered with. In this project the use of the building is assumed to be administration for the Komvux. I want put on display the connection between this renowned building and my addition by letting them get as close as possible to each other. A framework structure is therefore used to reach for Oscar Is Minne’s southern wing entrance without placing load on top of the tunnels. The cantilever effect keeps it afloat above the surface. Learning environment and a space with identity When it comes to the learning environment, I’ve tried to create a building that allows for grown ups to come and study on a high-school level without making them feel like they’ve failed earlier in life. Trying to achieve this has raised questions about informal spaces for studying as well as space syntax. The building is divided into three floors were the first two floors are public or semi public, dominated by the life in between the red framework. The third floor consists of conventional class rooms that allows for conventional lectures and seminars led by teachers. The narrow corridors and the lack of space for just hanging out, forces students to move down on the second floor, where they meet to study, relax and have lunch or coffee. This duality creates a building that fills its purpose by providing contrasts in space and organisation of the program. The red framework floor becomes a signature space both within the city as well as a signature space within the school. The ambition is that the feeling of this being an unique space with a clearly defined character, trumps the notion of it being a space for adults to study high school courses.

Full textThe city of Stockholm is in a phase of expansion. A growing population does not only increase the need of a more responsible usage of land areal but also the need of a high functioning infrastructure. Due to this development a lot of large-scale projects including work in direct and in close contact to rock have been performed or are currently underway. This demands a great deal of knowledge on the certain rock-types involved in said projects and therefore thorough geological investigation takes places before any project can start. This study will focus on two of these areas where a lot of infrastructural activity in rocks have taken place during recent years. Examination area one is in Stocksund and contains data that was maintained in connection with the expansion of the power grid called project “City link”. Area two is located in Slussen, Södermalm where the information comes from the major reconstruction of the traffic juncture. Since several investigations and surveys have been conducted, old data from earlier projects has proven useful for this study. The study aims to investigate previous faults and their sense of movement in the area. In order to do so, drill cores from each site have been analyzed in order to find sense indicators that can provide information about the fault. Slickenside is a kinematic indicator that can be used for this. Each area had one drill core and in each of them five slickensides were identified and examined further.

Full textIn cities around the world, lanes and parking lots are being converted into areas for walking and recreation. The dominance of the car and road traffic is questioned and life on foot is allowed to take over. Walking has crucial role in the vibrant and sustainable city. To create space for pedestrians, however, a design is required that attracts visit and recreation through pleasant environments. When transforming traffic environments into pleasant living environments, the traffic network in the city needs to be adapted to a more car-free lifestyle and the challenges of traffic need to be solved in other ways. Each place has its own conditions, which affects the result. Götgatan on Södermalm in Stockholm is a main street and an important link between north and south. The street has a long history and has changed several times. Today's street has large flows of pedestrians, but at the same time the cars take up a large part in the street space. This report aims to investigate the extent to which the street can be made more pleasant for pedestrians by removing car traffic. Criteria for pleasant street spaces and car-free traffic planning have been studied and led to the realization that the surfaces need to be redesigned for the purpose. Site inventory of southern Götgatan and an interview with an official from the city of Stockholm provide a basis for assessing what is possible to do on the location. The analysis shows that a full-scale pedestrian street from Folkungagatan to Ringvägen is difficult to implement without negative effects distressing the rest of the district. The width and length of the street make it difficult to motivate a pedestrian street. The conclusion is that less extensive measures can add the values needed and that seasonal pedestrian streets can be an alternative that does not have too much negative effect on accessibility.

Full textStockholm is growing and that in turn requires new buildings. The free surfaces of Stockholm decreases and Stockholm City are trying to find new ways to improve the city. The property Gulbetan is located on Södermalm in connection with Ringvägen and Vitabergsparken. Today the site is used for parking and recycling which makes the place dismal and it does not fulfill its full potential. This thesis leads to the final draft documents for the property. Documents are produced along a thorough site analysis, which in turn results in a building with a shop on the corner of plane 0, sheltered housing on floors 1-2 and apartments on floors 3-7. Even a pedestrian area created between the parks Vitabergsparken and Lilla Blecktornsparken. The idea of the architecture throughout the project has been to create a new clearance of Ringvägen, with a stylish building that is timeless.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine if the introduction of neighborhood watch affects the number of burglary. The questions asked were; which types of methods of neighborhood watch were used, and what kind of differences there were between selected areas in Södermalm, Stockholm. We created a matched sample of areas and contacted mediators of neighborhood watch in these areas. We conducted a quantitative study using structured interviews and presented data per burglary rates in the areas five years before and one to five years after neighborhood watch was implemented. The results were analyzed by comparative analysis and concluded that common methods of neighborhood watch were e.g. signage, security doors, good contacts between neighbors and attention to suspects in the area. The differences between the methods used means that general conclusions about differences and similarities cannot be concluded. The impact of neighborhood watch differed, and the results were ambiguous.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to identify how the discourse about gentrification is produced in Swedish newspapers, where Södermalm in Stockholm is a typical example of a place that is considered to be gentrified. The study was conducted through critical discourse analysis, using Faircloughs guidelines and a theoretical framework consisting of sociological theories on urbanity and social stigmatization. The essay applies Georg Simmel’s and Pierre Bourdieu's theories on city life, habitus and cultural capital, Norbert Elias's view of established and outsiders and David Harvey's formulation of the right to the city. The analysis consists of ten newspaper articles published in the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Metro, Mitt i Södermalm, and Svenska Dagbladet. The results indicate that gentrification is seen as a class-related urbanization process which takes shape through sales of rental units, the creation of a new middle class and popular cultural trends. The results also indicate that there is no uniform understanding of whether gentrification is negative or positive. Nevertheless there is an understanding that the district's economic change has altered the site, which is met with mixed responses.

Eriksson, Anton. "Komvux- Fatbursparken." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-208350.
Full textPROJECT DESCRIPTION This project aims at creating a Komvux in Fatbursparken, located in Södermalm, Stockholm. Today, the location is difficult due to its complexity with both the city and the main road underground. Due to the fact that the surface of the site consists of construction for these lanes, this must be taken into account. I chose to make the construction an incentive for the nature of my building. By prolonging the existing walls of the main and city lane, these became the supporting elements of the building. These cut through the body of the building in the form of large massive discs aimed at Oscar 1's memory, which in turn is attached to a network of steel bellows so as to stabilize the building but also counteract movement. The building has a particularly flexible floor that allows it to meet future changes. Water, electricity, internet, sewage, ventilation, etc. are already integrated, which makes the mobility of various rooms advantageous. My origin idea for my Komvux were to create a learning environment that makes one want to stay and study on-site. Today, Komvux, in my eyes, is considered an institution you are unwillingly staying for longer than necessary. I wanted to change that, I wanted you to feel comfortable and create premises with a good study environment that makes you want to stay. A dilemma I find exists is that you, as an adult, are forced to be in a school environment like primary school. That's why I've based on the university environment, which I think can attract more students. The building has many large open spaces, which gives the student access to airy study places on several levels, but also enclosed ones if so are required. The entrance hall is completely public and is intended to serve as an extension of the park where thin glass boulders will act as thin barriers that make the transition as seamless, dynamic and transparent as possible. By making the entrance plan completely public, the city's residents can take part in the premises, as well as private individuals as well as companies will have the opportunity to subscribe to the premises during the weekends in order to utilize the building efficiently. As the building is centrally located, it feels important that it becomes multifaceted and flexible for all the inhabitants of the city. The building is characterized consistently by glass facade, this to really emphasize the importance of natural light in studies, which is preferable. Therefore, I have placed an atrium that cuts through all floors as well as glass roofs to spread light in the building both inside and outside. As glass has less insulation than a solid wall, the facades are covered with double-layered glass sections to create a climate scale. This isolates the building at least as well and works partly as a greenhouse. One of the basic ideas of the project was that the area I occupy the park should be reproduced. By rebuilding the roof to a place with greenery, café, seating, but also creating conditions for lectures for smaller groups, I could give back the land I acquired.

Full textAn increasing number of families with small children are now choosing to live in Stockholm’s inner city, which has led to a tremendous need for more pre-schools. The most common solution today is to use pavilions with temporary building permits where modules are assembled as required from time to time. As they provide such a flexible solution, these barracks are however often being used in a permanent manner, quite different from the interim solution they were once intended to be. Another problem that pre-schools face is that the children’s food is not cooked on location, but is instead prepared in industrial kitchens and delivered to the pre-schools. Although this is a viable solution, it does not fulfill the intended educational objective. The purpose of this project has been to design a pre-school in Stockholm’s inner city which provides a flexible option due to co-usage features. The pre-school’s kitchen also caters a restaurant which is open to the public. In the evenings, part of the children's space is used as a dance studio. This co-usage of space and function becomes the core and driving force of the project. The grounds of the pre-school are located in one corner of the park Tantolunden on Södermalm. One side of the grounds is adjacent to motor roads and railroad tracks and significant differences in level. Noise and traffic dangers are obvious. At the same time, the north side of the grounds shares an amazing park with the heritage listed Ekermanska malmgården which has existed at this site for centuries. Building in parks is controversial and the building has therefore been given the task of clarifying this site, which is currently difficult to use. By providing businesses open to the public along Ringvägen, it becomes a destination instead of merely a place of transit. By providing an extension of Ekermanska malmgården's direction, the boundaries of the park are also defined. The volume itself encloses a courtyard that becomes the children's safe haven.

Full textA common way of developing cities today is through building closed or half-open blocks. The advantage is that it gives way to a high density and active streets, since all the backs turns to the courtyard. Developers often mention the historic city center as a role model, and sometimes add its varied architecture as a quality that should be noticed. The question is wether or not there are other values in this century old typology and, if there are qualities as found in the millennial courtyard typology, where the space behind the front sides become a half private core, rather than an emptiness. The project is situated in an area which can be considered as the end of a city's historic center, as well as i the crossing of block variations from different eras. The proposal consists of three new residential blocks and one gallery, designed after the courtyard's utilization and the historical buildings on the site.

The children come in contact with the adults that work in the adjacent buildings: the bakery comes with bread and snacks (fika), the restaurant prepares the food for their lunch, the woodshop is shared with the ateliers, the exhibition space draws in both adults and children to its happenings and the office workers come and go through the central space. It is through this variation that the children are given the societal complexity that they deserve and thrive in. The visual composition of the village builds upon the same idea, that complexity is something that the children need to grow and deserve so that they can be glad. Through the use of the locations historical context, the village is created with a combination of abstract ornamentation to firstly interest the children and secondly to create several layers of ornamentation that lead to further thoughts and explorations of the space.

Full textImagine, a place, a palace, made for knowledge. A building made for learning, understanding and insight. A Palace of Knowledge! The Palace of Knowledge is a building for adult education, for grown-ups taking up courses from ordinary school. It is at the same time a building for conferences, trade fairs, events, meetings, lectures and other means of the growth of knowledge. As an outset for the project I took inspiration from Rafael’s School of Athens, where knowledge is to be felt in the air. The Palace of Knowledge is an attempt to, in present time, make it a reality. The building lets the park outside in while at the same time giving it room. It is inspired by a combination of antique architecture and postmodernism. In order to link to the antique, I have had in mind Vitruvius’ elements of architecture: firmitas (strength) utilitas (utility) venustas (beauty), that together form a unified whole. Among the variety of architectural styles, it is the antique, with its classical columns, that perhaps is most readily associated with dignity and pride—something that adult education deserves more of. Through a playfulness with architectural traditions and a thoughtful relationship with its context, a building is formed that makes a bold mark while simultaneously giving room, and the combination of the antique and classical with the postmodern and original is thereby given. The constant flow of people along the central path through the park between the two nodes Medborgarplatsen in the east and Södra Station in the west is now greeted by the Palace of Knowledge and its front with what I have termed “inverted pillars”. The building is clean, as if cast in one piece, without protruding parts. A building that triggers thinking. Adult education is now standing with pride and dignity in the heart of Södermalm. If only one could step inside the Palace of Knowledge ...
