Abstract:
This article aims at understanding to understand the distinctive mechanisms of digital media use, seen in relation to cultural practices at large. The empirical material is a survey study of university students at the Business Administration, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science and Philosophy departments at Södertörn University, Sweden. The empirical analysis deals with the students’ digital media use and preferences, and how these are related to their broader cultural practices and preferences. Specific attention is paid to the webpages the students mention in the survey, and how these are distributed among the groups. By showing detailed information on these areas, the mechanisms of difference of digital media use are revealed.

Abstract:
Greenstone axes produced during the Late Mesolithic in east central Sweden are notoriously dissimilar. Each axe appears to have been given its own special charac- teristics. These axes were not made into a certain shape by following a technological template. In this article, the authors present the interpretation that people believed the form of an axe was already present in the stone se- lected for work. Making axes was about releasing es- sential forms from stones. The essence of stone effec- tively determined the appearance the axe was destined to have. This is the reason that axes in the region have such variable appearances.

Abstract:
This article derives from the research project entitled “Art, Culture and Conflict: Transformations of Museums and Memory Culture around the Baltic Sea after 1989,” which was financed by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies, Södertörn University. It discusses how history museums in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have reacted to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the conclusion of the Soviet occupation of the three Baltic states. It argues that the Cold War is understood by the museums as a special historical epoch not comparable to any other historical period in these six countries. It concludes that to be able to deal with this particular point in history we either need to metaphorically put the Cold War in between red brackets, as it were, which makes it possible to address the Cold War when needed, or to place it outside the historical narrative of the modern rise of the five discussed nation-states.

Pfändtner, Willy. "A postcolonial philosophy of religion and interreligious polylogue." Approaching Religion 1, no. 1 (May 2, 2011): 33–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.30664/ar.67468.

Abstract:
In this article, an agenda for the development of a philosophy of religion which is informed by the challenges and possibilities of religious plurality is suggested. It is argued that the philosophy of religion as an academic discipline is in need of a kind of reconstruction if it is to maintain its relevance and connection to actual religious phenomena as they present themselves globally. The problem originates in the fact that the modern concept of religions has a distorting effect when applied to non-western traditions. The article focuses on a way to understand religious diversity by using aspects of Heidegger’s fundamental ontology to illuminate different ways of being religious within the same tradition and also to find similar religious dispositions across traditions. It is argued that this can inform interreligious dialogue so that this dialogue—or rather, polylogue—itself can serve as a tool to develop a postcolonial existential philosophy of religion. Part of this project would be to find and apply concepts and categories by reading religious traditions and subtraditions through each other. The article ends with a few suggestions on how this can be done, in this case by drawing on traditions from India.Willy Pfändtner is Senior Lecturer, Study of Religions, Södertörn University, Sweden. Abstract:
The former island of Södertörn, just south of Stock- holm, was intensively settled during the Early Neo- lithic. For more than twenty years a field at Stensborg, Grödinge parish, was surveyed for surface finds. Most numerous among the various artefact categories were axes, with stone axes of different shapes showing that they had been intentionally fragmented. Fragments of pointed-butted and thin-butted flint axes were also found, all of them changed by intensive heat. Just as the flint axes indicate contact with southern Scandi- navia, slate objects demonstrate the existence of net- works extending to northern Sweden. During the Early Neolithic the site was a slope situ- ated in the innermost part of a bay, delimited by the shoreline on one side and a ridge on the opposite side. Two small but pronounced ravines of streams also form part of the natural boundary of the site. During excavation of the field several small pits were found that were filled with fragments of axes, pottery and other objects, along with a considerable amount of carbonized seed. Most of the finds have in- dications of destruction, either directly or by the use of fire. The field seems to have been used as a place for assemblies, where rituals were an important part of the activities. The Stensborg site seems to represent yet another kind of natural enclosure involving ritual activities during the Early Neolithic. This presenta- tion is part of a project in progress.

In this essay you will be reading and learing about the early Mesolithic from 8000 BC-6000 BC in the archipelago area of Södertörn, east central Sweden. The focus is on the Mesolithic pioneers and how they managed to adapt to their surroundings. To be able to investigate the area I have used a qualitative method which above all includes usage of literature.   The purpose of the essay is to get a better understanding of how people used to live during the Mesolithic and also try to understand how and why they did things. For example why they moved from the mainland to the peninsula in the first place.

Abstract:
The following paper is a master thesis written at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. This master thesis is done in a collaboration with a Swedish Consulting Company SWECO. The main focus of this master thesis is to investigate if an implementation of Electric Road System (ERS) on Södertörn Crosslink is profitable, and if so, approximate the payback period for the investment. Additionally, the costs associated with the electrification of the bus fleet, currently operating on road 259, will be determined. There are three different ERS technologies, inductive (wireless), conductive overhead, and conductive rail have been compared, looking at advantages and disadvantages, with regard to the implementation of ERS on Södertörn Crosslink. To accompany this, case study methods have been used, where the results are based on interviews, theory and calculations. The result shows that the payback period for both inductive and conductive rail, based on this study’s forecast, is 7 years and 9,3 years respectively with regard to a discount factor of 9,0 percent. However, the conductive overhead solution does not seem to be profitable as this technology is limited to heavy trucks and buses capable of connecting to the overhead wires. The inductive ERS solution seems to be the best suitable option for Södertörn Crosslink, viewed from an economical and technological perspective. while also considering other factors such as aesthetics.

Abstract:
Södertörn University was built in the suburb of Stockholm to bring hope for students that aren’t used to study. Ever since the university was built there has been a debate on internet message boards such as Flashback and a discourse has developed in the recent five years. The public discourse has had a negative influence on how the university is perceived by the public. The purpose of this study is to analyze how this discourse has developed the image of the university and how it has evolved. The empirical material consists of messages from the Flashback message board and two electronic articles from Svenska Dagbladet, "Ge Södertörns högskola en ärlig chans att växa" and "Högskolefusk ökar- Södertörns storsatsar". In this study I have processed the material from a thematic analysis and a discourse point of view in a textual interpretation of the board messages and the SvD articles. The result shows that the university's status is presented as low due to negative attitudes among the message board writers. The articles – in contrast - show a positive image of the university and have a less critical position. The criticism is not aimed at Södertörn University as an institution, but the students who attend the university.

The aim of this essay is to describe the historical development of the intercultural teacher training program at Södertörn University in Stockholm. I have also examined how the intercultural teacher training program was started, how and why it became intercultural and how the people in charge of the development of the teacher training program discussed intercultural science. The teacher training program has been an active part of Södertörn University since 1998, but it became intercultural in 2002. I have studied these questions through documents from the Södertörn University archives and literature by the funders of the education. The study shows that the university profile, ambitions and motives have been a key factor in the decision to make the teacher training program at Södertörn a multi-cultural one.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to identify areas within Stockholm’s southernmost municipalities (Södertörn) where it was possible to establish terminals where soil and rock material used within the construction industry could be stored and sorted. This should contribute to the planning of a coordinated material management in the region. The need for and usefulness of these hubs have begun to be recognized, but no studies about suitable sites based on Swedish conditions has previously been carried out. In order to find the criteria that define a favourable area for such a site ten stakeholders with connection to the material management were interviewed. The criteria were then translated into geographic information and implemented in the GIS software ArcMap, where a map visualizing the areas that were suitable respectively unsuitable for the purpose was constructed. Thereafter an example which showed how the map could be used to make an initial selection of potential sites within a specified distance from selected construction sites was carried out. In order to further contribute to a coordinated material management the region's current sites for soil and rock handling were identified, also presented in a geographical image constructed in ArcMap. Overall the interviewed stakeholders agreed about which criteria a soil and rock handling site should meet. The most important ones seemed to be the following; a good logistical location which minimizes transportation distances, possibility to shield it from residents and others staying in the area, little competition from other interests, a location outside environmentally sensitive areas, and finally, an area that is (sufficiently) large. The result showed that there existed large accessible areas that could potentially be used for the establishment of new handling sites within Södertörn, which contradict the opinion that the lack of space is one of the major reasons to that these kind of establishments can’t be established. All criteria were not represented in the map though, this since some were not possible to translate into geographic information. Moreover, clear boundaries between when an area could be used and not were sometimes lacking, it seemed to depend on site-specific characteristics. How the criteria were represented in the map was therefore partly based on assumptions and subjective judgments. Assumptions and estimates were however based on interviews with knowledgeable stakeholders and relevant literature and were therefore considered to be reasonable. The map was considered to be able to give an indication of where were soil and rock handling sites potentially could be established. The map could be used to make an initial selection of potential sites, which then can be further analysed before a final choice. The report can be used to gain a broader understanding of these kind of establishments, the criteria and requirements they must meet, and what involved stakeholders think about these.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about the preschool pedagogue’s perspective, values and way of thinking in terms of interculturality. Furthermore, to then compare this knowledge in relation to Södertörn University intercultural profile. Above this, we want to differentiate what can happen between the two. The more isolated purpose of the aforementioned study is not to find right nor wrong, but to gain knowledge about the experienced reality of the pedagogue and as to how this mirrors preschool operations. The question formulation of the study is: which perspective and ways of thinking are conveyed in Södertörn University intercultural profile? Which perspective and ways of thinking in terms of interculturality can be found in pedagogues that are active within the preschools we have visited? What can occur in the engagement between the two? The study is qualitative, and the method constitutes of interviews and observations. Eight pedagogues have participated in the study, whereof two participated in a pilot study. The theoretical viewpoints of the study is selected theories and aspects regarding phenomenology. These have been used to find explanations for the experienced reality of the pedagogues in terms of interculturality. The pivotal conclusion in our study is that Södertörn University definition of interculturality deviates from both contemporary research, as well as what appears in testimony from the pedagogues, which in turn is part of their daily world. This deviation consists of that Södertörn University has a widened definition of interculturality where more cultural aspects are included. A consecution of this conclusion is that the pedagogues who meet in the workplace can have different perceptions regarding intercultural work.

Abstract:

In Sweden according to the planning and building Act municipalities have planning monopoly. The question about shopping centres in the outskirts of cities is a regional issue, because they attract customers from a large area. Municipalities often find it hard to assert themselves against large commercial companies when it comes to their establishing new retail outlets on the outskirts of cities. Without a regional co-operation there is a risk that municipalities can be played up against one another, so that more and more companies are given permits without the municipalities having taken the strategic consideration necessary for a long term sustainable development. The focus in this work is on four municipalities in the Södertörn region (Södertälje, Botkyrka, Huddinge and Nynäshamn). Today there are some out-of-town retail outlets in the first three municipalities. The main aim of this thesis is to explain why there is no co-operation between municipalities in Södertörn concerning out-of-town retailing. The aim is also to connect sustainable city development with the problems of out-of-town retails as well as the municipalities commercial policy. The study uses a hermeneutic approach and a qualitative method with one case-study. The interviews are partly based on standard procedures.

Out-of-town retail outlets entail private car use and this is a problem from a city development perspective. To reach a sustainable city development it is important to expand transport options such as walking, biking and public transport. The project Sustainable Travel (Hållbart resande) at Södertörn supports this development. Some of the municipalities in Södertörn are trying to revitalise their local centres and this is positive from a social and ecological perspective. The four municipalities however do not co-operate concerning out-of-town retailing, and this reverts the issue back to a lack of regional planning, and their competing for purchasing power.
