Abstract:
This article aims at understanding to understand the distinctive mechanisms of digital media use, seen in relation to cultural practices at large. The empirical material is a survey study of university students at the Business Administration, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science and Philosophy departments at Södertörn University, Sweden. The empirical analysis deals with the students’ digital media use and preferences, and how these are related to their broader cultural practices and preferences. Specific attention is paid to the webpages the students mention in the survey, and how these are distributed among the groups. By showing detailed information on these areas, the mechanisms of difference of digital media use are revealed.

Abstract:
Greenstone axes produced during the Late Mesolithic in east central Sweden are notoriously dissimilar. Each axe appears to have been given its own special charac- teristics. These axes were not made into a certain shape by following a technological template. In this article, the authors present the interpretation that people believed the form of an axe was already present in the stone se- lected for work. Making axes was about releasing es- sential forms from stones. The essence of stone effec- tively determined the appearance the axe was destined to have. This is the reason that axes in the region have such variable appearances.

Abstract:
This article derives from the research project entitled “Art, Culture and Conflict: Transformations of Museums and Memory Culture around the Baltic Sea after 1989,” which was financed by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies, Södertörn University. It discusses how history museums in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have reacted to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the conclusion of the Soviet occupation of the three Baltic states. It argues that the Cold War is understood by the museums as a special historical epoch not comparable to any other historical period in these six countries. It concludes that to be able to deal with this particular point in history we either need to metaphorically put the Cold War in between red brackets, as it were, which makes it possible to address the Cold War when needed, or to place it outside the historical narrative of the modern rise of the five discussed nation-states.

Abstract:
In this article, an agenda for the development of a philosophy of religion which is informed by the challenges and possibilities of religious plurality is suggested. It is argued that the philosophy of religion as an academic discipline is in need of a kind of reconstruction if it is to maintain its relevance and connection to actual religious phenomena as they present themselves globally. The problem originates in the fact that the modern concept of religions has a distorting effect when applied to non-western traditions. The article focuses on a way to understand religious diversity by using aspects of Heidegger’s fundamental ontology to illuminate different ways of being religious within the same tradition and also to find similar religious dispositions across traditions. It is argued that this can inform interreligious dialogue so that this dialogue—or rather, polylogue—itself can serve as a tool to develop a postcolonial existential philosophy of religion. Part of this project would be to find and apply concepts and categories by reading religious traditions and subtraditions through each other. Abstract:
The former island of Södertörn, just south of Stock- holm, was intensively settled during the Early Neo- lithic. For more than twenty years a field at Stensborg, Grödinge parish, was surveyed for surface finds. Most numerous among the various artefact categories were axes, with stone axes of different shapes showing that they had been intentionally fragmented. Fragments of pointed-butted and thin-butted flint axes were also found, all of them changed by intensive heat. Just as the flint axes indicate contact with southern Scandi- navia, slate objects demonstrate the existence of net- works extending to northern Sweden. During the Early Neolithic the site was a slope situ- ated in the innermost part of a bay, delimited by the shoreline on one side and a ridge on the opposite side. Two small but pronounced ravines of streams also form part of the natural boundary of the site. During excavation of the field several small pits were found that were filled with fragments of axes, pottery and other objects, along with a considerable amount of carbonized seed. Most of the finds have in- dications of destruction, either directly or by the use of fire. The field seems to have been used as a place for assemblies, where rituals were an important part of the activities. The Stensborg site seems to represent yet another kind of natural enclosure involving ritual activities during the Early Neolithic. This presenta- tion is part of a project in progress.

Background and objectives: The academization of the nursing education has emphasized the need for students to acquire academic literacies both for educational and clinical reasons. However, for long being a practical profession, nurse students do not always reflect on the importance of being academic literate. This aim of this article was to describe the teaching of introductory academic writing to first-term students in the Swedish Red Cross University College’s nursing programme, implemented as a transprofessional collaboration project involving the Swedish Red Cross University College and the library as well as the student support unit at Södertörn University.Methods: A model was used for implementing teaching of academic literacies to first-term nursing students embedded in a discipline-specific course. The model consisted of two seminars, one introductory seminar focusing on academic writing and how to search for, read, appraise, and use research articles and one feedback seminar. Peer feedback was performed by the students. In between the seminars, the students began to work on their course assignment and later finalized the assignment using the feedback provided by teachers and peers.Results: The transprofessional collaboration in teaching academic literacies was described as successful. Teachers and students found the embedding of academic writing in a subject-specific course as useful, although – from a student perspective – demanding and partly difficult. The provision of feedback was regarded as helpful and encouraged the students to finish their assignments. Although being a team of teachers, the large class sizes resulted in an extensive workload and stressful situations. Yet another challenge, important for the sustainability of the model, was to win support for teaching academic literacies among all teachers in the nursing programme.Conclusions: The transprofessional collaboration when teaching academic literacies to first-term nursing students have indicated advantages and challenges, of which both are of importance to consider carefully in the further planning and implementation of the project.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight the long-term preservation challenges that the Swedish private archives are faced with. In as much as they offer a complement to the public archives and hence offer a nuanced national narrative, they lack both financial and human resources to effectively deal with the digital information management environment. Design/methodology/approach Participatory Action Research (PAR) was used to identify the challenges of long-term preservation together with the six private archives institutions that were involved in the collaboration. The collaboration was financially facilitated by the Södertörn University. PAR is defined as a systematic investigation, with the collaboration of those affected by the issue being studied, for the purposes of education and taking action or effecting social change. What is distinctive of PAR is the active involvement of people whose lives are affected by the phenomenon under study. Findings The private archival institutions face long-term preservation challenges such as lack of a digital repository that would facilitate the capture, organization and management of digital records that are of different formats and in a dispersed environment. There are no stringent legal requirements to facilitate the creation and management of the records in a standardized way and the institutions fear that imposing such requirements might deter their clients from depositing archival materials with them. The institutions will also need to espouse the business-oriented archival descriptions where private organizations are concerned to identify relevant archival materials and to promote participatory archival descriptions that would allow the creators to tag their records with metadata. Digital information requires a proactive approach, that is, planning for the long-term preservation of the information before it is created. Private archives need to invest in education packages that will facilitate their clientele’s understanding of the challenges of digital long-term preservation. Research limitations/implications The findings cannot be generalized to all private archival institutions, as it was only six institutions that participated, but the issues discussed are relevant to most archival institutions. Practical implications A lot of research has been carried out in the area of long-term preservation, but researchers have not paid enough attention to the woes of the private archives. To sustain a nuanced national narrative, the private archives need all the support to be able to live up to their mission of preserving archives of the private sector that are not captured by the public archival institutions. This is important in a pluralistic society such as Sweden. Highlighting the challenges might enable the institutions to work towards finding common challenges. Social implications The private archives are part of Sweden’s national heritage. Their preservation matters to the society as a whole and to enhancing the voices of the underrepresented. Originality/value The literature review revealed that not much research has paid attention to the challenges being faced by the private archives. This paper, therefore, contributes to this knowledge gap.

Den här texten beskriver och reflekterar över praktiska och pedagogiska erfarenheter från Södertörns högskola i arbetet med att etablera en lärosätesgemensam utmaningsbaserad kurs tillsammans med Karolinska Institutet och med samverkansparterna Huddinge och Botkyrka kommuner.

Landets lärarutbildningar har problem med att förbereda framtidens lärare för den alltmer digitaliserade skolan. Digital kompetens är redan en integrerad del i skolornas verksamhet men lärarstudenter, skolor, lärarfack, politiker, teknikföretag och andra pekar på att landets lärarutbildningar släpar efter. Vår uppkopplade samtid behöver också satsningar på medie- och informationskunnighet (MIK). I den här artikeln beskriver och reflekterar tre lärarutbildare från Södertörns högskola över sitt arbete med MIK som inom ramen för en pågående satsning i lärarutbildningen används som samlingsterm för tre förmågor som både lärarstudenter och lärarutbildare bör nå: digital kompetens, mediekunnighet och informationskunnighet. Målsättningen med att implementera dessa tre förmågor och begrepp på lärarutbildningen har varit att kombinera konkret tillämpning och kritisk reflektion för att på så sätt skapa förutsättningar för att utbilda medie- och teknikmedvetna lärare för den digitaliserade skolan och det medialiserade samhället. I artikeln diskuteras organisatoriska och praktiska utmaningar med ett sådant utvecklingsarbete samt vikten av samverkan, erfarenhetsutbyte och kontinuitet. En slutsats är att det är viktigt att tänka på digitala medier inte bara i termer av verktyg utan också som miljöer inom vilka lärarutbildningen ska utbilda digitalt kompetenta lärare för framtiden och samtidigt behålla sin autonomi visavi starka externa ekonomiska, politiska och pedagogiska krafter.

Vertybių kaitos problema nėra pakankamai ištirta, ypač Baltijos šalyse ir apskritai pokomunistinėse šalyse. Ši problema tampa dar aktualesnė eurointegracinių procesų bei jų įtakos visuomenės vertybinėms orientacijoms kontekste. Todėl šio straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti vertybines orientacijas bei jų kaitą trijose Baltijos šalyse (Lietuvoje, Latvijoje, Estijoje) įvertinant tai nulėmusius politinius, ekonominius, socialinius, kultūrinius aspektus. Tiriant vertybių kaitą remtasi Schwartzo ir Bilsky (1987, 1990) metodologija, Ingleharto (1990,1995, 1997, 2000), De Graaf ir Evans (1996) teorinėmis nuostatomis. Empirinė tyrimo dalis analizuoja apklausos “Baltic Barometer – 2001” duomenis. Ši apklausa – tarptautinio projekto “Demokratizacija ir socialinė kaita Baltijos šalių regione”, koordinuojamo Södertörns universiteto Švedijoje, dalis. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidė, kad pagrindinės kultūrinės normos ir vertybinės orientacijos per pastaruosius dešimtį metų kito nežymiai. Kultūrinis kaitos procesas yra ilgas ir ypač sunkus vyresnės kartos žmonėms, kurių vertybinė sistema formavosi esant kitai socialinei-ekonominei aplinkai. Todėl kultūriniai pokyčiai atsilieka nuo ekonominių bei politinių ir vyksta keičiantis kartoms. Kuo didesni ilgalaikiai ekonominiai pokyčiai šalyje, tuo labiau skiriasi vertybinės kartų orientacijos. Vertybių transformacija, vykstanti europinės integracijos kontekste, neišvengiamai siejasi su individualizmo/kolektyvizmo bei modernizmo/tradiciškumo santykio kaita. Ekonominė bei technologinė pažanga, nepaisydama tautinių ribų, skatina visapusišką integracinį procesą, todėl iškyla tautinės ir globalinės kultūros santykio problema, kuri siejasi su tradiciškumo ir modernizmo samplaika šiuolaikinėje kultūroje. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad amžius yra labai svarbus kintamasis vertybių kaitos analizėje. Lietuvoje, Latvijoje ir Estijoje galima stebėti šias vertybių kaitos tendencijas: vertybinių orientacijų skirtumai tiesiogiai priklauso nuo respondentų amžiaus ir laikotarpio, kurio metu formavosi vertybinės nuostatos. Vyresnioji karta labiau vertina tradicines vertybes, o jaunimas imlus naujovėms ir greičiau perima, internalizuoja naujas vertybes. Jaunimo pažiūros žymiai liberalesnės. Sovietinis laikotarpis paliko ženklų pėdsaką tuo laikotarpiu brendusių žmonių sąmonėje. Tolerancijos socialinėms mažumoms stoka – uždaros visuomenės palikimas. Europinė integracija ir demokratizacija keičia vertybines nuostatas. Jaunimas labiau pasitiki naujomis demokratinėmis institucijomis, yra liberalesnių pažiūrų, pasižymi didesne tolerancija socialinių mažumų atžvilgiu.

Abstract:
Det här numret ägnar vi i huvudsak åt sociologisk forskning om covid-19-pandemins samhälleliga konsekvenser. Redan kort efter pandemins utbrott, i april 2020, publicerade tidskriften ett samtal mellan fyra svenska sociologer om covid-19-pandemin och vårt samhälles hantering av den. Vi bjöd kort därefter in Shai Mulinari, Linda Soneryd och Susanna Öhman att vara gästredaktörer till ett kommande temanummer med färsk empirisk forskning om hur samhället och människors liv har påverkats av coronakrisen och covid-19-pandemin. Resultatet blev detta dubbelnummer, som på olika sätt ger viktiga inblickar i hur pandemin har påverkat samhället i stort och olika utsatta gruppers livsvillkor. I de olika artiklarna får vi bland annat veta mer om vad svenskarna varit mest oroliga för under pandemin, hur arbetssituationen för personal inom vård och omsorg påverkades av den nya virussjukdomen, hur människor har förhållit sig till ”den svenska strategin” i sin vardag och hur dem vars anhöriga har avlidit under pandemin har hanterat de restriktioner som omöjliggjorde ett sista farväl vid dödsbädden. De enskilda artiklarna presenteras mer utförligt i den härpå följande introduktionen av gästredaktörerna, som vi även vill tacka för deras gedigna arbete med numret. I detta nummer presenterar vi också en ny satsning i form av så kallade research notes eller forskningsnotiser. Den tidigare Lundaredaktionen för tidskriften gav 2017 ut ett helt nummer med sådana forskningsnotiser, under temat ”Look at what’s happening in Sweden”. Den nuvarande redaktionen vid Södertörns högskola vill nu göra detta till ett stående inslag i Sociologisk Forskning. Forskningsnotiserna är tänkta att presentera nya forskningsresultat i kortare textformat än sedvanliga artiklar. Notiserna ska utgå från egen empirisk forskning om samhällsförhållanden i Sverige, men även komparativa studier som berör svenska förhållanden kan publiceras. Ni hittar en introducerande text som beskriver hur forskningsnotiserna ska utformas längre fram i detta nummer. I numret finns även recensioner av fem nyutkomma böcker. Två recensioner anknyter till numrets övergripande tema om covid-19-pandemin. I sin recension av Peter Baldwins Fighting the first wave. Why the Coronavirus was tackled so differently across the globe (2021) noterar Anne Kaun att Sverige ges en central roll i boken, och att Baldwin skriver fram sin egen position genom att argumentera för att Sverige tog fel väg i pandemin. Tobias Olofsson recenserar Johan Hirschfeldts och Olof Peterssons Rättsregler i kris (2020), en bok som också diskuterar Sveriges krishantering under coronaviruspandemin. Olofsson menar att författarna gör en ambitiös genomlysning av svensk krislagstiftning och att deras text inte bara är ”hantverksmässigt intressant utan den är också sociologiskt spännande då de antaganden framställningen bygger på och de slutsatser som presenteras resonerar med centrala sociologiska teman”. Övriga recensioner i numret behandlar böcker med helt andra teman. Hannah Bradby framhåller att Marie Sépulchres Disability and citizenship studies (2021) är tydlig och välstrukturerad i sitt sätt att undersöka funktionalitet, aktivism och medborgarskap samt sätter dessa teman i relation till frågor som ojämlikhet och social rättvisa. Stina Fernqvist närmar sig Sara Eldéns Forskningsetik. Vägval i samhällsvetenskapliga studier (2020) utifrån tankar kring de konkreta situationer vi som samhällsvetenskapliga forskare återkommande ställs inför: ”situationer som kräver självreflektion och som pockar på vår uppmärksamhet med frågor om vad forskningsetik egentligen är i praktiken”. Fernqvist uppmärksammar Eldéns påpekande att en bra forskare kanske alltid måste utstå ”en aning ångest” eftersom den samhällsvetenskapliga forskning som inbegriper människor alltid är en komplicerade process. Slutligen tar sig David Scott an Ian Buchanans Assemblage theory and method (2020) genom att diskutera begreppet assemblage – som översatts till ”sammansättning” – ett begrepp som fått genomslag inom samhällsvetenskaperna under det senaste decenniet. Scott menar att Buchanans bok saknar resonemang om hur ”teoretiska begrepp omsätts i metodologisk praktik”, vilket han finner märkligt då boken ”har ordet method i titeln”. Vi vill även uppmana er att sända oss era artikelmanus, forskningsnotiser, förslag på recensioner och idéer för framtida temanummer. Abstract:
Det här numret av Sociologisk Forskning är det första som helt görs av redaktionen på Södertörns högskola. Numret ges ut i en tid som tydligt präglas av den globala coronaviruspandemin. Redan i förra numret publicerade vi ett samtal mellan fyra svenska sociologer om pandemin och vårt samhälles hantering av den. I detta nummer efterlyser vi mer sociologisk forskning om hur samhället och människors liv har påverkats av coronakrisen och covid-19, genom en öppen anmodan (Call for papers) att skicka in artikelmanuskript med coronapandemirelaterad empirisk forskning till ett kommande temanummer av Sociologisk Forskning. Den tid i vilket detta nummer publiceras präglas också av de globala protester som inleddes efter det att en vit amerikansk polis dödade den 46-årige svarta mannen George Floyd. För dessa protester har den sociala rörelsen Black Lives Matter haft en avgörande betydelse. I det här numret publicerar vi en intervju med den amerikanska sociologen Jeffrey C. Alexander, en av de planerade huvudtalarna vid årets inställda Sociologidagarna. Intervjun kretsar främst kring Alexanders teori om den civila sfären, men behandlar även covid-19-pandemin, George Floyd och Black Lives Matter. I intervjun får Alexander frågan av Andrea Voyer, som tillsammans med Anna Lund har gjort intervjun, hur kultursociologin kan hjälpa oss att förstå den globala pandemin och den globala sociala rörelse som uppmärksammar svarta livs betydelse. Alexander svarar att en allmän sociologisk förståelse av covid-19-pandemin skulle kunna uppmärksamma betydelsen av klass, bristfälliga sjukvårdssystem eller politiska maktstrukturer. Men som kultursociolog vill Alexander även rikta blicken mot ”känslostrukturerna och representationens strukturer”, det vill säga frågor om vilket slags samhälle som vi känner att vi är. Han talar om covid-19-pandemin som ett trauma. Mordet på George Floyd beskriver Alexander som ”ett trauma inuti ett trauma”. Den solidaritetsrörelse som växt fram ser han dock som en möjlig brytpunkt för rasrelationerna i USA. I det här numret presenterar vi fyra forskningsartiklar. Rolf Lidskog skriver i sin artikel ”Samhället utmanat? Artificiell intelligens och sociologisk kunskap” att en allt viktigare sociologisk uppgift är att studera AI (artificiell intelligens), om vi ska kunna förstå samhällets utformning och det sociala livet av i dag. Lidskog visar hur sociologiska perspektiv både kan vidareutveckla kunskapen om AI och utmana dominerande föreställningar om detta fenomen. I artikeln ”Resisting the rat race. Self-sufficiency as a search for resonance in rural Sweden” analyserar Majken Jul Sørensen läsarbrev till tidningen Åter, skrivna av familjer som flyttat till den svenska landsbygden för att leva mer självförsörjande. Sørensen uppmärksammar frågor om modernitet, konstruktivt motstånd och vad livet i ett samhälle utan ekonomisk tillväxt skulle kunna innebära. Sofia Strid studerar i sin artikel ”Betydelser av könsstympning hos migrerade minoriteter i Sverige. En feministisk våldsforskningsanalys” attityder, förhållningsätt och förändringsfaktorer i förhållande till könsstympning, ett fenomen som hon ser som ett uttryck för samhälleligt och könat våld. Strid argumenterar för att det finns allt för lite kunskap om attityder till könsstympning i Sverige och att feministiska perspektiv kan tillföra nya värdefulla perspektiv i denna fråga. Sverre Wide menar i sin artikel ”Schack och social interaktion. En undersökning av Dag Østerbergs och Johan Asplunds analyser av schack” att sociologin allt för lite uppmärksammat spelandet av schack. Wides bidrag är att teoretiskt närma sig den struktur som utmärker schackspelandets sociala interaktion, vilket han gör genom att undersöka Østerbergs och Asplunds tidigare schackanalyser. I numret publicerar vi också fyra recensioner av nyutkomna böcker. Stefan Svallfors undrar i sin recension av Irene Wennemos Politik på riktigt. Handbok för sociala ingenjörer (2020) huruvida det vore ”en absurd överdrift att utnämna Irene Wennemo till en svensk nutida Machiavelli”. I sin recension av Miguel Martinez Squatters in the capitalist city. Housing, justice, and urban politics (2019) drar sig Anders Westerström till minnes ett möte med en äldre husockupant i Frankrike, och hur denne uppmärksammade en rad motsättningar som husockupanter ställs inför under postfordistiska och nyliberala samhällsförhållanden. Frågan om hur klass och rasism hänger samman analyseras av Mikael Svensson i avhandlingen Hur klass gör skillnad. Klasspositionens betydelse för rasistiska och negativt särskiljande praktiker (2019) och recensenten Susanne Urban menar att den, som alla bra frågor, inte är lätt att svara på. Aida Alvinius beskriver i sin recension av antologin Genus, risk och kris (2020) av Jennifer Hobbins, Erna Danielsson och Angelika Sjöstedt (red.) boken som ”ett ambitiöst försök till ett tvärvetenskapligt samarbete”. Vi vill också uppmana er att sända oss era artikelmanus, förslag till recensioner och idéer för framtida temanummer. Sociologisk Forskning publicerar bidrag på svenska och övriga skandinaviska språk samt på engelska.
