Abstract:
This article examines the global distribution of wealth within the capitalist world-economy over the longue durée. In stark contrast to the convergence of wealth predicted by modernization theory, the relatively stable bimodal (core-periphery) structure predicted by dependency theory, and the relatively stable trimodal (core-semiperiphery-periphery) structure, this article finds that the structure of the distribution of wealth in the world economy has transformed with each successive world hegemonic cycle. By adopting a longue durée perspective and a new statistical approach, I develop Arrighi and Drangel's (1986) method of conceptualizing, operationalizing, and measuring the global distribution of wealth within the capitalist world-economy. Through an examination of the period from 1500 to 2008, this article shows that the global distribution of wealth within the capitalist world-economy has transformed from a unimodal distribution during the period of Dutch hegemony to a bimodal distribution during the period of British hegemony, then to a trimodal distribution during the period of US hegemony, and now to a quadrimodal distribution in the early twenty-first century. While the global wealth hierarchy remained stable during periods of world hegemonies, it was transformed during periods of systemic crisis and hegemonic transition, thereby creating new forms of hierarchies.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to bring to the foreground some metaphysical commitments present in the debate about the relation between photography and the past. I will try to answer the question: what does a presentist see when she looks at photographs of dead relatives? According to presentism, if a particular object does not exist in the present, it does not exist simpliciter. For this reason, in Priorian presentism, there can be no de re (singular) propositions about past particulars. Part of the requirement for singularity would be played by reality, which suffers metaphysical restrictions from the passage of time. After outlining the metaphysical and semantical debate about presentism, I will briefly explore some theories of photography and separate them in two groups: de re theories that accept that through photography we indirectly perceive the past object itself and de dicto theories that deny it. Then, I will connect those theories to the problem faced by presentism, showing that a presentist must limit herself, in the case of objects that no longer presently exist, to a de dicto approach of photography. In other words, a presentist cannot accept that through photography she can indirectly see the past object itself. There would be nothing in the past for her to be remotely acquainted with or to demonstratively single out. I attempt to develop a presentist theory that could account for the descriptive and causal referential elements of photography using John Zeimbekis’ theory coupled with Craig Bourne’s presentist causal theory of reference (that jettison the Millian element of the causal theory). I will show how this theory is different from Kendall Walton’s counterfactual theory (also accepted by Dominic Lopes) and explore a criticism that could be formulated from his perspective.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 2070 BACKGROUND: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) often complain of long wait times in the emergency department (ED) when they present for treatment of pain. It is known that African-Americans in general often have longer ED wait times than other patients. Because patients with SCD in the US are much more likely to be African-Americans, it can be difficult to separate the effects of disease vs. race on SCD patient wait times. We attempted to disentangle these effects by examining a national sample of ED visits in the US. METHODS: We examined data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), which is conducted annually by the National Center for Health Statistics. Weights are provided to allow for the estimation of national level statistics. We examined NHAMCS data from 2003 through 2008. Our outcome variable was waiting time (in minutes) from ED arrival to being seen by a physician. Our primary independent variable was disease status, comparing patients with SCD to those with long bone fracture (LBF) and all other patients. We used a two-part approach for our analyses. First, we examined the association of disease status with wait times among all patients in the sample. We then restricted all analyses to the African-American sample of patients. Because of the highly right-skewed nature of the outcome variable, multivariable regressions were conducted using generalized linear models assuming a gamma distribution and a log link function. All analyses accounted for the complex design of the survey. RESULTS: An estimated 553,943,439 ED visits occurred over the study period, with LBF patients accounting for 1.1% of those visits (n = 5,929,085), and SCD patients accounting for 0.2% of those visits (n = 1,142,078). SCD patients were significantly younger than all non-SCD patients (27.6 vs. 36.9, p < 0.001), and were more likely than LBF patients and all other patients to be male (55% vs. 51% vs. 46%, p < 0.001), and to have Medicaid (55% vs. 16% vs. 24%, p < 0.001). SCD visits were more likely than LBF and all other visits to have severe pain (scores of 7 to 10) at triage (54% vs. 32% vs. 19%, p < 0.001), and more SCD visits (70%) compared to LBF visits (58%) and all other visits (56%) received high priority triage recommendations of level 1 or 2 (<15 minutes to 1 hour) (p = 0.005). Bivariate analyses found that SCD patient wait times were 25 minutes longer than LBF patients, and 13 minutes longer than all other patients (mean wait = 67 minutes vs. 42 minutes vs. 54 minutes, p < 0.0001). Accounting for the skewness in the data, waiting times for SCD patients were found to be 59% longer than LBF patients (p < 0.001), and 25% longer than all other patients (p = 0.03). After adjustment for age, sex, insurance, and race, SCD wait times remained 32% longer than LBF patients (p = 0.007), and 8% longer than all other patients, though the latter result was no longer significant (p = 0.463). SCD wait times were 38% longer than LBF patients after additional adjustment for assigned triage level and presenting level of pain (p = 0.001). After restricting all analyses to the African-American patient sample, SCD patients were still found to wait 51% longer than LBF patients after adjustment for age, sex, insurance, assigned triage level, and presenting level of pain (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to patients with LBF, and all other patients, SCD patients were consistently found to have longer wait times to see physicians in the ED. The disparity between SCD patients and all other patients appeared to be explained by patient race. Nevertheless, analyses restricted to African-American patients still found a significant disparity between SCD patients and patients with LBF. Our findings suggests that both the black race of SCD patients, and their status as SCD patients, contribute to longer wait times in the ED compared to other patient populations. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
The current research examined the intersection of social categorization and identity recognition to investigate whether and when one form of construal would dominate people’s responses to social targets. Using an automatic priming paradigm and manipulating prime duration to examine how familiarity with social targets and the time course of processing moderate construal, we asked participants to judge the familiarity and sex of faces (Experiments 1 and 2, respectively). The results revealed that both unfamiliar and familiar faces were initially categorized by sex but that familiar faces were quickly (and automatically) reclassified in terms of identity. Implications for models of face processing and person perception are discussed.

Abstract:
Extraction methods using Soxhlet extraction (SE), enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction (EE), semi-bionic extraction (SBE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) were evaluated for the yields of geniposidic acid (GPA) and geniposide (GPS) from the bark of Eucommia ulmoides. The results showed that the yields of GPA and GPS attained by EE and SBE were highest, respectively. Compared with various extraction methods for the extraction of GPA and GPS, the SBE was more efficient than other methods. There was no organic solvent used in SBE. The pH values of semi-bionic extraction were the same as in the human body. The results indicate that SBE can be used for large-scale and efficient extraction of GPA and GPS from plant materials. The time taken by SFE was longer than other methods, but the yields of GPA and GPS were the lowest. .

In this article, we explore how poetic inquiry informed by duoethnography enables us to know our parents better and to reflect on our relationships with them after their deaths. We are interested in how this process of inquiry deepens our thinking about the nature of research and writing as well as about teaching and community work. Through the lens of poetry, we have been able to see beyond the received family histories of whom our parents were and to fashion a more layered and nuanced picture not only of them, but also of the social forces that shaped them, and in turn shaped us as researchers and social activists. Sources for our work include Heather’s father’s poetry and Gisela’s poems, which draw from interviews with her mother and anecdotes her mother told her as she was growing up.Keywords: poetic inquiry; duoethnography; parents

Abstract:
Over the past three decades, the relative bank loan demand has changed due to the arising small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, banks in their operations face the problem of processing an ever-increasing number of loan applications. The aim of this paper is to develop an auxiliary approach to assessing the prior creditworthiness of long-term SME projects with nonstandard cash flows. This study reveals how the principles of value-based management can be incorporated into the process of borrower’s creditworthiness assessment to improve the process of screening loan applications. For this, the internal rate of return was used as a criterion for loan granting decision at the initial stage of loan underwriting. An algorithm for the preliminary evaluation of loan applications is proposed and is based on the principle of maximizing the shareholder value of banks. This algorithm helps to define the credit terms taking into consideration the distribution of positive cash flows throughout the project’s expected economic life, calculate the possible real effective interest rate concerning the borrower’s nonstandard cash flow schedule, make a rough analysis on the economic efficiency of lending and state the necessary criterion to initiate the procedure of loan underwriting for the projects with nonstandard cash flow schedules. The proposed estimation algorithm stemming from the IRR-approach for the cash flow analysis can also be initially used by a borrower as a tool for credit solvency self-testing via screening of periods with corresponding cash flows that can be used for loan servicing.

Abstract:
476 Background: Effective treatment for uresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) or metastatic pancreatic cancer is limited and has a poor prognosis with a five year survival rate of 6.7%. FOLFIRINOX has been studied as a neoadjuvant therapy for LAPC and has a response rate of 32%. We set out to investigate which factors, if any, have a meaningful impact on time to disease progression within this cohort of patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted. All patients who recieved FOLFIRINOX at our institution from 2011-2014 were included. 16 of 19 had unresectable LAPC or metastatic disease at time of diagnosis. A few recieved FOLFIRINOX upon first progression after adjuvant therapy. Results: See Table. Conclusions: Novel approaches are being used to get patients to R0 resection if they have borderline resectable pancreatic cancer or unresectable LAPC consisting of combination chemotherapy followed by radiation. Metastatic patients or unresectable LAPC who do not undergo surgery have limited survival. Reviewing our data we found that the addition of radiation in the metastatic setting may impact time to progression as determined by RECIST criteria. Of the three patients who had the longest time to progression, two were metastatic and both underwent palliative RT to the primary pancreatic lesion. Incorporation of RT to the primary lesion upon completion of FOLFIRINOX therapy should be considered as an innovative approach to increase time to progression and potentially progression free survival and overall survival. Clinical trials randomizing selected patients with metastatic or unresected LAPC to FOLFIRINOX followed by RT versus no RT should be considered. [Table: see text]

+ ervilhaca-comum (Vicia sativa)/soja - AZEV; (5) milho + mucuna-cinza (Stizolobium cinereum)/soja - MUC; (6) milho/nabo forrageiro (Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiferus Metzg.)/soja - NFO; e (7) campo nativo - CNA.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper presents some partial data obtained in studies on basic indicators of the development of Czech agriculture within the time interval of 1980–2001. The statistical analysis, carried out within a spatially defined territory, enabled to compare the average level and variability of gross plant production, gross animal production and gross agricultural production (in fixed prices of the year 1989) during the period of transformation of the centrally planned economy to free market economy on the one hand, and to quantify their dynamics and structure on the other. Using the method of time series, the authors analyse absolute and relative changes in production and sale of the selected plant and animal commodities in the period of 1990–2001.

Abstract:
We extend Borel summability methods to the analysis of the 3D Navier–Stokes initial value problem, [Formula: see text] where [Formula: see text] is the Hodge projection to divergence-free vector fields. We assume that the Fourier transform norms [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are finite. We prove that the integral equation obtained from (*) by Borel transform and Écalle acceleration, Û (k, q), is exponentially bounded for q in a sector centered on ℝ+, where q is the inverse Laplace dual to 1/tn for n ≥ 1. This implies in particular local existence of a classical solution to (*) for t ∈ (0, T), where T depends on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Global existence of the solution to NS follows if ‖Û(⋅, q)‖l1 has subexponential bounds as q → ∞. If f = 0, then the converse is also true: if NS has global solution, then there exists n ≥ 1 for which ‖Û(⋅, q)‖ necessarily decays. More generally, if the exponential growth rate in q of Û is α, then a classical solution to NS exists for t ∈ (0, α-1/n). We show that α can be better estimated based on the values of Û on a finite interval [0, q0]. We also show how the integral equation can be solved numerically with controlled errors. Preliminary numerical calculations of the integral equation over a modest [0, 10], q-interval for n = 2 corresponding to Kida ([21]) initial conditions, though far from being optimized or rigorously controlled, suggest that this approach gives an existence time for 3D Navier–Stokes that substantially exceeds classical estimate.

Abstract:
William Thornton's On Labour, Its Wrongful Claims and Rightful Dues, Its Actual Present and Possible Future was a contribution to the social debate of the 1860s. In the context of an attack on the vulgar wage-fund theory, which was wielded in popular discourse to emphasize the futility of trade unions, Thornton offered a more general assault on what he labelled “demand and supply.” John Stuart Mill had expected Thornton's book to play an important role in furthering his own campaign in support of trade union legalization, but the book received mixed reviews. Most critics missed the opportunity to respond to Thornton's social commentary, and focused instead on his analysis of demand and supply. The negative reviews found the theory wanting and, to John Stuart Mill's chagrin, dismissed the entire book. But the positive reviews were even more devastating from Mill's perspective. Not only did they ignore the social analysis, with which Mill was in agreement, but they seemed convinced that Thornton had demolished the demand and supply theory. Since Mill was then trying to consolidate the intellectual basis of the Liberal party on the foundation of classical political economy, this was hardly an outcome he could accept. The recantation article, which combined a sympathetic treatment of Thornton's social analysis with a criticism of his economic analysis, was the inevitable result (see Forget 1992).

Abstract:
Readers have long notedthe pervasiveness of sympathy in George Eliot's work. But why always sympathy? One cannot fully answer this question without attending to a crucial and yet still understudied context for Eliot's work: evangelicalism. It is from evangelical thought and practice that she gleaned the concept of what I will call sympathetic “insight,” which evangelicals privileged for its ability to “see” the real and to move between the dichotomous barriers of the in/visible and in/external. I want to suggest that even after Eliot no longer found compelling its accompanying theology, sympathetic “insight” persisted in her imagination as a way to see into and within her realist fictional worlds.

Abstract:
Access to finance is one of the most significant challenges for the creation, survival and growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially, innovative ones. However, forced bank mergers by Central bank of Indonesia may hurdle SME financing and growth. Using the financial data of seven Indonesian bank mergers within 2004-2009, periods three years before and after the merger, this study examines whether bank mergers may hurdle SME financing and growth. The study concludes that bank mergers in Indonesia decreased SME crediting but increased bank performance and SME crediting no longer influenced bank performance either. Bank mergers hurdle SME financing and growth.

Abstract:
Greece entered NATO in order to guarantee its existence against the revisionism of the Balkan communist states during the Cold War. The rise of Greek-Turkish rivalry during the 1950s and 1960s and its climax, the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, caused Greece’s withdrawal from NATO structure from 1974 to 1980. After the end of the Cold War Greece attempted to form a multilateral approach in its foreign policy and secure its interests in both the Balkan area and the Eastern Mediterranean. The new unstable environment of the early 21st century and Greece’s economic crisis complicated Greece’s position in NATO. Still the macro-historic parameters of Greece’s identity as a sea power confirm its ties to the Atlantic world and predict a possible realignment of Greece in an increasingly unstable European framework that could well see the demise of the European Union.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The view that charity consists in an expansion of existing interpersonal relations is rather misleading. We need to see it as a radical transformation, of existing relations, even if this suspension is only temporary. In charity we see a person as someone who is no longer capable of reacting appropriately. Someone who is no longer capable of behaving as a „person‟ nevertheless continues to be a person. She does not lose her personal sanctity or dignity even if she has lost a practical grasp on controlling and guiding the course of her life. Today we often tend to reduce charity to a compassionate form of helping, or aid-giving, such as when materials, doctors and psychologists are sent to regions that are torn apart by war or famine. It is much easier to understand charity when it can be measured against the reduction of physical and emotional distress. It is much more difficult to understand charity in cases where aid proves to be powerless, when there is no measurable return or change that is brought about. While ethics cannot teach us what to do once compassion, benevolence and forgiveness fail to make any difference, prayer can help us to move forward. Praying for others, more specifically, the long-suffering involved in prayer, is a particularly important form of charity. It has the power to lift us above our inability to do anything helpful. We pray at the very moment when we experience our powerlessness to help.
