Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Through the following pages I will catalogue my directorial process of researching, rehearsing and reflecting on my thesis production of Les Belles-soeurs by Michel Tremblay. The production ran at the Frederic Wood Theatre from March 16 to April 1, 2017 and was a critical and popular success. Les Belles-soeurs utilized the talents of fifteen women actors from the UBC theatre program, as well as student designers, production personnel and crew. This written thesis will attempt to illustrate my creative choices, script analysis, and staging ideas in relation to my research, and in collaboration with the other artists and design team. An effort will be made to highlight what worked well, what changed, and what perhaps should have changed. There are also notes from my Director’s Diary beginning at the start of my Masters work. These notes chronicle, over two years, my learning curve here at UBC and are included because they informed the process of my thesis production. In addition to a detailed analysis of my process with Les Belles-soeurs, therefore, there is also some analysis of other plays that led up to my thesis production. All of this informed my work on Les Belles-soeurs and are reflected upon within this document as part of my Masters work.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Theatre and Film, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
In the psychoanalytical framework, the thesis investigates the impact of autistic symptoms on the siblings life and on the construction of the brotherly link. It is based on one hand on twelve clinical interviews led with adolescent and grown-up siblings, and on the other hand on a practice of three years of a sibling group led with nine siblings of the age of the latency. The analysis of interviews showed that autism may reveal the brother as a real foreigner ; this is an obstacle in the process of identification in the sibship and lake autistic symptoms, notably violence, incomprehensible for the siblings. Besides, the researcher assessed the sibling group, studied the therapeutic processes, and the consequences on the brotherly link (work towards the process of identification), and led a critical thinking about its theoretical and clinical framework

Aimsiranun, Usanee. "La citoyenneté européenne et l'État providence." Phd thesis, Université de Strasbourg, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00863902.

Full text
Abstract:

Coleman, Anthony Patrick. "Lactantius and the Doctrine of Providence." Thesis, Boston College, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104174.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Stephen F. Brown<br>This dissertation examines the doctrine of providence as it appears in the works of the North African Latin apologist, L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius (c.245 - c.325). In the early fourth century the Roman Empire was struggling to come to terms with its own religious self-identity. While the persecutions under Diocletian were still raging, the rhetorician Lactantius authored several apologetic works in order to advocate for Christianity's inclusion into the traditional Roman culture. Lactantius' apologetic goal is twofold: 'to defend and build up' (defendere et instituere) (cf. DI 5.4.3). The apologist is not merely concerned with the tearing down of fallacious arguments, but also with the constructing of a positive Christian theology; in Lactantius' own words, with the totius doctrinae substantiam (DI 5.4.3). Throughout his apologetic corpus the doctrine of providence functions as Lactantius' grundaxiom; a foundation upon which he can construct his own positive Christian theology. At the same time, the near unanimity among philosophers as to the existence of providence allowed Lactantius to engage his non-Christian audience through a concept of shared philosophical inheritance. By employing the doctrine of providence to support and integrate his entire theological system, therefore, Lactantius has made the linchpin of his theology a doctrine which finds common ground among both Christians and non-Christians<br>Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014<br>Submitted to: Boston College. Greder, David Frederic. "Providence and the 1641 Irish Rebellion." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1613.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1641 rebellion is unique in early modern European violence and armed struggles because of the vast collection of over 8,000 eyewitness accounts known as the 1641 depositions. My dissertation seeks to utilize the depositions to uncover the religious worldviews of early modern Irish men and women. Through close readings of the depositions, as well as polemical literature which cited the depositions as source material, the following chapters analyze how survivors and polemicists alike invoked religious language to despicted confessional differences and the workings of divine providence in seventeenth-century Ireland. In particular, this dissertation focuses on two related themes: how refugees described the conflicts and violence they had experienced and how eyewitness accounts were co-opted and edited by later authors to serve as propaganda. The depositions clearly portray deponents' understandings of differences in religious identity and their familiarity with providential explanations of the crises to which they had f victim. While much subsequent polemical literature presented the conflict in strictly confessionalized terms, a comparative analysis of contemporary propaganda alongside the depositions shows that strategic editing of source materials betrayed the deponents' nuanced depictions of religious identity and their providential interpretations of the progress of the violence of the 1640s. Broadening the context of the rebellion to include similar providentialist propaganda from the Thirty Years War, this dissertation shows the extent to which providential imagery in eyewitness accounts and war propaganda polarized religious identities in print. In making this point, my research contributes to broader interests in the over-simplification of religious language and imagery to define in-groups and out-groups in wartime rhetoric.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary focus of this dissertation is the doctrine of the Providence of God and it is approached from a distinctive perspective – that of the doctrine of the Trinity. Its fundamental thesis is that the adoption of a trinitarian perspective on Providence provides us with a conceptual paradigm in which varying theological emphases, which often divide understandings of Providence, are best understood in a form of paradoxical tension or creative balance with each being correctly understood only in the context that the other provides. To demonstrate this, it addresses four issues of Providence that have on occasion divided understandings of Providence in the past and which have become significant issues of contention in the contemporary debate on Providence occasioned by a proposal known as Open Theism. These issues concern the nature of divine transcendence, sovereignty, immutability and impassibility and how each should be understood in the context of divine Providence. Through a detailed examination of three recent trinitarian theologies, which have emanated from the three main communities of the Christian church, it argues that a trinitarian perspective is able to provide significant illumination and explication of these identified issues of Providence and of the tensions that are often intrinsic to this doctrine. In relation to these identified issues of Providence, it affirms tensional truths in our understanding of the issues of Providence and an articulation that necessarily incorporates a binary form of language – that is, utilising language of both-and rather than either-or. In other words, it posits that divine transcendence ought to be held in paradoxical tension with divine immanence; divine sovereignty ought to be held in paradoxical tension with human responsibility; and divine immutability and impassibility ought not to be understood as immobility or impassivity but as affirming the paradoxical tension of active constancy. The articulation of these tensional truths is followed and completed by an examination of how they might be applied pastorally in the specific area of prayer and its relationship to Providence. Consequently, this dissertation not only constructively impacts our understanding of divine Providence but also significantly advances the contemporary debate on Providence concerning Open Theism.

Searching trhough some of this object paths its manufacturing, the people who wore it, the cities where it circulated this paper proposes the interpretation of objetcs as a method to elaborate a dress cultural biography. The material analyses of RG 7091, approached here as a historical document, allowed to question the idea of a totalitarian fashion hegemony over all forms of dress. Through the interpretation of certain material aspects, elements and articulation of the dress, I discuss some timely and spacially perceptions as well as youthness and modesty. Abstract:
The clinical evidence, in practically all patient histories even remotely related to sibling relationships either as a wreck or as a mooring point, designates this other, this intimate peer, neither father nor mother, whose intense proximity could not but have left traces. Genesis, mythology and literature abound with stories featuring brotherly love, full of sound and fury, from which the evidence of tragic and conflictual nature of this relationship emerges. Far from the ideals of brotherhood and fraternity that we hold dear, we are touching here the heart of the most primal competitive fantasms. Paradoxically, psychoanalysis is almost silent about the impact on the psychic organization and the overall significance of these fratricidal, incestuous and fusional issues characteristic of the relationships between siblings. This study was born from the double observations of multiform, cacophonous sibling relationships and silent psychoanalysis, in order to elucidate and understand the mysterious fraternal complex, so often denied or despised, in order to restore it to the rank of a complex that is both authentic and singular. We attempted here to conceptually dissect this complex and to define its articulation around the Oedipus within an organization that is not based on the classic triangular relationship but instead is an œdipo-fraternal quadrangulation. This theoretical model with four apexes provides an opportunity to incorporate in clinical practice, within the overall psychic apparatus, expanded horizontal sibling relationships whose main function is striving towards the acquisition of a self, oscillating between the alter and the ego without ever confusing them

Paris 4, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040226.

Full text
Abstract:
»<br>The subject of providence and its treatment by Maimonides are the term of the Guide of the Perplexed, in the two senses of the word : the end and the aim of the entire work. Chapters 16 and 17 of Book III, the laying out of the problem and the review of doctrines on providence, form the axis of our study, which is divided into two parts : the first part, a work on doctrinal history, is devoted to examining Maimonides reviews of previous doctrines (Epicure, Aristotle, Kalam theologians and Judaism) ; the second, as a philosophical exegesis, takes the providential doctrine of Maimonides as its specific object. This second part goes back to the premises of the problem of providence : the question of evil, or theodicy. It also covers the additional — albeit essential — topics of divine causality and science. It then points out the close link between the concepts of tutelary providence, intelligeance and uniqueness defined as the ultimate perfection of man beyond its perishable individuality, reached by dint of intelligeance and thanks to which “he is with God and God is with him”

Constantini, Laurent. Thesis, Paris Est, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PEST2002.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sister Republics were created in Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands through military intervention, during the French Revolution, and their constitutions are very much alike that of the Directoire. Of these ten Constitutions, adopted between 1796 and 1799, some were simply granted by France while others were passed on a more autonomous basis. At a time when the European powers were unable to contain the expansion of the Great nation, the latter wanted to surround itself with Republics built in its image, allied, even docile so as to surround itself in a protective glacis. These Constitutions were, thus, set up thanks to the French army's action, although they were meant to enforce the freedom of these revolutionized peoples. Freed from foreign dominion or from a non-equalitarian regime, they would experience emancipation through the republican ideal expressed in their constitutions. However, the Constitution de l'an III, upon which they were designed, was itself the expression of a dilemma. Thermidorians wanted to put an end to the Jacobin episode, while maintaining the gains of the republican regime. The Sister Republics are, hence, often described as the place of the constitutional experiments which could not be done in France. It is then question, through constitutional analysis, to compare the various translations of the republican ideal found in those texts, and to show the differences between them and the French model of 1795, so as to find out how adaptable they are. This investigation into the originality of the Constitutions of the Sister Republics in front of the republican ideal, will deal with the themes which are constitutive of this idea : equality, rights, liberties, protection of rights, citizenship, sovereignty, political representation and separation of powers

Belmonte, Laetitia. "Les relations fraternelles saisies par le droit." Toulouse 1, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000TOU10083.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
In a duly changing context, the aim of this research is to explore the sibling network generated by a developing type of family pattern: the stepfamily. A pluridisciplinary approach enables first to conduct a social and historical study which brings out the successive social representations of that model and the complexity of its configuration no longer complying with the criterion of "together livingness" which characterizes the currently prevailing family definition. Then, an etymological and theoretical study of the French concept of "fratrie" connected with concrete observation emphasizes the complex semantic evolution of that term, along both the synchronic and diachronic axes. It justifies the joined terms "fratrie recomposee" and defines the theoretical framework based upon the redundant problematics around the concept. Finally, developing the hypotheses elaborated in a previous empirical exploration, an inquiry by thorough interviews of young people significantly involved with stepsiblings, brings to light the strategies and boundaries of the sibling assimilation. It also emphasizes original factors, apart from living together and blood relations, attesting not only the new family member's search for their genealogical places but also the original dynamics operating at the horizontal level

Lim, Joung Bin. "A Thomistic account of divine providence and human freedom." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4778.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a Thomistic account of divine providence and human freedom. I defend and develop the traditional view by adopting some contemporary interpretations of it. I argue that the Thomist solution provides an idea that divine providence is compatible with libertarian freedom. In the first chapter I provide the definition of divine providence, which is God’s continuing action in preserving his creation. In another word, not only does God create the universe and conserve it in existence at every moment, but he also guides it according to his purpose. In the second chapter, I critically examine three solutions to the problem of providence and human freedom. They are compatibilism, open theism, and Molinism. I argue that the solutions are unsatisfactory in that they too easily give up some of the important doctrines concerning God and humans. In Chapter III, I develop a Thomistic account of divine providence and human freedom. The Thomistic theory, I argue, well preserves traditional doctrines concerning both God and humans without damaging either providence or libertarian freedom for humans. In particular, I briefly examine some characteristics of God, which are timelessness and his activity as the First Cause. Based on these features of God’s nature, I show how human beings enjoy entire freedom in the libertarian sense although God has complete sovereignty over human free choices in the world. If the present view is correct, what makes it less attractive is that the theory seems to make God the author of sin. So I finally deal with the problem of moral responsibility and the problem of evil and sin, showing that humans, not God, are the author of sin. I contend that God wills that humans sin but he has a certain purpose for doing so within his providence. But that never destroys human freedom, so humans are responsible for their decisions and actions. Within the Thomistic explanation we can have a logically coherent view of compatibility of divine providence with libertarian freedom of humans. In the last chapter, I summarize my argument and deal with some implications of it.

Abstract:
The Foundation of the Good Shepherd was set up by Mother Marie-Euphrasie in the XIX!h century. The specificmission of the order was to take care of the poor, and particularly of women and children, to ease their distress, givethem support and encourage them to make their way back into society. ln the UK, the Good Shepherd institutes were known as Magdalen Asylums, for the biblical figure of Mary Magdalene, a repentant sinner who became a disciple of Christ; the vocation of these Magdalen institutions was to shelter prostitutes and single mothers. They quickly came to specialise in laundry work- a symbolic task, as these women had above all to wash away their sins. During the reign of Queen Victoria, puritanism became more severe, and the figure of Mary Magdalena came to embody the "whore", the "fallen" woman. Three Acts of Parliament were passed to curb the expansion of prostitution and venereal diseases. Il was only in the late 1990s that voices were raised to denounce the abuse and ill-treatment committed in some of these institutions, voices that were soon picked up and amplified in a number of films, and in particular Peter Mullan's The Magdalena Sisters. The aim of this study is to understand why such things happened, and to study the role played by the media in the process of their exposure and to what extent they can be said to make History

Abstract:
The evident existence of evil does not appear to be compatible with the traditional theistic view of Divine Justice. On the one hand, in the course of our daily lives we observe that the innocent suffer undeservedly and the wicked prosper abundantly<br>and on the other we have the religious principle assuring us that God is just. This contradiction which is known as the problem of evil constitutes one of the greatest challenges to theistic religions. Moses Maimonides, the foremost Jewish philosopher of the Middle Ages offers a solution to this problem through his theory of providence. In this thesis, I argue that for Maimonides providence comes in stages and his theodicy is formed by the first two stages of his theory of providence that I take to be comprising of essentially three stages. Given the two seemingly antagonistic positions that comprise the problem of evil, how he reconciles them through the first two stages of his theory of providence by synthesizing creatively the religious and philosophical principles is the subject of this thesis. In this context, I will also consider how he further strengthens his philosophical position through the analysis of a biblical parable, i.e. the Book of Job.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an extended critical analysis of the methodological thought of the Cambridge historian Herbert Butterfield (1900-1979). It is based on the full range of his published works, as well as unpublished material. It is a contribution to the history of historiography, and to the theory of history. The thesis concentrates on the relationship between Butterfield’s views on historical research and historiographical narration, and his concept of a ‘historical process’ which was the expression of a ‘providential order’. The principal problem in Butterfield’s writings is the contradiction between his advocacy of a ‘technical history’ seen as free and independent of any interpretative presupposition, and his belief in Providence and its utilisation in the course of his historiography. Firstly, the thesis argues that Butterfield employs his own presuppositions even without making explicit references to his belief in Providence. Secondly, it explains why he embraced and advocated two contradictory standpoints. Butterfield’s position is best clarified with reference to the content of his Christian beliefs. It is argued that Butterfield regarded all non-Christian interpretations of history as distorting oversimplifications. They were for him not fully scientific and rigorous, because they selected some phenomenon, or principle, or institution arising within human history and made it the central interpretative principle. He saw his own practice as exempt from this criticism. This thesis argues that Butterfield’s position is nevertheless interpretative. However, it is argued that Butterfield’s critique of ideologically based historiographic distortions and oversimplifications is important in the assessment of rival interpretations of history.
