Abstract:
Abstract We propose a method for increasing the speed and spectral efficiency of information transmission over soliton communication lines, based on algorithms for solving inverse and direct scattering problems, in the frame of a modern soliton orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SOFDM) approach. The proposed method uses a simultaneous phase and frequency coding. This phase–frequency coding method retains all the technological advantages of the SOFDM method, and due to the additional frequency coding, a noticeable increase in the information transfer rate over the soliton optical lines is expected. Numerical modeling confirmed the proposed method for telecommunication applications’ prospects.

Abstract:
<p>The treatment of wastewater plays a crucial role in protecting the environment and ensuring the sustainable use of resources. This research paper presents a new methodology for managing wastewater treatment operations, utilising Self-Organizing Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller (SOFSMC) to enhance the efficiency of treatment procedures. MATLAB Simulink functions as a simulation tool that facilitates meticulous analysis. SOFSMC presents a control strategy that is both adaptive and robust. This strategy effectively regulates crucial parameters, including dissolved oxygen levels, pH levels, and flow rates. It achieves this within the challenging and complex framework of wastewater treatment, which is characterised by dynamic and nonlinear dynamics. Using a SOFSMC for wastewater treatment control is novel approach. This novel technique creates a self-learning, dynamic system using fuzzy logic (FL) and sliding mode control (SMC). This unique approach can autonomously adapt to wastewater treatment processes' complex and nonlinear dynamics, improving efficiency, resource optimisation, and system dependability. The results emphasise the potential of SOFSMC as a revolutionary approach for wastewater treatment. This approach can improve treatment effectiveness, conserve resources, and protect the environment. The proposed method SOFSMC, exhibits commendable outcomes, with an integrated absolute error of 0.082 mg/L, an integrated square differential error of 0.091 mg/L, and a response time of 1.85 seconds This study offers a substantial advancement in the field of wastewater treatment regulation, highlighting its significance in the context of sustainable water management and environmental conservation.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract This paper addresses the issue of Sofiia Palaiologina’s religious identity during her time in Moscow, by analyzing the Russian chronicles’ accounts of her marriage negotiations. It suggests that the official Muscovite account offered a carefully tailored narrative of a pious tsarevna as an attempt to explain why the grand prince negotiated the marriage with Rome, and to integrate Sofiia into the official Orthodox narrative of the dynasty. Although contradicted by her background and largely missing from other Russian accounts of the event, the Orthodox elements of Sofiia’s identity emphasized by the official chronicles have been interpreted as proof of the “Byzantine lineage” brought by her to Moscow. The local context, namely the opposition of metropolitan Filip and the current ecclesiastical debates, as well as Sofiia’s later image as “the Roman,” explain how this official narrative sought to appropriate Sofiia for Muscovite ideology.

As outras duas refutam diretamente a possibilidade de haver no universo tal situação de equilíbrio e simetria perfeitos, de modo que o próprio sofisma perde seu sentido.

Abstract:
Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTMRI) as a noninvasive modality providing in vivo anatomical information allows determination of fiber connections which leads to brain mapping. The success of DTMRI is very much algorithm dependent, and its verification is of great importance due to limited availability of a gold standard in the literature. In this study, unsupervised artificial neural network class, namely, self-organizing maps, is employed to discover the underlying fiber tracts. A common artificial diffusion tensor resource, named “phantom images for simulating tractography errors” (PISTE), is used for the accuracy verification and acceptability of the proposed approach. Four different tract geometries with varying SNRs and fractional anisotropy are investigated. The proposed method, SOFMAT, is able to define the predetermined fiber paths successfully with a standard deviation of (0.8–1.9) × 10−3depending on the trajectory and the SNR value selected. The results illustrate the capability of SOFMAT to reconstruct complex fiber tract configurations. The ability of SOFMAT to detect fiber paths in low anisotropy regions, which physiologically may correspond to either grey matter or pathology (abnormality) and uncertainty areas in real data, is an advantage of the method for future studies.

Abstract:
The shallow-water shrimp fishery is an important social and economic sector in Mozambique. However, catches of shrimps have been declining over the last decades, presumably due to poor recruitment. Climate change has been proposed as a potential cause of increased mesoscale eddy activity over the Mozambique Channel, which may have played a role in poor shrimp recruitment. Indeed, stronger eddies could transport matter, including increased numbers of shrimp larvae, from the coast to unfavourable offshore areas. In this study we used a biophysical model to investigate the influence of eddies on the dispersal of larvae of two commercial shrimp species (Penaeus indicus and Metapenaeus monoceros) from their spawning areas on the Sofala Bank. We found some 5 large events of offshore or southward transport loss (>10% loss) from the Sofala Bank caused by eddies, occurring sporadically. The northern and central Sofala Bank areas were the most affected by larvae lost offshore. Simulations revealed that temperature-induced larval mortality, associated with cold-core cyclonic eddies, could also play a role in larval loss of up to 40%, which is greater than the larval transport loss associated with the eddy circulation. However, when they survived, larvae transported offshore could travel long distances (600–1600 km in 15 days), potentially promoting connectivity with other stocks in the region.

Abstract:
Thanks to the popularity of GPU and the growth of its computational power, more and more deep learning tasks, such as face recognition, image retrieval and word embedding, can take advantage of extreme classification to improve accuracy. However, it remains a big challenge to train a deep model with millions of classes efficiently due to the huge memory and computation consumption in the last layer. By sampling a small set of classes to avoid the total classes calculation, sampling-based approaches have been proved to be an effective solution. But most of them suffer from the following two issues: i) the important classes are ignored or only partly sampled, such as the methods using random sampling scheme or retrieval techniques of low recall (e.g., locality-sensitive hashing), resulting in the degradation of accuracy; ii) inefficient implementation owing to incompatibility with GPU, like selective softmax. It uses hashing forest to help select classes, but the search process is implemented in CPU. To address the above issues, we propose a new sampling-based softmax called ANN Softmax in this paper. Specifically, we employ binary quantization with inverted file system to improve the recall of important classes. With the help of dedicated kernel design, it can be totally parallelized in mainstream training framework. Then, we find the size of important classes that are recalled by each training sample has a great impact on the final accuracy, so we introduce sample grouping optimization to well approximate the full classes training. Experimental evaluations on two tasks (Embedding Learning and Classification) and ten datasets (e.g., MegaFace, ImageNet, SKU datasets) demonstrate our proposed method maintains the same precision as Full Softmax for different loss objectives, including cross entropy loss, ArcFace, CosFace and D-Softmax loss, with only 1/10 sampled classes, which outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques. Moreover, we implement ANN Soft-max in a complete GPU pipeline that can accelerate the training more than 4.3X. Equipped our method with a 256 GPUs cluster, the time of training a classifier of 300 million classes on our SKU-300M dataset can be reduced to ten days.

Abstract:
The Central Region of Mozambique (Sofala Province) bordering on the active cyclone area of the southwestern Indian Ocean has been particularly affected by climate hazards. The Cyclone Idai, which hit the region in March 2019 with strong winds causing extensive flooding and a massive loss of life, was the strongest recorded tropical cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere. The aim of this study was to use pre- and post-cyclone Idai Landsat satellite images to analyze temporal changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) across the Sofala Province. Specifically, we aimed—(i) to quantify and map the changes in LULC between 2012 and 2019; (ii) to investigate the correlation between the distance to Idai’s trajectory and the degree of vegetation damage, and (iii) to determine the damage caused by Idai on different LULC. We used Landsat 7 and 8 images (with 30 m resolution) taken during the month of April for the 8-year period. The April Average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) over the aforementioned period (2012–2018, pre-cyclone) was compared with the values of April 2019 (post-cyclone). The results showed a decreasing trend of the productivity (NDVI 0.5 to 0.8) and an abrupt decrease after the cyclone. The most devastated land use classes were dense vegetation (decreased by 59%), followed by wetland vegetation (−57%) and shrub land (−56%). The least damaged areas were barren land (−23%), barren vegetation (−27%), and grassland and dambos (−27%). The Northeastern, Central and Southern regions of Sofala were the most devastated areas. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient between the relative vegetation change activity after Idai (NDVI%) and the distance to Idai’s trajectory was 0.95 (R-square 0.91), suggesting a strong positive linear correlation. Our study also indicated that the LULC type (vegetation physiognomy) might have influenced the degree of LULC damage. This study provides new insights for the management and conservation of natural habitats threatened by climate hazards and human factors and might accelerate ongoing recovery processes in the Sofala Province.

Abstract The marriage of Sofiia Palaiologina and Ivan III of Moscow has been the subject of much speculation about Russia and Byzantium but little analysis of the reality of her role in Russian history. We know very little about her activity as the wife of the grand prince, though that may be because of the character of the chronicle sources. In the relations of Moscow and Lithuania concerning the marriage of her daughter Elena to Grand Prince Alexander her role can be glimpsed behind the protocol, perhaps because the sources are diplomatic records. After her death Sofiia acquired another role: the legend of the miraculous birth of Vasilii III was one of the foundational stories behind the annual pilgrimage of the Russian court to the Holy Trinity-St. Sergii Monastery.

Her travel notes, rich in deep observations and reflections on Chinese socio-political life, introduced readers to an unknown world of a distant culture. These descriptions not only expanded the horizons of Ukrainian readers but also played a fundamental role in Ukrainian-Chinese communication, laying the groundwork for mutual understanding and cultural exchange between two nations. By highlighting cultural differences and similarities in her works, Sofiia Yablonska created a kind of bridge that facilitated the convergence and mutual enrichment of Ukrainian and Chinese cultures. Methods. The study employed the following methodological approaches: the method of analysis and synthesis allowed for identifying key features and trends in the documentary prose of early 20th-century travel writers; the comparative method enabled the discovery of similarities and differences in the socio-cultural practices and political tendencies of China and Ukraine in the 1930s. Results. Sofiia Yablonska's personal travel experience and professional skills played a crucial role in her methods of depicting the image of China in her travelogue «From the Land of Rice and Opium». Thanks to her knowledge of photography and cinematography, artistic talent, resilience, and passion despite challenging travel conditions, Ukrainina travaler was able to fully capture the living conditions of early 20th-century China. In her quest to reveal the true China, she deliberately minimized contact with Europeans, prioritizing close communication with the Chinese people. Her descriptions reveal the social, historical, and national characteristics of China at that time, including issues of corruption, war, opium addiction, and European influence. Her travelogue provides insights into the unique traits of Chinese reality and highlights the differences in worldview between Ukrainians and Chinese nations. Conclusions. The conclusion presents the thesis that the multifaceted presentation of material and the multidimensional narrative style in Sofiia Yablonska’s work make it a valuable source for linguistic, psycholinguistic, and social studies, offering a deeper understanding of both cultural features and interpersonal relations in contemporary Chinese society.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
The prevailing social situation in a society at any given time determines the temperament of its literature. African literature of the post–independence period is generally reactive in temperament. This emergent trend in African literature is as a result of the prevailing economic, social and political situations in most African nations. In Nigerian society, for instance, there is inequality, injustice, unemployment, hunger, marginalization, environmental degradation, corruption, political instability, socio-economic ills and religious violence. Obviously, these suffocating experiences are bound to generate protests and conflicts arising from people who are dissatisfied. Drama and prose have been mostly deployed to confront these unjust and inhuman situations. However, this paper focuses mainly on the selected plays authored by Zulu Sofola and Tess Onwueme. The study is basically a survey of Zulu Sofola and Tess Onwueme’s selected plays which explore the thematic concern of this paper. Content analysis of the plays reveals that protest can be used to resist and protest all oppressive structures in society.

Abstract:
Ultimately, contemporary Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) were introduced in the rehabilitation practice. We use Exoskeletons, virtual reality, robotic rehabilitation with Locomat (Hocoma system for balance and gait training) and ThyroMotion system (for grasp training). Our purpose was to emphasize the impact of robotic rehabilitation in the process of recovery of patients with neurological complications of COVID-19, as follows: cerebral vascular accidents, spinal ischemic stroke, relapses of multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, development of rare diseases (as cerebellar ataxia or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis /motor neuron disease), etc. We present typical and rare clinical cases (consequences and complications of COVID-19), treated by robotic neurorehabilitation. Our results demonstrated positive effects of ICT-application on the neuroplasticity, functional recovery and quality of life of neurological patients. We consider introduction of robotics as necessary tool in the process of neurorehabilitation.
