Abstract:
A case of an intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation error due to the presence of a soft contact lens (CL) is described. During preparation of a routine cataract surgery for a patient in the operating room, a soft CL was discovered on the patient’s surgical eye by the scrub nurse. Further, questioning revealed that the patient was a regular CL wearer and had possibly worn them during pre-operative biometric measurement, suggesting a potential error in his IOL calculation. Surgery was not performed, and the patient was given a CL holiday. Examination of the pre-operative B-scan ultrasound by t

Biometric recognition is an advanced technology that employs physical features (such as fingerprint, iris and face capture) and behavioural features (such as gait, signature and voice) to identify people. Biometric features are reliable and valid ways to describe the unique properties of individuals, but there are often rigorous requirements on the position and characteristics of devices used for data acquisition. Since biometric features can be difficult to capture at a distance, soft biometric features, such as height, weight, skin colour and gender, have received much attention. Although th

An extensive research is conducted to develop the matching algorithm to mimic the human ability to recognize and match faces. Human ability to recognize and match faces, however, is not errorless and it serves as the main argument precluding the visual facial matching from its use as an identification tool. Such techniques aim to suppress information on certain soft-biometric attributes (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity) in facial images and make unsolicited processing of the facial data infeasible.
