Therefore, many tools emerged that assist a collaborative software development process, including in particular tools for source code management (SCM) and version control. Abstract:
One of the cornerstones of the R system for statistical computing is the multitude of contributed packages making an extremely broad range of statistical techniques and other quantitative methods freely available. This study investigates which factors are the crucial determinants responsible for the participation of the package authors in the R project. For this purpose a survey was conducted among R package authors, collecting data on different types of participation in the R project, three psychometric scales (hybrid forms of motivation, work design characteristics, and values), as we

In recent years, the use of option pricing models to support IT investment decisions has been proposed in the MIS literature. In this paper, we discuss the practical advantages of such techniques for the selection of a software platform. First, we argue that traditional quantitative approaches to a cost-benefit analysis give only a partial picture of such decision situations: due to the long planning horizon required because of the time-consuming and resource-intensive implementation process, it is not possible to exactly predict which applications will, in fact, run on the system over time. This research presents new audio creation and processing tools for the virtual electronic music studio. The Tools were created by the author in the Max/MSP authoring environment. Some Tools model analog production techniques lost when studios moved inside computers, and provide additional functionality only possible in the digital world. Others make use of traditional processing ideas but add a level of control difficult to find in today's audio software plug-ins. The Tools are small, simple, real-time, and user-controllable devices for working with sound.

Information retrieval in large data spaces using formal, structure oriented patterns of features has many possible applications. We developed and studied a system that can be used to localize code segments in a program. The system is built using a generic and extensible object oriented framework and uses the Viterbi dynamic programming algorithm on simple Markov models to calculate a similarity measure between an abstractly described code segment and a possible instantiation of it in the program. The resulting system can be incorporated in a larger cooperative environment of CASE tools and can

Laptop performance---performance on a standard computer system without novel controllers, usually by a solo musician---is an increasingly common mode of live computer music. Its novelty is diminishing, however, and it is frequently described as being uninteresting. Laptop performance often lacks the sense of effort and active creation that we typically expect from live music, and exhibits little perceivable connection between the performer's actions and the resulting sound. Performance software designs tend to constrict the flow of control between the performer and the music, often leading art

To achieve the best performance, most computer languages are compiled, either ahead of time and statically, or dynamically during runtime by means of a Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler. Optimizing compilers are complex, however, and for many languages such as Ruby, Python, PHP, etc., an interpreter-based Virtual Machine (VM) offers a more flexible and portable implementation method, and moreover represents an acceptable trade-off between runtime performance and development costs. VM performance is typically maximized by use of the basic direct threading interpretation technique wh
