Abstract:
In the world of education the utilization of information technology is something that must be implemented, one of which is the use of the internet which can be used as a medium for disseminating information. Informatic Study Program of Sumbawa University of Technology is a study program that has graduated many alumni, but so far there is no portal that can manage information regarding the whereabouts of its alumni. This causes the study program difficulties in getting the latest information of the alumni when needed. Therefore, in this research a website-based alumni information system was designed which aims to facilitate the Informatic Study Program of Sumbawa University of Technology in managing and searching for information related to alumni data. In building this system researchers used the PHP programming language with CodeIgniter Framework and MySQL as the database. Then for the development of this software is using Waterfall model. It is hoped that when this system is implemented it can be used by study programs and alumni in managing alumni information, making it easier and faster to conduct data collection and reporting of existing alumni data.

Abstract:
Estimation of design flood is imperative for hydraulic designs of spillways and various other water resources development projects as well as very essential for flood risk assessment. The objective of the present study is to apply Geographical Information System (GIS) supported hydro informatics approach for estimation of design flash-flood in Bargi dam cross-section. A criterion used for estimation of design flash flood is validated by central water commission (CWC). A hydrologic modelling software (HEC-GeoHMS) is used for the delineation of basin characterises for simulation of the precipitation-runoff process of the dendritic basin system. The SUH (Synthetic Unit Hydrograph) and flood hydrographs for 25, 50 and 100 year return periods are computed along with time distribution curve which can be used to derive the time distribution co-efficient of storm rainfall in the sub-basins for the rainstorm of any duration. It is observed in this research that the peak characteristics of the design flash-flood are more perceptive to the various design storm pattern. It is demonstrated that flood hydrographs are important in flood-risk management. The results attained exhibit the capability of the flood hydrograph to describe the effects of different hydraulic systems.

Abstract:
Some of agriculture-food sector information systems are characterised by a high complexity and a large size. There are often many alternative solutions or technologies (implementation methods) and more then one possible way or approach to an information system design. Individual alternatives could considerably differ by their properties, e.g. costs of design of initial functionality, development and operational costs, run-time costs and technical parameters of the resulting information system (e.g. the access time). Unfortunately, existing metrics for quantification of this task usually do not deliver precise results but a rough estimate depending on many variable conditions. The paper will outline typical implementation methods and show approaches to assessment and comparison of certain types of properties of information systems for a computer support for management of large data systems, which use relational database. Authors presented part of these results also at the Agrarian Perspectives conference 2004 in the Applied Informatics session (Vrana I., Vrána J. 2004).

Abstract:
As "Voice over IP" has become more prevalent and many client and server applications have been designed for them, the VoIP industry has seen the need for faster, more capable systems to keep up. Traditionally, system speed-up has been achieved by increasing clock speeds but, conventional single-core CPU clock rates have peaked a few years ago due to very high power consumption and heating problems. Recently, system speed-up has been achieved by adding multiple processing cores to the same processor chip called multi-core processors. The existing VoIP applications cannot attain full benefit and efficiency of multi-core processors because of their sequential design. \VoIP paralleled client-server software for multicores" that can split up sequential code and run concurrently on multiple cores instead of trying to exploit single-core hardware is the solution. We have created a model of generic, open source paralleled VoIP-server (IOpen-VoIP) in C that suits multi-core and that can be used as a simulation tool. Furthermore, we have designed and implemented a tool for performance testing. It can be used for performance evaluation of IOpenVoIP and other SIP servers. The tool emulates thousands of communication sessions through a server. Performance testing can help developers to eliminate bottle necks in multi-core server design. On the other hand side, VoIP clients are not just used for voice and video communication over Internet. Along with audio and video they can carry other real time data i.e. patients ECG signals. Raw data is usually sent from one end and it is processed at other end which is a processor intensive task. We designed and implemented a graphical VoIP-Client which utilizes multi-core processors.

Cao, Lan. "Modeling Dynamics in Agile Software Development." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2005. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/cis_diss/4.

Full text
Abstract:
Agile software development challenges the traditional way of software development and project management. In rapidly changing environments, changing requirements and tight schedule constraints require software developers to take a different approach toward the process of software development. However, beyond a few case studies, surveys and studies focused on specific practices such as pair programming, the effectiveness and applicability of agile methods have not been established adequately. The objective of my research is to improve the understanding of and gain insights into these issues. For this purpose, I develop a system dynamic simulation model that considers the complex interdependencies among the variety of practices used in agile development. The model is developed on the basis of an extensive review of the literature as well as quantitative and qualitative data collected from real projects in seven organizations. The development of the model was guided by dynamic hypotheses on customer involvement, refactoring and quality of design. The model was refined and validated using data from independent projects. The model helps in answering important questions on the impact of customer behavior, cost of making changes and economics of pair programming. Experimentation with the model suggests that the cost of change is not constant; instead, its value changes cyclically and increases towards the later phase of development. Also, the results of simulation show that with no pair programming, fewer tasks are delivered and it costs more to deliver a task when compared to development with pair programming. Further, customer behavior has a major impact on project performance. The quality of customer feedback is found to be very critical to the successful of an agile software development project. The primary contribution of this research is the simulation model of agile software development that can be used a tool to examine the impact of agile practices and management policies on critical project variables including project scope, schedule, and cost. This research provides a mechanism to study agile development as a dynamic system of practices rather than using a static view and in isolation. The results from this study are expected to be of significant interest to practitioners of agile methods by providing them a simulation environment to examine the impact of their practices, procedures and management policies.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study about the difficulties managing software assets within larger organizations.Software Asset Management (SAM) is a fairly new practice which has started to be used byorganizations in order to track and manage software assets throughout their life cycle. Existingliterature states that organizations have challenges with the increasing complexity, which comesalong when buying software products from manufacturers. However, the lack of academicresearch, due to the rapid development of technology has been limited. The purpose of this paperis to explore the challenges that large organizations are confronted with when managing softwareassets. A mixed study approach was conducted with main focus on a qualitative approach, where five persons with mainly long experience in Software Asset Management, whereinterviewed. In addition, a survey was sent out to employees who work with IT, to capture ageneral aspect on the topic. The findings of the study include the identified challenges of SAM,which are divided in four main areas. Further, the paper highlights the importance and success ofSoftware Asset Management.

Lindström, Birgitta. "Methods for Increasing Software Testability." Thesis, University of Skövde, Department of Computer Science, 2000. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-494.

Full text
Abstract:

We present a survey over current methods for improving software testability. It is a well-known fact that the cost for testing of software takes 50\% or more of the development costs. Hence, methods to improve testability, i.e. reduce the effort required for testing, have a potential to decrease the development costs. The test effort needed to reach a level of sufficient confidence for the system is dependent on the number of possible test cases, i.e., the number of possible combinations of system state and event sequences. Each such combination results in an execution order. Properties of the execution environment that affect the number of possible execution orders can therefore also affect testability. Which execution orders that are possible and not are dependent of processor scheduling and concurrency control policies. Current methods for improving testability are investigated and their properties with respect to processor scheduling and concurrency control analyzed. Especially, their impact on the number of possible test cases is discussed. The survey revealed that (i) there are few methods which explicitly address testability, and (ii) methods that concern the execution environment suggest a time-triggered design. It is previously shown that the effort to test an event-triggered real-time system is inherently higher than testing a time-triggered real-time system. Due to the dynamic nature of the event-triggered system the number of possible execution orders is high. A time-triggered design is, however, not always suitable. The survey reveals an open research area for methods concerning improvement of testability in event-triggered systems. Moreover, a survey and analysis of processor scheduling and concurrency control properties and their effect on testability is presented. Methods are classified into different categories that are shown to separate software into different levels of testability. These categories can form a basis of taxonomy for testability. Such taxonomy has a potential to be used by system designers and enable them to perform informed trade-off decisions.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates information systems development with special regard to the area of Geographical Information Systems. It addresses the area through the investigation of the software life-cycle development model and its augmentation by the use of prototyping. Observations are made on empirical experiments conducted to assess the usefulness of the new techniques of hypertext and hypermedia and their suitability within this field of study. This investigation is complemented by a case study, the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Authority. The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads are designated by statute with similar status to the National Parks of Great Britain, and are managed by the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Authority. Through cooperation with the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Authority, a prototype information system was created. This system makes use of geographical data from the Broads Authority. The development stages of this system were used to conduct experiments for this thesis. The tools and techniques used for the development of this system are described. These include a hypertext tool called FIELD (Fully Integrated Environment for Layered Development) which has been especially designed for the complete storage of all information for each stage throughout this development. The use of this tool and hypertext for the development of the geographically based information system for the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Authority are discussed.
