Abstract:
Various trends can be seen to characterise the 'new' economy, including globalisation, networking, competition, ICTs and transformations in forms of work organisation. Notably, it is claimed that these trends may encourage self-management, peer pressure, the expansion of workloads and greater expenditure of work effort, with implications for experiences of work intensity (Bittman et al, 2009; O'Riain, 2006; Green, 2006, 2004, 2001; Thompson and McHugh, 2002; Findlay et al, 2000; Springer, 1999; Tomaney, 1990). This thesis aims to explore whether software professionals are necessarily immune from experiences of work intensity, due to their positioning as archetypal knowledge workers (Baldry et al, 2007, 2005; Newell et al, 2002; Alvesson, 1995; Kunda, 1992) and their role in creating a technology which has applicability to virtually all work, business and social situations (Scotland IS: Innovation and Skills in Scotland, 2008; Freeman and Perez, 1998; Quintas, 1994). This thesis has utilised a contextually-based, qualitative, in-depth comparative case study approach, in order to identify and explain the linkages, mechanisms and relationships which influence and shape software professionals' experiences of work intensity. This thesis makes an original contribution through identifying that professional software workers are subject to work intensity from diverse sources. Notably, advances in ICTs, globalisation, flexibility and developments in the software industry have had implications for software professionals' experiences of work intensity. Contextual elements, such as market dynamics, firm characteristics and internal organisational factors influence experiences of work intensity. In addition, aspects of the software labour process, including deadlines, project team structures, specialist knowledge, interruptions, normative control, breaks and worker agency, have implications for software professionals' experiences of work intensity. Finally, the development of a taxonomy of professional software job roles and the utilisation of the work diary study within this PhD have provided comprehensive insight into the tasks and activities performed by individuals.

"Reliability of a Commercially Available and Algorithm-Based Kinetic Analysis Software Compared to Manual-Based Software." Abstract:
There is a need for reliable analysis techniques for kinetic data for coaches and sport scientists who employ athlete monitoring practices. The purpose of the study was: (1) to determine intra- and inter-rater reliability within a manual-based kinetic analysis program; and (2) to determine test-retest reliability of an algorithm-based kinetic analysis program. Five independent raters used a manual analysis program to analyse 100 isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) trials obtained from previously collected data. Each trial was analysed three times. The same IMTP trials were analysed using an algorithm-based analysis software. Variables measured were peak force, rate of force development from 0 to 50 ms (RFD50) and RFD from 0 to 200 ms (RFD200). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV) were used to assess intra- and inter-rater reliability. Nearly perfect reliability was observed for the manual-based (ICC > 0.92). However, poor intra- and inter-rater CV was observed for RFD (CV > 16.25% and CV > 32.27%, respectively). The algorithm-based method resulted in perfect reliability in all measurements (ICC = 1.0, CV = 0%). While manual methods of kinetic analysis may provide sufficient reliability, the perfect reliability observed within the algorithm-based method in the current study suggest it is a superior method for use in athlete monitoring programs.

Abstract:
Software engineering often requires a team arrangement because of the size and scope of modern projects. Several team structures have been defined and used, but these structures generally define only the tasks and jobs required for the team. Various process and product metrics seek to improve quality, even though it is generally agreed that the greatest potential benefit lies in people issues. This study uses a team-based personality profiling tool, the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory, to explore the characteristics offered by the Company Worker, one of the team roles defined by Belbin.<br>Master of Science

Ketenci, Ahmet. "Development Of A Grid-aware Master Worker Framework For Artificial Evolution." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612881/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Genetic Algorithm (GA) has become a very popular tool for various kinds of problems, including optimization problems with wider search spaces. Grid search techniques are usually not feasible or ineffective at finding a solution, which is good enough. The most computationally intensive component of GA is the calculation of the goodness (fitness) of candidate solutions. However, since the fitness calculation of each individual does not depend each other, this process can be parallelized easily. The easiest way to reach high amounts of computational power is using grid. Grids are composed of multiple clusters, thus they can offer much more resources than a single cluster. On the other hand, grid may not be the easiest environment to develop parallel programs, because of the lack of tools or libraries that can be used for communication among the processes. In this work, we introduce a new framework, GridAE, for GA applications. GridAE uses the master worker model for parallelization and offers a GA library to users. It also abstracts the message passing process from users. Moreover, it has both command line interface and web interface for job management. These properties makes the framework more usable for developers even with limited parallel programming or grid computing experience. The performance of GridAE is tested with a shape optimization problem and results show that the framework is more convenient to problems with crowded populations.

Song, Yulun. "An authoring and presentation environment for interactive worked examples." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6152/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes an authoring environment, called IWE, which allows a teacher to develop computer-based interactive worked examples without bespoke programming. The focus is on worked examples that involve transforming one representation into another using judgments not algorithms or rules. The worked examples created are all drawn from Computing Science; for example, transforming a requirements specification into an entity-relationship diagram. Teachers model the problem-solving process as a sequence of steps demonstrating how the problem is translated step-by-step into a solution, explaining the decision-making in each step. They can incorporate questions within the examples to increase student engagement and encourage students to do active thinking. Students interact with the transformation process at their own pace to obtain experience of problem-solving. Teachers are able to evolve the examples based on feedback from students and usage data from the system. A review of educational literature identified the best practice guidelines for designing and presenting effective worked examples for novices and faded worked examples for intermediate learners. These guidelines informed the essential requirements of IWE. A prototype authoring environment was designed, implemented and evaluated. Educational literature also recommends using worked examples combined with practice of problem solving. A field study was conducted applying these recommendations to evaluate the usability of IWE. Evaluations were carried out with teachers to assess their ability to create and modify interactive worked examples while the teaching of their courses was in progress. Evaluations were also carried out with students to assess the usability of IWE. The main conclusion of this research, based on analysis of the evaluations, is that the prototype of IWE is useable by both teachers and students. It allows teachers to create interactive worked examples following best practice and evolve existing examples on the basis of feedback. It allows students to use interactive worked examples independently following best practice. Finally, the dissertation identifies some possibilities for widening the scope of this research.

Yakin, Cenkler. "Quantifying Risk Management Process In A Software Organization." Master's thesis, METU, 2006. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12607138/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents a quantifying risk management process and its application on a software organization in terms of risk items mitigated, exposures covered, costs, and expected exposures covered. Risk management is defined as setting forth a discipline and environment of proactive decisions and actions to assess continuously what can go wrong (risks), to determine what risks are important to deal with, and to implement strategies to deal with those risks. Risk management can be applied in all of the business areas. In the literature, there are sources for risk management. Some of them are qualitative, and some of them are quantitative. However, there is no much source about the application study of a quantifying risk management process on a software organization. In order to obtain insight about this issue, this study presents a quantifying risk management system to the literature and also compares the quantifying risk management policies on the data set of a software organization by finding out and analyzing their performance with respect to designated decision parameters and preference profiles for risk items mitigated, exposures covered, costs, and expected exposures covered. At the end of this study, suitable quantifying risk management policies for each profile are recommended by considering the analysis of the data set as base.

Full text
Abstract:
Turkish software companies are facing massive challenges to survive in today&rsquo<br>s global and volatile marketplace. Strategic planning, performance measurement and control systems have recently become crucial in overcoming these challenges. Strategic planning simply stands for defining the moves to achieve vision. Environmental and internal assessments are activities which must be conducted prior to defining successful strategies. In this study broad environmental and internal assessments are conducted in an organized manner by using tools and techniques in the literature. Then strategies are identified with suitable techniques. In order to translate the strategy into action and measure the performance the Balanced Scorecard technique is used. Balanced Scorecard is a relatively new approach to strategic management which has been gaining significant importance in academic and industrial communities. Although Balanced Scorecard is a significant strategic management tool, its application is a challenging and demanding issue. In this study we used a methodological approach for putting Balanced Scorecard into action. We believe that this study will present a useful method to small and medium sized software companies for Strategic planning and Balanced Scorecard studies.

Although for defect prediction there have been conducted a lot of studies, process enactment data cannot be used because of the difficulty of collection. Additionally, there is no proposed approach known in general for the analysis of process enactment data in software engineering. In this study, we developed a method to show the applicability of process enactment data for defect prediction and answered &ldquo<br>Is process enactment data beneficial for defect prediction?&rdquo<br>, &ldquo<br>How can we use process enactment data?&rdquo<br>and &ldquo<br>Which approaches and analysis methods can our method support?&rdquo<br>questions. We used multiple case study design and conducted case studies including with and without process enactment data in a small software development company. We preferred machine learning approaches rather than statistical ones, in order to cluster the data which includes process enactment informationsince we believed that they are convenient with the pattern oriented nature of the data. By the case studies performed, we obtained promising results. We evaluated performance values of prediction models to demonstrate the advantage of using process enactment data for the prediction of defect open duration value. When we have enough data points to apply machine learning methods and the data can be clusteredhomogeneously, we observed approximately 3% (ranging from -10% to %17) more accurate results from analyses including with process enactment data than the without ones. Abstract:
Resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) has been subject of extensive research in project management literature as RCPSP is one of the most challenging problems in the project management and is of great practical importance. In this thesis, resource allocation capabilities of Primavera Enterprise V.6.0-Project Management (P6) and MS Project 2007 (MS) were evaluated for solving overallocated problems in the RCPSP. Fourty-five resource overallocated instance projects were selected from the PSPLIB to evaluate performance of P6 and MS Project 2007. Three resource allocation priority rules of P6 and two resource allocation priority rules of MS were used for comparision. The best solutions of different priority rules for P6 and MS were compared by using t-test. Results of the P6 and MS were compared with the lower bounds and optimum solutions of the previous heuristic methods. The comparisions indicate that both P6 and MS has limited capabilities for solving overallocated problems in RCPSP. Especially for larger projects the widely used project management software packages can not provide optimum or near optimum solutions.

Abstract:
An evaluation of thesis reports performed by students from the degree programme Computer Engineering, TIDAB, that was made by UKÄ, The Swedish Higher Education Authority, showed that there was a lack of consideration of environmental and sustainability aspects in the thesis reports, leading to many students not meeting the criteria in the degree objectives regarding this aspect. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to improve students’ ability in considering the important aspects of sustainability in their thesis works, by providing them with guidelines which they can follow and implement during their thesis work that will enable them to reach the level ‘Very High Quality’. A literature study was performed thoroughly in conjunction with reviewing previous thesis reports and conducting expert interviews as an approach to find a solution to the problem. The outcome of the analysis was three methods that was developed, which the students can use as guidelines in their thesis work. A set of guidelines, a table with skill sets and the SEMAT Essence Kernel card for sustainable development was the resulting methods that will help the students to at minimum accomplish the criteria for ‘High Quality’ on the objective "Demonstrate an understanding of technology capabilities and limitations, its role in society and people’s responsibility for its use, including social and economic aspects, environmental and safety aspects" when the methods are followed.<br>En utvärdering av examensarbeten utförda av studenter från utbildningsprogrammet Datateknik, TIDAB, gjort av UKÄ, Universitetskanslersämbetet, visade att det fanns en brist på hänsynstagande till miljö- och hållbarhetsaspekter i rapporterna, vilket ledde till att flera studenter inte uppfyllde kriterierna i examensmålen gällande denna aspekt.

Abstract:
[...]<br>The massive deployment of connected objects, forming the Internet of Things (IoT), is now disrupting traditional network environments. These objects, previously connectivity-free, are now likely to introduce additional vulnerabilities into the environments that integrate them. The literature today paints an unflattering picture of the security of these objects, which are increasingly becoming prime targets for attackers who see them as new exploitable surfaces to penetrate previously secure environments. In addition, the wireless means of communication used by these objects are numerous, with very heterogeneous characteristics at all protocol levels. Particularly in terms of the frequencies used, which make it difficult to analyse and monitor the environments that are equipped with them. These issues, and in particular the strong heterogeneity of these numerous protocols, call into question the traditional solutions used to ensure the security of the exchanges carried out. However, the explosion in the number of these objects requires security architectures that are adapted to these new issues. In this thesis, we are interested in monitoring and detecting anomalies that may occur in any wireless means of communication used in the IoT. We found a critical lack of solutions with the ability to analyze all exchanges, regardless of the protocol used. To answer this question, we propose a new security architecture based on the monitoring of physical radio signals, making it possible to free oneself from protocol knowledge and therefore to be generic. Its objective is to learn the model of legitimate radio behaviour in an environment using radio probes, then to identify deviations from this model, which may correspond to anomalies or attacks. The description of this architecture is the first contribution of this thesis. We then studied the applicability of our solution in different contexts, each with its own characteristics. The first study, corresponding to our second contribution, consists in proposing an implementation and deployment of our approach in connected homes. The evaluation of the latter in the face of real attacks injected into radio space and its results show the relevance of our approach in these environments. Finally, the last contribution studies the adaptation and deployment of our generic solution to professional environments where the presence of expert users promotes the integration of advanced diagnostic information to identify the origins of an anomaly. The subsequent evaluation and the results associated with each of the diagnostic mechanisms implemented demonstrate the value of our approach in heterogeneous environments

Abstract:
碩士<br>東海大學<br>公共事務碩士學程在職進修專班<br>93<br>Due to the wave of open source software over the world, governments and enterprises in recent years are more inclined than ever to adopt free software considering software cost reduction. Relevant policies have been discussed and schemed in many countries. Nowadays, most public agencies in Taiwan utilize MS Windows as the operating system of personal computers. To explore the issues which the civil service workers may confront for employing free software, the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission of Executive Yuan selected three town offices from the northern, central and southern divisions in a test program, which also attempted to propagate the application of free software to all aspects of public affairs in the town offices. This research, based on the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior, modeled the relevant factors which influence the utilization decisions of free software in the public agencies. Data collection was conducted by a questionnaire and individual interviews with the civil servants in the three town offices that take part in the test program. It was intended to understand their attitude, willingness and behavior for adopting free software. This study also attempted to discover their comments and suggestions about the utilizations of the free software in public agencies. The research results may be summarized below: 1.The experience of the town office workers taking use of the free software is not all the same as that of the usual user of information technology behaviors. 2.The town office workers that have received the training program are seldom using free software now. 3.The important factors that influence the civil servants’ intention for using free software include “system stability and security,” “government policy influence,” “superior and peer influence,” and “training.” 4.The trained town office workers share the opinions that the distinction between free software and MS windows system is not significant. 5.The practical suggestions for promoting the utilization of free software include simultaneous installation of both MS IE and Mozilla Firefox (the free software browser similar to the MS IE) on the Windows system. The study also provides following suggestions: 1.The potential users may be recommended to get acquainted with free software incrementally. 2.The web-based application system is worth investing for promoting free software. 3.Free software will benefit from integration of the various technical support resources. 4.Various training programs are essential for promoting free software. 5.The supervisors in public agencies should be targeted as key players.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>資訊管理研究所<br>96<br>The core self-evaluation is both a personality trait and a basic estimate that each individual holds towards each oneself. Core self-evaluation consists of self-esteem, general self-efficacy, neuroticism, and locus of control. Present study has shown that the core self- evaluation is related to work performance and work satisfaction(Judge, 2001), and that world contrastive cognitive psychology researches also demonstrate the Chinese have bad performance in four constructs. Therefore, this research aims to improve the work efficiency and the work satisfaction of IT professionals through the aspect of core self-evaluation. Based on core self-evaluation, this study explains the differences among software entrepreneurs, MIS managers, MIS professionals, top managers, MIS graduates, and MIS students, including postgraduates, university students and vocational students, in respects of locus of control, general self-efficacy, self-esteem, neuroticism, work performance and work satisfaction. The relationship among core self-evaluation, job and life satisfaction of MIS professionals is analyzed as well. The goal of this research is to explore the value of core self-evaluation and its significance toward the area of MIS. The results indicate that Software entrepreneurs and top managers have internal locus of control, high self-esteem, stable emotions, high job self-efficacy, high job satisfaction and high life satisfaction. Meanwhile, MIS managers and MIS professionals perform worse than their counterparts—software entrepreneurs and top managers. By contrast, the overall performances of MIS students, referring to postgraduates, university students, and vocational students, are the lowest, with external locus of control, low self-esteem and unstable emotions. As a result, core self-evaluation positively influences job satisfaction and life satisfaction. This research, core self-evaluation, has contributed integrated benefits to IT professionals both in their Job Satisfaction and Life Satisfaction. One the one hand, it academically facilitates to investigate the core self-evaluation performance of IT professionals in Taiwan. On the other hand, enterprises practically choose MIS managers not only consider their professional abilities but also value the core self-evaluation of personnel. In addition, enterprise''s education and training should be designed with courses about core self-evaluation to improve positive benefits of staff and organization concerning their works and lives.

Gangatharan, C. "Knowledge Integration Mechanisms, Organizational Capabilities, and Factors of Knowledge Worker Productivity : A Selective Study of Indian Software Firms." Thesis, 2015. http://etd.iisc.ernet.in/2005/3948.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of knowledge in organizations has been steadily growing. Traditional economies focused on land, labour, and capital as their main production factors, and saw knowledge as external to the economic process. Over the last few decades, economists have started discussing the role of knowledge and technology in economic growth. The Resource-Based View of the firm explains the contribution of resources and capabilities of the firm to accomplish sustainable competitive advantage. As an extension of this view, the Knowledge-Based View of the firm suggests that knowledge is the basic economic resource, which explains an organization's sustainable competitive advantage. This view argues that in the knowledge-based economy, management of productivity of the knowledge-worker is the crucial challenge for growth and development. Organizational Capabilities are important for enhancing the competitive advantage and performance of the firms. However, the relationship between Organizational Capabilities and Knowledge-Worker Productivity have not previously been empirically examined. The current research, through Knowledge-Based View of the firm, examines the issue of effective knowledge integration from the perspective of Organizational Capabilities. This perspective suggests that effective knowledge integration improves the capabilities of an organization, which enhances the factors influencing the productivity of the knowledge-worker. Knowledge Integration Mechanisms were studied using four variables: Rules and Directives, Sequencing, Routines, and Group Problem-Solving. All these four variables were hypothesized to positively influence the three forms of Organizational Capabilities, namely Local Capability, Architectural Capability, and Process Capability. Then, the effect of these Capabilities on the Factors of Knowledge-Worker Productivity was examined. These factors were identified as Task Clarity, Autonomy, Innovation, Learning, Quality, and Value Addition. Through analysis of surveys collected from over three hundred knowledge professionals, this research empirically models and uncovers key aspects of these constructs. The results provide a basis for understanding the knowledge-based theory of the firm, which postulates that knowledge integration is the primary role of the firm. The data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. This method was chosen because it allows the analysis of all the relationships simultaneously. From the analysis of data collected, results of this research suggests that Process Capability has got maximum influence on the Factors of Knowledge-Worker Productivity; and Group Problem-Solving, as a Knowledge Integration Mechanisms, was found to be most significant in the development of Organizational Capabilities. These results conform to those reported in the literature, that is improved Factors of Knowledge-Worker Productivity is dependent on Organizational Capabilities, which are enhanced by effective Knowledge Integration Mechanisms. Overall, this thesis expands the Knowledge-Based View of the firm by integrating the above mentioned three constructs. This integrated view provides insights on the significance of knowledge integration and illustrates how firms develop a set of capabilities that can improve the Factors of Knowledge-Worker Productivity. The findings from this research can be used to develop sound strategies for effective leverage of Knowledge Management, ensuring organizational development.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立新竹教育大學<br>人資處美勞教學碩士班<br>100<br>Abstract Action Research on the Influence to the sculpture works of the Fifth Grade Elementary Students after learning 3D Modeling Software ─ Case of the Sculptris This research is aimed to explore the feasibility of Sculptris(3D modeling software), which is applied to sculpture art teaching in the fifth grade elementary class and the influence to the students after learning the software. By following the process of “overall plan-action-reflection-revision” of an action research, the objectives of study include: (1)exploring the feasible courses and appropriate teaching approaches of “Sculptris”.(2)exploring the influence of Sculptris to the sculpture works of the fifth grade elementary students.(3)evaluating on the feasibility of using “Sculptris” in teaching, and providing some suggestions for future studies and teaching activities. This research,by using “Sculptris”,attempted to combine “sculpture”with “digital technology” and then analysed the differences of students sculpture works, which are presented after learning “Sculptris”and before using it. The following are the findings of this study: 1.Students have much interests in learning sculpture by digitaling study pattern. 2.Sculptris provides a series of sculpture effect , and it can stimulate the change of students’ sculpture shapes. 3.Teachers can teach students by combining digital learning in the Arts and Humanities curriculum, and students can experience the enjoyment of carving and forming. 4.Appropriate teaching approaches of digital sculpture courses could take advantage of pictures, videos, and network resource to make students understand and use the software much better, especially through video-teaching activities. 5.Digital sculpture courses can make use of cooperative learning to improve learning achievement. 6.The fifth grade elementary students can oprate”Sculptris” by themselves and design the digitals works; although there could be difficulties during the process, they would improve students’ interest and inspiration of sculpture creation. 7.After taking digital sculpture courses, student made great progress in the uniqueness, the dimension, the aesthetic performance and the intention performance, especially in the part of dimension. 8. Sculptris is good for not only student’s learning movement but also for teacher’s teaching activities , besides, during the process of learning, students could display creativity and get the sense of achievement. Therefore, it’s feasible in teaching activities. Finally, based on results of this study, the researcher gave recommendations for the implementation of such curriculum as well as related studies in the future.
