Cycling of nutrients, such as Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N), is one of the most important soil functions and is strongly related to the composition of the soil microbial community. However, soil is increasingly under environmental pressures that threaten its ecological functions and sustainability. To maintain soil functional sustainability, it is important to understand how soil withstands environmental stresses (subsequently referred to as resistance) and recovers from stresses (subsequently referred to as resilience). This study focused on the resistance and resilience of C and N processes an

As Charles Darwin first noted in 1881, earthworms through their burrowing and casting activities, play an important role in the creation and maintenance of soil structure. Burrowing activity leads to the reorganisation of voids and creation of macropores within the soil. This has implications for aeration and the flow properties of water through soils. Casting activity affects the structural stability of soil through the stabilisation of aggregates. The overall aim of this research project has been to investigate the effects of earthworm activity and diversity on void space and aggregation in

The importance of soil structure for terrestrial ecosystems is well known. A large bulk of scientific literature addresses factors influencing soil structure and soil pore development, but little is still known concerning the underlying physical mechanisms of their action. The aim of this thesis was to investigate mechanisms of soil pore development by means an experimental approach using soil 2D image analysis and standard soil micromorphology. In this work the chapters are organized as collection of scientific papers. After the first introductory chapter, the second one investigates some pro

This master thesis is based on the soil micromorphological study of the sedimentary samples from Anta 1 de Vale da Laje site, located in Tomar, Portugal. The site of Anta 1 de Vale da Laje is one of the sites currently under study within the research framework of the projects Landscape occupation strategies during the Holocene in the Middle Tagus (Es.Ter.Tejo) and Moving tasks across shapes: the agro-pastoralists spread from and into the Alto Ribatejo (MTAS). Asides the stratigraphic problems of the site, it remained unclear the modification successions in time, of the monument and the process

103
In this study, titania-silica composite films were deposited on Ti6Al4V and 6 wt.% cobalt-contained cemented tungsten carbide substrate by sol-gel dip coating technique. The compositions of the composite films were changes by adjusting the Ti/Si ratios of the precursor solutions and, then sintered at 300 ℃ under an argon gas atmosphere (99.99 % oxygen-containing 9 ppm). After the coating of the titania-silica composite film, an outmost diamond-like carbon (DLC) film was deposited by using a radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system.
