Abstract:
A field experiment was conducted to investigate the feasibility of making one measurement of soil moisture tension/content or crop water stress index (CWSI), and from it determine when and how much to irrigate. Cotton (Gossvpium hirsutum C.V. DPL-90) was planted in a sandy loam soil prepared with an underground drip irrigation system. Measurements of soil moisture tension, soil moisture content, plant temperature, and wet- and dry-bulb temperatures were made. The results indicate that soil moisture tension above 0.30 m and soil moisture content above 0.50 m in the root zone can be used as good

The need for water conservation continues to increase as global freshwater resources dwindle. In response, many golf course superintendents are implementing new methods and tools to become more frugal with their water applications. For example, scheduling irrigation using time-domain reflectometer (TDR) soil moisture sensors can decrease water usage. Still, TDR measurements are time-consuming and only cover small scales, leading to many locations being unsampled. Remotely sensed data such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) offer the potential of estimating moisture stress acr

Abstract:
Drought indices based on monthly precipitation and sometimes temperature are widely used due to their simple calculation with readily available climate data. The portrayal of drought through simple precipitation anomalies or water balances when accounting for temperature may not capture the potentially complex evolution of drought events due to the timing, intensity, and frequency of precipitation events at the daily scale. In this study, we present a new drought index that incorporates a deterministic soil model, HYDRUS-1D, and daily climate data to assess how representative simple drought i

The application of the crop water stress index (CWSI) method to irrigation scheduling is enhanced by knowledge of the relationship between CWSI and soil water potential (SWP) and how this relationship is affected by soil texture. Detailed data were collected of CWSI and soil moisture content for several treatments that scheduled irrigations at threshold CWSI values. The expected increase in precipitation and temperature in Scandinavia, and especially short-time heavy precipitation, will increase the frequency of flooding. Urban areas are the most vulnerable, and specifically, the road infrastructure. The accumulation of large volumes of water and sediments on road-stream intersections gets severe consequences for the road drainage structures. The need for a tool to identify characteristics that impacts the occurrence of flooding, and to predict future event is thus essential. Where timber production is the primary management objective, knowledge of the relationship between the potential productivity of candidate tree species and levels of light, heat, nutrient, moisture and aeration is necessary for species- and site-specific decision making. Similarily, when considering the application of silvicultural treatments such as spacing or fertilizing, foresters need to determine whether the potential productivity of a particul

Soil moisture can be a determining factor in hydrological processes. However, the monitoring of soil water content is difficult to perform because of its spatio-temporal variability and because field measurements are expensive and time-consuming. Thus, the use of the Tank Model and also a moisture index derived from this model can be very useful in hydrological studies and in the management of natural disasters. In addition, the evaluation of this index in a distributed form in the river basin allows a more detailed analysis of the water content of the soil, considering its spatial variability
