The reliability and accuracy of several sensors that employ the relationship between dielectric constant and soil moisture constant, e, in particular capacitance sensors were investigated. Results obtained from laboratory examinations ,of a Theta probe, TP, selected as a representative model for capacitance sensors, suggested that the sensor output was affected by temperature variations, electrical conductivity levels, spatial variation in sample bulk density as well as the level of compaction of the soil surrounding the sensor's rods. Horticultural producers are in need of efficient and timely techniques for determining crop water requirements. The question of when and how much to irrigate, termed irrigation scheduling, is particularly important for high-value crops such as strawberries (Fragaria ananassa). During the growing season, irrigation scheduling decisions are influenced by climatic variables such as rainfall, temperature and humidity, which directly impact soil moisture levels. A field study was therefore conducted to evaluate two soil moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling of commercial stra

Spaceborne microwave sensors are capable of estimating various properties of many geophysical phenomena, including the age and extent of Arctic sea ice and the relative soil moisture over land. The measurement and classification of such geophysical phenomena are used to refine climate models, localize and predict drought, and better understand the water cycle. Data from the active Ku-band scatterometers, the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT), and the Oceansat-2 Scatterometer (OSCAT), are here used to classify areas of first-year and multiyear Arctic sea ice using a temporally adaptive threshold

A specific design of the stainless planar electrodes and the sensing material utilizing soils are optimized. As rain falls on ground soil, its water content increases together with that of the soil in the sensor at the same ground level. This variation of water content causes a change in th

According to the calibration results, two regression equations were obtained between the soil moisture tension and the voltage of Watermark sensor. These equations were represented by three degree polynomial equation and Logis equation, respectively. In additional, these equations were accurately used to express the soil moisture tension in field test. The experiment results showe

Microwave remote sensing of the land surface processes has advantages over optical remote sensing such as least attenuation due to the atmosphere, and high temporal resolution among others. Soil moisture is an important land surface variable, which is present at land atmosphere interphase and influences the hydrologic, atmospheric, climate, agricultural, and carbon cycles. Given the challenges involved in measuring the soil moisture at local scale (heterogeneous nature of the soil, financial constraints etc.), microwave remote sensing has assisted the researchers in obtaining the soil moistur

Wilting during shelf life is a major cause of postharvest shrink for bedding plants shipped long distances from production greenhouses to retail outlets. The objective of this research was to determine if irrigation at lower, constant substrate moisture content (SMC) during greenhouse production would be a feasible way to acclimate plants for reduced shrinkage during shelf life, while potentially conserving irrigation water. Rooted plugs of Angelonia angustifolia 'Angelface Blue' were grown in greenhouse production until a marketable stage in substrates irrigated at SMC levels of 10, 20,
