The incorporation of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) into sol-gel derived matrices presents both novel applications as well as a robust platform in which to investigate the nonlinear optical properties of NCs. This thesis summarizes our present understanding of the chemistry of the incorporation process and the applications and underlying optical physics that was gleaned from studying these NC-doped sol-gel structures. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of NC-doped core-shell silica microsphere composites of tunable size and emission wavelength, as well as their subsequent use for in-vivo imaging of blood vessels. This chapter illustrates how an appreciation of the kinetics of the Stober process allowed for the achievement of highly monodisperse microsphere composites with a uniform incorporation of NCs. Chapter 3 reviews the requirements for achieving stimulated emission in CdSe NCs and details the development of NC-based lasers through sol-gel derived microcavities, from distributed feedback (DFB) grating structures to spherical microresonators exhibiting whispering-gallery mode lasing. Chapter 4 compares and explicates the differences between silica and titania as host matrices for NCs in terms of their chemical stability in the presence of solvents.
(cont.) This chapter explores the possibility of integrating NC-based microcavity lasers with microfluidic networks, thus providing the potential to dynamically tune the optical properties of the laser through interaction with different solvent environments on a miniaturized scale. Extension of the spectral window of NC-based gain media is discussed in Chapter 5, where extremely fast non-radiative Auger relaxation processes encountered in blue-emitting CdSe NCs may be circumvented by employing an alternative semiconductor NC, CdS/ZnS. Through judicious chemistry CdS/ZnS NCs may be uniformly incorporated into a sol-gel derived microcavity to provide room temperature lasing at blue wavelengths. Finally, our investigation into the optical physics of NCs in sol-gel derived microcavities is summarized in Chapter 6, which describes our observation of stimulated emission from multiexcitonic states in CdSe/ZnS NCs incorporated into a titania matrix. We employ transient photoluminescence to optically characterize the emission from these multiexcitonic states, which we attribute to 1P3/2-1Pc transitions. A DFB structure is introduced onto the CdSe/ZnS-titania composite to facilitate simultaneous lasing at two distinct wavelengths.

Full textThe State of Rio Grande do Sul is responsible for 90% of the national production of grapes, mainly for the elaboration of fine wines. The municipality of Encruzilhada do Sul presents ideal edafoclimatic potential for the production of grapes that supply large wineries in the Serra Gaúcha. However the indiscriminate use of the soil can result in a degradation of the soil. This work was divided into three studies, which aimed to identify the soil classes occurring in the vineyard, according to the morphological description and analysis of the chemical and physical attributes of the superficial and subsurface horizons; To evaluate the effect of the management on the chemical quality of the soil of a commercial vineyard in areas with 4, 9 and 16 years of management after planting Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot Noir for the preparation of sparkling wines; To evaluate the effect of the traffic of agricultural machines on the physical quality of the soil of a commercial vineyard with different years of driving after planting the seedlings. Analyzes of profiles of 8 trenches were carried out in the field and with laboratory analyzes. The study of soil chemical and physical attributes used as soil quality indicators was carried out to evaluate the effect of vineyard management at 4, 9 and 16 years of age after planting the seedlings. For the analysis of soil chemical quality, undisturbed soil samples were collected at depths of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50 and 50-60 cm in three replicates. The physical attributes of the soil were analyzed in the same areas and depths, which were collected in the traffic site of the wheel tracks of the tractor (WT), between the wheel tracks (BWT), and in the area under the line projection of the canopy (CLP). 80% of the property consists of diversified Argissolos, in addition to Cambisols, these are ideal for vine growing. In addition to these soils, the presence of Gleissolo was identified in the property, which are not recommended for cultivation due to its hydromorphic character. A reduction in soil acidity and an increase in fertility can be observed due to the vineyard's cultivation history. For the analysis of soil physical quality indicators, soil samples were collected at the same depths, at three sites in the interline: between rounds, rounds and planting line. The area with 16 years of driving after planting showed a greater effect of the use of machines in the vineyard, especially in the traffic position of tractor wheels, seriously affecting the physical quality due to compaction and low infiltration of water in the soil.

Full textThere exists a considerable level of spatial variability in soil physical and chemical properties within the research block; and the soils are generally shallow. Of all the measured parameters, electrical conductivity, Bray-1 P, exchangeable potassium, calcium and sodium as well as extractable iron and zinc showed a huge percent of variation across the field. Soil variability maps indicated the degree of variability within the research block. The spatial variability of the characterized parameters was significant across the research block. A correlation study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the measured soil physical and chemical properties. Regular soil analyses should be conducted to avoid failure/delay of experiments. It is recommended that inputs such as irrigation and fertilizer application must be varied based on varying soil conditions across the research block.

Full textKnowledge of colloid mobility is important for understanding nutrient cycling, the transport of some contaminants, and for developing environmental remediation systems such as geologic filters. The interaction forces between colloids and soil materials are central to colloid transport and immobilization. These forces act at the microscale (nanometers to microns) and include: fluid drag (friction), Brownian motion, gravity and buoyancy, and fluid chemical forces (including DLVO and van der Waals mechanisms). Most vadose zone studies, however, consider colloids at the continuum scale in terms of solute transport mechanisms using parametrized forms of the advection-dispersion equation and absorption isotherms. A comprehensive, generally applicable, well-documented and publicly available framework for simulating colloids at the microscale is still lacking.
Colloid transport and mobility are mechanisms that fundamentally occur at the microscale. As such, representation of the pore-structure needs to be obtained that is meaningful for the pore-scale fluid flow field and colloid mobility (pore-scale colloidal force balances cause the colloidal transport field to be different from the fluid flow field). At the same time, the pore-structure needs to be relevant for continuum-scale experiments or simulations. There are two ways by which a pore-structure can be obtained: by direct three-dimensional imaging (typically with x-ray tomographic techniques) or by reconstruction techniques that yield a synthetic, but presumably representative, pore-structure. Both techniques are examined in this dissertation, but the synthetic route must be used if little micro-scale information is available.
This dissertation addresses three main objectives. In chapter 2 it addresses the relation between image quality obtained with two different x-ray tomography techniques (a synchrotron and an industrial scanner) and the obtained flow field. Chapter 3 discusses the development of the LB-Colloids software package, while chapter 4 applies the code to data obtained from a breakthrough experiment of nanoparticulate TiO2.
In chapter 2, pore-scale flow fields for Berea sand stone and a macropore soil sample were obtained with lattice Boltzmann simulations which were volume-averaged to a sample-scale permeability and verified with an observed sample-scale permeability. In addition, the lattice Boltzmann simulations were verified with a Kozeny-Carman equation. Results indicate that the simulated flow field strongly depends on the quality of the x-ray tomographic imagery and the segmentation algorithm used to convert gray-scale tomography data into binary pore-structures. More complex or advanced segmentation algorithms do not necessarily produce better segmentations when dealing with ambiguous imagery. It was found that the KC equation provided a reliable initial assessment of error when predicting permeability and can be used as a quick evaluation of whether simulations of the micro-scale flow field should be pursued. In the context of this study, this chapter indicated that LB is able to generate relevant pore-scale flow fields that represent sample-scale permeabilities. However, because the remainder of the study was focused on the development of a pore-scale colloid mobility framework we decided to focus primarily on synthetically-generated pore-structures. This also allowed us to focus on actual mechanisms that were free of imaging and segmentation artifacts.
Chapter 3 discusses the development of the LB-Colloids package. This simulation framework is able to simulate large collections of individual colloids through pore representations and porous media. The general workflow for users is as follows: 1) Obtain a pore structure by tomographic imaging or by synthetic means. The latter can be accomplished though the included PSPHERE module which is able to generate a random porous medium using user-supplied porosity and particle size. 2) The pore-scale fluid flow field in the porous medium is generated with a lattice Boltzmann method and a user-specified body force that controls the volume averaged Darcy velocity. 3) Mobility and attachment/detachment of colloids is simulated by accounting of the force balance (fluid drag, Brownian motion, gravity and buoyancy forces, and fluid-chemical forces including DLVO and van der Waals mechanisms). Colloid mobility is carried out at a submicron to nanometer scale and requires grid refinement of the LB flow field. To speed up computations the fluid-chemical forces are precomputed for every grid cell.
Because of computational considerations, the LB-Colloids package is presently only able to deal with 2D representations of the porous medium. Code-development and testing (chapter 4) would have taken too long for a full 3D approach. The main draw-back of the 2D approach is that these cannot accurately represent 3D pore-structures. However, no fundamental “new” mechanisms are needed for a 3D approach and we expect that this can be easily built into the clean and well-documented LB-colloids code. The LB-Colloids framework is applied on data obtained from a break-through experiment of TiO2 nanoparticles. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.)

The demand for healthy and non-contaminated foods has increased between the consumers that become more and more exigent in terms of quality. The organic products appear as an option for the requirements of these consumers. However, research involving the organic production of fruits is still incipient. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the weed control by ground covers, its action on the weeds in the line of the apple trees in an organic orchard, the response in terms of apple tree vegetative development, and soil chemical and physical properties. The experiment is located at Embrapa/CNPUV, in Vacaria, RS, Southern Brazil. The orchard was planted in 2003, with cv. Galaxy on Marubakaido rootstock and M9 filter, in a Brown Latosol. The treatments were as follows: manual hoeing control, black plastic film, black plastic shade screen, new pinus sawdust, pinus needle mulch, Andropogon sp mulch, annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), black oat (Avena strigosa), black oat + common vetch (Vicia sativa), black oat + fodder radish (Raphanus sativus), annual ryegrass + white clover (Trifolium repens) + native plant cover, weed mowing; control without weed management. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with three replications. The weed incidence and the growth of apple tree were evaluated. Soil chemical and physical properties were analyzed in the layer 0-5 and 5-10 cm depth. Pinus needle mulch, black plastic, manual weed control, and new pinus sawdust were more effective to reduced the weed incidence, controlling more than 90%. The use of soil cover affected the height and the diameter of the trees, and black plastic and pinus needle mulch were the better covers concerning apple development. Soil chemical properties under these managements were adequate for apple tree growth, showing differences only between the orchard condition in relation to the natural forest. Soil physical properties were not affected by the different ground covers and showed its good quality, maintained in adequate conditions to plant growth

Full textThe conservation of edaphic biodiversity in Araucaria Forests favors the processes of decomposition and nutrient cycling, improving the physico-chemical and biological soil properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of the macrofauna, mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and environmental explanatory variables (physico, chemical and microbiological) as indicators of soil quality in two different contrasting seasons (winter and summer) in Araucaria Forests. We evaluated forests with native Araucaria angustifolia (NF) and reforested areas (RF) in three different regions in the State of São Paulo. Each forest had three true replicates, in which we collected at random, fifteen soil samples for evaluation of physical attributes (density, macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity and moisture), chemical attributes [pH, organic carbon (org-C), P, Ca, Mg, K, Al and H+Al] and biological attributes [macrofauna, AMF, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal respiration (CO2-C), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and dehydrogenase activity (Desi)]. At the same sampling points we evaluated the edaphic macrofauna, the density of AMF and root colonization in Araucaria. We evaluated the litter dry matter (MSS) and analyzed the contents of C, N and S. The physico-chemical and microbiological soil attributes and the chemical litter attributes were submitted to analysis of variance (Two-way ANOVA). The abundance of macrofauna and of earthworm species were submitted to a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and the microbiological variables, litter dry weight, physico-chemical attributes of soil and litter were used as explanatory variables (EV). The abundance of AMF species was submitted to the PCA and the physico-chemical variables of soil and litter were used as EV. Additionally, the abundance of macrofauna and EV were submitted to a Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA) and to one Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). The macrofauna showed greater richness of groups in the summer, and the NF provided the highest diversity. Moisture, total porosity, S litter content, pH, K, MBC and basal respiration were the edaphic attributes most important to separate the areas. The group Oligochaeta, especially the species Ponthoscolex corethrurus and Amynthas spp., were good indicators of soil quality and/or disturbance in these Araucaria forests. We found 35 AMF taxons, and the genera Glomus, Acaulospora and Scutellospora were the most abundant. The species Ambispora appendicula showed the highest relative abundance. In winter, a high correlation of the microbiological attributes Desi and CO2-C with pH and H+Al was found, while in the summer, the org-C, moisture, Mg, pH and Carbon of the litter were more correlated with Desi activity and C-CO2. The attributes H+Al, P, total porosity, S of the litter and soil moisture were the most important attributes to discriminate the areas, regardless of the season.

Full textAgroforestry aims to reduce the effects caused by human interference in the environment, helping to conserve biodiversity. In this work the objective was to verify the chemical, physical and biological indicators of the soil of an agroforest in initial development. The study was carried out in the didactic / demonstration unit of agroforestry, located at the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR), Câmpus Dois Vizinhos. Soil samples were collected and traps were installed to sample the epiedaphic fauna in six areas (treatments): four agroforestry quadrants, the secondary forest area and an area under crop-livestock integration system. The collections were carried out in 2013 and 2015, both in November, at six collection points (pseudoreptions), stratified into three depths: 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm. The soil chemical analyzes were of macronutrients, aluminum and organic matter, and related indexes were calculated. The physical analyzes were of density, macroporosity and microporosity. It was also evaluated soil penetration resistance using penetrometer. Epidaphic fauna was collected with Pitfall-traps traps. To evaluate the microbial activity of the soil, the C-CO2 mineralization was determined in the 0-5 cm layer. The data were submitted to Analysis of Variance, followed by comparison of means of treatments by the Scott-Knott test. To verify if there were differences between the collection years (2013 and 2015) the Wilcoxon paired test or paired t-test was applied. The indicators of soil physical quality of agroforestry are at intermediate levels, similar to the integration system for livestock farming, but still below the indicators of a secondary native forest. It was possible to verify that comparing the evaluations of 2013 with those of 2015, there was no significant difference for most of the analyzed variables. The evaluation of the improvement of the soil of an agroforest with little time of implantation, can be realized using the physical and biological attributes of the soil.

Phosphorus is a nutrient that limits production in tropical soils, which directly affects the culture of cane sugar, for which the phosphorus is widely recognized as an effective practice to increase the productivity of sugarcane, but its management is still subject of study for not having an ideal way of using this fertilizer that will reflect positively on your productivity, made possible a better utilization of this nutrient in culture, greater longevity of fields and, consequently, a higher economic return for producers . Thus, this study investigated the influence of phosphate fertilizer production plant and ratoon cane, to propose a management for this type of cultivation that takes into account physical and chemical characteristics of soils that are related to the buffering capacity of the soil phosphate . We installed two field trials in three different locations in the Northeast: Plant Bom Jesus / EP; Experimental Station Cane Sugar Carpina / PE and distillery Japungu / PB for that, were selected clayey soils (PVAd2) , loamy-sand (PADx) and sandy (PVAd1), respectively. The research consisted of two trials that evaluated the first two crop cycles in a randomized complete block design, with four repetitions, taking a dose of 200 kg P2O5 ha-1 as a reference for the distribution of treatments which consisted applications located at the bottom of the groove of the cane plant doses of 0, 40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 kg ha-1 of P205, dividing the phosphorus in sugarcane ratoon in two doses 0 and 40 kg ha-1 P205, to evaluate the effect of P fertilization in the first trial. In the second test was applied to plant cane in 200 kg ha-1 of P205 at the bottom of the furrow, 200 kg ha-1 of P205 in phosphate, 60 kg ha-1 in foundation P205 + 140 kg ha-1 of P205 in phosphate and 100 kg ha-1 of P205 in foundation + 100 kg ha-1 of P205 in phosphate and 140 kg ha-1 in foundation P205 + 60 kg ha-1 of P205 in phosphate, and a treatment without P fertilization. The P source was triple superphosphate used. At the end of each cycle is conducted in twelve plant growth evaluation, each of the four central grooves, these plants were then separated into leaf, stem and pointer, and the juice extracted, to determine the P these compartments. We determined the yield (TCH) and data technology soluble solids (Brix), Purity, fiber, PCC and ATR. Available P was estimated by Mehlich-1 and anion exchange resin (AER), and its levels correlated with available chemical, physical and mineralogical soil. It is concluded in this study that the extraction and recovery rate of applied P in soils by anion exchange resin did not correlate with any physical and chemical characteristics of soils evaluated; The P extracted by Mehlich-1 correlated with Feo and the ratio Feo / Fed; doses of phosphate favored the productivity of sugar cane plant and ratoon cane for the three soils; Fertilization coverage incorporated into the soil favored the extraction and allocation by the P and leaves of sugarcane grown in soil PVAd1 and PADx, respectively, and finally in the soils with lower phosphate buffer is recommended to fractionate the application of phosphate fertilizer.

In the Amazon region, a major part of the forest have been overthrow for different uses, such as the use of wood to confection of furniture , to create new roads, build cities, pasture and other uses. Those actions made the soil suffers the direct actions of many tips of process among of these are the abusive wear of the soil, which causes impacts, that can be irreversible furthermore, the soil of those regions are susceptible to erosive process when there is the takeover of the vegetation and depending of the local geomorphology the degradation happens faster, especially when the steepness of the slope is long. Therefore, the initial success in the recovery of a degraded ecosystem depends of the management to be executed in the area and the species to be used. Knowing this, the re-establishment of the ecological process and eventually the full recovery, reducing the erosive process. This study comprehends a evaluation among several vegetable species, with interventions and management tactic to improve the physic-chemistry propriety of the soil and evaluate the growth behavior of the vegetable species in the area. This experiment was realized between the months of January/2010 to April/2011, in the area belonged to Zone SuperintendenceofManaus (SUFRAMA) localized in the neighbor Vila Buriti, south zone of Manaus, AM. The main goal of this project was to evaluate the development and the efficiency of five vegetable species: Ingá-de-metro (Ingá Edulis), Goiaba de anta (Bellucia grossularioide) Guaraná (Paullinia cupana) Cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) e a Leucena (Leucaena leucocephala). The secondary goals were: evaluate the alterations in the physics variables (particle size, bulk density, true density, total porosity, macro and micro penetration resistance) and chemical(concentration ofmacroand micronutrients, pH, H 2 O) in the soil; evaluate the water infiltration capacity in soil in the plots of the experiment; monitor the growth of the species and evaluate the quantity and the stock of nutrients inserted in the plots with secondary vegetationchopped(minced poultry) (C, N, K, P, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe).. Initially, before the plantation of the species, were collected some samples to realize the chemistry and physics analyze, at 20 cm of depth in each plot. With this done, were incorporated on the soil of the plots 1,3,5,7 and 9, 50 kg of minced 11 poultry, every 4 months for the period of 1 year and in the plots 2,4,6,8 and 10, any kind of material were inserted (control plots). After the installation (30 days after) were realized the allometric measures (diameter10 cmof soil, height andcup size). Infiltration and resilience tests were done. After the collect of data in the period of 1 year, then observed that the plots 5 and 6 and 9 and 10, inga and leucena, respectively, had the best development, the species goiaba de anta, cupuaçu, e guarana did not resist in those conditions. The minced poultry shown a positive effect, collaborating to the improve of the soil fertility, the survive of some species and the natural regeneration, enabling a better capacity to make its own functions. The results allows accomplish that the initial success in the recovery of a degraded soil for erosive process depends of the management practices realizes in the site and the use of species with a fast growth and with that, can give a coverage to the soil. Thus, the species inga and leucena are indicated to degraded environmental such as minced poultry.

Full textThe main objective of this study was to contribute for the sustainability of land use in the central Amazon, evaluating the influence of vegetation cover on nutrient concentrations in soil solution that is, on the amounts of cations, anions and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Using a primary forest as reference, we compared these concentrations with those in a degraded area, in a reforestation and also in a secondary forest. The study was conducted in the counties of Manaus and Presidente Figueiredo. In each site we collected soil solution using tension lysimeters installed at the depths of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 150 cm for the inorganic phase and at 20 and 100 cm for the analysis of the organic phase. The soil itself was also collected at the same depths used for the study of the inorganic phase of soil solution, to determine its structure and chemical composition. Soil solution and precipitation were collected during a hydrological year, following the regional climate seasonality in the years of 2002 and 2003. After sampling, filtering and preserving in the field, soil solution samples were sent to the laboratory for the determination of cation and anion concentrations by liquid chromatography (Dionex, DX500) and DOC concentrations in a total organic carbon analyzer (Shimadzu, TOC5000A). Most of the soils were classified as Oxisols, very acid, highly weathered and with low nutrient availability. Sodium and potassium were the most predominant cations in soil solution, due to the influence of the atmospheric inputs. For anions, bicarbonate and chloride were showed the highest concentrations. At the sites covered with vegetation, biological activity played an important role in bicarbonate concentrations, as opposed to the site without vegetation, in which chloride was predominant, due to atmospheric inputs. There was a good correlation between vegetation cover and the dynamics of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, all of which have as the main source recycling of organic matter recycling and throughfall. At the degraded area, chloride and sodium predominated, due to their main source, which is the precipitation. At the secondary forest and the reforestation there are indicators of the recovery of pristine conditions, whit higher levels of nutrients than those of the degraded area, specially significant increases in DOC and nitrate concentrations. Not only the vegetation influenced the dynamics of these nutrients in soil solution, but also soil texture, acidity, soil depth and precipitation. DOC, for example, showed significant increases in concentrations at 1m depths, probably due to the lowest iron and aluminum concentrations at these soil depths. This increase of DOC with depth may indicate an important connection between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem, with the acting as an exporter of C to the rivers of the region.

Full textAmong the processes involved in the behavior and the bioavailabilty of heavy metals in soil, those related with the adsorption are of great importance. Despite of the multielementary nature of the soil-solution system and the complexity of the involved reactions, the knowledge of the adsorption mechanisms in competitive systems allows a more realistic evaluation of the metals behavior in the soil. The objectives of this work was (i) to evaluate the competitive adsorption of cadmium, copper, nickel and zinc in surface samples (A horizons) of 14 representative soils of the State of São Paulo, Brazil; (ii) to obtain adsorption isotherms in competitive and non-competitive systems, using the Langmuir model in order to simulate the adsorption; (iii) to establish metal affinity sequences for each soil and (iv) to establish relationships between the adsorptive behavior of metals and some soils attributes using simple correlations and multiple regressions analysis. Two grams soil subsamples were set into 50 mL centrifuge tubes, adding 20 mL of 0.01 mol L-1 NaNO3 solution (relation 1:10) at equimolar concentrations (0.017; 0.034; 0.085; 0.17; 0.255; 0.51; 0.85 and 1.275 mmol L-1) of Cu, Ni, Cd and Zn, in the isolated form (non-competitive system) and in set (competitive system). The obtained suspensions were shaked during one hour, centrifuged afterwards (1,100 rpm) through 10 min and filtered. The metals concentrations in solution were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The adsorbed metal amounts were assumed to be equal to the difference between the initial amount and the metal remaining content at the ending of the reaction period. The Rhodic Eutrudox, Kandiudalf Eutrudalf, Typic Hapludult-2 (clayey-textured), Typic Hapludult (clayeytextured) and Typic Haplaquoll presented the highest metals adsorption capacity, whereas the lowest was observed for Typic Quartzipsamment and for Arenic Hapludult. In general, the competition between metals diminished their maximum adsorption. In the non-competitive system, the most common affinity sequence was Cu > Zn > Ni > Cd, whereas in the competitive system, the most common sequence was Cu > Cd > Zn > Ni. In general, the Langmuir model simulate satisfactorily the adsorption of metals of the studied soils. The soils attributes presenting positive correlation with the maximum adsorption of metals were pH, MnO, CTC and silt. The correlation was negative with the soil sand content. Employing the multiple regression, the maximum adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni was found to be related with CTC and MnO, while for Cu only the MnO content was related with it maximum adsorption. Such results pointed out the importance of the manganese interactions as a controlling factor related to the behavior of heavy metals in soils from tropical humid areas.

Full textAbstract: The sugarcane currently appears in the agricultural scenario as one of the main crops, performing in expansion not only in the state of São Paulo, but also in another several states. Duo to this expansion and the federal laws that regulate the end of fire in the cane fields, the sugarcane harvest is going through a transition moment, ceasing to be held manually and with fire in the fields (burnt cane) and going to be harvested with machinery and without fire (green cane). With the change in the way of harvesting, a large amount of cane straw has been left on the soil surface, creating a new pedoenvironment, which has caused changes in the chemical, physical and even in iron oxides, which are considered stable attributes of the soil for a long time. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the variations in the chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of the soil subjected to two different types of harvesting sugar cane and determine the spatial variability of soil properties in areas of green cane harvesting and burnt cane. Two parcels of approximately one hectare each were defined in areas with green cane and burnt cane. Were taken in each area, soil samples at 126 points in the depths of 0.0-0.25 and 0.25-0.50 m. Those samples were subjected to chemical, physical and mineralogical properties analysis. At a depth of 0.0 to 0.25 m were chosen 20 points in each area, which were subjected to analysis of the degree of humification of soil organic matter. The analysis results were submitted to analysis of descriptive statistics with comparison of means test, the multivariate statistical analysis of clusters and also the principal component analysis. Abstract: The use of statistical techniques to assess measuring the behavior of attributes of the soil is an important factor in the determination of management and proper use of soil. Thus, this work has as objective to evaluate the spatial variability of the magnetic susceptibility and physical and chemical attributes of soil and apply multivariate techniques to characterize different environments in the Southern region of Amazonas. The study was carried out in a Red Argisol submitted to different environments: soil horizon with anthropic or archaeological black earth (TPA) on the surface, soil in the natural environment or the forest and soil in use with livestock grazing brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha). These areas were established grids of 70 x 70 m, with regular spacing of 10 m. Soil samples were collected at depths of 0-20 and 40-60 cm. Were determined chemical attributes (pH in water, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and potential acidity) and physical (texture, macroporosity, microporosity, mean weight diameter, bulk density, particle density and magnetic susceptibility. The data were submitted analyzes of variance, and the averages compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. For characterization of the variability, was performed the descriptive statistics and geostatistics that served as the basis for the determination of the scaled semivariograms The coefficient of variation and the range of scaled semivariogram, were used to determine the density minimum sample collection that can promote the characterization of the spatial variability of the studied attributes for the three environments. On the other hand, the data were analyzed by subjecting them to multivariate statistical techniques in order to characterize the environments. The results show that the area with black earth archaeological requires more number of soil samples for characterization of the spatial variability of attributes (5 points ha-1). The ...

This study aimed to evaluate the operational performance relating the effect of forward speed of a tractor-planter combined with three plant densities (number of seeds per meter) and the energy demand of the set, the quantification regarding agronomic corn and analysis physical and chemical of soil. The experiment was established in the area of Finance Education, Research and Production, UNESP / Jaboticabal, SP, the experimental area is classified as Typic Eutrudox, moderate, clayey. The experiment consisted of a 2x3 factorial conducted under randomized block design. treatments under two travel speeds of the tractor-planter (6.5 km h-1 and 4.5 km h-1), defined according to the power of the tractor to be used, and three plant populations of maize (55.000, 65.000 and 75.000 plants ha-1), defined depending on the hybrid used, with four replications, a total of 24 plots. We analyzed the variables of energy demand in the sowing operation such as strength and power at the drawbar, fuel consumption and fuel and operating performance in field operations. Variables related to culture: the average number of days to emergence of corn seedlings, initial and final population of plants, height of ear insertion viable, plant height and stem diameter, number of rows, number of grains in the row index and cob, yield and mass of cornstalks and weeds. The speed of movement influence on power, operational field capacity and fuel consumption, increasing these variables and consumption reducing operating this variable, the population of corn plants in the affected stem diameter, with the smallest population in the highest diameter The combination of higher speed of seeding...
The use of statistical techniques to assess measuring the behavior of attributes of the soil is an important factor in the determination of management and proper use of soil. The ...

Abstract: The decay constant (k) can be used in the decision making of the soil management activities and it is an indicative that describe the variability of soil carbon stability, which depends on the interactions of physical, chemical and biological attributes. Their measurement is given by the equation: k = Fm / Estc, where: k = decay constant (time-1 ); Fm = carbon emission via CO2 determined in the study areas (Mg ha1 ); Estc = is the soil carbon stock (Mg ha-1 ). The objective of this work was to determine the structure of the spatial variability of the soil carbon losses, expressed by the factor k, and it is relationship with the soil attributes in sugarcane areas, in the central region of the Brazil. The experiments were carried out in areas of commercial sugarcane plantation, in the municipalities of Motuca (MOT), Guariba (GUA) and Pradopolis - SP (PAD), in the State of Sao Paulo and Aparecida do Tabuado (APT) in Mato Grosso do Sul. The Fm determinations were recorded in the study areas by the LI-COR system (LI-8100). The multivariate approach indicated that the first two main components (CP1 and CP2) explained around 55% to 68% of the total variability contained in the dataset in the areas studied. The soil physical attributes showed significant correlations with CP1 and indicated a contrast between water free porosity and soil moisture. In CP2, the chemical attributes correlations indicated a joint action between the cation exchange capacity and the available soil phosphoru... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Full textThe purpose of the present study was to evaluate acute and chronic toxicity and mutagenesis of the treated final effluent from the metallurgical industry; to look for the presence of the alterations detected in the effluent and in the soil that has been aprayed daily since January 2011; to evaluate plants as ecological receptors of heavy metals. Physical and chemical analyses were performed both for the effluent and for the soil, and compared with standards from legislation. Most of the emission parameters from the effluent to surface waters were within the legal standards, except for the levels of total N and P. Analyzing the soil higher values were observed in irrigated soil (SI) for P, K and most of the metals analyzed, and for Ni they were above those of reference considering the more restrictive legislation. The characterization of metals in the plants showed higher concentrations of SI compared to reference soil (SR). The roots of Lolium multiflorum presented higher values than those observed in leaves, especially for Al, Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr. and Pb. The effluent toxicity was analyzed at three trophic levels (Ceriodaphnia dubia; Pimephales promelas and Pseudokirchneriella subcaptata) with the presence of an acute and chronic effect for C. dubia and chronic for P. subcaptata. Survival and growth tests were also applied in Oryza sativa, Raphanus sativus and Lactuca sativa (plantules) and Eisenia fetida (worm) where the growth of O. sativa and E. fetida were affected; on the other hand, in the carbon cycle test and nitrogen for soil microorganisms, there was no toxicity. The avoidance test in SI with Eisenia andrei showed a negative response. The mutagenesis of the effluent and soil samples was evaluated in the Salmonella/microsome assay, microsuspension method, in the presence and absence of metabolization (S9 fraction – homogenate of rat liver cells, S9). The strains used evaluated frameshift errors TA98 and TA97a (sensitive to heavy metals), YG1041 and 1042 absence of metabolization (sensitive to nitrocompounds ) and base pair substitution TA100 and TA102 (sensitive to oxidative damage). The dose-response curves were evaluated by regression analysis and ANOVA (SALANAL program). The effluent showed significant responses, with values (revertants/mL) of 510±151.8 (TA97a-S9) and 780±136.9 (TA100+S9). The results indicated mutagenesis for (TA97a+S9) for organic extracts The mutagenesis of the acid soil extracts showed positive responses (92±31.7 revertants/mg of dry soil equivalent; TA97a+ S9) and indicative of mutagenesis TA100+S9. The effects detected indicate that inorganic compounds, as heavy metals, can lead to the toxicity and mutagenesis observed, besides accumulating in the vegetable tissues. The studies subsidized preventative measures for legislation that considers restrictions to the discharge of potentially polluting substances on the soil, using analyses of the chemical doses together with toxicity and genotoxicity assays.

Full textThe crisis of the water, the sewage domestic increase generated in stations of treatments and the spilling of these effluents in bodies of water are suggesting new solutions for those problems. The disposition of wastewater treated in soils implicate in the nutrient and organic matter recycling, acting as a complementary process to the treatment of those waters. Rich in nutrients mainly N (Nitrogen), P (Phosphorus) and Na (Sodium) the treated wastewater has been used in the agriculture through technical criteria as source of nutrients for several crops. Before this context, the objective of this work was to analyze the possible effects of the irrigation with effluent treated in some chemical and physical properties of a soil cultivated with Orange. The experimental area located her beside the Station of Sewage Treatment (SST) Piracicamirim that is located in the margins of the highway \"Luiz de Queiroz\" in the municipal district of Piracicaba, São Paulo State. The applied treatments were related to the percentile of humidity of the field capacity varying in T100%, T125%, T150%, T200% and TSI (treatment without irrigation). The experimental design was a split plot scheme of randomized blocks subdivided in time, with five treatments and three repetitions. The accomplished fertilization was the one of half of the dose recommends for the orange crop. In whole the study the soil samplings were accomplished in the layers 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80 and 80-100, while the samplings of soil solution were accomplished in the depths 30, 100 and 200 cm. The chemical variables determined in the soil were pH, H + Al, Al, Na, K, Ca and Mg. In soil solution the variables were pH, CE, Al, Na, K, Ca and Mg. The certain physical variables were fraction particle sizing and degree of clay dispersion. The sewage effluent treated (SET) used presents low concentrations of Ca, Mg, In the, K, Al, CE and RAS when compared with values found in the literature. For that fact, SET present potential minor of alterations in the chemical and physical properties of the soil. The exchangeable sodium and PST increased in elapsing of the experiment, while the concentration of sodium in the soil solution decreased. The exchangeable calcium in the soil suffered decrease in the superficial layers, and increase in the subsuperficial layers. The perspectives of the irrigation of SET in the orange crop are promising, have seen the importance of the culture in the Brazilian and world scenery. However, it is suggested studies of long period in order to monitor the possible impacts to cause in the structure of the soil.
