The use of critical loads of acidity to quantify damage to sensitive components of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems has developed rapidly over the last decade. This thesis presents a modelling approach to quantify damage to ombrotrophic peat ecosystems, since such damage can result in a decline in both surface water quality and the ability of peat to act as an absorbent to aerial

The soils also contain elevated concentrations of metal such as iron and aluminium which are harmful to farmed fish and shrimp. Magistro darbe tiriamas skirtingų kalkinių medžiagų poveikis dirvožemio potencialiajam rūgštingumui ir judriajam aliuminiui. Darbo objektas – keturios kalkinės medžiagos: malta kreida, „Agrokalkės” (klinčių ir nedegtų kalkių miltelių mišinys), dolomitmičiai (dolomito atsijos), ir granuliuota kalkinė medžiaga „Kalktrąšė”. Darbo metodai – kalkinėmis medžiagomis buvo pakalkintos dvi, pasotinto balkšvažemio Dystric Albeluvisol ir nepasotinto balkšvažemio Eutric Albeluvisol, lauko bandymų aikštelės; dirvožemio potencialusis rūgštingumas nustatytas laboratorijoje elektroniniu pH-metru, judriojo ali

Thesis (MScAgric (Soil Science))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.<br>The soils of north-west Zambia are largely unexplored and are regarded by local residents as problematic in providing sufficient nutrients for the staple crop of maize in the area. The area is semi-tropical, with an average rainfall of 1300mm annum-1 falling predominantly in the summer. The undulating landscape is dominated by miombo woodland interspersed with savanna grassland. Little work has been done on these soils and further information is required to understand their origin and their fertility status. The main objective

Abstract:
Rice is a staple crop for many countries around the world, and is one of the top three food sources globally. Many environments where rice is grown contain stressors likely to limit its growth and yield. In southern Senegal (Casamance region), rice is mainly cultivated in lowlands near estuaries where drought, salinity, acidity, poor soil fertility, and iron toxicity are the main limiting factors. In Casamance, average rice yield for local farmers is 1 to 2 tons per hectare (809 to 1618 pounds per acre), compared to worldwide average yield of more than 4 tons per hectare. The soil where our 2-

The impact of liming (10 t ha-1 of calcitic and dolomitic limestone, separately) on the soil solution and soil matrix was investigated in an acidic metal-contaminated soil from Sudbury, ON. A soil mesocosm experiment was performed; columns were leached with simulated rainwater and the soil solution collected at various locations throughout the soil column. The dissolution rate of calcitic limestone used for this experiment was found to be approximately double that of the dolomitic limestone investigated. Calcium and Mg released during limestone dissolution migrated through the soil profile to

Abstract:
Calcium (Ca) depletion and increased bioavailability of aluminum (Al) are potential consequences of soil acidification caused by acidic deposition and other anthropogenic factors. Tree declines are associated with base cation depletion and increased Al toxicity in forest soils in North America, Europe, and Asia. Changes in soil Ca and Al availability may lead to increased oxidative stress and disruptions in carbohydrate relationships in forest trees, as well as to substantial alterations in the capacity for enzymatically controlled processes of decomposition and mineralization in forest
