Abstract Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants provide the twin advantages of energy generation and thermal energy storage. The latter provides CSPs the advantage of persistent power, a feature that is absent in photovoltaic plants. However, there is much to be done to make CSPs competitive with traditional coal-powered plants. Reduction of CSP costs relies on the selection and use of salts with high heat capacity, relatively low melting temperatures and good thermal stability. Chloride salts are viable candidates that fulfill the technical requirements and are relatively low-cost. However, th

Abstract Molten salts have emerged as viable candidates for thermal energy storage in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) applications. Candidate chloride salts offer the advantages of being readily available and stable at high temperatures, thus opening up the possibility for increased power generation efficiency. However, molten chloride salts are corrosive; therefore, proper materials selection for plant hardware is vital. Current CSP plants use stainless steels and nickel-base alloys as materials of construction because of the desirable combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resista

Abstract The corrosion behavior of a ferritic-martensitic UNS 42200 (X20Cr-MoV11-1) steel and the stainless steel UNS31600 (316SS) is studied in molten solar salts at 600°C for up to 5000 hours. Focus is based on the effect of chloride impurity level in the molten nitrate salts and the mechanism of corrosion under different chloride contents. Gravimetric and metallographic methods are used to characterize the kinetics of corrosion and the extent of corrosion. Results showed that the ferritic-martensitic steel showed a significant mass gain by forming a thick and non-protective oxide scale in l

Abstract Within the last years the use of feasible alternative energy sources has risen and is going to replace fossil resources more and more. Nevertheless, service conditions in solar facilities are due to the chemical composition of heat transmission media and temperatures, in many cases, extreme in terms of corrosion. Since the construction of power plants shall be economical with maximum life service, materials selection based on preliminary material qualification is essential to guarantee a secure and reliable operation of those facilities. The materials selection depends on the operatio

This work performed measurement and verification of installed, operational solar wall systems at Fort Drum, NY, and Forbes Field, Air National Guard, Topeka, KS. Actual annual savings were compared estimated savings generated by a solar wall modeling tool (RETScreen). A comparison with the RETScreen modeling tool shows that the measured actively heated air provided by the solar wall provides 57% more heat than the RETScreen tool predicted, after accounting for boiler efficiency. The solar wall at Fort Drum yields a net savings of $851/yr, for a simple payback of 146 years and a SIR of 0.16. RE

Abstract:
The Social License to Automate Task has investigated the social dimensions of user engagement with automated technologies in energy systems to understand how end-user trust to automate is built and maintained in different jurisdictions and cultural settings. The rapid uptake of renewable energy systems will require new automated technologies to balance energy supplies. Some developers are looking to locate these in households where energy is being used. This saves moving the energy from centralised generation sites (remote hydro, solar or wind). This report details the findings from a 2 year p
