Abstract:
Astronomy is an integral part of many high-school science programs. Project STAR and the Science Assessment and Research Project at the University of Minnesota have recently recognized this. In addition, astronomy is a part of most elementary and middle-school science programs. In the Platteville, Wisconsin, school system, the solar system is a unit of study for all third grade students and a study of the stars is a part of the eighth grade science program. This is also true for other school systems in this area, in the Chicago area, and I would suspect, across the nation. However, most elementary school teachers have had little science course work and none in astronomy. Middle-school and high-school teachers have better backgrounds for teaching science but little or no astronomy course work. Some of those who teach astronomy are active in local astronomy groups and read Astronomy or Sky and Telescope magazines, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Abstract:
This article discusses the performance of a new skylight for standard classrooms at the Egebjerg School (Denmark), which was built ca. 1970. This building underwent important reforms under a European project to which the authors contributed. This research aimed to create a new skylight prototype that is useful for several schools in the vicinity, since there is a lack of educational facilities. The former skylights consisted of plastic pyramids that presented serious disadvantages in terms of sustainability matters. During the design process, the priority changed to studying the factors that correlate daylighting with energy and other environmental aspects in a holistic and evocative approach. Accordingly, the new skylight features promote the admittance and diffusion of solar energy through adroit guidance systems. In order to simulate different scenarios, we employed our own simulation tool, Diana X. This research-oriented software works with the effects of direct solar energy that are mostly avoided in conventional programs. By virtue of Lambert’s reciprocity theorem, our procedure, which was based on innovative equations of radiative transfer, converts the energy received by diffusive surfaces into luminous exitance for all types of architectural elements. Upon completion of the skylights, we recorded onsite measurements, which roughly coincided with the simulation data. Thus, conditions throughout the year improved.

Abstract:
Gedebage integrated vocational high school (SMK) is a school which accommodates the concept of technopolis. The school has four programs: building engineering, family welfare education (PKK/food service), mechanical engineering, and tourism - which produce skilled and ready-to-work graduates. This article aims to recommend the sun exposure toward the building of the school, which is related to site planning and design strategies based on the duration of solar radiation on vegetation, and building facades as well as the distance between buildings through the use of Chronolux plug-in on Sketch-up Software. From the measurement, it is found that vegetation can reduce sky view factors (SVF) from 76.4 to 38.87%. For the building façade, it is able to reduce sun exposure from 4 hours 51 minutes to 3 hours 19 minutes with SVF from 47.26 to 38.11%. Meanwhile, the building distance of 9 m receives sun exposure from 9:00 am to 3.42 pm.

Abstract:
Global economic growth is accompanied by increased energy demand, thus conventional fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are the primary energy sources, are gradually being depleted. At the same time, the combustion of conventional fuel for energy production causes serious adverse effects on the environment and contributes to climate change due to the emitted greenhouse gases. For the above reasons, most of the developed and developing countries especially during the last decades, have introduced various incentives for the greater penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in all sectors of the economy. Concerning the building sector, several measures have been adopted, including the promotion of energy efficiency and energy saving. A significant proportion of the building stock are the school buildings where students and teachers spend a significant proportion of their daily time. Teachers' attitudes and views, especially the school unit managers concerning the use of RES in schools, are important in the effort to rationalize and control energy use. This study was conducted through a structured questionnaire applied to a sample of 510 school managers in Greece's primary and secondary education. The school unit managerial role for the case of Greek schools is performed by the school principal who has both administrative and educational duties. Statistical analysis included the application of Friedman's test and hypothesis test on questions concerning school manager environmental perceptions and energy-saving habits. According to the results, Greek school managers have a high degree of environmental sensitivity, since 97.6 % agreed or strongly agreed that the main concern should focus on energy saving. Furthermore, 71% of the respondent reported to have good knowledge on solar energy, followed by 64% on wind energy while only 34% are knowledgeable on biomass. Almost all the respondents (99%) agreed that it is important to provide more RES-orientated education through the taught curricula. Concerning energy saving behaviour, around 90% reported that they switch off the lights when leaving the classroom and they close the windows when the air-condition is operating. Hypothesis tests revealed a relationship between the school managers' ecological beliefs, the energy saving habits in the school environment, and the recognition of the importance of environmental education. Conclusions highlighted the need to intensify environmental education programs in the school environment concerning RES in schools. This will lead to a higher level of environmental awareness of both teachers and students and therefore to a more dynamic behaviour towards the effort to “greenify” the school environment.

Abstract:
Astronomy is the most popular and oldest of all sciences and it has had profound influence on human thought. Unfortunately, astronomy does not find an appropriate place in our school-college syllabi. This may be due to the fact that teaching of astronomy encounters a large number of problems with regard to visualization and practical experiments. Popularization of astronomy depends heavily on a large variety of astronomical events, such as the arrival of comets, eclipses, supernovae, etc. Visualization of dynamics in several directions, wide variance of time scales, concepts of space, etc., create problems in teaching/learning processes in astronomy. Our world of human experience is limited to within a narrow frame, whereas in astronomy we speak of size, time, and temperature in gigantic scales. To bring all these parameters onto the human level, one has to think of effective teaching aids and the right type of techniques. We have been using a large number of tools in teaching astronomy, including star charts, globes, models, photographs, slides, etc. Microcomputers act as an effective medium in teaching astronomy. They can even replace most of the above mentioned teaching aids (Hunt, 1986; Marx and Szucs, 1985; Sparkes, 1986). A microcomputer can also act as a textbook, a blackboard, or even a planetarium. The computer acts also as a mediator between the student and the model of some real-life situation. The process of building and using models, called simulation, helps us to investigate systems that would otherwise be inaccessible. We have developed a set of software to teach basic concepts in astronomy, such as the solar system, constellations, and the physics of stars. We have explored the possibilities of making the software interactive, using the observed data so that a real life situation can be experienced by the users, just as for practical experiments.

AbstractAstronomy is connected with the every day experiences of the people, since the observation of simple and repetitive phenomena, as the succesion of days and nights, untill events of high impact, as the total solar eclipses. In this sense, the Astronomy is a fascinating activity and can be used to inspire interest in sciences in general. In this contribution, we introduce the Network of Astronmy School Education as part of the IAU proposals connected with teaching training programs, and we highlight several examples on the specific topic of the eclipses: their importance and connection with the culture, that can capture students attention if we use the workshops as part of the classes.

Abstract:
Engineers provide essential services to society, solving pressing challenges through technological inventiveness. Students new to engineering often cite the lure of creative problem solving as attracting them to the discipline. However, traditional engineering curricula typically focus on a narrow application of fundamentals for solving closed-ended problems. Too often, engineering programs do not encourage inventive expression in problem solving. Not surprisingly, the attrition rate for engineering programs is unusually high. Recently, engineering education has shifted its focus to new, more engaging practices that incorporate hands-on methods, boosting prospects for students to engage in creative problem solving. Because service learning provides opportunities for applied work, incorporating it into engineering education programs in can engage students positively and lower attrition rates. Moreover, since engineers are fundamentally involved with social improvement, then engaging students in activities that expand their understanding of the potential impact their skills may impart to a community is not only prudent but best practices. This paper explores two case studies of community-based service learning engineering projects, highlighting community partnerships, analyses and decision-making that helped drive designs and outcomes. It explores how both the communities and students benefitted, focusing notably on the influence these activities had on student understanding of their work, academic and/or professional direction and social consciousness. These are analyzed via longitudinal reporting of students incorporating lessons learned several years post-project. The service learning projects took place in marginalized communities in Denver and Costa Rica. In the Denver project, engineering students designed, built and installed low cost solar heaters into an area with poor housing stock. In Costa Rica, students built a solar water heater for a local school. Keywords: applied learning, engineering education, experiential learning, service-learning.

Abstract:
Daily photoprotection (PhP) is essential in preventing harmful effects from solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. For that reason, we interviewed students aged from 4 to 20 years old about their knowledge on sun exposure and PhP habits. Age, sex, family income, and skin phototype were statistically related to the proposed questions. Our results show that Brazilian youngsters do not have the habit of wearing long-sleeved clothing (<15% in summer), sunglasses (0.0%), or hats (2.1%). More than 40% had no knowledge about ultraviolet index (UVI), while another 30% misinterpreted what it is. Less than half of all students wear sunscreen when out in the sun. Despite this low PhP use-rate, more than 90% know that UVR causes skin cancers. Low income was the factor that showed the greatest number of significant relationships with respect to the lack of PhP. The findings suggest that current traditional PhP campaigns are not efficient. We propose that PhP should be part of school curricula from elementary school onwards. After all, the lack of educational programs predisposes these youngsters to an increased chance of skin diseases in the future.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Effective solar protection is an uncommon practice among young people, increasing the likelihood of sunburn, sunstroke and skin cancers. This fact is more significant in the south of Brazil, where the prevalence of white skinned population is larger, being more prone to sun damage. OBJECTIVES: To study the practices of sun exposure and sun protection in high school students from the city of Carlos Barbosa - RS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study involving 775 students, enrolled on the first half of 2010, who had signed the consent form. We used a non-identifiable, self-administered questionnaire, with questions about related topics. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square or Fisher exact and t-Student tests. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under the number 2010-115H. RESULTS: Most students are exposed to the sun at the more critical periods, remaining exposed for more than an hour. Five hundred and seventy-six students (74,3%) reported using sunscreen, but less than 10% did it during all months of the year. Female teenagers are most likely to use sunscreen (p <0.001) and to spend less time exposed to sunlight (p <0.001). CONCLUSION: Most high school students from Carlos Barbosa had unsuitable sun exposure and sun protection habits, characterizing a high risk behavior for skin diseases. The existence of public programs for clarification of the risks to the population and the subsidization of sun protection products were suggested by these young people.

Abstract:
In Japan, graduates who become independent professionals in society have the right to choose energy providers given the liberalization of the electricity market in the country. This issue renders student perceptions regarding various types of energy generation a critical factor for decision making. Accordingly, we explored the risk and benefit perceptions of undergraduates regarding Japan’s main energy resources, namely, liquid natural gas (LNG), coal, hydropower, solar and nuclear resources, and petroleum. We also assessed energy acceptance among the target population and its influencing factors, such as student age and gender, school department, hometown, knowledge and experience of main power sources in Japan, and trust in government and power plant operation. These objectives were accomplished through field surveys and empirical characterizations of energy acceptance determinants. Compared with risk perception, benefit perception regarding all kinds of power generation was significantly predicted by knowledge. Experience explained only the perception of benefit from coal power generation, and benefit perception more strongly predicted energy acceptance than did risk perception. The findings suggested the necessity of university energy education programs for increased student knowledge of energy sources. Energy companies should increase energy benefits from economic, environmental, and energy security and safety perspectives to enhance energy acceptance among students. On the basis of the results, we classified energy sources in Japan into obscure (LNG and petroleum), well-known (coal and nuclear), and exploratory (hydropower and solar) resources—a first in the energy field and contributory to energy education design.

Abstract:
Results of a Kyiv Planetarium audience survey are discussed. Kyiv Planetarium has a "Big Zeiss 4" projector, a fulldome projection system, a dome 23 meters across, and 300 seats. Having presented a program to up to 300 visitors at once, it is not easy to examine the general public understanding of basic astronomy, to get feedback on the program, and to estimate the educational impact on the public. Strategically designed questionnaires were used to find out what are visitors’ personal experiences and previous knowledge. Questions in the questionnaire can be conditionally divided into several groups: - a) personal data (age, education); - b) astronomical knowledge and observational experience (attendance of astronomy lessons at school, observation of interesting astronomical phenomena such as eclipses, comets, meteors, experience of watching the sky through a telescope, age of the Earth and the Universe, reasons for seasonal changes and Moon phases, the brightest star, constellations that the visitor knows, number of planets in the Solar system, the biggest planet in the Solar system, how often do visitors read about space related topics); - c) visitors’ personal beliefs like their attitude towards horoscopes and extra-terrestrial life; and - d) visitors’ attitude towards planetarium itself, likes and dislikes, topics for future programs, expectations, sources of information about Planetarium, and number of their visits to planetarium. I discuss the results from 147 questionnaires that were gathered back, the most common misconceptions and public beliefs are revealed.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the study of the feasibility of increasing the efficiency, reliability and manufacturability of existing gas turbine power plants with additive technologies that allow creating recuperators with regeneration degrees of 90...95%. The characteristics are presented for the following gas turbine power plants: TEEDA (Iran) 3.13 MW, ODK Perm Motors GTU-4P (Russia) 4.13 MW, Siemens SGT-100 (Germany) 5.1 MW, Solar Turbines Taurus 60 (USA) 5.67 MW. The research was carried out using the methods and programs of the Higher School of Power Engineering for the calculation of thermal circuits of GTPP. The dependences of effective efficiency, work ratio, effective specific work and specific consumption of conventional fuel of GTPPs under examination on compressor pressure ratio and regeneration factor are obtained. Solving the problem of increasing the regeneration factor in GTPP (above 0.9) requires the development of special designs of heat exchanger matrices of the recuperator, which is only possible with the use of additive technologies and new heat-resistant materials. Promising recuperators have a more complex design of heat exchange matrices, which ensures their being very compact. Such technical solutions can ensure the development and creation of fundamentally new designs of GTPP heat exchangers and significantly improve their technical characteristics.

Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now categorizes skin cancer as epidemic. Nearly 90% of these deadly cancers start from sun exposure during the childhood years. This makes sun exposure in school-age children a serious public health risk, also one that school nurses can address. Solar radiation is now classified as a “known human carcinogen,” with ultraviolet rays joining the ranks of other known cancer-causing elements such as tobacco, arsenic, and radon. Sun exposure to unprotected skin results in painful burns, premature aging, cataracts, and weakened immune systems. School nurses can use the new CDC guidelines along with other local and state resources to develop a specific skin cancer prevention program for their schools. They are in a pivotal position to partner with students, parents, administrators, teachers, and coaches to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer in children. The article describes one high school’s skin cancer prevention project.

Abstract:
The installation of solar panels in rural community Malaysia are still preliminarily explored due to the excessive cost and limited access to the technology. This limitation has also led to dissemination delays especially in public-funded buildings such as mosques, public halls, hospitals and schools. Meanwhile, the existing subsidy of electricity supply rate to the society has led the community to become highly dependent and demanded on the power supply from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). Therefore, the increase of electricity tariff since 2014, has subsequently resulted in the increasing charge of monthly electricity bills. Without awareness, the electricity usage and charges will keep on increasing and may affect the monthly expenses especially to the public and private institutions. This situation may become worst to the self-funded institutions in rural areas including the ‘tahfiz’, international and conventional religious schools. The concern of this excessive charges on electricity tariff may influence these institutions to outsource funds such as through collecting donations from the community in which are not sustainably sufficient. Therefore, this research investigates an alternative supply of electricity that may reduce the cost and will benefit the institutions through bill-savings. The objective is to determine whether solar panel installation through a community-service programme can help the institutions to not only becoming electricity-sufficient but could also save the energy by generating power from solar energy. A case study was conducted at the ‘tahfiz’ school in Perak Tengah to determine the effectiveness of how this institution could reduce electricity bills besides establishing the green energy initiative. Remarkably, through the installation of a 2 kW solar power system, this research has discovered that the institutions have successfully saved 70% of the existing monthly electricity expenses. Therefore, this finding acknowledged solar energy through community-service as sufficient green initiative programme towards achieving sustainable living.

Abstract:
Global consumer electronic device market status and future forecast of growth in 2019-2025 is presented in complete Reuters review (https://www.reuters.com/brandfeatures/venture-capital/article?id=76507). With added commercial electronic products the market will exceed $152 Billions by 2022. The dynamics of electronic industry is incomparable market of chemical products, steel and even automotive. Even more impressive is the dynamics of solar panels manufacturing and installation. Last year solar cells produced about 1% of annual US electricity production. However in 2020 it will be already 2% of electricity produced in US. Availability of educated manpower of all levels from production line operators to technicians testing and installing the hardware and design engineers is the most important factor in existing trends of electronic industry. Only well-educated and inventive technical personnel could participate in design and fabrication of electronic products, which basically are modified or changed every two years. Our study summarizes joint work of University of Massachusetts and Nashoba Valley Technical School in developing innovative skills in high school students, who specialize in electrical engineering.

Abstract:
The paper presents the stages of development of astrometric research at the Ukrainian observatories in the ХIХ – beginning of ХХ century. They are related to the establishment of university astronomical observatories in Kyiv (1845), Odessa (1871), Kharkiv (1888). Mykolaiv Naval observatory was founded in 1821 for navigation needs with assistance of Admiral A.S. Greig. The absolute catalogs compiled at the Pulkovo and Mykolaiv Observatories made a significant contribution to the international work of compilation of a FK3 system. Special attention is paid to the scientific activity of the oldest observatory at the territory of Ukraine – the Astronomical observatory of L’viv University (1771). Researches at this observatory were mainly concerned with the field of geodesy and meteorology. Despite the short first period of scientific activity (near 10 years), it gave impetus to some famous scientists. At the last decades of ХIХ century observatory of the L’viv University renewed their activity in astrometry, solar physics, and astrophysics. Southern departments of Pulkovo observatory in Odessa (1899) and Mykolaiv (1912) played an important role in extension of Pulkovo absolute catalogues to the southern hemisphere. Systematic observations of the Sun conducted at these departments contributed to the more precise determination of the position of vernal equinox. In ХIХ century Ukrainian observatories participated in the international programs, such as AGK (Astronomischer Gesellschaft Katalog), the photographic catalog “Carte du Ciel” (France). Among the actual observational programs were surveys of zodiacal stars (M.P.Ditchenko in Kyiv), near-pole stars (V.I.Fabritius, R.P.Fogel, M.P.Ditchenko in Kyiv, L.O.Struve and K.N.Kuz'menko in Kharkiv, I.O.Djukov, L.F.Cherniev in Odessa). In the frame of observations of Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) and its southern continuation, organized by the German Astronomical Society, observations of the equatorial zone were provided by I.E. Kortazzi at Mykolaiv observatory, B.V.Novopashenny at the Astronomical Observatory of Odessa University in 1930s years. Needs of astrophotography lead to the creation of the “Сatalog of the faint stars” project. In 1932 at the First Astrometric Conference in Leningrad, the Pulkovo astronomers Gerasimovich B.P and Dniprovsky M.I. suggested the idea of using eхtragalactic nebulae as the reference objects for determination of the absolute motion of the stars. Among the tasks to be solved at the project was compilation of a general catalogue (KSZ) and a fundamental catalog of faint stars (FKSZ). It was planned to involve all the meridian instruments of the USSR as well as foreign ones, especially in the southern hemisphere. The idea of orientation of the KSZ coordinates system related to the observations of small planets was suggested by B.V.Numerov. Astronomers of Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory participated in the international part of this project (AGK3R-catalogue). The Poltava gravimetric observatory was founded by A.Ya.Orlov in 1926 to construct a gravity map of the territory of Ukraine and to establish astrometric research, earth tides, and Latitude Service with zenith-telescopes. The main research fields of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the NAS of Ukraine, founded by A.Ya.Orlov in 1944, were related to the positional and photographic astrometry during the first decade of its work. We defined three “genealogical scientific trees” of astrometric schools. Two of them were formed under the leadership of outstanding personalities of the XX century: Prof. Alexander Ya. Orlov (the founder and first director of the Observatory, 1944–1948, 1950–1951), who moved to Kyiv from Poltava, and Prof. Avenir A.Yakovkin (director of the Observatory in 1952–1959), who moved to Kyiv from Kazan. The third genealogical tree has grown from the Pulkovo astronomical school. Formation of main directions of scientific researches and its transformation are also discussed. Keywords: astrometric research, positional astrometry, photographic astrometry, fundamental astrometry.

In the Riau Islands Province which is a problem in the border region, among others, is the very wide stretch of border areas, still lack of management of potential and natural resources both state and private, handling border areas that have not been maximized and are still partial or sectoral, education and welfare levels which is still low compared to people in neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, the lack of security and defense facilities and infrastructure which can lead to weak supervision of violations of state borders, and the lack of integration of programs and activities in border area development. The formulation of the problem in this study is: How are the efforts to Build a Border Area in the Riau Islands Province in order to find a solution to improve community welfare on the front islands. The aim of the study was to find out how the government's efforts in Building Border Areas in the Riau Islands Province in order to improve Community Welfare on the Leading Islands. This study uses library research methods, namely by using secondary data from sources that are used as objects of research, both books or literature, electronic media (internet sites), online media, which have to do with the problem of this research. Data collection in this study was conducted using library studies. The efforts made by the Riau Islands Provincial Government to find solutions to improve the welfare of the people on the leading islands are the Launching of the Integrated Border Area Movement Development Program (Gerbangdutas) in Natuna Regency, Accelerating rehabilitation of habitable homes, markets, schools, health centers, Village and Village Development Acceleration Program (P3DK), efforts to resolve national borders, and increase electrification, especially in small islands and remote areas through the construction of solar power plants, micro hydro power plants and power plant technology development Electric Power and construction of ports / piers in the border area. On the other hand, because of the strategic nature of the Riau Islands Province, it needs to be supported by good connectivity, especially sea connectivity. Therefore, a number of ports and ferry boats are built which are a priority so as to reduce intra-regional and inter-regional disparities. Batam as a city that also borders directly with neighboring Singapore is used as an industrial, tourism, shipping and service area. Another form carried out in the context of building border areas is by implementing the Sea Toll Program. It is expected that with the relationship between sea ports, there will be smooth delivery of goods to border areas. The Sea Toll Program is carried out, especially for the Riau Islands Province because the Riau Islands region has many seas. Whereas in the field of infrastructure, especially related to infrastructure, the Provincial Government of Riau Islands and PT. PLN in Riau Region and Riau Islands faces many obstacles, especially for border areas with many disruptions and constraints, especially because the condition of the Riau Islands is the sea, in addition to weather and climate factors which are often uncertain and the absence of port loading and unloading facilities.
