Abstract To control an un-swept flying wing is problematic in some ways. One of the problems is that when the wing experiences a disturbance in yaw, it does not, since it has no tail, generate any torque in the opposite direction as a plane with a vertical stabilizer does. This thesis is foremost aimed at exploring one particular solution to this problem. One approach to this problem is to place the motors out on the wing and differentiate the thrust, to achieve the same torque as splitted elevons or a vertical stabilizer does. This is what NASA used on the flying unmanned wing HELIOS. Reducin

As a sub-project of developing a solar powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), two constraints are imposed on this project: the guidance law must be implemented onboard, and the power is limited. In this research an ARM architecture processor is introduced to generate the guidance command for attitude control onboard. The so-called “Carrot chasing” is selected as the guidance law, and the optimal level turn is employed to realize carrot chasing in order to satisf

The energy resources of the proposed UAV are solar panel and lithium battery. The electrical power is converted from solar energy by solar panels during the day and the excess power is charging and saving in batteries. The discharging mode is operated when the solar power is low in comparison to the UAV load under sunlight weakened or at night. Physical characteristics of the PV voltage and current are non-linear relationship. The maxim

This study focuses on reducing the structure weight as well as enhancing stability of maneuverability and environmental tolerance without comprising aerodynamic characteristics. The effects of configuration parameters and installation arrangement of the closed wing designed under different operational conditions have been discussed in detail for the aerodynamic performance. The need to adopt new techniques and practices in the Aerospace Industry branch is a consequence of technological development. The present work aims to study the use of solar power as a main energy source in the aviation, in this case for a flight of long endurance of an unmanned air vehicle. This master thesis follows on previous works of the LEEUAV, where it was done the design and construction of a long endurance unmanned aerial system. Thus, the main objective of this work is the systems integration, flight testing and concepts validation. LEEUAV, a prototype of 4.5 meters’ wingspan

The goal of this project is to design and create the structure of a long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using solar power. The design’s main requirement was the creation of a low weight structure to handle diverse missions with a 1 Kilogram of payload. The UAV structure was divided in three parts: fuselage, empennages and empennage support, designed using CATIA® to verify interfaces and to study the positioning of the systems access and functionality. Because the main target is to build a low weight structure, the carbon fibre and wood were chosen for the fuselage, empennage support a
