Full textThe special need of a sustainable energy supply in mind the technologies of the renewable source solar energy, especially photovoltaics (PV) is main subject of the present thesis. Using the inexhaustible, clean and “freely delievered” power from the sun solar devices may play a major role in a cleaner future, but, on the other hand, they are still energy consuming and expensive in their production which consequently demands a whole life cycle perspective when assessing this technology. For a closer look at PV the methodology of Environmental Life Cycle Costing (ELCC) is introduced by following three theoretical points of view. Namely these are sustainability, life cycle thinking and the three dimensional nature of this tool by regarding environmental, economic and technical aspects in their interaction. Based on theoretical elements of Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing in combination with the technical background of photovoltaics main requirements and steps for performing an ELCC for PV are described. By executing software based content analysis the defined framework is checked (and modified) against a choice of 135 existing studies analyzing the life cycle of PV technologies from an environmental or economic perspective. As a result the main elements of an ELCC for PV, e.g. environmental impact categories and economic indicators, are identified (methodological feedback). Within the next step the existing studies are rated by their “quality” regarding the environmental, economic and more general parts of an ELCC for PV in order to create an inventory of life cycle studies for PV. This inventory is structured by technologies as well as quality of content respecting ELCC and might be used for further analyses. At this stage the results propose the possibility of a first estimate of the present status of ELCC for PV: until now there is a good pool of existing analyses of the life cycle of PV systems. But from an ELCC perspective the examination of common hot spots and trade offs between economic and environmental aspects should be expanded. The theoretical framework of ELCC for PV, the encoded studies and the inventory of life cycle analyses for PV are now the starting point for further analyses, especially of the individual outcome within studies, which will then pose a benchmark for new life cycle studies of PV technology

Full textThe volatile energy supply by solar cells for wireless sensor nodes causes vast challenges for the energy management of such systems. Conditioned by seasonal and short time effects, the incoming power continuously varies. Simultaneously a reliable and constant function of the system has to be realized. To reconcile this, a model for the expected incoming solar power has been derived, which enables the estimation of the planned energy curve. This curve can be compared with the real progression of incoming power measured in parallel, to determine the current state of energy of a sensor node. This comparison is used to derive decision criteria for the control of the energy distribution or operating conditions. Within this work, the physical backgrounds for the modelling of the incoming solar energy and the state of the art of modelling solar power are described. A model is chosen as basis for further investigations and adapted to the limited hardware of wireless sensor nodes. The main challenges are the reduced processing power, few data memory in the system and the objective to consume as few energy as possible for the calculation. The results show that an adapted model can be implemented on wireless sensor systems and that it is executable despite the heavy limitations. This enables a distinct improvement of the distribution of energy across the day, which results in a constant systems function, despite the varying incoming power. At the same time the reliability and failure safety are being improved and the oversizing of the solar cell and the storage elements can be reduced. Therefore the model based energy management is an important component for a stable power supply of wireless sensor systems

Full textThe author of the exam thesis „Das Desertec Projekt und der Arabisch-Frankophone Maghreb am Beispiel Marokko“ discusses various important cultural aspects of the implementation of the mega-project Desertec in the francophone area of North Africa. In this thesis, the author puts the advantages presented by the Desertec Foundation into perspective and discusses possible impediments from a cultural point of view. The first part of the paper covers the topics of solar powered drinking water abstraction as a possibility to meet local needs and Desertec as a promoter of social stability and economic development in the MENA region. The second part is concerned with a discussion of alleged neo-colonial intentions of the companies supporting the Desertec project as well as its management. Moreover, the author discusses the communication strategy of the project and the influence of intercultural aspects on the success of the Desertec vision. Furthermore, the thesis contains a review on press reactions on the topic in the period of 2009 – 2012 and a brief location study discussing the topic of terrorism and corruption in the Maghreb region. The author comes to the conclusion that a mega-project like Desertec cannot solely rely on economic facts and engineering ingenuity, but has to take all cultural points into account and make use of the synergetic effect in order to lead this project to success

Full textThe application of short-term multi-water storage of different temperature levels with the integration of solar thermal and other heat sources for different temperature consumers is still not widely used today. So far, hardly any short-term multi-water storage has been studied for industrial applications in combination with a solar thermal system and a heat recovery as well as other heat sources. In this thesis, a simulation for possible implementation of several hot and/or warm water reservoirs, in which the water quantities are variable, is carried out for different applications. The shortterm multi-storage system is not only considered as water storage but also as heat distribution of several heat sources and heat consumers. The calculations assess the short-term multi-storage system from an energy point of view. Thereby, the considerations for several case studies for comparison with the city of Chemnitz, Germany and the city Homs, Syria will be carried out exemplarily. The arrangements and thermal insulation of storage elements as well as the connections between the containers in the storage system have also been investigated. The simulations are based on a program in MATLAB, which consists of several subroutines to simplify the calculation. One and two-dimensional matrices are used. The results of the energetic investigations show a potential increase of the solar energy yield and other available heat sources as well as savings of conventional energy consumption.

Normally metallic films are required for solar energy and display related coatings. To increase the absorbing efficiency or contrast, it is necessary to apply an antireflection coating (ARC) on the metal substrate. However, the design of a metal substrate is very different from the design of a dielectric substrate, since the optical constant of metallic thin film is very dependent on its thickness and microstructure. In this study, we design and fabricate ARCs on Al substrates using SiO2 and Nb2O5 as the dielectric materials and Nb for the metal films. It had the following metal-dielectric structure: air/SiO2 /Nb/ SiO2/Al , air/SiO2/Nb2O5/Nb/Nb2O5/Al. A total thickness is less than 20% than only using a low refractive index material for the dielectric layer, the average reflection is below 0.4% from 400-700nm, which is much thinner than the typical printed absorber. In this study, we obtain an average reflection for the solar absorber of less than 1% and a total absorbance of about 99% from 400-1800 nm. In addition, we also successfully fabricated an OLED device on PI substrate composed of the ARC film and a highly reflective cavity. The total luminance reflectance RD of the measured device is less than 5%. The RD of the untreated device is about 80%, 16 times higher than treated device.
