Abstract:
Customer reviews are an essential resource to reduce an online product’s uncertainty, which has been shown to be a critical factor for its purchase decision. Existing e-commerce platforms typically ask users to write free-form text reviews, which are sometimes augmented by a small set of predefined questions, e.g. “rate the product description’s accuracy from 1 to 5.” In this paper, we argue that this “passive” style of review solicitation is suboptimal in achieving low-uncertainty “review profiles” for products. Its key drawback is that some product aspects receive a very large number of reviews while other aspects do not have enough reviews to draw confident conclusions. Therefore, we hypothesize that we can achieve lower-uncertainty review profiles by carefully selecting which aspects users are asked to rate. To test this hypothesis, we propose various techniques to dynamically select which aspects to ask users to rate given the current review profile of a product. We use Bayesian inference principles to define reasonable review profile uncertainty measures; specifically, via an aspect’s rating variance. We compare our proposed aspect selection techniques to several baselines on several review profile uncertainty measures. Experimental results on two real-world datasets show that our methods lead to better review profile uncertainty compared to aspect selection baselines and traditional passive review solicitations. Moreover, we present and evaluate a hybrid solicitation method that combines the advantages of both active and passive review solicitations.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess the online sexual solicitation and interactions of minors with adults in order to document the extent of this problem. The questionnaire was constructed in four phases: (a) a review of the previous literature; (b) interviews with convicted online child-sex offenders; (c) a review of the questionnaire items by experts; and (d) a pilot study of the questionnaire administered to adolescents. The validation sample consisted of 2,731 minors (12-15 years old, 50.6% girls). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure. The first factor, called “sexual solicitation,” included items referring to sexual requests from an adult to a minor. The second factor, termed “sexualized interactions,” included items indicating an adult groomed a minor with the purpose of committing a sexual offense. Of participants, 12.6% reported sexual solicitations, and 7.9% reported sexualized interactions. These findings open possible directions for research on the characteristics and consequences of online sexual solicitation and abusive interactions.

Abstract:
We conducted a natural field experiment to further our understanding of the economics of charity. Using direct mail solicitations to over 50,000 prior donors of a nonprofit organization, we tested the effectiveness of a matching grant on charitable giving. We find that the match offer increases both the revenue per solicitation and the response rate. Larger match ratios (i.e., $3:$1 and $2:$1) relative to a smaller match ratio ($1:$1) had no additional impact, however. The results provide avenues for future empirical and theoretical work on charitable giving, cost-benefit analysis, and the private provision of public goods. (JEL D64, L31)

Abstract:
The positive effect of touching on compliance with a request has been widely reported in the social psychology literature. However its effect on blood donation has never been tested. Yet, research found that many further compliance gaining procedures were not efficient with blood donation requests. University students were solicited to give blood during a special one-day drive. Solicitations were made through face-to-face interactions. During the solicitation some participants were lightly touched or not on the forearm. No difference was found between the two experimental groups in the number of participants who agreed to give blood. Such results show that tactile contact is not an effective technique for increasing compliance with a blood donation request, and confirm previous studies which found that other compliance-growth techniques are not effective with blood donation requests. However, if was found that, compared to previous blood campaigns conducted in the same setting, more blood donations were observed attesting that face to face solicitation of potential blood donors significantly increased donations.

Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to determine and describe the roles of persons other than professional development staff in the solicitation of major gifts from private individuals for selected senior colleges and universities as perceived by senior development officers. The activities of four groups of nondevelopment staff, trustees, president/chancellor, private citizens, and nondevelopment staff/faculty, were examined through the four steps of the major gift solicitation process: identification and rating, cultivation, the in person solicitation, and the thank-you process following the gift. The population encompassed all accredited, degree granting four year colleges and universities in the United States which solicit major gifts from private individuals. The sample consisted of the 223 schools which had received one or more gifts of one million dollars or more from private individuals as reported in Giving USA. Philanthronin Digest, or The Chronicle of Higher Education, between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 1987. The research instrument was a mailed questionnaire which was sent to the Chief Development Officer of the 223 schools in the sample. Replies were received from 162 institutions, for a response rate of 72.7%. Examination of the results of this study indicated that the services of nondevelopment personnel were used in the major gift solicitation process at the vast majority of schools in the United States, that over half of the major gift dollars solicited were attributable to the efforts of these individuals, and that the president/chancel lor was the most important advocate for an institution's development program followed by the trustees, private citizens, and finally the nondevelopment staff/faculty. Further examination of the data revealed specific determinants which a senior development officer should, for different nondevelopment groups, weigh more or less heavily when deciding which individual(s) will have the greatest likelihood of being influential with major donor prospects.

Full text
Abstract:
Parental investment to increase survivability of the young is often optimised by signalling emitted by the young and informing the parents of their level of need. In this thesis, we explored whether the behaviour of ant larvae could be analysed as food solicitations as defined by honest communication models. Indeed, ants are highly social and their social relations differ from the social relation in parent-offspring systems which is usually analysed for food solicitations. We therefore tested, in the ant Ectatomma tuberculatum, whether behaviour of the larvae was correlated with the level of need and if workers provisioned larvae with food according to the intensity of the signal, as predicted by honest signalling models. We showed in this thesis that movements displayed by the larvae as well as a larval volatile emission could influence food provisioning by workers. Larval movements increase with larval developmental stage and volatile emission vary with nutritional state of the larvae. Nurse and forager workers could then optimise food resources allocation inside the nest thanks to signals or cues from the larvae. However, we also show that several other proximal factors are involved. Larval movements are not freely displayed but follow a contact with a worker, and spatial organisation of workers and larvae influences larval movements and food provisioning. Thus we propose alternative or complementary hypotheses to the communication hypothesis

Abstract:
The scope of this project includes a re-engineering of the internal architecture of the Solicitation Management System (SMS), a web-based application that facilitates the running of grant proposal solicitations for the Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB). A goal of the project is to increase consistency and efficiency of the code base of the system, making it easier to understand, maintain, and extend. The previous version of SMS was written to rely on the Spring and Hibernate frameworks. The project includes a restructuring of the system to remove reliance on the Spring framework, but maintain reliance on Hibernate. The result is an updated version of the SMS. The system was written using current technologies such as Java, JSP, and CSS.

Martinez, Luis A. "Neural Regulation of Sexual Solicitation in Female Syrian Hamsters: Role of Oxytocin." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2013. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/neurosci_diss/8.

Full text
Abstract:
In most animal species, reproductive success depends critically on precopulatory or solicitational behaviors that occur prior to mating. The specific sensory systems and behavioral strategies employed in precopulatory behaviors vary across species; in all cases, however, animals must be able to identify potential mating partners and solicit sexual interest. Female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) engage in multiple forms of precopulatory behaviors that are preferentially expressed to males or their odors, including vaginal scent marking and sexual odor preference. Conspecific odors relevant for precopulatory behaviors are processed by a network of forebrain areas that includes the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and the medial preoptic area (MPOA). The precise functional and neurochemical mechanisms whereby these areas regulate the expression of precopulatory behaviors, however, are unknown. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation is to address the following research questions: (1) Is the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT), acting within BNST or MPOA, necessary for the normal expression of odor-guided precopulatory behaviors? (2) Is BNST or (3) MPOA required for the preferential expression of vaginal marking or investigation towards male odors?, and (4) Does OT interact with social odor processing to regulate vaginal marking? We found that blockade of OT receptors (OTRs) in MPOA and BNST decreased vaginal marking to male odors. There was no effect of OTR blockade on sexual odor preference. Selective lesions of BNST also disrupted preferential vaginal marking responses to male odors, without affecting sexual odor preference. In contrast, lesions of MPOA disrupted odor preference without affecting vaginal marking responses. Finally, central blockade of OTRs eliminated the normal pattern of increased activation of neurons to male vs. female odors in BNST, but not MPOA. Considered together, these results suggest that OT normally acts within BNST to drive preferential vaginal marking responses to male odors via selective facilitation of neural responses to these odors, and further, that there are separate and distinct neural circuits that regulate different forms of odor-guided precopulatory behaviors in females.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the so-called SSDI technique which is a semi-passive approach developed to address the problem of structural vibration damping. This technique takes advantage of an original non-linear processing of the voltage generated by piezoelements. It was shown that the original control law corresponding to the SSDI technique was optimal in the case of mono-modal solicitations. In the case of wide band multi-modal solicitation it is not ever true. This paper proposes a novel multi-modal control law for the SSDI technique. It is based on a probabilistic description of the piezovoltage and results in an optimization of the energy dissipated in the nonlinear device connected to the piezoelectric elements.

The problem is especially accute in mixing zones, like T-junctions, where large differences in water temperature between the two inlets and high levels of turbulence can lead to large temperature fluctuations at the wall. Until recently, studies on the matter had been tackled at EDF using steady methods: the fluid flow was solved with a CFD code using an averaged turbulence model, which led to the knowledge of the mean temperature and temperature variance at each point of the wall. But, being based on averaged quantities, this method could not reproduce the unsteady and 3D effects of the problem, like phase lag in temperature oscillations between two points, which can generate important stresses. Benefiting from advances in computer power and turbulence modelling, a new methodology is now applied, that allows to take these effects into account. The CFD tool Code_Saturne, developped at EDF, is used to solve the fluid flow using an unsteady L.E.S. approach. It is coupled with the thermal code Syrthes, which propagates the temperature fluctuations into the wall thickness. The instantaneous temperature field inside the wall can then be extracted and used for structure mechanics computations (mainly with EDF thermomechanics tool Code_Aster, see joint paper [1]). The purpose of this paper is to present the application of this methodology to the simulation of a straight T-junction mockup, similar to the Residual Heat Remover (RHR) junction found in N4 type PWR nuclear plants, and designed to study thermal striping and cracks propagation. The results are generally in good agreement with the measurements; yet, in certain areas of the flow, progress is still needed in L.E.S. modelling and in the treatment of instantaneous heat transfer at the wall.

Abstract:
In previous papers, we suggested piezo-actuators models and compared them to existing works with respect to sinusoidal solicitations. The current paper aims to experimentally validate and refine them. For this purpose, the piezo-device is integrated in a well known system. This reveals that the modeling of the whole system requires additional artefact and good choice of simulation methods. Then we study the whole system dynamics in order to check the validity of our models. Thereafter, the final model is reversed in order to elaborate control loops in smart applications.

Abstract:
Abstract As part of a large study on oil drilling vibrations involving, theory, laboratory tests and development of computer code, the present paper focuses on the effects of the tangential solicitations on the lateral behavior of a rod, representative of drillstring. The lateral behavior of the drillstring is governed by time-varying parameter equations. The torsion-lateral and longitudinal-lateral couplings are both experimentally and numerically studied and particular attention is paid to lateral instabilities. The effect of the curvature of the rod, mud, stabilisers and rotation are taken into account.

Abstract:
Academic entities have the ability to assemble resources and form ‘local labs’ able to creatively address complex technical problems. This paper describes academic partnerships with professional practice that offer responsive materials design expertise not available in many architectural firms. The following projects are funded by grants, gifts, and consultation mechanisms with architectural firms during the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and the Request for Proposals (RFP) phase in competitive design solicitations. The RFQ and the RFP mechanisms are high-value low-risk means for architectural firms to add research and development capabilities to their project team. Example are given of two collaborative projects that have brought practice-based research to the architectural office and brought practical experience to students.

Abstract:
Recent designs in the Solar Decathlon have incorporated solar electric modules with heat capture. Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB) solicitations through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have recently awarded photovoltaic / thermal (PV/T) projects incorporating air and fluid based heat transfer mediums. This paper introduces the PV/T collector with a quick history of four different research and development projects starting with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1978. Suggestions for engineering design and performance guidelines are provided. A demonstration of a zero glazed thin film amorphous silicon photovoltaic module with air as the fluid transfer medium, captured off the backside, is presented. The paper provides suggestions on applications and appropriate environments for various PV/T collector types.
