Abstract:
Customer reviews are an essential resource to reduce an online product’s uncertainty, which has been shown to be a critical factor for its purchase decision. Existing e-commerce platforms typically ask users to write free-form text reviews, which are sometimes augmented by a small set of predefined questions, e.g. “rate the product description’s accuracy from 1 to 5.” In this paper, we argue that this “passive” style of review solicitation is suboptimal in achieving low-uncertainty “review profiles” for products. Its key drawback is that some product aspects receive a very large number of reviews while other aspects do not have enough reviews to draw confident conclusions. Therefore, we hypothesize that we can achieve lower-uncertainty review profiles by carefully selecting which aspects users are asked to rate. To test this hypothesis, we propose various techniques to dynamically select which aspects to ask users to rate given the current review profile of a product. We use Bayesian inference principles to define reasonable review profile uncertainty measures; specifically, via an aspect’s rating variance. We compare our proposed aspect selection techniques to several baselines on several review profile uncertainty measures. Experimental results on two real-world datasets show that our methods lead to better review profile uncertainty compared to aspect selection baselines and traditional passive review solicitations. Moreover, we present and evaluate a hybrid solicitation method that combines the advantages of both active and passive review solicitations.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess the online sexual solicitation and interactions of minors with adults in order to document the extent of this problem. The questionnaire was constructed in four phases: (a) a review of the previous literature; (b) interviews with convicted online child-sex offenders; (c) a review of the questionnaire items by experts; and (d) a pilot study of the questionnaire administered to adolescents. The validation sample consisted of 2,731 minors (12-15 years old, 50.6% girls). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure. The first factor, called “sexual solicitation,” included items referring to sexual requests from an adult to a minor. The second factor, termed “sexualized interactions,” included items indicating an adult groomed a minor with the purpose of committing a sexual offense. Of participants, 12.6% reported sexual solicitations, and 7.9% reported sexualized interactions. These findings open possible directions for research on the characteristics and consequences of online sexual solicitation and abusive interactions.

Abstract:
We conducted a natural field experiment to further our understanding of the economics of charity. Using direct mail solicitations to over 50,000 prior donors of a nonprofit organization, we tested the effectiveness of a matching grant on charitable giving. We find that the match offer increases both the revenue per solicitation and the response rate. Larger match ratios (i.e., $3:$1 and $2:$1) relative to a smaller match ratio ($1:$1) had no additional impact, however. The results provide avenues for future empirical and theoretical work on charitable giving, cost-benefit analysis, and the private provision of public goods. (JEL D64, L31)

Abstract:
The positive effect of touching on compliance with a request has been widely reported in the social psychology literature. However its effect on blood donation has never been tested. Yet, research found that many further compliance gaining procedures were not efficient with blood donation requests. University students were solicited to give blood during a special one-day drive. Solicitations were made through face-to-face interactions. During the solicitation some participants were lightly touched or not on the forearm. No difference was found between the two experimental groups in the number of participants who agreed to give blood. Such results show that tactile contact is not an effective technique for increasing compliance with a blood donation request, and confirm previous studies which found that other compliance-growth techniques are not effective with blood donation requests. However, if was found that, compared to previous blood campaigns conducted in the same setting, more blood donations were observed attesting that face to face solicitation of potential blood donors significantly increased donations.

Abstract:
Bumper beam absorbs the accidental kinetic energy by deflection in low-speed impact and by deformation in high-speed impact. Based on the last years necessity of lighter materials and safer usage of vehicles we try to come with a new class of materials for bumper systems. Analyze of metallic materials is cheaper when the analyze take place on a computer avoiding the metallic loss or energy consume. We present few results obtained in Catia software about the behavior of some metallic materials under external solicitations in function of the mechanical properties of metallic elements, geometry of the element, restrains and solicitation points. Shape memory alloy are smart materials that can use the external mechanical energy damping to thermal energy in bumper applications. In martensite to austenite domain we observe an increase of damping mechanical capacity with possible applications in bumper systems.

Abstract:
Introduction: Evolving methods of communication have increased public appeals for living organ and hematopoietic stem cell donations from strangers, giving public solicitations more visibility. Within the academic literature, perspectives have been divisive, reflecting ethical justifications for and against appeals for living unrelated donors. Transplant programs and clinicians face a variety of ethical dilemmas when patients and their solicited donors present to the hospital. Objective: A scoping review methodology was designed to (1) explore the academic literature and (2) summarize and disseminate key research findings. Methods: We used the Arksey & O’Malley framework for conducting and reporting scoping reviews and to review the prominent ethical arguments, counterarguments, and policy implications in the literature. From 4616 articles identified through MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycInfo, and CINAHL, we screened titles and abstracts to assess eligibility for full-text review. Results: We retrieved 280 full texts, extracted data from 61, and coded and analyzed 41 papers. Of these, 36 were from or based in the US context. Two articles originated from Canada. Three articles addressed public solicitations of hematopoietic stem cell donation. We mapped themes under 3 major headings related to public solicitations of living unrelated donors for organs and hematopoietic stem cells: (1) interpretations and modes, (2) ethical arguments for and against, and (3) policy implications and suggestions to address challenges for clinical practice. Discussion: The academic literature contains divisive perspectives of public solicitations for organ and hematopoietic stem cell donation, each of which deserves further reflection for implications for policy and practice.

Abstract:
Ceramics have been increasingly used in orthopaedics during the last 30 years. Their biological inertness, high hardness and good mechanical strength make them excellent candidates for components such as femoral heads and acetabular cup in Total Hip Replacement prostheses. Currently used bio-inert ceramics – alumina and zirconia – give good clinical results, especially compared to metal – polymer couplings. However, they are subjected to severe biological, tribological and mechanical solicitations during more than fifteen years for the most successful prostheses. They answer these solicitations by presenting specific degradation mechanisms. We will thus examine the phenomena that can account for the long-term behaviour of zirconia components (heads and cups) in THR prostheses.

Abstract:
Offshore wind energy development has experienced a rapid development over the last few years encouraged by the of carbon reduction policy and the energy mix objectives of several countries worldwide. Nowadays, the offshore projects under investigation are composed of tens to hundreds of units reaching impressive dimensions with total rotor diameters from 150 to 220 meters and production capacity of 5 to 12 MW per turbine. Mechanical analyses have to be performed to validate the design regarding the solicitations it may face during its lifetime (20 years). Because of the high number of solicitation cycles the structure is confronted to, an estimation of the cumulated damage is mandatory and has to be carefully assessed. As presented in standards, this verification requires massive computation investments and is usually a challenging task for project engineers. This paper presents the “MultiSite” extension of the AK-DA numerical strategy (“Adaptive Kriging for Damage Assessment”). After being formalized, an illustration of its behaviour and performances is proposed for the validation of a design regarding its cumulated damages at different locations.

Abstract:
Residents of a small Vermont town received one of four mail solicitations from a statewide charity drive. In one condition, designed to legitimize small contributions, the recipients were reminded at the end of the written appeal that “even a penny will help.” In a second condition, the recipients were told that they, like other residents of their town, were known to be concerned about others and received a small gift to reinforce that “helper” label, a bumper sticker reading “I Help Out.” In a second labeling condition, the recipients were told they were known to be proud of their state and received a bumper sticker to reinforce that label. Those in a control condition received a customary direct mail solicitation. Analysis showed that labeling potential donors as “helpers” did not substantially increase donations. Legitimizing small contributions tended to lower contributions, although the finding was not statistically significant. Techniques that work in other contexts to increase help-giving or compliance with requests must be applied cautiously in the context of direct mail fund-raising.

Abstract:
This study examines social networks and financial giving to charitable or religious causes. Conventional social capital measures of general social trust and size of social network are studied as predictors of charitable giving. To these traditional measures, we add an examination of particular network aspects of giving: ego giving in relation to network alters who give, solicitations to give by network ties, and ego soliciting alters to give. In addition, the study disaggregates alter effects by alter position. Findings indicate that, net of social trust, social network factors significantly predict likelihood of being a giver. In particular, findings are that egos are especially likely to be donors when their primary alter donates. Three configurations of ego–alter giving and solicitations are significant predictors of ego giving, indicating that ego–alter doing matters more than asking. Theoretical contributions for relational and prosocial studies are discussed, as are practical implications for fundraising professionals.

Abstract:
Abstract Classical sexual selection theory predicts that males should mate eagerly, yet blue monkey males often reject females’ sexual invitations. We evaluated how males’ responses to female solicitations related to female characteristics, number of males and conceptive females present, and the male’s recent copulations. Using 12 years of data from a wild population, we found that males accepted only 20% of female solicitations. Odds of acceptance (copulation) increased for conceptive females, for females with whom the male copulated recently, and when fewer males were present. Odds of accepting nulliparous females decreased when more conceptive females were available, consistent with market models. Male responses did not relate to female rank or matings with other females the same day. When males responded negatively, nulliparous females were especially likely to receive aggression vs. mere refusal. Overall, males’ decisions to mate with willing females depended both on female characteristics, especially fertility, and on social context.

Abstract:
This research study explores how children respond to solicitations for updates about their (recent) experiences. Instances of parents soliciting updates from their children were collected from over 30 hours of video-recorded co-present family interactions from 20 different American and Canadian families with at least one child between the ages of 3 and 6. Previous research has documented that caregivers of very young children treat them as being able to disclose about events they have experienced (Kidwell, 2011). In building upon the literature on family communication and parent-child interactions as well as the literature on epistemics, this paper explores the concept of “talking about your day” in everyday co-present family interactions, showing three ways in which parents solicit updates from their children: through report solicitations, tracking inquiries, and asking the child to update someone else. Data are in American and Canadian English.

Abstract:
We present a theory of charitable fund-raising in which it is costly to solicit donors. We fully characterize the solicitation strategy that maximizes donations net of fund-raising costs. It is optimal for the fund-raiser to target only the “net contributors”––donors who would give more than their solicitation costs. We show that as the income inequality increases, so does the level of the public good, despite a (potentially) non-monotonic fund-raising strategy. This implies that costly fund-raising can provide a novel explanation for the non-neutrality of income redistributions and government grants often found in empirical studies.

Abstract:
The piston material choice is a major factor in the design stages of internal combustion engines for its importance to improving the durability and the operation reliability during the piston life cycle. Indeed, even as many researches have been conducted for a long time to improve the piston performances in the diesel engine, considerable numbers of piston damages still significantly occur. This research work is an assessment by the finite element method (FEM) of a set of piston materials for the purpose of being used in a direct injection diesel engine. The main objective is to predict stresses concentrations and the clearance between the piston and the cylinder (to avoid metal-metal adhesion) from thermomechanical solicitations. The stresses and deformations are evaluated in a 3D piston model by using ABAQUS software. A first assessment step is performed in heat convection/conduction modes to determine the temperature distribution. Then, this last one is coupled to the pressure field resulting from the gas combustion in order to compute stresses and the magnitude displacement. The obtained results show that the austenitic steel AS12UNG with fibre-reinforced possess low thermomechanical stress values compared to other material types. This material allows a minimum failure risk and therefore contributes to the enhancement of the piston design.

AbstractToday, many regulators’ operations publish information derived from registration and reporting by charitable organizations and commercial fundraising firms. Similar publication is found in a variety of situations – restaurant sanitation notices and hospital re-infection rates, among many others. Recent scholarship has explored the theory of regulatory disclosure, identifying how required disclosures can influence organizational behavior and potentially improve public welfare. An important feature of this theory is the “action cycle,” in which a requirement to disclose information about a process or product shapes consumers’ choices, in turn inducing suppliers to modify their behavior in a desired direction. In this paper, we sketch briefly three widespread approaches that have at different times characterized the regulators’ efforts, describe some of the inherent difficulties that regulators, whether independent or governmental, will encounter in connection with charitable activities, and explore the potential for constraining or eliminating abusive practices by required public disclosure of related information.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the discourse concerning the assimilation of Muslim minorities in the United States and suggests that calls for assimilation are solicitations for a form of self-renunciation and sacrifice. Yet such solicitations occur against the economic and political background of neoliberalism, in which all citizens are asked to make sacrifices for the sake of economic health. How does one read, then, the discourse of Muslim assimilation in light of the psychological, political, and economic realities of neoliberalism? The article explores the transformation of the so-called Jewish question into the contemporary concern with the “Muslim problem.” Drawing on Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s reflections on the affinities between capitalism and fascism (especially their reading of Odysseus), as well as Sigmund Freud’s reflections on narcissism and group psychology, the article analyzes the figure of the sacrificial victim in the context of neoliberalism’s authoritarian tendencies and argues that sacrificial figuration allows us to think past the polarizations (West/rest; Trump supporters/Muslims) of our contemporary historical moment.

Abstract:
The emergence of conceptive and non-conceptive sexual behaviours in mature individuals can be traced back to immature socio-sexual behavioural patterns. We tested the ‘needing-to-learn hypothesis’ in the development of sexual behaviours in the immature male Japanese macaques of Arashiyama, Japan. This hypothesis holds that juvenility serves to provide young individuals with a period in which to practice adult male-like sexual and socio-sexual behaviours and partner choice. Our cross-sectional focal data on mounting behaviour and partner choice in juvenile males (1–3 years) supported most of our predictions: (1) as they became older and learnt more effective patterns of sexual solicitations, juvenile males performed more demonstrative solicitations and less non-demonstrative solicitations, (2) the frequency of mounts performed by juvenile males increased with age and converged on a frequency of mounts typical of adult males, (3) the frequency of mounts reflecting underachievement (i.e., improperly oriented mounts and single/no foot-clasp mounts) decreased as juvenile males became older, (4) the double foot-clasp mounting posture became gradually more common in juvenile males over time, while other mounting postures became less common and (5) from two to three years old, the frequency of males’ sexual mounts directed to adult females increased. Such timelines of gradual increase in the frequency of effective adult-like behavioural patterns and gradual decrease in the frequency of less effective immature behavioural patterns are consistent with the ‘needing-to-learn hypothesis’ emphasizing the role of age and practice in the progressive acquisition of adult-like sexual behaviour, mounting skills, and partner age choice during male juvenility.

This paper shows how it is possible to characterize and quantify the damages in materials using classical tools of automatic image analysis. Examples presented concern ceramic matrix composites, i.e. high tech materials. It gives important information to support the deformation and rupture mechanism of materials under mechanical solicitations.

AbstractThe presence of overwhelming amounts of information in our big-data era society is growing. Globalisation is increasingly giving these solicitations (regarding information) a more social aspect causing behavioural changes. While restricting my focus on this aspect of the Bentley et al article, I address related medical questions and pin-point the conceptual interest of the roadmap given therein.

Abstract:
An exploratory study of 138 young adults examined the relationship between personal vulnerability and attitudes toward intrusive direct marketing practices. Analyses indicated that perceived inability to prevent direct marketers from obtaining and using personal information was related to negative attitudes toward such solicitations. Resentment about intrusive marketing was positively related to the perceived need to protect vulnerable populations from such tactics.

Abstract:
The use of bio-based materials such as hemp concrete in the field of construction allows limiting environmental impacts and improving the energy performances of buildings. The aim of this paper is to understand the influence of adsorption and desorption of moisture in hemp concrete on its internal morphology and its dimensional variations. That’s why, the high porosity and the adsorption capacity of hemp concrete were discussed. Then, an experimental cell was developed to follow the geometric evolution over time of hemp concrete microstructure under hydric solicitations: humidification and drying. The digital image correlation was used to determine the strains fields on the surface of the material. This technique showed the behavior of this hygroscopic material subjected to different hygrometries. Indeed, the hemp shiv undergoes larger strains than the binder, thus affecting the morphology of hemp concrete. The results obtained highlighted the influence of the hydric state of hemp concrete on its very heterogeneous microstructure. It has also been revealed that the durability of the material can be affected by the dimensional variations caused by the relative humidity variations.
