Abstract:
We examine whether the widespread adoption of mobile technology is associated with changes in core social networks over the main decade of mobile diffusion in India. We focus primarily on network size, as well as the type and location of relationships. Grounded in interaction ritual theory, Ling’s bounded solidarity thesis suggests that mobile communication may reconfigure social bonds, leading to a focus on family and friends over workmates and acquaintances, as well as more local networks. This study analyses data from three waves of data (2002–2013) from the state of Kerala. Our key finding

ABSTRACT: This study describes the results of a social analysis of mutual aid solidarity during Nigeria's #EndSARSprotests against Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) brutality in Nigeria. The results reveal that the protests achieved success with the assistance of mutual aid solidarity networks. Yet there is a dearth of literature exploring the reasons for this accomplishment. Nigeria is a country where everything done usually has a religious coloration and interpretation; however, the 2020 mutual aid solidarity in the #EndSARS protests proved otherwise. Using in-depth interviews, data were eli

What role does difference play in relationships between partners in solidarity? In this article we add to debates on difference-in-solidarity by proposing fascinance as a critical aspect of intersubjective relations in solidarity networks. We build upon extant feminist and affect theory scholarship in doing so. Our novel approach is informed by our analysis of in-depth empirical data from a special case of solidarity – whistleblowing advocacy groups – and by Bracha Ettinger’s concept of the matrixial borderspace. Whistleblower support is a critical factor in enabling disclosures about organisa

The article is devoted to the role of social networks in modern society. The genre of Internet commentary as solidarity and conflict is considered, the strategy of trolling and faming is presented. The role of mediation in community administration is analyzed. The principles of mediation, which must be adhered to by a public administrator, are proposed to maintain an impartial community that is free from communicative conflicts between its users and participants. In addition, the authors analyze the goals and results of the use of social networks by their administrators and users.

Despite its central importance, solidarity is seldom analysed in a comprehensive manner. The majority of related studies target only specific aspects of its complex mechanisms, such as the functioning of redistributive systems; the related values; the private networks of care; or the civil society. Our study aims at providing a comprehensive analysis by understanding solidarity as a field in Bourdieu’s sense: it involves supportive interactions; competition for the related symbolic capital; illusions providing legitimate frames of deservingness and respectability; and divergent habitus dependi

By examining the discourse of hope and resistance in Imbolo Mbue’s How Beautiful We Were (2021), which portrays the emergence of a solidarity movement and protest in a fictional West African country, this article engages with the theory of political solidarity within the framework of contemporary African necropolitics. The acts of resistance carried out by the protagonists against their government, which exposes them to death at the hands of Western neocolonialism, show the capacity of the African oppressed majority to work together for an improvement in their living conditions in a spirit of

Calls for interventionist research in academic disciplines, including science and technology studies (STS), are increasingly common. Yet none offer insights for what to do or whom to turn to after a researcher has intervened and the result is slander, defaming, or disenfranchisement—even though these are possible, and even likely, results of intervening in controversies and power struggles. Drawing from the ethics and methods used in direct action activism, I argue that intentional networks of care and solidarity are necessary supports that need to be in place before we call for interventionis
