Abstract:
The study aims to reveal politeness strategies used in natural interaction within a particular community group. The article analyses excerpts from audio recordings of conversations of teenage male friends. The chosen interactional approach relies on Goffman’s notion of face and Brown and Levinson’s model of linguistic politeness, ethnographic methods of collecting data, and conversation analysis. The case study continues the discussion of gender and age aspects of politeness realization and communication styles. The article reveals the following interactional solidarity strategies: teasing and group jokes, where participants add details to exaggerate the comic effect; ritual insults, in particular making up nicknames; synchronized speech pacing, even leading to creating spontaneous poetry. In the case of a request, the following politeness strategies and means are noted: repetition of words, both literal and with variations; increasing the volume and varying the speech rate, which express the common emotional state; decreasing the imposition with lexical means, markers of in-group identity; friend’s supporting through an offer and a jokily threat, language game (rhyming and deliberate mispronouncing), politeness marker "please" and its slang equivalent “pazhe”, minimizing the degree of a favour; using markers of group identity (“brother”), offering help and threating jokingly, using puns (rhyme and deliberate change of the phonetic form of a word), and increasing volume and prosodic emphasis that express an emotional state. Participants experiment with communicative strategies, sometimes pushing the degree of their expression to the edge and turning it into a performance. Applying the solidarity strategies in a more expressive and playful way seems to be a feature of the adolescent communication style. The data analysed reveals the local, cultural (and supposedly age) specifics of employing the universal face-saving mechanism of the communication.

Abstract:
This article argues that, in the face of worsening conditions from climate change, enhanced border enforcement, a growing wealth gap, housing crises, and policing, social movements should focus on expanding mutual aid strategies. Mutual aid projects directly address survival needs, mobilize large numbers of people to participate in movements actively rather than solely participating online or through voting, and offer spaces to practice new social relations. The article looks at examples from efforts for migrant justice, police and prison abolition, disaster relief, and other contemporary struggles and discusses potential pitfalls of mutual aid strategies, such as supplementing and therefore stabilizing existing systems of maldistribution and adopting principles and practices from the charity frameworks that proliferate in capitalism.

Abstract:
The transition from Fordist manufacturing to the so-called knowledge economy confronts organized labor across the advanced market economies with a new and more difficult landscape. Many scholars have suggested that the future of egalitarian capitalism depends on forging new political coalitions that bridge the interests of workers in the “new” and “old” economies. This article explores current trajectories of change in Denmark and Sweden, two countries that are still seen as embodying a more egalitarian model of capitalism. The authors show that labor unions in these countries are pursuing two quite different strategies for achieving social solidarity—the Danish aimed at equality of opportunity and the Swedish aimed at equality of outcomes. The article examines the origins of these different strategic paths and explores the distinctive distributional outcomes they have produced. The conclusion draws out the broad lessons these cases hold for the choices currently confronting labor movements throughout the advanced industrial world.

Abstract:
Communication has an important role in a community to support high solidarity between members. But not all communities know what things can build solidarity between members. Therefore, administrators in the community think about how to build solidarity within the group, how to keep the group members afloat, and also how to maintain group members so that they still have a family attitude and also care for one another. Of course in this community, some members are chosen to be community administrators, and changed every year. Some of these members have roles as chairperson, public relations officer, and treasurer. The role of a chairperson includes many things, managing members, organizing events, looking for useful information for the community and also building cohesiveness within the community. The communication process that takes place in ICON uses the Laswell communication model which is one-way, i.e. the community leader gives direction to community members directly or through WhatsApp group media. The approach used in this research is descriptive-qualitative and with the case study method. The research subject in this study was ICON. While the object of research in this study is the communication process in forming solidarity that is used by ICON in increasing solidarity within groups and also building a good image in the eyes of the community. Data collected by interview, documentation, and literature study. The conclusion of this study is that ICON uses communication strategies in the form of publications, events, community participation, CSR. In addition, to build the solidarity of its members, ICON often holds touring, Sunday morning rides, and kopdar. Abstract:
This paper delves deeply into the pivotal role that solidarity journalism plays in shaping media discourse, particularly during times of wartime and crisis, with a central focus on its profound impact during the course of Russia's war on Ukraine. By conducting a thorough investigation into the multi-dimensional aspects of solidarity journalism, this study delves into the intricate strategies media outlets employ to utilize various indicators of solidarity. These strategies are deployed not only to foster collective stress resistance, but also to provide essential psychological support to audiences during periods of upheaval. The paper emphasizes the importance of media's portrayal of prosocial behaviors and positive micro-moments, which collectively contribute to the reinforcement of resilience within communities when they are facing challenging circumstances. To contextualize its findings, the paper offers a detailed analysis of the specific case of Russia's war on Ukraine. In doing so, it underscores the instrumental role that media solidarity plays in empowering the communities directly affected by such conflicts. By leveraging solidarity journalism's inherent capacity to foster unity and resilience, media outlets can significantly contribute to mitigating the often-negative effects of fear-laden narratives during times of wartime. The article presents the findings of a pilot study of President Wolodymir Zelensky’s solidarity discourse. They illustrate the use of salient linguistic means and discursive strategies of solidarity building in the light of the Russian military attack on Ukraine in 2022. Based on discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, the study focuses on the linguistic patterns of constituting inclusivity through personal deixis. This is complemented by the mapping of an overarching discursive strategy of the construction of togetherness, namely proximization. Conducted from the perspective of the solidarity leader, the research identifies the above strategies as crucial to shaping political support by developing a community of shared values and experiences.

Abstract:
Abstract COVID-19 and its social and political consequences have led to increased attention to the sometimes philosophically neglected concept of solidarity. This paper reflects the discourse on solidarity in times of COVID-19 from the viewpoint of the philosophical debate on solidarity. We argue that currently – regarding this debate – the critical potential of solidarity as a political concept is often undermined. Solidarity should rather be used as a social-diagnostic lens to focus on and criticise problematic exclusions caused by current political developments. This applies especially to the cross-border and transnational dimension of political solidarity, which is often neglected in the national constrictions of political COVID-19 strategies. The paper concludes with observations on which levels and in which directions the reflection on solidarity could stimulate both the political and the philosophical debate on global crises such as COVID-19.

Abstract:
The 2019 Simultaneous General Election was the first election joined by the Indonesia Solidarity Party (Partai Solidaritas Indonesia or popular as PSI) to compete. In the domain of the Regional House of Representatives, the party won the most seats in the Province of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta compared to other provinces that were won by the PSI. This study aims to determine the efforts and strategies used by the Indonesia Solidarity Party, especially in the Province of Jakarta, as well as the image that was generated during the 2019 Simultaneous General Election to the public so that they could win the most seats of the Regional House of Representatives from all other provinces. This study focuses on the realm of political communication and uses the 4Ps political marketing theory (product, promotion, price, place) which was adapted from the marketing theory by Firmanzah. This study also uses a qualitative approach with case study method. The results of the research found that Jakarta Indonesia Solidarity Party focused more on candidates’ campaigns rather than promoting the party as an institution. The use of digital media as a means of promotion during the campaign period was also carried out by the Indonesia Solidarity Party, but conventional methods such as the usage of banners, blusukan (face to face visit) activities, and the distribution of merchandise to the public were also carried out in the context of political marketing by Jakarta Indonesia Solidarity Party. Abstract:
Abstract The principle of solidarity is embedded in the foundations of the European Union (eu) legal system and is integral to the very ethos that has made the Union possible. However, as Member States struggle with contemporary challenges such as high migration flows, terrorism and economic turmoil they have predominantly adopted individualist and protectionist strategies which undermine the character of the Union. Those strategies include, for instance, building walls and securitising internal borders. This contribution argues that solidarity is inextricably linked with responsibility. Solidarity gives rise to responsibility and is a desired consequence of responsibility. Thus, this work suggests that strengthening the binomial of solidarity/responsibility is the solution that will create effective practices in meeting the humanitarian needs of refugees and sharing burdens between Member States. The contribution analyses the eu’s commitment to solidarity/responsibility and calls for Member States to demonstrate their commitment. Three types of Member State solidarity/responsibility are identified: 1) towards refugees and migrants, 2) towards fellow countries and 3) towards the eu itself. The latter finds its legal foundation in the principle of ‘sincere cooperation’ as enshrined in Article 4 (3) teu and constitutes a means of protecting collective interest and precluding unilateral Member State actions that might jeopardize the entire eu project.

Abstract:
We examine working-class race relations during two steel industry unionization efforts: the 1919 AFL drive and the 1937 CIO drive. Racial conflict divided steel workers in 1919 but interracial labor solidarity prevailed in 1937. We contrast the two drives using event-structure analysis (ESA) to highlight the imputed causal connections in our argument. Comparison of the 1919 and 1937 cases suggests that three developments were necessary for interracial solidarity in steel. First, industrial unions had to replace craft unions, which promoted class-oriented organizing strategies. Second, interracial solidarity required an easing of split labor market conditions. Third, unions had to incorporate concrete strategies to recruit black workers. In both cases, state actions and economic conditions mediated the impact of these factors on interracial organizing.

Abstract:
The Finnish service sector trade union Palvelualojen ammattiliitto or Service Union United has the largest amount of migrant members of all Finnish trade unions. It walks the narrow line between defending the perceived interests of its members from the ‘threat’ of labour immigration, and simultaneously trying to act as an immigrant-friendly force. This qualitative case study analyses the outcomes of the union’s strategies in questions related to immigration. The outcomes affect different immigrant groups in a different manner. Furthermore, the established quasi-state character of the Finnish trade union movement affects both the strengths and weaknesses of its strategies. The politicized anti-immigration views in the Finnish society indirectly to some degree impact trade union strategies. Results suggest that the lay distinction between ‘us’ and ‘them’ based on nationality still shapes trade union strategy in a way that can be labeled selective solidarity.

Abstract:
Abstract While scholars in the sociolinguistics of aging have shown that communication in eldercare is characterized by the predominance of infantilizing speech or elderspeak, sajiao, a self-infantilizing speech, has not been examined in this context. Further, current research on sajiao has focused primarily on young women. How sajiao is used in intergenerational communication involving adults and older adults is rarely examined. Drawing on two years of ethnography in two adult day centers in Taiwan, this paper examines the negotiation of power and solidarity through sajiao in dementia care. Sajiao is used for both task-oriented/transactional goals and interpersonal/relational goals and often serves multifunctional purposes to influence and to connect simultaneously. The intent and effect of sajiao as strategies of persuasion and influence (that is, power) and/or strategies of engagement and connection (that is, solidarity) is jointly constructed and negotiated. The multiple data sources of this longitudinal study—including ethnographic observations, interviews, and video-recordings—allow for richly contextualized interpretations of interactional episodes and reflective accounts, revealing a complex picture of power and solidarity negotiated through sajiao. This study contributes to research on eldercare communication by demonstrating the ambiguity and polysemy of discursive strategies in eldercare communication with regard to power and solidarity.

Abstract:
This paper provides an analysis of the practical implications of the concept of solidarity economy and the elements of public policies that affect the solidarity economy in Croatia. In a broader sense, solidarity is a common component of economic behaviour. In a narrower sense, solidarity refers to a set of economic practices that meet the criteria of balancing economic, social and environmental sustainability, joint ownership and participatory governance. Solidarity economy supports the construction and maintenance of common economic goods, which may occur within legal entities, as well as in contractual relations or informal cooperation. Solidarity economy is close to the concept of social economy, and significantly different from collaborative (sharing) economy. Public policies that encourage solidarity-based economic practices have their origins in the welfare state regime and the level of solidarity in society, which is followed by ideologies, strategies and activities of political and economic actors. The social contributions of the solidarity economy and the risks to which it is exposed justify state intervention in this area, which can be reflected in regulation and institutional, financial and tax support to its actors and processes. Public policies in Croatia generally do not recognise the importance of the social and solidarity economy and its actors, such as cooperatives and social enterprises. Although the recognition of possible contributions of the social and solidarity economy to society and the economy in Croatia is growing, the incentive framework is incomplete and insufficient, which is reflected in the results and future prospects of this sector. Key words: solidarity, solidarity economy, public policy, cooperatives, social enterprises.

Abstract:
The contradictions of the contemporary world reach alarming levels, which endangers the planetary sustainability, both environmental, social , or economic, which requires rethinking the current economic - production model. The Solidarity Economy (SE ) is presented as an alternative to the current system , focused on the socio-economic inclusion , self-management, equity and solidarity. The present study sought to identify and analyze the strategies used by three developments of solidarity economy that have achieved a certain degree of consolidation and success on projects from all congeners in action in the region of Londrina - PR. The article sought through exploratory , descriptive and qualitative research via document analysis and interviews with leading executives from each of the projects, understand the choice of strategies and their performance in the market. It is perceived that conventional strategic models do not apply to most solidary enterprises considering its particularities and purposes. The question and the point of tension that emerge from these experiments is how to replace or combine the traditional logic of profit maximization with maximization of social inclusion and alternative sociability, fundamental elements of the Solidarity Economy.

Abstract:
Aside from conveying intended messages, maintaining social harmony in oral communication is one of the communicative goals in oral interactions. This could be done by employing Social Interactions Strategies. With English being recognized as a second language (ESL) in Malaysia, the current study seeks to examine how Malay ESL speakers employed such strategies in their conversations and subsequently, maintained social harmony with their interlocutors. The oral data obtained were mapped according to Kumar and Rose’s (2010) categories of Social Interaction Strategies namely, Solidarity, Showing Tension Release and Agreeing which are adapted from Bales’ (1950) concept of three positive social-emotional interactions. The data were elicited from video-recorded oral interactions in students’ role play assessments at one public university in the east of peninsular Malaysia. The results showed the emergence of various types of Social Interaction Strategies that relate to Showing Solidarity, Showing Tension Release and Agreeing. These include showing solidarity by praising and agreeing to other’s ideas by showing attention through words of encouragement. Since the respondents consisted of Malay students, the findings led to a suggestion that the use of Social Interactions Strategies did not only promote harmony in their oral interactions but were also in line with the Malays’ non-confrontational behaviour as highlighted in past literature. Additionally, the findings also indicated the influence of one’s culture and behavioural traits on his or her language use.

Abstract:
Grassroots responses and alternatives to austerity that have emerged in Athens and Greece call for a re-thinking of the recent neoliberal crisis through articulations of contestation ‘from below’. This paper addresses this yet nascent theoretical debate through the notion of ‘urban solidarity spaces’, focusing on the spatiality of counter-austerity politics that emerges in and out of places and expands across urban space and beyond. From survival tactics grounded in Athenian neighbourhoods, such as local solidarity initiatives; to solidarity structures and cooperatives; and broader strategies of transformation and alternatives, such as the formation of a solidarity economy. These aim to constitute an empowering process of solidarity-making ‘from below’, and open up spaces for the practice of bottom-up democratic politics vis-à-vis austerity, a ‘politics of fear’ and crisis. The arguments raised here methodologically draw on activist ethnographic research in the ‘Athens of crisis’, between 2012 and 2013.

Abstract:
Terrorism crisis has become one of the serious challenges in the context of global security. The threat of terrorism not only endangers the safety of individuals and communities but also causes widespread psychological impacts, such as fear and anxiety that can disrupt social harmony. In addressing the terrorism crisis, communication is the key to minimizing fear and fostering community solidarity. This study aims to explore effective crisis communication strategies in responding to terrorism threats. The main focus of the research is to understand how communication messages can be designed to reduce fear and rally support and solidarity among the community in the face of a terrorism crisis. The research method used is a qualitative study with a content analysis approach of various information sources such as policy documents, mass media, and interviews with crisis communication experts. These data are analyzed to identify effective communication strategies in a terrorism crisis situation. The findings show that communication strategies focused on delivering accurate, transparent information and providing clear guidance to the public can help reduce fear and build solidarity. Additionally, the use of narratives that emphasize values of togetherness and cooperation has also proven effective in garnering community support. The conclusion of this study is that effective crisis communication in responding to terrorism threats prioritizes clarity, accuracy of information, and the use of narratives that build solidarity. Well-planned and collaboratively executed communication strategies between the government, media, and community are key to facing communication challenges in the context of a terrorism crisis.

Abstract:
This study investigated impoliteness theory from a sociopragmatic perspective in the American action movie “The Kill Team (2019)”. The study aimed at; investigating the most frequent use of impoliteness strategies in American action movies, finding out how characters’ use of impoliteness is affected by social power and solidarity and investigating the functions of impoliteness strategies used by the characters in these movies. To achieve these objectives the researcher implemented a qualitative content analysis in analyzing every impolite situation extracted from the data of the movie, which includes impolite utterances employed by the characters of the chosen movie. Additionally, Culpeper’s (1996, 2011) models were adopted in identifying the types of impoliteness strategies and their functions, whereas Brown and Gilman’s (1960) theoretical framework of power and solidarity was used to investigate the extent to which power and solidarity influence characters’ use of impoliteness strategies. However, there have been a lot of studies conducted on impoliteness but most of these studies focused on how impoliteness strategies are employed pragmatically, without taking into account the social context in which this phenomenon occurs. Thus, the current study is conducted in the discipline of linguistics in order to give an additional contribution to the phenomenon of impoliteness, and fill a gap that according to the researcher’s knowledge impoliteness strategies have not yet been explored from a sociopragmatic perspective in American action movies, in sense it takes into account the extent to which the use of impoliteness is affected by social power and solidarity. The findings of this study are clarified as follows. First, four of the impoliteness strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996) were used by the characters of the movie. They were bald on record impoliteness strategy, positive impoliteness strategy, negative impoliteness strategy and sarcasm or mock politeness strategy. Positive impoliteness was the most frequently used strategy among the other, followed by negative impoliteness, which took the second position and then bald on record impoliteness and sarcasm or mock politeness. Meanwhile, withhold politeness was not used by any character in the movie. Regarding the two social variables ‘power and solidarity’, the results of the analysis revealed that powerful characters tend to use impoliteness strategies over the less powerful characters, as (10) strategies which formed a percentage of (76.9%) of the strategies were used by powerful characters. And that (3) strategies, i.e. (23.1%) percent of the total strategies, were used by characters who were equal in power in relation to the addressees. Finally, concerning the characters who were less powerful to the addressees, the analysis did not mention any use of impoliteness by them at all. In terms of solidarity, the analysis showed that only (5) occurrences which formed (38.5%) of the impoliteness strategies were performed by solidary interlocutors and that (8) occurrences which comprised (61.5%) percent of the impoliteness strategies were used by non-solidary interlocutors. Regarding the function of impoliteness, all the functions were used by the characters. The 'affective function' was the most frequently used function among the others, which was used (6) times i.e. (46.1%) of the total functions. Followed by the 'coercive function' which was used (5) times i.e. (38.5%) percent. Finally, the 'entertainment function' took the last place with (2) occurrences only which comprised (15.4%) percent of the total data.

Abstract:
Digital media is one of the most popular media communication in recent years. A number of communities and organizations commonly use digital media as vessels to communicate, to inform and disseminate information. The proliferation of digital media has also been eclipsed by a number of political parties to deliver political messages to the public. The high profit derived from the use of digital media gave the political party a new innovation. The Indonesian solidarity party (psi), as a new political party in Indonesia, tries to use digital media as its political means of communication. The research will focus on psi's political communication strategy asa new political party to market its products and parties in digital media. The approach used was qualitative by case study methods with in-depth interviews and for the selection of informants used a intergalactic sampling technique. The principal informers of the study are the leaders, stewards, and caddis of the psi and are supported by supporting experts in political communication, public and political rival psi. The study will further expose digital political communication strategies done by the psi to marketing products, parties, approaches to voters, parliament, internal and media. The results of this study suggest that digital media is particularly influential in the strategies used. Keywords: Communication strategy, digital media, Indonesian Solidarity Party

Abstract:
AbstractIn family research, there have not yet been many attempts to grasp theoretically and empirically solidarity in couple relationships, a gap that this study addresses combining qualitative and quantitative strategies. One purpose of this article is to develop a theoretical framework to understand solidarity as an overarching structural element of cooperation in couples. We then propose, in the best possible way, a measurement of solidarity to be used in quantitative analysis. To this end, data from the German Family Panel (pairfam, waves 2008–2017) are used in a longitudinal design. We offer an empirical test of our measurement by employing autoregressive cross-lagged analyses with random intercepts (n = 2,588 couples) and establish the cause-and-effect relationship between solidarity and one important dimension of relationship quality, i. e. relationship satisfaction. The results of this analysis lend support to our assumption that couples cooperate on a basic rule of solidarity, having a unidirectional influence on relationship quality.

Abstract:
As a discourse community that is formed and maintained mostly online, involuntary celibates (who are typically heterosexual men) have been known to be one of the most obvious groups presenting misogynistic attitudes (Bates 2020). There are various forums where such online users meet to discuss subjects of relevance to them, including Reddit and subreddit threads (r/incels) and websites specifically targeted at the community (such as Incels.is). Although the subject of incel discourses has been addressed from several linguistic perspectives, including the representation of social actors (Heritage & Koller 2020), toxic language in the community (Pelzer et al. 2021), metaphor (Heritage et al. 2023) and the extreme language of misogyny (Bogetić 2022), still relatively little has been written specifically about how the community of practice is formed on the basis of the discursive expression of solidarity. The present paper is an analysis of discussions on the forum Incels.is on the subject of sex and relationships, specifically investigating how both manifestations of misogynist attitudes and discursive strategies of politeness are used to form solidarity between users. The analysis considers that through the employment of positive and negative politeness strategies in an online community, group bonds are made stronger and in-group solidarity is expressed both directly and indirectly. The analysis of politeness strategies showed that positive politeness and negative politeness were both present as face-saving acts and to construct solidarity through the use of sarcasm, kinship claiming, informal language and the negative evaluation of female actors.

Speakers and hearers should give the intention to face each other since the face is a self-image of a person. Politeness strategies can be used in situations where politeness strategies are ways to save the hearers’ faces from face-threatening acts (FTAs). This study is purposed to discover the kinds of politeness strategies used by judges and their functions using Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987), reveal participants’ non-verbal communication reactions through their facial expressions using Navarro’s theory (2018), and analyze factors influencing the use of politeness strategies used by judges Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987) in MasterChef Junior America season 6. The qualitative method is used as a research method. Four episodes are used as objects in this study. As a result, the study finds that four politeness strategies are utilized by the judges to give criticisms, reminders, commands, and open conversations with the participants. The most used politeness strategy is positive politeness (144 data), continued by negative politeness (40 data), off record (13 data), and bald on record (12 data). The use of politeness strategies is influenced by some factors, namely payoffs, social distance, relative power, and ranking of impositions. In addition, politeness strategies affect the hearers’ facial expressions. Positive and negative politeness give positive emotions while bald on-record and off-record strategies give negative emotions in the hearers’ facial expressions.

Abstract:
This article examines the work of D’Lo, a Sri Lankan-transgender-hip hop performance artist, and the Post Natyam Collective, a transnational coalition that develops critical and creative approaches to South Asian dance. The works utilize two strategies for performing queerness in relation to South Asian cultural practices: (1) autobiographic performance art rooted in identity politics and (2) the South Asian technique of abhinaya. These strategies use different modes of identification and audience–performer relationships. Autobiographical solo performance creates solidarity through shared identity or alliances between performer and audience. Abhinaya evokes pleasure and sensuality in multiple, ambiguous ways towards the goal of evoking rasa, ideally the audience’s experience of emotional–spiritual transcendence. We investigate tactical crossovers between the strategies of autobiography and abhinaya in D’Lo’s and Post Natyam’s work: how do they interact, where might they exclude each other, and what kind of performance of queerness emerges through their interplay?

Abstract:
Generally, the role of politeness in society can never be legitimately repudiated. In this direction, politeness and its role in translation studies would be considered as a universal phenomenon across languages and cultures. However, every language has its special system of expressing and translating politeness expression in order to satiate the needs of the target audience completely. Therefore, translator as 'Sprachmittler' may confront with particular and culture-bound politeness facets which can a paramount source of difficulty for them. Hence, deciphering the points of similarities and differences across languages and cultures is of significance importance for the translator who is responsible for amalgamating and reconciling source language regulations to the target language ones. The present study strives for tracing one stable and durable politeness framework for the translator of which their aims are to transfer the main essence of the source language into the target one. This framework was proposed by Akbari (2014) consisting two particular strategies namely solidarity and deference strategies along with eight procedures showing the right path to translator in order to produce an indelible rendering. Also this study utilizes Pearson chisquare (χ2) to see the correlation between solidarity and deference strategies found in the source and target languages.

Abstract:
This study aimed at exploring legitimation strategies used by two members of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (or Partai Solidaritas Indonesia, abbreviated as PSI) in justifying their party leader’s controversial statement on the abandonment of Sharia Law. To do so, it employed critical discourse analysis (CDA) with Leeuwen’s legitimation strategies (2007, 2008) as its analytical tool. The data were obtained from two separate interviews with PSI members aired on two different Indonesian TV channels. The interviews were transcribed and translated. From this process, a 1.170-word corpus, from which the data were derived, was generated. The findings showed that moral evaluation is the most dominant legitimation strategy, followed by rationalization and authorization. In moral evaluation, abstraction occurs most often, followed by evaluation and analogy. In rationalization, theoretical rationalization is used more often than instrumental rationalization. Finally, in authorization, PSI utilized impersonal authority to reject the Sharia Law by referring to academic studies and legal documents which assess the law as being negative. Meanwhile, expert authority was used to build legitimation by reference to experts who support the negative effects of the law. This study implies the power of language to legitimize a controversial activity by using different linguistics strategies.

Sex and sex-related topics are rather sensitive in the Chinese culture, thus conversations about those topics prove to be a delicate issue. The present study uses Conversation Analysis as the research methodology to analyze the use of communicative strategies in doctor–patient communication about venereal disease. The data excerpt analyzed is from a radio phone-in program that offers medical advice for males’ sex-related diseases, solves problems that the listeners have about certain sexual behavior, and provides general sexual knowledge. In the telephone call selected for the present research, the caller is the mother of the young man who is infected with venereal disease and needs help from the medical expert who is on the program. The mother employs indirect compliment, direct compliment, insider claim, and sympathy seeking as communicative strategies to build solidarity with the doctor. The various communicative strategies used lead to a smooth sequential development of the communication, and illustrate how solidarity-building serves an important function in this specific healthcare context.

ABSTRACT: As many young Jews grow increasingly alienated from Zionist narratives, some have found a space for expressions of diasporism and solidarity with Palestinians in the international Yiddishist music scene. This article examines four twenty-first century Yiddish songs that refer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and express solidarity with Palestinians: "Ver Tantzt" by Black Ox Orkestar, "Dumai" by Daniel Kahn, "A shtik fun harts" by Josh Waletzky and Michael Winograd, and "Qibya" by Koyt far dayn fardakht. These songs were compiled by the authors as part of the group "Yiddishist with Palestine," an online gathering of Yiddishist activists that started during the 2021 Gaza war, discussing strategies for expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Yiddishist communal spaces. Through textual, contextual, and musical analysis, and drawing on theories of diaspora and diasporism, the article explores the various ways these songs express Jewish solidarity with Palestinians.

Abstract This article provides an overview of the historical development of Palestine solidarity globally since the 1960s and compares the historical evidence to today’s protest movement since the 7 October 2023 Gaza War. Through a reading of a recent collection of testimonies by activists worldwide, the article reflects on the historical coherence of the movement from the formation of the Palestinian liberation movements in the 1960s, the emergence of global solidarity groups in the 1970s and the fragmentation of the Palestinian political landscape since then. The article asks what this decades-long development of solidarity registers and strategies has meant for the Gaza protests since 2023. What is the significance of the structure and scope of early Palestine solidarity for the mobilization we are witnessing today? Which echoes can we observe from the earlier periods of protests, and how are memories and histories of the development of the movement reactivated today?

In Ireland, private health insurance (PHI) has long been lauded in state discourses as a fair system and, more recently, the PHI regime has been represented as embodying a unique cultural heritage founded on social commitments to community and intergenerational solidarity. Based on an analysis of Irish parliamentary (Dáil Éireann) debates between 1956 and 2007, this paper shows how the myth that PHI in Ireland serves as a ‘technology of solidarity’ is constructed and sustained by specific rhetorical strategies deployed around the meaning of ‘community’. We argue that this myth has far-reaching consequences for how ‘solidarity’ is imagined, particularly given the pervasive pull of neo-liberal rationalities over the governance of healthcare.

Building on common identity theory and intergroup contact theory, this study sought to further understanding of people–place relationships by developing a holistic theoretical model to scrutinize place attachment as an antecedent of social distance, mediated by emotional solidarity and moderated by frequency of contact between tourists and residents. Visitor data analyzed with SEM revealed that place dependence is a significant predictor of social distance given it affects affinity positively and avoidance negatively, both of which are mediated by the three dimensions of emotional solidarity. Furthermore, the mediated relationships (via emotional solidarity) between place attachment and social distance vary by level of visitors’ frequency of interaction with residents. This study expands current theorization by examining the merits of emotional solidarity as an affective link in a tourist cognitive-behavioral model. From a practical standpoint, DMOs need to understand these construct linkages and include residents in their marketing strategies to increase repeat visitation.

A substantial number of studies have been completed with respect to the use of English and social solidarity in broader contexts of cross-cultural communications including tourist–host interactions in tourism settings, but little, if any, is understood about the use of English and solidarity in hectic and tightly scheduled international airport settings. This study fills the gap by explicating how English is used by Tourist Information Center (TIC) staffs and incoming tourists at Lombok International Airport (LIA), Lombok, Indonesia, to contextually symbolize solidarity among them. Data were collected in more than a year of intensive participant and non-participant ethnographic observations of real-time interactions at the TIC in the LIA. Recordings, introspective, retrospective, and prospective interviews with the staff and the tourist respondents, as well as note takings of the contexts and the situations of communicative events, were the main means of data collection, and these data were analyzed using integration of sociological analyses of solidarity and ethnographic analyses of communicative interactions. The study elucidates ideological views on the service and explicates how speech accommodation, style convergence, code switching, and kinship terms have been employed as strategies for creating symbolic solidarity.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, as restless capital has moved about the world looking for cheaper production sites, labor campaigns have looked across borders for support. In a world where threats of capital mobility and outsourcing strategies are used to push wages and working conditions ever lower, local activists have called on international allies to insist that multinationals improve the treatment of workers—especially in the developing world, where local governments often seem unwilling or unable to protect their citizens at work and where workers on their own have little leverage.

Abstract:
The AEG-strike: nearly a success. The workers of the AEG-factory in Nuremberg striked during 43 days against the delocalisation of the production to Eastern Europe. The strike was supported by an amazing regional, national and international solidarity. In the end, the union agreed to a compromise, obtaining relativly high payments of damages, but consenting in the closure of the plant. The article retraces the development of the conflict, analyses the ‘resources of solidarity’ and tries to evaluate its outcome and the underlying union strategies.

Abstract:
In a field setting, participants (N = 227) were primed with 1 of 3 concepts: love (positive valence), distress (negative valence), or solidarity (positive valence). Participants were then asked to give money to help hospitalized children. Results indicated that the inducing of love triggered more helpfulness than the inducing of solidarity or of distress. This finding is explained in light of the emotion schemas theory (Izard, 2007), the gender role theory of helping (Eagly & Crowley, 2006), and affective influences on information-processing strategies (Berkowitz, 2000).

Abstract:
<em>Although advice is considered in many languages as a face-threatening speech act; in Spanish it is often seen as a solidarity-building tool that shows closeness among the interlocutors. This study analyzes the advice sequences in a conversation between a Puerto Rican couple in order to identify the strategies, types of sentences, and reactions that took place during the verbal exchange. Results show evidence that -contrary to building solidarity among Spanish speakers- advice can also serve as a tool for questioning, criticizing, and demeaning the interlocutor.</em>

Abstract:
The very phrase «Euro-Atlantic solidarity» primarily presupposes an appeal to the foreign policy activities of the states of North America (USA and Canada) and the European Union. A priori, it is aimed at coordinating national and global strategies designed to determine the relations of the countries of this community with the outside world. Most analysts agree that it was this solidarity that was the first and perhaps the biggest and most sensitive victim of the Donald Trump administration's policies. The author of the article believes that after the 45th president leaves the White House, transatlantic solidarity will receive a tangible impetus for its renewal. While maintaining its basic foundations in the form of liberal-democratic values, however, relations between the two shores of the Atlantic are likely to be restructured in a somewhat different paradigm than before. During the Trump presidency, both the United States and Western Europe have practically formed two visions of the correctness of the foundations of transatlantic solidarity. In some aspects, they coincide, while in others they may diverge.
